Norman McDonald
Norman McDonald, 86, of Metter died on January 9, 2004, at Candler County Hospital. A retired electrician and member of Metter First Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by a son, Winston McDonald and three brothers, Vernon McDonald, E.J. McDonald and Vasco McDonald.
He is survived by his wife, Doris McDonald of Metter; a daughter, Joyce McDonald of Atlanta; stepchildren, Thomas Cubellis of Jacksonville, FL, Rick Cubellis of Buford, Dennis Cubellis of St. Louis, MO and Patricia Collette of Cummings; two sisters, Edith Pierce of Savannah and Ethel Bollinger of Waycross; a brother, Broughton McDonald of Rincon; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Justin Rowland, David Rowland, Chris Rowland, Matt Long and Jessica Long. Honorary pallbearers were Carroll Thompson and J.R. Edenfield.
Funeral services were held on Monday, at Metter First Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Pifer and Rev. Andy Miles officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Loretha Samples
Loretha Samples, 50, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Candler County Hospital. She was a member and Assistant Pastor at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in Metter. She attended school at Lillian Street High School in Metter, Swainsboro Technical College in Swainsboro, and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. She received an Associate of Arts degree from East Georgia College in Swainsboro. While attending East Georgia College, she received the The Culture of the Non-Western World Award and the Minority Advising Award. She also studied a the International Correspondence School of Scranton, PA in 1995. She worked for the Georgia public schools systems of Emanuel County, Candler County and Bibb County and was employed as secretary for Samples Tiles and Carpet.
She is survived by her husband, Jermone Samples of Metter; two sons, Antonio and Theresa Byrd of Cincinnati, OH and Davon Byrd of Metter; six brothers, Ricky Ricks of Macon, Bill Spann of Collins, Wilburt Butler of Norfolk, VA, Kenneth Butler, Richard Butler and Lindsey Bellermar, all of Metter; seven sisters, Elaine Ricks of Macon, Margaret Eason-Hughes of Stillmore, Becky Bond of Orlando, FL, Willene Wiggins and Glennell Eason, both of Swainsboro, Elitha Butler of Metter and Blanche Bellermar of Miami, FL; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 15, at W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home with interment at Mercer Grove Church Cemetery in Metter.

Carey Latermer Rawlins
Carey Latermer Rawlins, 79, of McRae died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004.
A native of Weirsdale, Fl., he was the son of the late Olin Latermer and Dolly Watson Rawlins. He was a retired salesperson with swift Meat Co., and was a member of Piedmont Baptist Church of Marietta. He was a 50-year member of Chamblee Masonic Lodge #444 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Byrd Rawlins, and a son, David C. Rawlins.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Diane Rawlins of Norcross; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen R. and Tommy Allen of Metter; brothers, Roy Rawlins of McRae, Gerald Rawlins of Barnesville, J. C. Rawlins of Macon, and Omri Rawlins of Murfreesboro, Tn.; sisters, Laverne Johnson and Marie Horne, both of Muzella; and five grandchildren, April Mims of Charleston, S.C., Lauren Blaszyk of Atlanta, Blake Rawlins of Atlanta, Kyle Coleman of McRae and Faith Coleman of Metter.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home. Interment followed at 4 p.m. in Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta.

Howard Turbyfill
Howard Turbyfill, 75, of Aline died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
He was born in Asheville, N.C., and moved to Metter 25 years ago from Miami, Fl. He was a retired union contract electrician and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dealice Griffen.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith and Lisa Turbyfill of Oak Park and Stacey Turbyfill of Aline; two daughters and a son-in-law, Teri Schadt of Eatonton and Kelly and A. J. Mcleod of Oak Park; a brother, Buddy ‘Ernest’ Turbyfill of Asheville; two sisters, Juanita Long and Wanda Turbyfill, both of Asheville; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, in Metter.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hooks Chapel, with burial following at Cool Springs Cemetery.

Mildred Bird Lanier
Mildred Bird Lanier, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
The native and lifelong resident was a homemaker and a member of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church. She was a member of the Union Community homemaker’s club and the Keenagers. The widow of Sidney Reginald Lanier, her family was her prized possession.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Nancy Lanier and Jerry and Phebia Lanier; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and J. L. Ward, all of Metter; grandchildren, Sidney Lanier, Stanley Lanier, Stevie Lanier, Reggie Lanier, Lanier Ward, Sonya Durrence, and Kathi Mentzer; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Sam Bowen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were male members of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church.

