Dewitt Johnson
Graveside services for Dewitt Johnson, 76, of Washington will be held Thursday, October 19, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Phillips Mill Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. John M. King and Rev. Robert Jacobs officiating. He died Tuesday, October 17, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Decatur.
Mr. Johnson was a native of Taliaferro County and was the son of the late Burl Johnson and the late Genie Sherrer Johnson. His wife was the late Mary Mathews Johnson. He had retired as foreman at the Greensboro Lumber Co. and was a U.S. Marines veteran of World War II where he received the Purple Heart. He was a former Legion commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Athens and was a member of the Phillips Mill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dewitt Johnson Jr., Athens, and Gerald Johnson, Crawfordville; a daughter, Martha J. Robertson, Athens; a brother, Dewey Johnson, Commerce; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lizzie Maude Echols
Graveside services for Miss Lizzie Maude Echols, 99, of Windemere Health Care Center, Augusta, were held Friday, October 6, 2000, at the Mallorysville Baptist Church, Tignall, with Rev. Donnie Berry officiating. She died Wednesday, October 4, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta.
Miss Echols was a native of Wilkes County and was the oldest member of Mallorysville Baptist Church. She had been a silk mill spinner.
Survivors include a nephew, Robert Hopkins, North Augusta, S.C.; and two nieces, Jean Wright, Starr, S.C., and Elsie Adams, Elberton.

Henry Kinzey Branham
Graveside services for Henry Kinzey Branham, 69, of Branham Road, Washington, were held Thursday, October 5, 2000, at the Branham Family Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Chip Wilson officiating. He died Tuesday, October 3, at his home.
Mr. Branham was a native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County. He was the son of the late Charlie Edward Branham and the late Lola Kinzey Branham. He had served the City of Washington as Waste Treatment Plant Superintendent for 36 years and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Washington, where he was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Young-At-Heart Club, and was a volunteer for the church food pantry. He was a master Mason of the Washington LaFayette Lodge #23 and was a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Stevens Branham of Washington; two sons, Henry Kinzey Branham Jr., New Orleans, La., and Walter Stevens Branham, Crawford; a daughter, LuAnn B. Holmes, Trenton, SC; two grandchildren, Kate Elizabeth Holmes, Rock Hill, SC., and Cissy Branham Holmes, Trenton, S.C.; three sisters, Sara Dorn, Clarks Hill, S.C., Mazie Thornhill, Atlanta, and Evelyn Nale, Grayson.
Pallbearers were nephews, including Charlie Mills, Eddie, Jimmy and Michael Thornhill, Edward and Ray Branham, and Marty and Louis Echols.

Annie R. Grant
Funeral services for Annie R. Grant, 77, of Atlanta, were held Monday, October 9, 2000, at Reeves Chapel Baptist Church, Tignall, with Rev. Michael Gresham officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She died October 2.
She was a native of Wilkes County and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meriweather. She was a member of Reeves Chapel Baptist Church and had worked in the dry cleaning and home health care business.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Eva Brown, Cleveland, Ohio, and Doris Meriweather, Hemstead, N.Y.

Charlie S. Pope
Funeral services for Charlie S. Pope, 85, were held Saturday, September 30, at 1 p.m., at the New Springhill Baptist Church, Philomath, with Rev. Lamar Davenport officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, September 21, 2000, in the McDuffie County Hospital, Thomson.
Mr. Pope was the son of the late Tom Wesley Pope and the late Sarah Johnson Pope of Oglethorpe County. He lived in Chicago, Illinois, for many years and retired in 1980 from the Chicago Transit Authority. Upon returning to Georgia some years ago, he became a member of the New Springhill Baptist Church, and through the years had served in many capacities in his church.
Survivors include his wife, Mausie Pope; a son, Charles W. Pope, Decatur; a daughter, Faristine Moore, University Park, Illinois; and six grandchildren, Samuel T. and William K. Moore, Charles D., Dolly F., Benjamin, and Mary Pope.
Pallbearers included Samuel T. Moore Jr., Charles D. Pope, Charles Turner, William K. Moore, Benjamin C. Pope, and Rico Bolton.

John Thomas Wylie
Funeral services for John Thomas Wylie, 63, of Washington were held Saturday, September 30, 2000, 3:30 p.m., at the White Rock Baptist Church, Rayle, with Rev. G.L. Avery officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Tuesday, September 26, in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Mr. Wylie was the son of the late Will Tom Wylie and the late Carrie Taylor Wylie. He was a member of the White Rock Baptist Church and was employed by Clark-Schwebel Fiber Glass Co. until his health declined.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Wylie of Washington; two daughters, Susie Johnson, Athens, and Kimberly Dillard, Washington; two sons, Gregory Harris and John H. Wylie Jr. of Washington; a sister, Dorothy Wylie Taylor, Marion, Ohio; and three brothers, Will Tom Wylie Jr., Washington, Jessie Wylie and Joseph Wylie, Marion, Ohio.

