Mr. Herbert Earl Burke, 64, of Millen dies on Aug. 3
Mr. Herbert Earl Burke, 64, of Millen died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005.
His funeral was held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Burke was a native of Jenkins County. He was a retired purchasing agent for Metal Industries. He was a member of Magnolia Country Club and a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Schwonke Burke of Millen; two sons, Capt. Slade Burke of Valdosta and Chad Burke of Savannah; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Johnson of Swainsboro; and two grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were Chris Johnson, Bobby Dickey, Freddie Gillis, Julian Wade, Ray Garvin and Lamon Gillis.
Honorary pallbearers were M.J. Burke, Ed Wilson, Charles Deason, Franklin Deason, Darvin Deason Paul Bingham and Larry Johnson.
Mr. Walter E. Lewis, 79, of Perkins dies on Aug. 6
Mr. Walter E. Lewis, 79, of Perkins died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005.
His funeral was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Magnolia Baptist Church. Burial was in the Perkins Cemetery.
Mr. Lewis was a native of Jenkins County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired building contractor. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bea R. Lewis; two sons, Jeff Lewis of Perkins and Terry Lewis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Keith Fowler of Mansfield; two brothers, Gilford Lewis of Atlanta and Lynwood Lewis of Perkins; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were members of the North Jenkins Fire Dept.
Mrs. Ruby Woodcock Hood, 85, dies on Aug. 8
Mrs. Ruby Woodcock Hood, 85, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral was 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with the Revs. Travis Ivey and Wayne Swanson officiating. Burial was in Lanier Cemetery.
Mrs. Hood, a native of Bulloch County, retired from Jockey International, Inc. after 17 years. She volunteered as a senior companion through Georgia Southern University. She was a member of Abundant Life Church where she was in the Senior Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and a son-in-law.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty Stewart of Portal and Bonnie and Johnny Becton of Millen; four sons and daughters-in-law, Arnold Wade and Polly Sampson Jr. of Millen and Oscar Jimmy and Kaye Vickery, James Edwin and Frankie Vickery and Jerry and Ann Hood, all of Statesboro; two sisters, Lorine Ennis of Tennessee and Neitha Knight of Augusta; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Rose Mary Rachels, 41, of Twin City dies Aug. 22
Miss Rose Mary Rachels, 41, of Twin City, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005.
Her funeral will be 4 p.m. today, (Wednesday,) Aug. 24, at the New Life Tabernacle in Twin City. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Miss Rachels was a native of Bulloch County. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Catherine Wilkerson (Glenn) Garvin of Twin City; two sisters, Betty Jean Fellers of Cartersville and Marie Lane of Sylvania; four brothers, Glenn Wilkerson of Waynesboro, Roy Rachels of Swainsboro, Lee Rachels of Twin City and Allen Rachels of Sylvania.
Active pallbearers will be nephews Glenn Wilkerson Jr., Jason Wilkerson, Alan Rachels Jr., Ryan Rachels, Freddie Lee Rachels III and Travis Slater.
Mrs. Jean Jarrell Coggins, 80, dies on Sept. 1
Mrs. Jean Jarrell Coggins, 80, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Garfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Brown officiating.
Burial was in the Hebron Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, William L. (Bill) Coggins; a daughter, Susan Lydia Coggins of Rochester, N.Y.; two sons, Lt. Col. Randy Coggins, U.S. Air Force of Stutgart, Germany and Mark Coggins of Millen; a brother, Julian H. Jarrell of Gray; and six grandchildren.
Harold Leslie Echols, 73, of Millen died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Millen Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Hood and Maurice Crowder officiating.
Burial was in the Millen Cemetery.
Mr. Echols was a native of Forsyth County, a United States Navy veteran and a retired employee of The Millen News.
