The journey began in Miller County on December 15, 1919. Edith Merritt McDuffie was the eldest of eight children born to Nettie and Ezra Merritt. Three brothers preceded her in death.
She became a new creature in Christ at an early age. he was always a faithful and devoted Sunday School teacher at St. Mary A.M.E. Church of Whigham. Ga. and at Bethel Baptist Church in Colquitt. Recently she joined Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ Jesus.
She was married to the late Ira Paramore in 1938. Two daughters were born to that union, The family was completed when they adopted a son at the age of two months. She married George McDuffie in 1976.
She was educated in Miller and Decatur counties. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Albany State College. Several generations of students in Grady and Miller County schools benefited from her commitment to education. She retired after 41 years of teaching. She was a featured columnist for the Miller County Liberal. The newspaper will not be the same without her “Ebony Dots and Dashes” with her “Sights to Behold.”
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Miracle Temple Church.
Memories will be forever cherished by her husband, George; two daughters, Joyce Wright of Sanford, FL, and Alyce (Isaac, Sr.) of Cairo; one son, Richard Paramore of Colquitt; three brothers, Rev. Milton Merritt (Alice) of Albany, John (Edith) Merritt and Ezra Merritt of Savannah; one sister, Myrtle (Joe) Baulkmon of Savannah; one granddaughter, four grandsons, three stepgrandchildren;, one uncle, Rubin (Martha) Johnson of Orlando, FL; one aunt, Annie Pearl Johnson of Colquitt; special friends, Katie Smith and Eloise Holt; her loving pet and companion, Midnight; and innumerable nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her journey ended at 6:10 P.M. on August 31, 2006, when God in his infinite wisdom sent the angel of death to bring her to Him. She is not dead. She is resting in the bosom of Jesus.

JOHNNY WAYNE HURLEY
Johnny Wayne Hurley, 63, of Colquitt, died at his residence on August 31, 2006.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 3, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville with Rev. Eric Boomer and Elder Ross Plowden officiating. Burial followed in the Rock Pond/Olive Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Hurley, Tony Black, Todd Dunn, Jeremy Holley, Benny Kimmins and Jackie Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Matthew Vorse, Joe Barber, Pee Wee Hughes, Brad Bell, Tim Gibson and Ricky Gibson.
Mr. Hurley was born on September 9, 1942, to the late John Hurley and Grace Askew Hurley. He was a self-employed auto mechanic and attended the Rock Pond/Olive Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marti Gail Holley Hurley of Colquitt; his mother, Grace Hurley of Iron City; one son, Buddy and Mary Hurley of Colquitt; one daughter, Tessie and Lamar Temples of Iron City; one brother, Buster Hurley of Iron City; one sister, Gloria Black Joyce of Macon; two grandchildren, Lee and Ryan Temples; surrogate grandchildren, Joe Barber, Julia Kimmins and Jay Kimmins; and several nieces and nephews.

MARGUERITE NEWBERRY
Mrs. Marguerite Newberry, age 83, of Colquitt died Thursday, August 31, 2006, at Miller Nursing Home.
Mrs. Newberry was born January 2, 1923, in Miller County. She was a member of Salem Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired paraprofessional with the Miller County School System.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kent Barwick and the Rev. Talmadge Worsley officiating. Interment followed in Primitive Union Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Smith, Alan Lee, Ronnie Newberry, John Weaver, John Maloy and Tim Phillips.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Heard and husband, Frank, Colquitt; two brothers, Robert “Bob” Daniels, Colquitt, and Stanley Daniels, Muscadine, AL; four grandchildren, Melanie Smith, Marcia Lee, Lance Heard and Dane Heard; nine great-grandchildren, Brandon Smith, Ansley Smith, Whitney Lee, Miles Lee, Tyler Heard, Garrett Heard, Reece Heard, Morgan Heard and Caroline Heard; one great-great-grandchild, Lexie Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Newberry, and one sister, Annette Newberry.

