Myrtle Holland Joyner
Myrtle Holland Joyner, 82, of the Bethany Nursing Center died early Saturday morning, July 17, 2004, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County, a homemaker and a member of Sharpes Chapel Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Felton Joyner; two daughters, Gertie Blanche Joyner and Nettie Ruth Stripling; and one son, Tommy Joyner.
She is survived by four sons, Eugene Joyner and Cecil Joyner, both of Lyons, Larry Joyner of Metter, and Jimmy Joyner of Soperton; one daughter, Bonnie Van Dyke of Lyons; one brother, William Holland of Lyons; one sister, Cassie Anderson of Lyons; eleven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Terry Caraway, Greg Caraway, Aubrey Caraway, Bobbie Holland, David Arnold, and Wally Beasley.
Funeral services were held Monday at First United Methodist Church of Lyons with Dr. Max Hill and Rev. James Aycock officiating. Interment was in Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.

Moses Jackson “Jack” Bowen
Moses Jackson “Jack” Bowen, 69, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Bulloch Co. native was a graduate of Statesboro High School and attended Georgia Military College. He moved to Metter in 1963 when he purchased the Ford dealership. He was a farmer, being instrumental in bringing Vidalia Onions and the Cal-Maine Egg Processing Plant to Candler County and co-founder of Bulloch Memorial Gardens. He owned and operated several businesses over the years and was a member of the Metter-Candler Chamber of Commerce. He attended the Metter Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patsy Edenfield Bowen; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Vicki Bowen of Metter; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Danny Olliff of Metter, Angela and Dennis Hogue, Patti and Kurt Gosch, all of Marietta; brothers, Bill Bowen of Claxton, Jimmy Bowen of Shellman Bluff and Henry Bowen of Washington; one sister, Nell Brady of Savannah; and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Metter Primitive Baptist Church with burial in Lake Cemetery. Elder John Sheldon Mikell and Rev. Brad Brady officiated. Ed Ellis was eulogist.
Pallbearers were nephews, Brad Franklin, Greg Franklin, Bob Brady, Spud Bowen, Chip Bowen, and Tommy Bowen. Honorary pallbearers were C.B. Jones, Olliff McElveen, Wade Aldrich, Charles Brannen, Jerry Rushing, Ray Coursey and Dr. Robert Pence.

Mary E. Cliett Thayer
Mary E. Thayer, 51, of Conyers, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2004. She was born in Savannah in 1953 and graduated from Armstrong College with a degree in Nursing. She currently worked as an RN and was a Nursing Supervisor at Newton General Hospital. She was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church and had recently returned from a mission trip in Kenya. She was loved by everyone who met her. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Cliett.
As a loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister, she was greatly loved and will be missed by her husband, David P. Thayer of Conyers; children, Bucky Hayes, Rebecca Hayes, Daniel Hayes and Jordan Hayes, all of Conyers; step-children, Heather Way, Derek Thayer and David Lee Thayer, all of Ohio; eight step-grandchildren; her father, Flem Cliett of Metter; brothers, John Cliett of Metter, Michael Cliett of Metter, Chris Cliett of Metter and Paul Cliett of N.C.; sisters, Cay Meyer of Dacula, Ann Howell of Savannah and Claire Donaldson of Metter; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Smyrna Presbyterian Church on Wednesday (today), at 11 a.m. with Rev. Busby officating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Interment will follow at Smyrna Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Emmitt R. Lively
Emmitt R. Lively, 83, of Bartow, Fl., died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fl.
The Metter native moved to Bartow 50 years ago and was a truck driver, employed with Smith Bros. Oil Company of Bartow. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Lively of Bartow; four sons, William F. Coleman of Plant City, Fl., George Thomas Lively of Winter Haven, Fl., Emmitt Russell Lively of Bartow and Gregory Leon Lively of Floral City, Fl.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 12, at 2 p.m. at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow with interment following in Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow. The Rev. John Holloway and the Rev. Bill Ivey officiated.

Mitchell Stanton Deal
Mitchell Stanton Deal, 29, of Savannah, passed away Monday, July 26, 2004 surrounded by his close friends and family. The Savannah native was employed with Great Dane and was always full of life ad loved to travel. The children who saw him as number one were: Whitney, Alane, Jacob, Madelyn, Chrissy, Anna, Grace, Morgan, Garrett, Macie, Noah, Caleb, Ryan, Dominque and Gavin. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Grover and Joyce Deal of Metter.
He was survived by his loving mother, Linda Ray Deal of Bloomingdale; a strong loving brother, Adam Jesse Deal of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; father and step-mother, Joe and Marty Deal of Metter; maternal grandparents, Maurice and Vinetta Ray of Bloomingdale; best friend, Edward Hansen of Pooler; a friend, Stephanie Sikes of Ellabell; and many other aunts, uncles and family members.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Floyd “Bubba” Beasley
James Floyd “Bubba” Beasley, 67, of Metter died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Candler County Hospital. The son of Eloise Beasley of Metter and the late Floyd Beasley, he was a native and lifelong resident of Candler County and was a retired timber harvester. He was a member and head deacon of Metter Free Will Baptist Church, where he taught the Young Adult Sunday School class and was youth director for many years. He served in the National Guard for six years.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Sikes Beasley; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Kathy Beasley; a daughter and son-in-law, Jerri and John Goodman; his mother, Eloise Beasley; three grandchildren, Trevin, Aaron and Johnna Goodman; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Charles and Frances S. Beasley, Rev. Johnny and Faye Beasley and Mike and Brenda W. Beasley; a sister, Nancy B. Crosby, all of Metter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Metter Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Guido and Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Sikes, Tim Beasley, Paul Beasley, Elliott Beasley, John Beasley, Richard Beasley, Rusty Beasley, Travis Crosby, Marc Beasley and Zach Beasley.

