Virgil Edenfield, 54, of Metter died on September 29, 2004 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro after a brief illness.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Derek Brown of Metter; his mother, Minnie Edenfield of Metter; sisters and brothers-in-law, Renee and Broadus Aldrich of Metter, Josephine and G.W. Hendricks of Cobbtown and Rhonda and Ray Rutan of Anamosa, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rufus J. Edenfield Jr. of South Carolina, Ronald and Kathy Edenfield of Villa Rica and Harmon and Jessie Edenfield of Metter; a granddaughter of Hunter Autumn Brown of Metter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Metter Church of God with Rev. Nathan Smith officiating. Burial was in Rocky Creek Baptist Cemetery in Toombs County.
Pallbearers were Chris Billingsley, Johnny Biggers, Benji Crooms, Troy Berry and Greg Edenfield.

Kathryn Baldwin Mainer
Kathryn Baldwin Mainer, 69, of Metter died Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Hospice Savannah. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Corine Baldwin. The native and lifelong resident of Candler County was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Pulaski. She was a former employee of Pleasant View Nursing Home where she worked as a CNA. She was preceded in death by one sister, Debbie S. Summerlin and two brothers, Richard Barwick and Donald Baldwin.
Survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Phyllis Mainer of College Park, Michael and Sharon E. Mainer, Brent and Tosha Mainer and Tony and Carol Mainer, all of Metter, Joseph Mainer of Atlanta and Taurus Mainer of Hopewell, VA; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Lee Mincey, Sharon Mainer, Karon Mainer and Vernice Gay, all of Metter; LaVerne and Louell McCollum of Register, Kathy and Ricky Islar of Statesboro and Donna and José Soto of Midway; two brothers, Rev. Nathaniel Baldwin and Charlie Baldwin, both of Soperton; four sisters, Mary Baldwin of Dublin, Gloria Baldwin of Metter, Marva Brewton of Statesboro and Bettye Padro of Staten Island, NY; 36 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Pulaski. Burial will be in St. Matthew Church Cemetery in Metter. Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and from 4 p.m.-8 p.m.

JoAnne Edenfield
JoAnne Edenfield, 70, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at Wichita Falls, TX. The widow of Troy Edenfield Sr., she had lived in Iowa Park, TX for the past 24 years. She was a Civil Service retiree and a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a son, Troy Edenfield Jr.; grandson, Troy Edenfield III, both of Iowa Park, TX; a niece, Melissa Goforth of Missouri; and lifelong friends, Jane Lewis of Iowa Park, TX and Sam Graham of Wichita Falls, TX.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Antioch Cemetery with Rev. Phil Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday (today) from 6-8 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel.

Selma Christmas Lanier
Selma Christmas Lanier, 84, of Martin Rd., Cartersville, formerly of Metter, died Thursday, September 16, 2004. She was born April 10, 1920, in Bishop-ville, S.C., the daughter of the late Willie and Viola Coulter Christmas. She and her late husband, Claude A.Lanier, were owner-operators of Crossroad Grocery in Metter. Mrs. Lanier was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are childen and their spouses, Betty and Tommy Bass of Mableton, Rose Skillman of West Palm Beach, FL, Ed and Sonya Thompson of Cartersville, J.C. and Rebecca Thompson of Ridgeway, S.C., VI and Gene LaSarge of Deerfield Beach, FL; and 12 grandchildren and a number of great-granchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 20, at 2 p.m. at the Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Home in Metter with Rev. Charles Beasley officiating. Burial was in Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Conyers
James Conyers, 103, of Cobbtown died Sunday, September 5, 2004 at his residence. A native of Greelyville, S.C., he spent most of his life in the Cobbtown and Evergreen communities of Tattnall County. He was a member of Charlton Grove Baptist Church in Cobbtown, where he served as a deacon for 70 years.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Sanford Conyers of Savannah, Alex James and Linda Conyers of Augusta, and Harry and Shirley Conyers of Patterson, N.J.; three daughters, Edna Quaresma of Newark, N.J., Dorothy Campbell of Metter and Bernice Frazier of Cobbtown; a daughter-in-law, Maggie Conyers and a son-in-law, Willie Frazier, both of Hoboken, N.J.; 25 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 11 at 11 a.m. at Charlton Grove Baptist Church in Cobbtown, with burial in the church cemetery. Dr. L. Perry McNeal will be the eulogist. Wake service will be held on Friday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home in Metter.

