Dr. Phil L. Russell
Dr. Phil L. Russell, 63, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.
The Laurens County native moved to Tattnall County in 1972. He retired as assistant superintendent for Tattnall County School System in 1995. A member of Collins United Methodist Church, he was an avid fisherman and a gardener. He was preceded in death by his father, O.L. Russell, and his wife, Jacquelyn S. Russell.
He is survived by his wife, Sigrid B. Russell of Collins; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike Russell of Lewisville, Tx., and Jeff and Cheryl Russell of Tampa, Fl.; his mother, Ruby C. Russell of Dublin; a step-son, Jack D. Davis III of Durham, N.C.; a step-daughter and her husband, Evelyn and Billy Willett of Lyons; a brother, Donald Russell of Cadwell; a sister, Ruby Mallory of Dublin; and grandchildren, Kaitlin, Madison, Samuel, Melinda, Jonathan, Shelby, Sydney, Jason and Megan.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Collins United Methodist Church, with burial following at Collins Baptist Church.

Emma Lanier Coleman
Emma Lanier Coleman, 100, of Jefferson died Thursday, December 30, 2004. She was the daughter of the late William Wiley and Polly Holland Lanier. She was married to the late Guy Sentell Coleman for 60 years. She was the last surviving sibling of 14 brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by a son, Guy Edwin Coleman and a daughter, Madgeline Coleman Gardener.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John William and Bess Coleman of Tampa, FL and Donald Walker and Valerie Coleman, of Clarksville; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Cole-man and Robert G. Rankin of Jefferson; five grandchildren and their spouses, Robert Lee and Linda Gardener of Alexander, VA, Ann Gardner and Herbert Puckett of Georgetown, S.C., Gina Coleman and Kevin Rice of Clarksville and Stacy Coleman and Frank Symons of St. Paul, MN and John Hansford Coleman of Baltimore, MD; six great-grandchildren, Leigh Ann Gard-ner, Michele Rice Hightower, Shaun Christopher Rice, Jasmin Breann Rice, Stewart William Symons and Elisabeth Lanier Symons; and two great-great-grandchildren, Aethan Daniel Hightower and Deaon Alexander Hightower.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with Martin Harbeck and Robert Murdoch officiating. Interment was in Grey Hill Cemetery.

Linda Kay Kirkland
Linda Kay Kirkland, age 60, died Thursday, December 30, 2004. The native of Savannah had lived in the Metter area for the past several months. She was of the Baptist faith, loved to listen to music, and worked at Larry’s Restaurant in Savannah for many years.
She is survived by daughter, Tammy Miller, of Cobbtown; a son, Joseph Scott McElveen, of Savannah; sister & brother-in-law, Brenda & Ronald Cardell, of Metter; two brothers & one sister-in-law, Anthony & Margaret Kirkland, of Marietta and Dean Kirkland, of Savannah; and one grandson, Joseph Scott McEl-veen, Jr. of Savannah.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with Dr. Jim Wilson officating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Dean Collins, Charlie Jarriel, Richard Strickland, Danny Cardell, Bert Shackelford, Jeff Hutson, and Gene Powell.

Jimmy Lester Sapp
Jimmy Lester Sapp, age 63, of Metter, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 in Savannah. The native of Evans County lived most of his life in Metter. He was Vice President of Atlantic Insulation & Refractory Co. of Bloomingdale, an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, and was a member of Beards Creek Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Sapp, of Metter; daughter, Tammy Coursey of Metter; son and daughter-in-law, Sandy and Bertie Sapp of Nunez; a brother, Dale Sapp of Claxton; a sister, Barbara Waters of Claxton; grandsons, Casey Dale and Jason Lee Sapp and Darin Ray and Denton Rhett Coursey.
Funeral Services were conducted Friday in the Chapel of Morgan Family Funeral Home. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mack Snipes, J.M. Snipes, Burton Sconyers, Danny Sconyers, Keith Snipes, and Kevin Snipes.

