DR. EDWARD H. LONG
When Little Harold picked up the trumpet at age 7, and played a tune without the first lesson, Bessie and Claude Long knew they had a "special" child. Coming from a family that was musically gifted, it was no surprise that Harold turned to music. After music lessons, and many music competitions later (many of which he won), Harold set out for the United States Navy School of Music.
After graduation he was assigned to the Admiral's Band in the Panama Canal Zone, where he served for three and a half years in World War II. Music was always a love of his life. With his talent to help finance his way through school, "Doc" graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1950. With an additional degree from the Texas School of Chiropractic, "Doc" set out on a wonderful career, healing and helping people for the next 50 years.
As one of the "pioneers" of Chiropractic at Life University, "Doc" loved teaching aspiring young chiropractors at the school and in the student clinic. He loved to share his immense knowledge of chiropractic with his students and instill in them the love he held for the profession. As a long time clinician in private practice and distinguished professor of Chiropractic at Life University, "Doc" loved teaching aspiring young chiropractors at the school and in the student clinic. Often sought out by students on difficult cases, "Doc" never failed to assist, often guiding his students gently to the correct diagnosis and treatment without stepping into the spotlight. It was due to his actions and the love of his profession that he was honored several times as a "Distinguished Doctor of Chiropractic" by his peers and the University.
His greatest love of all was his family. A loving husband to his wife Nancy and an excellent role model to his sons, Stan, Richard, and Greg, "Doc" was the epitome of what a husband and father should be. Never harsh nor judgemental, "Doc" was always the example of unconditional love. This love also extended to his daughters-in-law, Karla and Carol. His grandchildren were a source of great joy for him. The way he doted on them and always cared for them was the greatest example of his love and warmth. A long-time Doraville resident, Dr. Long died on April 11, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Colquitt in Miller County on February 17, 1925.
A celebration of life for Dr. Edwin H. Long was held on Sunday, April 13, at 6:00 PM at the Marriott Gwinnett Place in Duluth.