William “Clifford” Purvis Sr.
William “Clifford” Purvis Sr., 79, died Monday, September 6, 2004, at Hospice Savannah. The Wheeler Co. native moved to Collins in 1984 from Pooler. He was a member and deacon of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and D-Day serving at Omaha Beach. He was a retried civil service employee and was a member of the Roger Wood Masonic Lodge at Cobbtown. Fishing was his hobby. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Anthony and Willie Ethel Purvis and a sister, Willie Mae Crummy.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Meeks Purvis of Collins; three sons and daughters-in-law, W.C. and Lisa Purvis Jr. of South Guyton, Mark and JoAnna Purvis of Claxton, Thomas and Pam Purvis of Stilson; brother, Ralph Purvis of Bethesda, MD; sister, Kathleen Suggs of Martinez; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with burial in the Anderson Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Jim Rogers, Rev. Reland Morgan and Robert Black will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Roger Wood Masonic Lodge members and Bennett Walker.

Foy Brown
Foy Brown, 64, of Metter died on Sunday, September 5, 2004, at Candler County Hospital after a brief illness. He was a member of Metter Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Edna Brown of Metter; sons, Victor Douglas Brown of Metter and Stephen Foy Brown of Dublin; a brother, Judge Brown of Winton, CA; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Metter Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Beasley and Dr. Elvis Hester officiating. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Thornton, D.L. Bryson, Jimmy Lee Shirah, Rhett Mosley, Riley Johnson, and William “Bill” Collins. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of the church.

Martin Thomas Wildes
Martin Thomas Wildes, 60, of the Hillview community near Claxton died Friday morning, Sept. 3, 2004, at Candler County Hospital in Metter.
Mr. Wildes became a quadriplegic at the age of 17 from a diving accident. For the past 43 years, he has been in the loving care of his parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was the center of the Wildes family home, serving as mentor and counselor to each and every one who cared for him. He was a sports enthusiast, being an avid fan of the Braves, Falcons and Hawks. He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Editha Boyett Wildes, and brother-in-law Benjie Smith.
He is survived by his devoted father and caregiver, Charles E. Wildes; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Farrell and Jan Wildes of Ringgold, Jay and Julia Wildes of the Hillview community, Vann and Marilyn Wildes of Hoschton; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma Wildes, Mary and Jimmy Sapp, all of Statesboro, Carolyn Smith of Reidsville, Martha and Carl Lacy of Conroe, Tx., Faye Kennedy and Kaye Wildes, both of Metter; 17 nieces and nephews and great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Elder Tom Deal officiated. Eulogists were Dianne Mixon and Anson Callaway.
Pallbearers were nephews.

Ellen Culbreth Anderson
Ellen Culbreth Anderson, 74, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Snellville after an extended illness.
The Emanuel County native resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 46 years before moving to Snellville in 2001. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Huddie Culbreth and the wife of the late Clarence Anderson. Her sister, Fannie McCrary also preceded her in death. She was a member of Tried Stone Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
She is survived by a son, Alphonso Anderson of Snellville; a daughter, Linda Hocker of Snellville; three brothers, George Culbreth of Twin City, Jesten Culbreth of St. Petersburg, Fl., and Jesse Patterson of Cocoa, Fl; a sister, Myrtle Warner of Midville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Treemont Temple Baptist Church in Metter, with burial following in Willow Springs Church Cemetery in Twin City. Visitation wll be held one hour before the funeral at the church.
Viewing will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Joseph Parvin (Baba) Williams
Joseph Parvin (Baba) Williams,Sr. 59, of Newark, NJ died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004 at Columbus Hospital in Newark, NJ. The candler County native was the son of hte late General and Marietta Williams. He attended Candler County Training Elementary and High Schools. He was a graduate of Savannah State College. He was employed as a teacher in the Essex County School system and retired as assistant principal.
He is survived by one son, Joseph and daughter-in-law, Millie; a granddaughter, Dayna Williams of Edison, NJ; three sisters, Loree Williams, Thelma Bell of Newark, NJ and Mae Evelyn Williams of Metter; several nieces; one great niece; a nephew; two great-nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 11 a.m. in Orange, NJ at Cotton Funeral Home Chapel, 130 Main St., Orange, NJ 07050.

