Gregory Cheley
Gregory Cheley, 27, of Metter died Friday, March 26, 2004. He was a native and lifelong resident of Candler County.
He is survived by one son, Tremaine Collins of Metter; his mother, Carrie Cheley of Cobbtown; two brothers, Dennis Cheley and Henry Brownlee, both of Metter; two sisters, Charlissa Brownlee of Leesburg, FL and Teresa Brownlee of Brunswick; paternal grandparents, Cecil and Ola Mae Woods of Metter; eight aunts, three uncles and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home. The burial was in the Steep Hill Church Cemetery near Cobbtown.

Robert Wesley “Bobby” Beshires
Robert Wesley “Bobby” Beshires, 55, of Glennville formerly of Cobbtown, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after a brief illness. He was a member of Cobbtown Methodist Church and attended Tattnall/Evans County Training Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eloise Beshires and a half-sister, Carolyn Mangum.
He is survived by a half sister, Mary Kate Webester of Bloomingdale.
Graveside services were held on Sunday in Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown with Rev. Gary Page officiating.

Pearl Port Blakely
Pearl Port Blakely, 62, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at her home in Metter. The Charleston County, S.C. native had resided in Metter for the past six years. She was a member of Resurrected Hope Tabernacle. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Deloach; four sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cheri Blakely Jr., Randy and Cheryl Blakely, Willie and LaRhonda Blakely and Marvin L. Loetz, all of Iowa; three daughters and son-in-law, Crystal D. Thompson and Robin Gibson, both of Metter and Annette and Richard Jones of AL; five brothers, Ben Port, Eugene Port, James Port, and Johnny Port, all of Charleston, S.C. and Harvey Port of Reidsville; six step-sisters, Geneva Powell of S.C., Delores Coker, Mae McCartha, Sharon Thornall and Joyce Myers, all of S.C. and Kathy Vereen of Metter; two step-brothers, Jesse Port of FL, and Roy Port of Metter; 30 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) at 6 p.m. at J. Mellis NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Canoochee Cemetery.

Madge Lasseter Hendricks
Madge Lasseter Hendricks of St. Simons Island and formerly of Metter died March 27, 2004 at Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick campus. She had been a resident of Heritage Retirement Center on St. Simons Island since September of 2001.
A daughter of Ava Sutton and Zadoc Wilder Lasseter, she was born in Vienna, but lived in Rochelle during her youthful years. One of eight children, she is survived by three sisters.
A graduate of the then Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in piano. she was involved in a broad range of campus activities. She did graduate work at Emory University Atlanta and studied piano at Chicago Musical College. She was on the library staff at the New York City Library for several years.
Mrs. Hendricks was married to the late Roy A. Hendricks of Metter where they lived for the major part of their fifty-six years of marriage. In Metter, she was an English teacher at Metter High School and was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, where she was church organist for many years. She was always active in church organizations and activities. She was a member of Metter Garden Club and a charter member of Daughters of the American Revolution.
While residing at Heritage Retirement Center, she would entertain at the piano on occasion.
She is survived by her duaghter and son-in-law, Dana Hendricks Blair and William E. “Billy” Blair of St. Simons Island; two granddaughters, Dana “Wiffi” Blair Anderson of Huntsville, AL and Jincy “Binky” Blair O’Neal of Asheville, N.C.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Gene Hiers officiating. Interment was in Upper Lotts Creek Cemetery.

Michael M. Bland
Michael M. Bland, 84, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
The Emanuel County native lived most of his life in Candler County. He was a member of Metter United Methodist Church for over 40 years, a Sunday School teacher and a former Lay Leader.
He was a 1940 graduate of The University of Georgia with a degree in agriculture. During World War II, he was in the United States Army Air Corps and was a graduate of the Adjutant General’s school at Louisiana State University. After returning from the war, he was a Veteran Farm Training Instructor in Candler County. He served as president of the Farm Bureau and was a director and chairman of the board of Farmers Mutual Exchange.
He was instrumental in the acquisition of the land for the Candler County Hospital and was a charter member of the Candler County Hospital Authority and a director for 24 years. He was a director for Pineland Cellular Inc., a director of Pineland Telephone Cooperative for 34 years, a charter member of the Dixie Land Pioneers, a former Soil Conservationist of the Year and a lifelong farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Rogers Bland; son, Mark M. Bland; daughter-in-law, Terri Cartee Bland; and grandson Jordan Michael Bland, all of Metter.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Metter United Methodist Church with burial in Primitive Grove Cemetery.