Mr. James Alvin Newton, 77, of Colquitt, GA passed away May 3, 2006 at his residence. The visitation will be Thursday, May 4, 2006, from 6 til 8:00 P.M. at Colquitt Funeral Home. The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 5, 2006, at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Calvin Arnold & Rev. W. H. Phillips officiating. Interment will follow at Primitive Union Cemetery. Mr. Newton was born October 22, 1928 in Baker Co. He was a retired farmer, the owner for 27 years of the Newton-Hamrick Co., one of the founding directors of Peoples South Bank in Colquitt, and was owner of Green Circle Farms for 25 years. Mr. Newton was a Air Force Veteran and a member of Union Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Joy Newton of Colquitt; three daughters, Cathy Dillon (Ray) of Auburn, Al., Debra Whatley (Larry) of Colquitt, and Sherry Slocumb (Robert) of Macon; two sons, Al Newton Jr. of Albany and Ricky Houston (Donna) of Colquitt; one sister, Myra Fountain of Fitzgerald; one brother, Ferrell Newton of Arlington; and nine grandchildren, Michelle Puckett, Haley Dillon, Heather Gibson, Michael Houston, Shane Whatley, Ashley Slocumb, Shannon Slocumb, Natalie Slocumb, and Rob Slocumb.
ALBERT RICHARDSON
Mr. Albert Richardson, age 52, died Friday, July 21, 2006, in Colquitt.
Mr. Richardson was born July 6, 1944, to the late Albert Richardson Jr. and the late Thelma McCormick Richardson of Colquitt.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Spirit Filled International Church with Bishop James Wooten officiating. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ladon McCray, Ricky Green, Demetrius Galvin, Mark Freeman, Jr. and Kenneth Wiley.
Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Richardson, Steven Richardson, and Rodney Richardson.
Survivors include one half brother, Charles Walker, Moultrie; three sons, Anthony Richardson, Colquitt, Rodney Richardson, Pensacola, FL, and Steven Richardson, Colquitt; two step-sons, Jerry Galvin, Colquitt, and Alon Williams, London, England; three daughters, Lisa Richardson, Camilla, Lisa Burke, Bainbridge, Mary Christie Adams, Colquitt; three step-daughters, Beverly Galvin, Jessie Burr, Colquitt, and Barbara Grant, Atlanta; a host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, cousins and friends, and a very caring neighbor, Mrs. Gayle Grimsley.

Emory Melvin Middleton
Emory Melvin Middleton, 72, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Valparaiso, FL, on Tuesday, July 25, 2006.
He was born on June 29, 1934, in Miller County to Elijah and Pearl Crawford Middleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dorsey and Grady Middleton.
Emory had resided in Valparaiso since 1968. He faithfully served his country for 28 years in the U.S. Air Force. Emory and his beloved wife of 51 years, Barbara, created a still growing legacy of family and the values of family.
He loved to work in his garden and to share his vegetables with friends and neighbors. He loved his family and country and set a wonderful example to each family member. He was loved and respected by his family and friends. He will truly be missed by each one. He was such a loving and kind person.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Barbara; son, Chuck and wife Sarah; daughter, Sheila Hoskins and husband Gary; granddaughters, Melodie Olps and husband Rusty, Jennifer Richards and husband Brett, and Aimee Middleton; grandsons, Chris Hart and wife Kara, and Shawn Hart; great-grandson, Ridley Olps; sisters, Sarah Hilburn, Frances Kelly, Theo Reagan and husband Wallace; and brother, Ray Middleton and wife Ann.

Bobby Spooner Fulford
Mrs. Bobby Spooner Fulford, 84, of Colquitt passed away Sunday morning, July 23, 2006, at the Miller County Hospital.
Mrs. Fulford was born on May 14, 1922, in Seminole County to the late James Caleb and Ila Harrell Spooner. She was married to the late Rev. Buford Fulford. Mrs. Fulford was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 26, at Friendship United Methodist Church in Donalsonville with the Rev. Kirk Loyless officiating. Interment followed in Friendship Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, David Fulford and Robert Fulford; three brothers, John F. Spooner, Thames Spooner, and Walton Spooner; and two sisters, Myrtle Fulford and Loyce White.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Richard Fulford and his wife Kathy of Moultrie and Dan Fulford and his wife Glenda of Colquitt; two sisters, Betty Jo Newberry of Richmond Hill and Lucille Dutton of Donalsonville; seven grandchildren, Mike Fulford, Tina Lebell, Ricky Fulford, Michelle Gay, Celesta Pollock, Jarod Fulford, and Brandon Fulford; nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Sam Gay, Bob Dutton, Wade Spooner, Ricky Fulford, Brandon Fulford, and Jarod Fulford.