Clinton Brice McCullough
Clinton Brice McCullough, 22, formerly of Metter, died Oct. 5, 2004, in Orlando, Fl. He lived in Metter for 10 years and attended Metter Elementary School. He was in the plumbing and electrical business, loved playing video games and fishing.
He is survived by his father, Bill McCullough of Metter; his mother, Pat Bherm McCullough of Orlando, Fl; his paternal grandmother, Reba Lou McCullough of Twin City; a best friend, ‘K’ Grove of Cobbtown; several aunts and uncles.
Memorial services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salem Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Mills officiating.

Emma Louise Simpson
Emma Louise ‘Emy Lou’ Bowen Hundrup Simpson died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston, Washington. She was 82.
Born July 23, 1922, to Moses Jackson and Anna Lora Gammage Bowen, Mrs. Simpson was the 17th child born to her father after the death of two previous wives and was the only daughter of Mrs. Bowen.
She grew up in Metter, graduating from high school there in 1939. In February 1940, she entered Grady Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta.
After three years of training and graduating, she entered the Army Nurse Corps and was stationed at Drew Field in Tampa, Fl. She was sent to Bowman Field to the Kentucky School of Air Evacuation. Upon completion of the training, she was sent to the European Theater during World War II in June 1944. She was attached to the 802nd Air Evacuation Squadron and later transferred to the 807th Air Evacuation Squadron which evacuated patients from the front lines to hospitals in Italy and France.
She met and became engaged to Carl J. Hundrup from Pomeroy on the Isle of Capri. After the war ended, they both returned to the States and were married Sept. 22, 1945, in Moultrie.
She and Mr. Hundrup moved to Pomeroy and on to Spokane, where they lived for five years before moving to Lewiston in October 1950. She worked for a time at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Lewiston Orthopaedics. Her husband died in 1971.
She married Carey Simpson of Downsville, La., at Orchards Baptist Church in Lewiston in January 1980. The couple traveled to both of their hometowns to visit family and visited Alaska. She was a member of Orchards Baptist Church for several years, spending a great deal of the time teaching Sunday school. She and her husband helped start a new church, Tammany View Baptist Church, and were members of that church when she died.
Mrs. Simpson had a great sense of humor and enjoyed reading her Bible and listening to gospel music. She also found great joy in her art work with her best friend, Fannie B. Carpenter. Together they did china painting, tole painting and oils.
Mrs. Simpson spent the last year and a half of her life at the Idaho State Veterans Home and thought of it as her home. She received the finest care and attention from all of that staff.
She is survived by her husband, Carey Simpson, at their home in Lewiston; four sons and their wives, Dan and Phyllis Hundrup, Richard and Judy Hundrup, Mike Hundrup and his companion, Hilberta Evans, and David and Mona Hundrup; a step-daughter, Karlene Hundrup McCurry; four stepsons and their wives, Gene and Sheryl Simpson, Van and Joanie Simpson, Mike and Bonnie Simpson, and Joe and Cindy Simpson; 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at Tammany View Baptist Church, with a graveside service following at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the church or the Idaho State Veterans Home, 821, 21st Ave., Lewiston, Washington.
