dridge “Catfish” Waters Sr.
Eldridge “Catfish” Waters Sr., 86, of Metter died on Monday, February 23, 2004, at Candler County Hospital after a brief illness. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired mechanic and a member of Metter Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother Mrs. Ollie Waters.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Waters of Metter; one son, E.C. Waters Jr. of Metter; three daughters, Rita Snipes of Orange Park, FL, Lisa Howard of Sylvania and Jeannie Deloach of Metter; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Pete Waters, Gerald Waters, Tommy Waters, Eddie Barnes, Grayson Turner and Lamar Holloway. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Howard, Shane Warren, Don Cook, Tommy Deloach and Wallace Coursey.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Metter Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Beasley officiating. Burial with military honors was in Lake Cemetery in Metter.

Ollie Mae Parrish
Ollie Mae Parrish, 60, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Maxie Davis. The Candler County native lived in Glynn County for several years. She attended the public schools of Candler County and was a member of Dixon Grove Methodist Church.
Survivors include, one son, Milton Parrish of St. Petersburg, FL; four daughters, Annie Sanders, Lynn Parrish, Kimmly Parish and Margarita Parrish, all of Brunswick; her step-mother, Cora Lee Williams of Register; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel in Metter. Pastor Wesley Knight of Brunswick officiated.

Carolyn Powell
Carolyn Powell, 66, of Metter died on Monday, March 1, 2004, at Candler General Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
She is survived by her father, Lyman Powell of Metter; one brother, Frank Powell of Fountain Inn, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.

Claude Ellis Hadden
Claude Ellis Hadden, 76, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Candler Hospital in Savannah.
He was born in Tattnall County and lived most of his life in Candler County. He was retired from Candler County Board of Education as a school bus driver and maintenance supervisor. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church. He loved fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Creech Hadden; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jeanette Hadden and Terry ‘Tab’ and Lesia Hadden; daughters and a son-in-law, Pam and Bobby Cowart, Diane Monroe and Christy Schuman; three brothers, Leon Hadden, Talmadge Hadden and Simmons Hadden; a sister, Ann Williams; 12 grandchildren, Kelly Hadden, Reid Hadden, Casey Hadden, Jason Hadden, Jessica Wagner, Jodi Hadden, Jessie Hadden, Cayne Monroe, Beth Williams, Amy Williams, Megan Cowart and Haley Schuman; and three great-grandchildren, Cadyn Monroe, Abigail Hadden and Katie Hadden.
Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Street Baptist Church with burial following in Lake Cemetery. Dr. Jim Wilson officiated.
Pallbearers were Bobby Hadden, Larry Hadden, Greg Strickland, Randy Hadden, J. M. Snipes, and Richard Creech.

Yvette Cook Harrell
Yvette Cook Harrell, 73, died early Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.
She was a native of Metter and lived most of her life in Central, Calif., before moving to Savannah over a year ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Whitemarsh Island Baptist Church, where she was involved with the Ladies Senior Class.
She is survived by a son, Paul Moore of Savannah; a daughter, Janet Rebeiro of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Ray Jernigan of Niceville, Fl., and Nancy Stockwell of Azle, Tx.; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Whitemarsh Island Baptist Church.

Vennie Ray Westberry Bruner
Vennie Ray Westberry Bruner, 68, died Saturday, March 6, 2004.
She was a lifelong resident of Candler County and was a Wal-Mart associate. She was a member of Excelsior Baptist Church for 45 years and the WMU Group. She was preceded in death by a son, Bennie Ray Westberry and three siblings.
She is survived by her husband, Grover Bruner Sr.; sons, Randy Bruner of Forsyth, Joey Bruner and Daniel Vance, both of Metter; a step-son, Grover ‘Bert’ Bruner Jr. of Tampa, Fl.; daughters, Ruby Lynette Stewart, Tammie Peters, and Donna Vance, all of Metter; a step-daughter, Vickie Guiliano of Tampa, Fl.; brothers Homer Westberry of Dublin, Henry Westberry of Bloomingdale, Buddy Westberry of Lenoir, Tn., and Walter Westberry of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Beatrice Braddock of Birmingham, Al.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Excelsior Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Marty Walker and Jimmy Dupree officiated.
Pallbearers were Joe DeLoach, Dean Stone, Steve Veddar, Carroll Sikes, Addison Bragg and Scott Kemp. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Excelsior Baptist Church WMU Group.

Niki Lakita Swint
Niki Lakita Swint, 18, died Friday, March 5, 2004.
She was born on Sept. 13, 1985, in Atlanta. She was a junior at Metter High School and was involved in various activities such as Y-Club, Student Council, Educational Talent Search and the Performing Arts Chorus.
An active member of Thankful Baptist Church in Metter, where she was a member of the choir and president of the Youth Department, she was also a member of Candler County Branch NAACP.
She is survived by her parents, Isadore and Judy Swint of Metter; a sister, Nina Swint of Metter; her grandparents, G. S. and Bearneas Lanier of Metter; and many other loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 12, at 3 p.m. at Sams Creek Baptist Church in Metter. Interment will follow at Mt. Pisgah Church Cemetery in Bulloch County.
Wake services will be held Thursday, March 11, at Thankful Baptist Church from 7-8 p.m.