Repard Cowart
Repard Cowart, 80, died Saturday at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall Co. native and lifelong resident was a truck driver and avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Marga Cowart of Collins; daughter and son-in-law; Tammy and Doc Hackle; granddaughters, Victoria Pittman and Shianne Hackle, all of Lyons; one brother, Ollie Cowart of Garden City; three sisters, ImmaJean Funk of Savannah, Edna Mae Otten and Rosa Lee Durden, both of Pooler; step-children, Larry Jarriel of Augusta, Brenda Walsh of Collins, Yvonne Harvey of Bellville, Tammy Phillips of Claxton and Billy Jarriel of Collins; several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were John McWilliams, Randy Martin, Frank Conley, Billy Jarriel, Phil Collins and Glenn Walsh.
Funeral services were held on Monday, at 2 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Burial was in Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Mary DeLoach Tucker
Mary DeLoach Tucker, 91, died March 30, 2004 at the Metter Nursing Home. The Evans County native had resided in Metter for years, but was a member of Union Methodist Church in Evans County. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Tucker, a granddaughter, Mary Jane Beasley, and a great-granddaughter, Shona Jarriel.
Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jimmie Carol Tucker of Valrico, FL; one daughter, Joyce Bird of Metter; four brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Carl Beasley, Ken Beasley, Dopson Deal, Tony Nevils, Al Jones and David Todd. Honorary pallbearers were Elton Tucker, Donnie Strickland, Danny Todd, Gene Strickland, George Strickland, Roy Gulledge and Jack DeLoach.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Tom Deal officiating. Burial was in Union Methodist Church Cemetery.

Georgia Youngblood
Georgia Waters Youngblood, 84, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at Spanish Oaks Retreat after a long battle with Alzheimers. The Guyton native was a graduate of Georgia Southern College. She taught for many years in the Jenkins County Schools and later served as a supervisor in the Chatham County school system. She had been a member of Epworth United Methodist Church since 1972. She was a member and past state president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an accredited flower show judge and enjoyed garden club activities and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Paul W. Youngblood.
Survivors are a daughter, Pauletta Y. Atwood of Sea Island; three sons, Paul W. Youngblood Jr. of Metter, Woodrow H. Youngblood of Augusta and Samuel E. Youngblood of Savannah; four grandchildren, Aimee Garity of Metter, Molly A. Taylor of Atlanta, Charles S. Youngblood of Hephzibah and Max Youngblood of Savannah; three great-grandchildren, Meghan Garity of Metter, Robert Miller Taylor of Atlanta and Cody Youngblood of Hephzibah; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Wilbert Thomas Dowd
Wilbert Thomas Dowd, 78, of Metter died on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at his residence. He was retired from Excelsior EMC with 38 years of service. He was a army veteran of World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Annabel Bestwick Dowd of Metter; two daughters, Nancy Bryant and Linda Jo Barber, both of Metter; three grandchildren, Andy Bryant of Metter, Doy Bryant of Portal and LeAnn Mobley of Metter; two great-grandchildren, Courtney Bryant of Portal and Autumn Bryant of Metter.
Pallbearers were Kenny Davis, Herman Strange, Ronald Cardell, Danny Cardell, Al Jones and Ray Craft.
Funeral services were held on Monday, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Wilson officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.

William Rodriquez Strange
William Rodriquez Strange departed this life on Friday, April 2, 2004 in Baghdad, Iraq. William (Rah Ra), as he was called, was a native of Emanuel County and a 2003 graduate of Swainsboro High School. He served with the 91st Engineer Batallion 1st Cavalry Army Unit in Baghdad. He entered the military on July 8, 2003 and graduated basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri on October 24, 2003. He was a member of White Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Lillie Jenkins of Adrian; his father, William Strange of Metter; his step-father, Ricky Jenkins of Adrian; maternal grandmother, Ada Burke of Twin City; paternal grandparents, William and Gussie Strange of Pulaski; five sisters, TaWanna and Dewayne Davis, Kia Burke, both of Adrian, Yashima Strange of Metter, LiTasha Worthen of Orange, N.J., and LaChina Worthen of Durham, N.C.; three brothers, Sgt. Perry and Trilisa Burke of Jacksonville, N.C., Darius Burke of Adrian and Ricky Worthen of Orange, N.J.; and several aunts, uncles and ther relatives.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 9, 11am at the Swainsboro City Auditorium with burial in the Rountree Grove Church Cemetery.

John Dean Murphy
John Dean Murphy, 74, of Collins died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at the V.A. Hospital in Dublin. The Tattnall Co. native lived all of his life in Collins. He was a farmer for over 30 years and a Korean War Army veteran.
He is survived by a sister, Luell Wilson, of Erwing, TN; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Murphy of Collins; nephews, George Murphy of Canton, Frank Murphy of Collins and Donald Wilson of Erwin, TN; nieces Jennie M. Warren of Collins, Michelle Tapp of Erwin, TN and Mary M. Wilds of Reidsville; and several great nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held on Tuesday at Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Virginia Ruth Prigeon
Virginia Ruth Prigeon, 62, of Metter died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Candler County Hospital after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late William and Ethel Mae O’Daniel.
She is survived by her husband, J.C. Prigeon of Metter; sons, Nicholas Prigeon and Casey Prigeon, both of Metter; and sisters, Betty Fulmer and Wilma Fulmer, both of Metter.
A memorial service was held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Beasley officiating.

William “Bill” Wilson
William “Bill” Wilson, 52, of Metter died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Metter Nursing Home under the care of Vista Hospice. The Candler Co. native and lifelong resident was disabled but loved fishing and guns. He was the son of the late Bessie Lane Wilson.
He is survived by his aunts, Beulah Hooks of Metter; and Bernistine Lane of Portal; and several cousins.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Rosemary Cemetery with Rev. Charles Beasley officiating.
