Julia Dell Olliff Dixon
Julia Dell Olliff Dixon, 77, of Metter died on Sunday, November 16, 2003, at Metter Nursing Home. A native of Candler County, she was a retired bookkeeper and owner of Dixon Florist and was a member of Metter First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Dixon and her parents F.H. and Julie Donaldson Olliff.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Cecile Blackburn of Metter; nieces and husbands, Beth and John Young of Macon, Jan and Lamar Stapleton of Glennville, June Olliff Edenfield of Metter and Crystal Olliff of Metter; nephews and wives, Lamar and Anne Olliff of Lakeland, FL, Robert and Penny Olliff of Pooler, Kenny and Connie Olliff of Kennesaw, Danny and Brenda Olliff of Metter, Shon and Candy Olliff of Metter and W.D. Olliff Jr. of Waycross; brothers and wife, Jim Frank and Joy Olliff of Metter and W.D. Olliff Sr. of Metter; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Danny Olliff, Lamar Olliff, Robert Olliff, Kenny Olliff, Shon Olliff, John C. Young, Lamar Stapleton and Doug Olliff.
Honorary pallbearers were the Esther Sunday school Class.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at Metter First Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Pifer officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.

J. Howard Quarles
J. Howard Quarles, 86, of Twin City, died on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born on April 17, 1917 and grew up in Edgefield, S.C. and was the son of the late John W. and Fannie Joe Strom Quarles. He was preceded in daeth by his wife Lou Rhoden Quarles. He served in the Armed Forces in WWII and was part of the Army that landed on Normandy Beach. He was co-founder of Twin City Manufacturing Company where he served as president from 1946 to 1991 when he retired. He was also a former mayor of Twin City. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church and served as treasurer for many years and was a member of the Calvary Men’s Sunday School class. He was on the Board of Directors at Durden Banking Company, a charter member of Twin City Lions Club, a Mason and a Shriner. He was a former Director of the Emanuel Medical Center and past member of the Emanuel County Development Authority and past President of the Twin City Development Authority.
Survivors include three sisters, Sara Coleman of Pacolet, S.C., Ruth Hair of Greenwood, S.C. and Martha Pearl Quarles of Edgefield, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Lee Rountree, Wayne Collins, Clarke Dixon, Shane Scarboro, Tommy Durden, Rusty Simmons and Andy Walden.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Calvary Men’s Sunday School Class and Deacons of Twin City First Baptist Church Durden Banking Company Board of Directors, Alton Simmons, Tim Cockfield and Toby Wells.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 14, at Twin City First Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery in Edgefield, S.C.

Lois Cowart Oliver
Lois Cowart Oliver, 85, of Cobbtown died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton.
The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a homemaker and a member of Cobbtown United Methodist Church for over 60 years and was an avid reader.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie Curl of Collins, Sara Oliver of Savannah, Monette and Frank Monroe of Bartow, Fl., and Teena and Wayne Lynn of Collins; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Page officiating.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Funderburk, Frank Murphy, Raymond Brown, Wallace Oliver, Danny Ray Collins and Buddy Collins.

Willie Lewis Aldrich
Willie Lewis Aldrich, 77, of Metter died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
The Candler County native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer and an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific. He was a member of the Metter Church of God, an avid fisherman and raised quail.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wright Aldrich; five sons and daughters-in-law, David Stubbs of Polk City, Fl., Mike and Mary Nell Aldrich, Broadus and Renee Aldrich, Lannie and Denise Aldrich, all of Metter, and Lonnie Aldrich of Reidsville; step-children Richard and Linda Johnson of Augusta, Nancy and Dean Nichols of Metter and Dennis and Tracy Johnson of Dublin; brothers, Harold Aldrich, Wade Aldrich, Burton Aldrich, Clayton Aldrich and Freddie Aldrich, all of Metter; a sister, Evelyn Miles of North Augusta, S.C.; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Metter Church of God with burial in Primitive Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Varney Aspinwall and the Rev. Nathan Smith officiating.
Pallbearers were nephews. Honorary pallbearers were men of the senior adult Sunday school class.

Gordon B. ‘G. B.’ Williams
Gordon Brooks ‘G. B.’ Williams Sr., 88, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, earning the Purple Heart. The native of Bulloch County bought a farm and moved to Candler County many years ago. He was a member of Metter Primitive Baptist Church for over 30 years, was an avid outdoorsman and loved sports.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Barnes Williams of Metter; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Debra Williams of Statesboro; a daughter, Ann Mercer of Savannah; two brothers, Darwin Williams of Register and Osborne Lee Williams of Statesboro; two sisters, Martha James of Kennesaw and Geraldine Deal of Statesboro; two grandsons and granddaughter-in-law, Douglas Williams and Brooks and Melanie Williams; and one great-grandson, Zachary Williams.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Metter Primitive Baptist Church with burial in Lower Lotts Creek Cemetery. Elder John Shelton Mikell and Elder Kurt Bacon officiated.
Pallbearers were Robert F. Williams, Hal Williams, Gilbert James, Danny Williams, Dexter Williams and James Manley.

