Mary Alice Cobb
Mary Alice Cobb, 83, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born in Candler County, she had lived in Chatham County for many years. She was of the Baptist faith and retired from Georgia Pacific. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dempsey J. and Mary Nancy “Molly” Jeffcoat; her husband, Eugene E. Cobb; and a son, Billy Ray Harrelson.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Woods Taylor and Richard “Danny” Taylor of Bloomingdale and Margie and Kenneth Turner of Tybee Island; one son, John H. “Jackie” Harrelson Jr. of Bloomingdale; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Marvin Harris of Molena; one brother and sister-in-law, J.D. and Robbie Nell Jeffcoat of Metter; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel with interment at Hillcrest West Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to the South Newington Baptist Church, 462 John Carter Road, Bloomingdale, GA 31302.

Julia Burton
Julia Burton, 84, of Savannah died Friday, July 30, 2004. The Candler County native was the daughter of the late Joe Reeves and Lizzie Reeves Mikell. A resident of Savannah since 1951, she was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church and a longtime employee of Dixieply.
She is survived by two grandsons, Julian Burton and Juan Thomas; one granddaughter, LaTrelle Kilcrease; two sisters, Ethel Morgan of Collins and Louise Grace of Lakewood, NJ; one sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at St. Luke Baptist Church in Savannah. Burial was in St. Matthew Baptist Church Cemetery in Metter.

Edward J. Fulmer Jr.
Private graveside services were held for burial of remains from cremation of Edward J. Fulmer Jr. of Roswell on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004. Burial was at Lake Cemetery in Metter in the Fulmer Plot at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. B. Whatley officiating.
Mr. Fulmer, age 66, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in Roswell. Born in Metter on Sept. 4, 1937, to the late Mary Creed Fulmer and Edward J. Fulmer, he graduated from Metter High School and attended Georgia Military College and Georgia Southern College.
He served in the Air National Guard of the United States and went to work in Atlanta, where he spent the remaining years of his life. He was active in Boy Scouts of America as a leader and he coached many boys’ baseball teams. At the time of his death, he was marketing director of GA US Data Services. He had been a member of the Methodist Church.
He was survived by his wife, Dianna Stamey Fulmer, who later died on Tuesday, June 8, in Roswell from complications of pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome; a daughter, Sommer Fulmer; a son, Mark Fulmer; two sisters, Juanita Fulmer Bracewell of Brentwood, Tn., and Edna Fulmer Lanier of Athens.

Lillie Cox Tootle
Lillie Cox Tootle, 98, died Saturday morning at her residence in Reidsville under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.
The lifelong resident of Tattnall County attended Georgia Teachers College and taught in the Toombs County School System. She was the oldest member of Reidsville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Tommy Thompson Sunday School Class.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and special friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Tootle, and her daughters, Janice Shuman and Sue Tootle.
She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Ann Tootle of Merritt Island, Fl., Theo and Coty Tootle of Jasper, Carroll and Shirley Tootle of Commerce, Ray and Cindy Tootle of Metter, and Mark and Suzanne Tootle of Pooler; a daughter, Betty Tootle of Orlando; a son-in-law, Robert Shuman of Collins; 14 grandchildren, Debbie Tootle, Mike Tootle, Ann Taylor, Craig Tootle, Clay Tootle, Don Shuman, Tom Tootle, Michelle Tootle, Glenn Tootle, Julie Tootle, Joy Tootle, Brian Tootle, Renee Tootle, Janet Tootle; 19 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sharon and Wayne Bland; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Reidsville United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Tootle, Craig Tootle, Clay Tootle, Don Shuman, Tom Tootle, Glenn Tootle and Brian Tootle.

Pearl Jones Tarver
Pearl Jones Tarver, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Metter Nursing Home. She was a member of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Yvonne T. NeSmith of Five Points, Tenn.; two sisters, Annabel Stewart of Edgewater, Fl., and Ruth Clark of San Antonio, Tx.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. in Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church in Metter with burial in the church cemetery. Elder Sam Bowen officiated.
Pallbearers were Homer Lanier, Stuart Proctor, George Scott and Craig Lanier.

Marcia Lanier Sheppard
Marcia Lanier Sheppard, 46, died Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Medical College of Georgia. The Laurens Co. native lived most of her life in Metter and was a homemaker. She attended Open Door Worship Center, collected Indian artifacts and was a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved the outdoors.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Sheppard; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry (Blue) Sheppard II and Elizabeth, Dusty (Duck) Sheppard, all of Metter; god-daughter, Kimberly Walker of Ellenwood; her mother, Mary Lanier Goodwin of Hampton; brothers, Mike Lanier of Stockbridge, Ricky Lanier of McDonough, Jeff Lanier of Rex, Paul and Chris, both of Hampton; sisters, Sharon Nelson of Ellenwood, Renee Fordham of Metter, and Cindy Walker of Jonesboro; and grandsons, Shane Sheppard and Chance Sheppard.
Pallbearers are Fred Deloach, Kenny Flynt, Travis Williams, Shannon Williams, Johnny Coker Sr. and John Coker Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. Ray Woodcock will officiate.