ERNEST DALE MADDOX
Mr. Ernest (Ernie) Dale Maddox, 73, of Colquitt died Wednesday July 26, 2006, at Palmyra Medical Center in Albany.
Mr. Maddox was born March 3, 1933, in Claiborne, TN. He was a mill wright and a member of New Salem Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Ford Motor Co in 1995, and the UAW Union in Michigan.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 29, at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Talmadge Worsley and the Rev. Cory Thomas officiating.
John Anderson, Jamie Gray, Marion Keck, Michael Holmoka, Tim Davis, Michael Davis, Jeff Hollis, and Chad Hollis served as pallbearers. Interment followed at New Salem Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel Maddox of Colquitt; three sons, Gary (Debbie) Maddox of Dundee, MI, Roy (Jan) Maddox of Gainesville, and Mark (Kim) Maddox of Dundee, MI; one daughter, Lois (Robert) Fultz of Lafollette, TN; four stepsons, Tim (Melinda) Davis of Tecumseh, MI, Michael (Mary) Davis of Britton, MI, Jeff Hollis of Philadelphia, PA and Chad Hollis of Lansing, MI; one sister, Gwen Rutherford of New Tazewell, TN; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Fonnie Maddox; two brothers, Glyn Maddox and J. F. Maddox; two sisters, Edna Smith and Trula Collins; and one granddaughter, Pepsi Maddox.

WAYNE PERKINS
Mr. Wayne Perkins, age 55, of Colquitt died Thursday, June 1, 2006.
Mr. Perkins was born August 13, 1950, to the late Dovert Perkins and Arrie Perkins of Colquitt. He worked with the City of Atlanta as a fireman until he retired and moved back to Colquitt.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Archie Crews officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were brothers and friends of Mr. Perkins.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Perkins, Colquitt; one daughter, Michelle Perkins; one son, Wayne Perkins Jr., all of Colquitt; mother, Mrs. Arrie Perkins, Colquitt; four sisters, Betty (Michael) Williams, Agnes (Luke) Gilbert, both of Atlanta, Janice (Raymond) Shepard, Barbara Jean Morgan, both of Colquitt; four brothers, Willie D. JACK NELSON TUCKER
Mr. Jack Nelson Tucker Sr., age 64 of Newton died Sunday, June 4, 2006 in Baker County.
Mr. Tucker was born September 27, 1941 in Baker County. He was a meat cutter and attended Live Oak Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Live Oak Free Will Baptist CHurch with the Rev. Melvin Moody and the Rev. Paul Irvin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tim Bush, Vance Sheffield, Phillip Abbott, Ray Abbott Jr., T.E. Moye and Rusty Lanier.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Tamara and Jason Wall, Callahan, FL; one sister, Linda Papp, Albany; three brothers, Lynwood Tucker, Newton, Ray Tucker, ALbany, Frank Tucker, Newton; and two grandchildren, Brook Wall and Trent Wall, Callahan, FL.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Nelson Tucker, Jr.

RUEL JEFFERSON EVERSON
Mr. Ruel Jefferson Everson, age 80 of Edison died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Everson was born August 31, 1925 in Early County. He was retired owner of Everson Home and Auto in Edison. He was a member of Edison Baptist Church and was the Chaplain and member of the Edison Lions Club, member of the American Legion Post #183, Edison, a Gideon and a deacon of the Edison Baptist Church. He also was in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Edison Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Williams, Rev. Gary Meadows and Dickey DeMott officiating. Interment followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Arlington.
Pallbearers were Frank Miller, Bobby Brooks, Chad Brooks, Tom Jackson, Barry Bell and Ted McLendon.
Survivors include one brother, Bo Everson, Colquitt; three sisters, Doris Nesbitt and husband, Burt, Leesburg, Eleanor WOod and husband, Billy, Lake City, FL, Ann Taylor and husband, Frank, Leesburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

AUDRA MAE FAIRCLOTH COOK
Mrs. Audra Mae Faircloth Cook, age 77 of Bainbridge died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at her residence.
Mrs. Cook was born August 21, 1928 in Seminole County to the late Ennis Grady Faircloth and Birdie Williams Faircloth. She graduated from West Bainbridge High School in 1946 and married John Wilkinson Cook on July 4, 1947. She was an LPBN at Memorial Manor Nursing Home and a member of Morningside Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Morningside Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Van Landingham officiating. Interment followed at Whites Bridge Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, John Wilkinson Cook, Bainbridge; son, Lyn Kelvin Cook, Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Sandra Rives, Macon; five sisters, Mamie Black, Hazel Brunson, Avon Park, FL, Bernice Ingram, Ollie Mae Faircloth, Melanie Hutchins, Bainbridge; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