He was a member of the Millen Baptist Church where he attended the Boch Sunday School Class and was a charter member of both the Magnolia Country Club and the Millen Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson Echols of Millen; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Gene Walker of Thomson; two grandchildren, Ashley Walker and Wesley Walker, both of Thomson; two brothers, Charles Echols of Thomson and Larry Echols of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and a sister, Winona Mathis of Acworth.
Mr. Echols was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Ralph Echols and Ruby Day Echols; a brother, Donald Echols; and a sister, Audrey Thacker.
Active pallbearers were nephews. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Boch Sunday School class and the Magnolia Country Club.
Jenkins native Nita J. Williams, 59, dies Aug. 30
Mrs. Nita Mae Jackson Williams, 59, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Long Branch Church of God with the Revs. Britt Peavy, Tony Hewitte and Wilbur Martin officiating.
Burial was in the Williams Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Williams was a native of Jenkins County, a homemaker and a member of the Long Branch Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Otis Junior Williams of Millen; three daughters, Janie Marie Foreman of Illinois, Martha Ann Brown of Garfield and Loretta Sue Kirkland of Statesboro; a son, Walter Otis Williams of Millen; two sisters, Barbara Ann Graham of Portal and Vickie Dixon of Sardis; four brothers, David Bryant of Lawton, Okla., Roland Jackson and James Jackson, both of Millen, and Andrew Jackson of Garden City; and 13 grandchildren.

Mrs. Sara Nell Kent, 84, of Millen dies on Sept. 6
Mrs. Sara Nell Waters Kent, 84, of Millen passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005.
Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Millen Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Hood officiating.
Mrs. Kent was a member of the Millen Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the afternoon Women on Missions group. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cody Kent.
A lifelong resident of Jenkins County, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Julian Wade of Millen; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Gloria Kent of Millen, David and Sheila Kent of Marietta and Steven Kent of Millen; five grandchildren, Billy Kent, John Kent, Patrick Wade, Katie Kent and Jordan Kent; a great-grandchild, Will Kent; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Joe Waters of Millen and Raymond and Nina Waters of Camilla; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were grandsons. Memorials may be given to the Millen Baptist Church or the American Red Cross for hurricane survivors.
Mr. Albert McDougald Jr., 67, dies at his residence
Mr. Albert Bernard McDougald Jr. age 67, died Saturday, Sept. 3, at his residence.
Funeral Services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept 6, at the Statesboro First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tim Bauler and Dr. John Bressler officiating. Burial was in the Eastside Cemetery.
The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was the son of the late Albert Bernard McDougald Sr. and Sidney Newton McDougald. He was a 1956 graduate of Statesboro High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor of arts and Journalism. Mr. McDougald became a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity in 1958. He was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard. Mr. McDougald was the owner and president of McDougald Oil Company in Statesboro for many years. He was a member of the Statesboro Rotary Club and the Statesboro First Presbyterian Church. Mr. McDougald was also a member of two local prayer groups.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Brown McDougald of Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Sidney McDougald David and Brad David of Marietta; a son, Albert Bernard McDougald III (Bert) of Statesboro; two grandchildren, Maggie David and Emmie David of Marietta; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann McDougald Monk and Richard Monk of Birmingham, Ala.; his mother-inlaw, Mary Elizabeth Brown of Garfield; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Kay Brown of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Pauline Kent Johnson, 89, of Millen, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.13, at the Rosemary Baptist Church with Revs. Jerry Hood and David Mullins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Jenkins County and was a homemaker and member of Rosemary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glynn Augustus Johnson, a daughter, Juanita Martin, and a son Albert Sydney Johnson.
Survivors include four daughters; Carolyn J. Farrow, Betty Saxon, Martha Ransom, all of Millen and Barbara J. Pinkston of Martinez; a sister Madeline Johnson of Savannah; two brothers, Clinton Kent of Garfield and Clifford Kent of Savannah; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Larry Barron, Michael Curtis Corbett, Phillip Smith, Quinnie Lane, James Davis, Lester Brinson Jr. and Jesse Johnson.