Ignacio Jaramillo
Ignacio Jaramillo, 16, of Metter, died Friday, November 28, 2003 at his home. He was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico and was in the ninth grade at Metter High School. He loved low-rider cards and collected Dragon Ball-Z cards and was an artist.
He is survived by his mother, Susana Granados of Metter; two brothers, Jose Gonzalez and Michael Gonzalez; four sisters, Noemi Jaramillo, Gabriela Jaramillo, Susana Jaramillo and Alejandra Jaramillo, all of Metter; maternal grandparents, Daniel Granados and Cecilia Cabrera.
Funeral mass will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Metter with Father Vic Subb officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Cemetery. Rosary will be held Wednesday evening (today) at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Martin Granados, Reyes Baca Jr., Juan Jaramillo Jr., Maximo Baca, Daniel Baca and Lorenzo Jaramillo Jr.

Beaulah Pruett Bradley, 66, of Metter, died Monday, December 8, 2003, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro.
She is survived by her husband, Lucious “Buck” Bradley of Bloomingdale; one daughter, Mary Screws of Metter; three sons, Michael Watson of Columbia, S.C., Donald Seagraves and Douglas Seagraves, both of Buford, S.C.; one sister, Margaret Vinson of Richlands, VA; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Abby West Cemetery in Savannah at 2 p.m.

James Bernard Crone
James Bernard Crone, 82, of Metter died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Candler County Hospital in Metter. He was born in Brooklyn, IL and had lived many years in Metter. He retired as a plant manager at American Argo in Metter and was an Army veteran of World War II where he was a pilot. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline Kathryn S. Crone.
He is survived by four sons, Eldon R. Walters of Turley, OK, Steven M. Crone of Rocky Mount, N.C., Keith A. Crone of Metter and Jimmy Crone; two daughters, Patricia J. Gatlin of Leighton, AL and Karen S. Terry of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Imhoff Cemetery in Congerville, IL.

Ottis Treaby Turner Cowart
Ottis Treaby Turner Cowart, widow of Cleon Cowart, 100, died Friday, October 17, 2003, at her daughter’s residence in Ridgeland, S.C. She was born September 6, 1903 in Candler County. She was preceded in death by her father, James T. Turner and mother, Sarah Proctor Turner, five brothers, eight sisters and a daughter, Frances C. Craft and three granchildren. She was a seamstress for Levy’s Department Store in Savannah. She was a member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Emanuel County.
Survivors include two sons, Calvin Cowart and Bob Cowart, both of Savannah; two daughters, Shirley Domzalski of Evans, and Clara Shuman Bennett of Ridgeland, S.C.; 28 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 21, at Sauls Funeral Home in Ridgeland, S.C. Burial was in Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery at 3 p.m.

Marlene Smith Miles
Marlene Smith Miles, 72, of Tifton died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Born in Way-cross, she was the daughter of the late Walter Marsh Smith and Viola Rose Johnson Smith. She was a retired Media Specialist with the Tift Co. School system, a very active member of the Tifton First Baptist Church and the Gardener Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her brother, O.A. Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. “Bobby” Miles of Tifton; two daughters and son-in-law, Marsha Miles of Jacksonville, FL and Melanie and Steve Morgan of Roswell; one brother, Morris A. Smith Sr. of Irwin County; grandchildren, Miles and Diana Morgan of Roswell; one nephew, Andy Smith of Tifton; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Troy Hampton, Bill Johnson, Billy Selph, Ray Worley, Gene Seigler, Joe Johnson, Clair Troxell, and Billy Wood.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Adult III Sunday School department of the church and media specialists of the Tift County School system.

Ed Schwabe Sr.
Ed Schwabe Sr., 88, of Swainsboro died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness.
A native of Crisp County and a 1939 graduate of Oglethorpe University, he was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He served as head football coach for Swainsboro High School, Johnson County and Candler County for many years. In 1950, he led the Swainsboro High football team to an undefeated season. In 1977, Mr. Schwabe was honored by being inducted in Oglethorpe University’s Sports Hall of Fame.
He was owner and operator of Payne-Schwabe Buick-Pontiac and was a member of the Buick Dealer Council. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and past chairman of the administrative board, and a member and past president of Swainsboro Kiwanis Club, and served on the Swainsboro City Recreation Authority. He also served on the board of directors with First Federal Savings and Loan.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Taylor Schwabe of Swainsboro; three sons, Francis Edward Schwabe Jr. of Blacksburg, Va., Charles Taylor Schwabe of Swainsboro, and Jonathan Schwabe of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Clarke Schwabe and Phillip Schwabe of Swainsboro; Kate Schwabe of New York, N.Y.; and Lt.. Clay Schwabe of Boulder, Co.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. in First United Methodist Church of Swainsboro with the Rev. Benjy Varnell and the Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Interment followed in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were former Swainsboro High School football players coached by Mr. Schwabe and members of Swainsboro Kiwanis Club.

Viola Bragdon Arledge
Viola Bragdon Arledge, 90, a native of Candler County died on Monday, November 24, 2003. She was the wife of the late Judson Arledge Sr. and the daughter of the late Clifford and Selma Bragdon of Metter. She worked for 26 years in a shirt factory. She was a member of the Church of God in Metter.
Survivors include her daughter, Eunice Beasley and husband, Wesley of Register; one son, Judson Arledge Jr. and wife Lynn of Swainsboro; one brother Claude Bragdon of Metter; eight grandchildren; two-step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be ushers of Metter Church of God.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Metter Church of God with Rev. Royce Mosley and Rev. Nathan Smith officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.