Charles Smith
Charles Smith, 81, died Sunday, March 7, 2004. He was a native of Bulloch County and resided in Candler County for most of his life.
He is survived by five sons, Jimmy Smith and Jerome Smith, both of Atlanta, Ulysees Smith, Charles Smith and Stanley Smith, all of Metter; six daughters, Linda Grant, Martha Smith, Margaret Alvin, Betty Smith and Cindy Gibson, all of Metter and Evon Smith of Atlanta; one brother, O.C. Thomas of Metter; one sister, Mamie Smith of Statesboro; three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law; 40 grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bessanger Church Cemetery in the Ada Bell community, near Register. Wake service will be held Wednesday (today) from 6-8 p.m. at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel.

Heidi Renee Slater
Heidi Renee Slater, 33, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at her home of a heart attack. The Candler Co. native was a 1988 Metter High School graduate and a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church. She was involved in directing beauty pageants in this area. She was a very active member of the Metter Band program for eight years and continued to work with the band after graduating.
She is survived by a daughter, Cecilia “CeCe” Slater; her parents, Terry and Nancy Slater; two brothers, Scott Slater and Rhett Slater, all of Metter; and one sister Heather Bradshaw of Houston, TX.
Pallbearers will be Mike Bradshaw, Burt Shackleford, Danny Cardell, Ronald Cardell, Larry Cardell, Michael Cardell, Ashley McCranie and Wayne Rowell.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Frankie Hodges officiating, assisted by Dr. Jim Wilson. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eva Belle Parsons
Eva Belle Parsons, 85, of Metter died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Metter Nursing Home. She was a homemaker, an avid gardner and a member of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Rev. Ollie Parsons.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Horne of Pulaski; one son, David Parsons of Clermont, FL; two sisters, Ann Livingston of Macon and Virginia Dorsey of Summerville, S.C.; three brothers, James Hipps of Tallahassee, FL, J.W. Hipps of Citra, FL and Charles Hipps of Valdosta; six grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Steve Horne, Tim Horne, Eric Bragdon, Cory Bragdon, Warren Bragdon and Josh Amesbury.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Ollie Horne officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald.

Joseph P. Aste
Joseph P. Aste, 79, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at his daughter’s residence in Metter, under the care of Ogeechee Area hospice. The native of Medford, Massachusetts was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II. He lived in Hollywood, FL most of his life where he was a roofer. He lived in Oliver for several years before moving to Statesboro in 1991. While living in Statesboro, he worked as a repairman for several real estate agencies and rental property owners. He was a member of the Local 57 in Miami and a member of the St. Matthews Catholic Church.
Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Debi McKinley of Metter, Sandy and Ricky Lane of Sylvania and Laurie A. Lykins of Davie, FL; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Francis “Buddy” Aste of New Hampshire, Ron and Alison Douglas of Mechanicsville, TN and Brett Aste of Hollywood, FL; two sisters, Angelina D’Allocco and Theresa Imbricci, both of Massachusetts; one brother, John Aste of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren, Paul, Scott, Kimberly, Bobby, Todd, Brett, Westin, Christa, Carrie, Eric, Yolanda and Tracy; and ten great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were held on Friday at the Brannen Family Cemetery with Father David Stachurski officiating.

Wilmer C. McGowan
Wilmer C. McGowan, 85, of Vidalia died Saturday, March 20, 2004, in Meadows Nursing Center of Vidalia after a brief illness. He was a native of Candler County and had resided in Vidalia since 1970. He was a retired manager of perishables and frozen foods with Piggly Wiggly Southern of Vidalia, a member of the Vidalia Kiwanis Club, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Vidalia Old Line Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy McGowan of Vidalia; two sons, Wilton C. McGowan of Union, S.C. and Larry McGowan of Anderson, S.C.; one step-son, Butch Henry of Soperton; two step-daughters, Terri Lockhart of Vidalia and Ann Stokes of Cooper City, FL; two brothers, George McGowan of Metter and John Ed McGowan of Covington; one sister, Lucille Donaldson of Twin City; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jim Donaldson, William Donaldson, Brian McGowan, Mark Donald-son, Dennis McGowan and Josh Johnson.

Dolores “Faye” Russo
Dolores “Faye” Russo, 70, died in Orlando, FL on Saturday, March 20, 2004. In her early years, she lived in Metter and attended Metter Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ruth and L.M. Russo. She was niece of the late Vera Mayo Fine and the late Ora Mayo Meadows who lived in Metter.
She is survived by a brother, Jerry Russo of Orlando, FL; a sister, Joyce Ebbets High of Ormond Beach, FL; an aunt, Mildred Sears of Vidalia; cousin, Laurita Samples of Metter; and other cousins, seven nieces and nephews and fourteen great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 27, at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Lamar Samples officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral time.