Frances Parker Johnson
Frances Parker Johnson, 84, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
The Emanuel County native lived most of her life in Candler County. She was a homemaker, employed at Metter Manufacturing Company for 20 years, worked at B.C. Moore’s and Pittman’s Pharmacy. She was the widow of John Osbert Johnson.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John Robert and Patsy Johnson and James Alton and Patricia Johnson, all of Metter; a daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Wrex Miller of Meldrim; sister, Cleta Drake of Midville; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in Union Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Nathan Smith officiated.
Grandsons were pallbearers.

Theo C. Smith
Theo C. Smith, 85, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004.
The Bulloch County native lived in Florida, Virginia and Pennsylvania for the past 50 years. He returned to Georgia in 1993 and remained here until his death.
He is survived by two sons, Wade Mincey of Metter and Ricardo ‘Danny’ Smith of Willingboro, N.J.; a daughter, Bonnie Gilchrest of Cobbtown; five brothers, C. L. Smith and O. C. Thomas, both of Metter, Charles Smith of New York, Lenwood Smith of Atlanta, and Michael Smith of Claxton; four sisters, Mamie Smith of Statesboro, Faye Smith of Metter, Ann Smith of Claxton and Liza Carter of Glennville; several grandchildren and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at W. H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home, with burial in Bessanger Church Cemtery in Ada Bell.

Juanita ‘Pud’ Collins
Juanita ‘Pud’ Collins, 82, died January 7, 2004, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Tattnall County and attended Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She loved children and helped to raise her great-nieces and nephews.
She is survived by a sister, Christine M. Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel in Claxton, followed by burial in Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Patsy Mincey
Patsy Mincey, 66, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, in Atlanta. She was a native of Bulloch County and attended school in the public school system.
In 1950, she moved to Homestead, Fl., and returned to Georgia in 1952, residing in Atlanta for over 40 years.
She is survived by a son, Ernie Mincey of Atlanta; a daughter, Melissa Johnson of Atlanta; three brothers, Waldo Coney and Leo Coney, both of Miami, Fl., and Ira Coney of Metter; two sisters, Josie Smith of Goulds, Fl., and Queen Jamison of Metter; two aunts, Ilene McCray of Statesboro and Christine Johnson of Metter; several grandchildren and several cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Mt. Zion Methodist Church; burial was in the church cemetery.

James Eddie Dowd
James Eddie Dowd, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Candler County Hospital. He was born in Candler County, where he lived most of his life.
He was a retired machinest and welder with Rockwell Manufacturing Company and was an avid outdoorsman. A member of NRA, he loved to play and listen to Gospel and bluegrass music and attended Cool Springs Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Myrle Prince Dowd.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roy Clyde and Connie Dowd of Twin City; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Stanley Edenfield of Richmond Hill; brothers, Hilton Dowd, Clinton Dowd and Earl Dowd, all of Metter; a sister, Valda Prince of Metter; grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Jason and Brandi Edenfield, Justin Edenfield, and Roy Clyde Dowd Jr.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in Cool Springs Cemetery. The Revs. Wade McBride and Johnny Beasley officiated.
Pallbearers were Mike Bruner, Bill Hardiman, Jerry Collins, Gene Collins, Kenneth Flynt, David Ward and Russell Dowd.

Ben H. Neal Jr.
Ben H. Neal Jr., 81, of Twin City died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Candler County Hospital after an extended illness.
He was a native of Emanuel County, a retired truck driver and a Primitive Baptist.
He is survived by three sisters, Lenez McLendon of Statesboro, Dorothy Lanier of Twin City and Louise Dearing of Tifton, and one brother, James Neal of Twin City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Elder John Shelton Mikell officiating. Interment followed in Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Twin City.
Pallbearers were Neal Mathis, Melvin Mathis, Johnny Johnson, Buddy Sanders, Jimmy Neal, Steve Hodges, Shelton Chance and Paul Johnson.

Juanita Yarbrough
Juanita Yarbrough, 85, died January 11, 2004, at Shamrock Nursing Home in Dublin.
The Candler County native was a member of First Baptist Church in Claxton and was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis F. Yarbrough.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Pamela Altman of Cadwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Bill Tichelaar of Lilburn; a step-son and wife, Curtis ‘Snoogie’ and Martha Ann Yarbrough of Claxton; a step-daughter and husband, June and Lyndon Kicklighter of Claxton; a brother, Harmon Thrift of the Evergreen community; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Claxton with Dr. Carlton Allen officiating. Burial followed in Eason Cemetery of Claxton.
Pallbearers were Dale Thrift, Glen Thrift, David Yarbrough, John Wilder Thrift, Green Thrift and Wayne Crider.