Jerry Richard Thompson, 54, of Pembroke, died Friday, July 23, 2004.
Survivors include a special friend, Julia Abrams; mother and step-father, Ella Thompson and Talmadge Hadden; sons, Jerry Thompson Jr., Chris Thompson, and Darryl Thompson; one brother, Billy Thompson; and two sisters, Diane Pitts and Debbie Thompson.
Graveside services were held on Monday, at Old Canoochee Cemetery in Emanuel County.

Annie Margaret Bland
Annie Margaret Bland, 86, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Chestnut Ridge Nursing Home in Cummings. The Candler Co. native had moved to Roswell eight years ago to be with her daughter. She was a homemaker, seamstress and a member of the Cedar Street Baptist Church. She was the widow of Frank Bland.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Frankie and Eugene O’Brien of Roswell; grandchildren, Gene O’Brien of Atlanta and Debra and Jeff Peebles of Lawrenceville; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Jack and Ryan Peebles of Lawrenceville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial to follow in Lake Cemetery. Rev. Charles Beasley officiated.

Robert Durden
Robert Durden, 70, of Midway died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Toombs County Nursing Home. The native of Cobbtown was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins and friends, Becky, Ty, Chris and Erica Jenny of Savannah.

Wade McKinley Cartee
Wade McKinley Cartee, 90, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away July 22, 2004. He was born November 6, 1913 in Metter to Levi L. Cartee and Georgia Wallace Cartee. He was a longtime resident of Delray Beach and was a supervisor for the City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Dept. where he worked for 25 years. He was a charter member of Florida Institute of Parks. After retirement, he moved with his wife Carrie to Port Charlotte and both attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Arcadia.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Cartee of Port Charlotte; one son, Wade L. and Janet Cartee of Arcadia; grandchildren, Dustin and Tiffani Cartee of North Port aand Brett Cartee of Arcadia.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Akin-Davis Funeral Home in LaBelle, FL with Rev. Sammy Brooks officiating. Interment was in the Fort Denaud Cemetery.

Jimmy Larry Ricks Sr.
Jimmy Larry Ricks Sr., 58, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2004. He was a native of Laurens County and had lived in Soperton for the past 38 years. He was retired from Mohawk Industries and a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Ola Mae Ricks.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Lampp Ricks; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Larry Ricks Jr. and Kay, Johnny Jerrell Ashley Ricks; two daughters, Mazie R. Blackburn and Kayla Victoria Ricks, all of Soperton; step-father, Sammy Warren of Cochran; one brother, Junior Warren of Cochran; five grandchildren,Matilda Blackburn, John Blake Ricks, Dylan Logue, Chris Donaldson and Scott Donaldson; three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Chaise and Kade Donaldson.
Pallbearers were Bobby Cone, Jerrell Brown, Wayne Coleman, John Hardy, Robert Lampp and Bill Lampp.

Michael Lamar Kay Jr.
Michael Lamar Kay, Jr., 26, of Vidalia died on Monday, July 19, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Candler County, a carpenter with W.M. Builders and a member of Evangel Christian Center in Vidalia. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Mike Kay and Sherry Cody of Springfield, IL; his mother, Laurie Patterson of Metter; his step-mother, Nancy Kay of Harlem; his step-father, Lavon Campbell of Metter; his fiancé, Shannon Marie Spinn of Vidalia; two daughters, Alexis Raine Williams of Gainesville, Kennedy Aspen Kay of Vidalia; one son, Michael Noah Kay of Metter; one step-son, Cody Charles Spinn of Vidalia; two sisters, Pamela Monroe and Katie Akins of Metter; four brothers, Bryer Akins of Metter, Nathan Kay of Orlando, FL, Matthew Kay and Justin Kay, both of Harlem; one step-brother, Michael King of Harlem; paternal grandmothers, Nancy Kay of Dublin and Lucille Hill of Swainsboro; maternal grandmother, Edna Lanier of Metter; and maternal grandparents, Kent and Margaret Campbell of Metter.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary in Swainsboro with Rev. Emory Fennell and Rev. Charles Carter officiating. Interment was in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.

Robert Louis Wilkerson
Robert Louis Wilkerson, 71, of Metter died July 13, 2004, at his home.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie James Wilkerson and Jeff Wilkerson; a sister, Mae Evelyn Collins; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Burford Smith Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Beola Wilkerson of Metter; three brothers, Joe Nathan Wilkerson, Jessie Louis Wilkerson and Jerry Wilkerson, all of Metter; three sisters, Gussie Mae Strange of Pulaski, Mary Faye Wilson and Linda Sue Benemon, both of Metter.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church in Bulloch County, with burial following in the church cemetery.