James Walker (Jimmy) Thornton
Graveside services for James Walker (Jimmy) Thornton, 63, of Danburg Road, Tignall, were held Sunday, October 1, 2000, at Fishing Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Roy Cates officiating.
Mr. Thornton was the son of the late Tommie Phillip Thornton and the late Nina Virginia Walker Thornton. He was a native of Wilkes County and a member of the Fishing Creek Baptist Church. He had lived in the Sandtown community of Wilkes County all his life and was disabled and a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Bohler Thornton of Tignall; a son, Jeff Thornton, Tignall; a daughter, Beth Armour, Rayle; a brother, Robert Thornton, Jackson, S.C.; four sisters, Emma Jean Jones and Marilyn Newsome, Washington; Jo Ann Hart, Beech Island, S.C., and Becky Thomasson, Tignall; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Morgan Smith, Jon Smith, Doug Evans, Gary Ware, Wade Bryant, Zan Bunch, Greg Andrews, and Johnny Rice.

Marjorie Mewborn Cotton
A memorial service for Marjorie Mewborn Cotton will be held at the Washington Presbyterian Church Saturday, October 7, 2000, at 2 p.m,. with Rev. Charles Cook and Austin Meadows officiating. Mrs. Cotton died October 1 in Pensacola, Fla., where she had lived for the past five years. According to her wishes she will be inurned at a private ceremony in Resthaven Cemetery.
A memorial service was also held in Gulf Breeze, Fla., on Wednesday, October 4.
Mrs. Cotton was a native of Washington and the daughter of the late Odell Herndon Mewborn and the late Helen Bunch Mewborn. She was a member of the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church and a former member and choir director of the Washington Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Brenau University and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and numerous professional Teachers’ organizations. She also attended the University of Georgia, and had taught music and reading in elementary and middle schools for 35 years. Following her retirement she worked with the Census Bureau for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Claire Cotton, Athens, and Cody Cotton Hicks, Gulf Breeze, Fla.; a grandson, Timothy Michael Ridgway Jr., Gulf Breeze, Fla; a sister Evelyn Mewborn Wickersham, Tulsa, Okla.; and two nieces, Julie Wickersham Fleming, Tulsa, Okla., and Nancy Wickersham Pritchett, San Diego, Calif.

Nellie Barnett
Funeral services for Nellie Barnett of Rockville Centre, N.Y., will be held Sunday, October 8, 2000, at the St. James CME Church, Washington, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Joseph S. Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Cola CME Zion Church Cemetery, Washington.
She was born in Wilkes County and was the daughter of Will and Dollie Barnett. She was a private nurse and a member of the St. Paul AME Church, Ocean Side, N.Y.
Survivors include a sister, Susie Roberts, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, John (Jack) Barnett, Washington.

Benjamin R. Freeman III
A memorial service for Benjamin R. Freeman III, 83, of 321 Stovall Road, Greenville, Ga., will be held Thursday, October 5, 2000, at 3 p.m, at the Greenville Baptist Church with Rev. Jonathan Porter officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. He died Tuesday, October 3, at the Medical Center in Columbus.
Mr. Freeman was born in Greenville and was the son of the late Benjamin R. Freeman Jr. and the late Jessie Thrash Freeman. He was the husband of Lelia Cheney Freeman, a native of Wilkes County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 3rd and 7th Armored Divisions and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star along with other awards and ribbons. He had practiced law for more than 50 years before retiring and was a member of the Meriwether Bar Association and the Coweta Bar Association. He was a member of the Greenville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include is wife, Lelia Cheney Freeman of Greenville; three daughters, Nan Freeman of LaGrange, Beth F. Williams, Evans, and Patricia F. Bauman, High Point, N.C.; a son, Benjamin R. Freeman IV, Greenville, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Nan Williams, Patricia Williams, Allison Williams, Beth Tidwell, Mark Bauman, Michael Bauman, Stephan Hightower, and Suzanne H. Woods; and a great-grandson, Benjamin Charles Woods.

Steed Lyle Simons
Funeral services for Steed Lyle Simons, 84, of Crawfordville, were held Sunday, September 24, 2000, at the Sandy Cross Baptist Church in Taliaferro County with Jeffrey Perdue officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died September 21 in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.
Mr. Simons was a native of Taliaferro County and was the son of the late Jule C. Simons and the late Edna Gertrude Lyle Simons. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had retired as a policeman in Crawfordville. He was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rena Grimsley Simons, Cedartown; A son, Ronald Simons, Winston; three daughters, Faye McBee and Martha Perdue, Marietta, and Judy Kinser, Muscle Shoals, Ala.; three brothers, Jack Simons, Elberton, Thomas Simons, Crawfordville, and Ralph Simons, Greensboro; three sisters, Mary Dean Moore, Washington, Lucy Nell Daley, Hampton, Va., and Barbara Ann Combs, Union Point; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Grandson served as pallbearers.

Doris Couch Ward Echols
Graveside services for Mrs. Doris Couch Ward Echols, 95, of Barco, N.C., were held at Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, Tignall, at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 21, 2000, with Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. She died September 15 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, N.C.
Mrs. Echols was born in Winder, Ga., and was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the daughter of the late Ola Lee Couch Couch and James Glenn Couch and was the widow of Edward Mitchell Echols.
Survivors include a son, Robert Ward, Camden, N.C.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