Johnny Melvin Stephens
Johnny Melvin Stephens, 58, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.
The Toombs County native moved to Collins in 1986 and was a fabricator for over 30 years for Thomas & Betts Corporation. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, a good friend to many, a loving son, brother and uncle.
He is survived by his mother, Mary L. Walker Stephens of Collins; brothers, William Stephens of Lawrenceville and Joseph Elton Stephens of Tarrytown; sisters, Jessie Cook of Kilgore, Tx., and Claudette Drury of Fernandina Beach, Fl.; eight nieces and nephews, Tanya Salter, Christy Conner, Erin Drury, Priscilla Scarangella, Katie Stephens, Buddy Hutcheson, Ken Drury and Robert Stephens; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at South Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery near Vidalia.

Margarita Montanez
Margarita Montanez, 52, died Aug. 1, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital in Brian, Tx. She was born Aug. 28, 1952, in Del Rio, Tx.
She is survived by her husband, Doroteo Montanez of San Angelo, Tx.; four children, Doroteo Trevino of Metter, Mary Montanez of San Angelo, Tx., Edwardo Montanez of Del Rio, Tx., and Junita Perez of Herford, Tx.; her father, Jose Zapta of San Angelo; seven sisters; three brothers; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at a private ceremony in San Angelo.
Lela Baughn Tucker
Lela Baughn Tucker, 91, died Friday morning, Aug. 6, 2004, at Metter Nursing Home after a short illness.
The Nauvoo, Al., native spent the last 50 years in Pulaski and Metter. She was a homemaker and the widow of Fred L. Baughn and Grady V. Tucker. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and a step-daughter, Patricia T. Dailey.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, O’Neil and Lucy Baughn of Eldridge, Al., Bill and Shirley Baughn of Savannah, Lowell and Sue Baughn of Statesboro and Jerry and Peggy Baughn of Jacksonville, F.; a daughter and son-in-law, Fredda and Bill Deloach of Metter; four step-sons and step-daughters-in-law, John and Betty Tucker of Centre, Al., Bob and Margie Tucker of Carrollton, Dwayne and Bobbie Tucker of Metter and Lonnie ‘Skeet’ and Martha Tucker of Bellville; two step-daughters and step-sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Bolduc of Metter and Betty and Paul Mongeon of Worchester, Mass.; two sisters, Helen Aultman and Willie Dee Aultman, both of Eldridge, Al.; a brother, R. L. Farris of Birmingham, Al.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 13 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Minister Larry Sheehy and Dr. Jim Wilson officiating. Services were held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper, Al., with Minister Gilbert Behel officiating. Burial was in Old Union Cemetery in Eldridge, Al.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Althea Elizabeth Hartley
Althea Elizabeth Hartley, 79, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Candler County Hospital.
She was born in Americus, but lived most of her life in Pulaski. For many years she was a secretary with Swift and Company and the Diamond Construction Company of Savannah. She was a pianist, loving music, and was of the Baptist faith. She was predeceased by her parents, Jessie Gordon and Nettie Daniel Hartley; a brother, Fort Hartley; and a nephew, Rex Daniel Hartley Jr.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Ereline Hartley of Metter, several nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday (today) at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Elder Tom Deal officiating. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral time at the funeral home.

William Paul Montgomery
William Paul Montgomery, 54, of Alexandria, VA died Sunday, August 22, 2004 in Fairfax County, VA. The Candler County native was the son of Ulysee and Hattie Montgomery. His father preceded him in death. He attended Lillian Street Elementary and High School and later completed a technical school in Alexandria, VA.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Montgomery of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Marcus Wilkerson of Metter and André Mennifield of Maryland; his mother, Hattie Montgomery of Metter; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Carlene Montgomery and Albert Montgomery, all of Woodbridge, VA, Johnny Montgomery of Arlington, VA, Freddie and Claire Montgomery of Eatontown, NJ and Andrew Montgomery of Metter; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Ollie Mae Harrison, Annette and Winston Lawrence of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Hattie Burke of Woonsocket, RI; four aunts; five uncles; and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Mercer Grove Baptist Church in Metter with interment in the church cemetery.

Walter Harry ‘Joe’ Hendrix
Walter Harry ‘Joe’ Hendrix, 71, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Tattnall Community Hospital.
The Tattnall County native lived all of his life in Cobbtown and the Evergreen Community. He was a former Tattnall County school bus driver, former member of the Cobbtown Lions Club and a retired farmer, and he served in the U.S. Army as a corporal. He was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church, a Cobbtown city councilman and a hunting guide at Mill Creek and Beaver Creek.
He was one of the original members of the Melody Masters, which later became the Hymnsmen Quartet, which had just celebrated its 50th anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Joyce Hendrix of Cobbtown; sons Perkins Hudak Hendrix of Decatur and Doy Ott Hendrix of Cobbtown; a daughter, Melanie Campione of Vidalia; a brother and sister-in-law, John Linton and Haydee Hendrix of Wilmington, N.C.; grandsons Colin Vincent Campione and Bartholomew Eason Campione, both of Vidalia; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Lamar and Betty Durden of Cobbtown and Catherine Durden of Tifton.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church, with burial in Sunlight Cemetery. Elder Tom Deal officiated.
Active pallbearers included Larry Hendricks, Larry Durden, Harris Sapp, Keith Hendricks, Collin Schmidt, Mack Baxter, Kenneth Cartee and Teri Shewmaker.
Honorary pallbearers included members of the Hymnsmen Quartet, Mayor and City Council of Cobbtown, George Hudak, Jerry Webb, Billy Exley, Joe Goodson, Henry Kennedy, Herbert Holton, Don Cobb, Horace Shewmaker, Frank Simmons, Steve Starling, Harold Shannon, David Butler, Vaughn Lanier, Silas Webber, Al Sikes and David Ziegler.