Watson Lamar Samples
Watson Lamar Samples, 65, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The native of Candler County was a Captain in Medical Service Corps of the American Division of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He earned a Masters degree in education from Georgia Southern College. Before moving back to Metter in 1989, he was Vice President and General Manager of Cyprus Emerald Resources in Waynesburg, PA. He was a former Director of Risk Management for Emanuel County Schools and completed his term as Chairman of Candler County Commissioners December 31, 2004. He was currently Administrative Assistant to Superintendent in Treutlen County Schools. He was pastor of Canoochee Baptist Church in Twin City.
He is survived by his wife, Laurita Jarriel Samples; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan Lamar and Holly Samples and David Keith and Cindie Samples, all of Kingsport, TN; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Carol and David Alden of Kingsland; six grandchildren, Seth and Miranda Alden, Hunter and Andrew Samples; and Bailey and Kristin Samples.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Canoochee Baptist Church in Canoochee community near Twin City. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery in Metter. The body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carroll Joseph “Joe” Thompson III
Caroll Joseph “Joe” Thompson III, 26, of Overland Park, KS, formerly of Metter died on Thursday, December 23, 2004.
He is survived by his father Richard Thompson and his wife Sandra, of Blue Springs, MO, a mother Laura Southerland of Mableton; sisters, Donna Brewer of Kennesaw, Krystal Horning of Rich Hill, MO and Patricia Southerland of Mableton; a brother, Jonathan Southerland of Mableton; maternal grandparents Roy Poole of Virginia and Priscilla Hansard of Winder; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Reynolds Sr. of Mableton; paternal grandparents, Carroll and Mary Thompson of Metter; several aunts and uncles and cousins, including Aunt Carol Hendrix of Metter and cousin, Jerri O’Brien of Metter; and a beloved dog, Damian.
Memorial services were held on December 26 at Porter’s Funeral Home in Lenexa, KS with Rev. Steve Dighton officiating. Funeral services were held on December 29, at Roy Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Austel with Rev. Larry Ritch officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.
Joe’s death was celebrated by the gift of life through organ donation.

John Tillman Miles Sr.
John Tillman Miles Sr., 70, died Monday, January 10, 2005 at his home. The native of Candler County had lived most of his life here. He was an Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict and was a sales man and loved to fish. He was predeceased by his parents Jeff and Louise Doyle Miles; a brother, Jimmy Miles; and a daughter, Beverly Williams.
He is survived by a daughter, Michele Holland of Atlanta; a son, John T. Miles Jr. of Statesboro; a sister, Erma Hadden of Metter; a brother, Franklin Miles of Glennville; a son-in-law, Joe Williams; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Morgan Family Funeral Home.

David Parrish
David Parrish, 46, of Charleston, S.C. died Tuesday, January 4, 2005, near his residence. The Candler County native was a member of The Church of God in Christ. He was employed by Cooper River Construction Company in Charleston.
He is survived by one daughter, Davida Parrish of the United States Navy; his mother, Annie Bell Robinson of Metter; two aunts, Beatrice Smith of Metter and Callie Willis of Gainesville; several other relatives and friends.
There will be a graveside service at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Dixon Grove Cemetery near Metter.

Henry Douglas “Doug” Horne Jr.
Henry Douglas “Doug” Horne Jr., 60, of Martinez died Friday, January 7, 2005 at University Hospital. He was a board member of the University Health Care Foundation and served on the Board of Demere Landing Association. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta.
He is survived by his wife, Glynda P. Horne of Martinez; his mother, Myrtle D. Horne of Blue Ridge, GA; a sister, Carole Jean Parker and brother-in-law, Donnie Parker of Duluth; four nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Rodger Murchison and Rev. Jacob Malone officiating. Interment was held at Excelsior Cemetery in Metter.
Pallbearers were Andy Sauls, Al Ramsey, Hal Beaman, Carl Faulk, Mike Dudley and Don McKenzie. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Cason Bruker Sunday School Class, along with Bill Ashby, Dr. Vendie Hooks and Dr. Charles Shafer.

Vesta Calloway Lynn, 85, of Cobbtown died Dec. 31, 2004, in Quincy, Fl.
The native of Tattnall County was a member of Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church and had lived in Quincy for several years.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay Fausel; her brothers, Julius Calloway, Lyndell Calloway and Gary Calloway; and sisters, Betty Charters, Nancy Cox and Ann Green.
Memorial services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek with burial in the church cemetery.

Charlie Franklin “Frankie” Daniels
Charlie Franklin “Frankie” Daniels, 62, of Stillmore died Saturday evening, January 15, 2005. The Emanuel County native lived all of his life in Stillmore, retiring from Twin City Manufacturing after 27 years and was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Vertie Mae Daniels of Stillmore; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Frank Davis of Macon; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Editha “Dot” Wright of Statesboro and Clara and Kyle Beaver of Salisbury, N.C.; step-sons and daughter-in-law, James McNeal and Thomas and Tracy McNeal of Stillmore; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and Ferrell Phillips and Frances and Ubern Wilkes, all of Metter; four grandchildren, Danny, Ashley, Dixie and Clay Roberson; and one great-grandchild, Zackery Roberson.

Mary Lou Bailey, 75, of Metter died on Friday, January 14, 2005 at Candler County Hospital in Metter. A homemaker, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Lee Bailey.
She is survived by her sons, James Lee Bailey of Perry and Marty Ray Bailey of Lawrence-ville; a daughter, Mary Vicki Boone of Midway; sisters, Lola Deal of Savannah, Vennie Ray Halloway of Lavonia, Georgia Jarriel of St. Augustine, FL and Ann McCranie of Metter; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lottie Brown Flanders
Lottie Brown Flanders, 93, died Friday, January 14, 2005, at Emanuel County Nursing Home. The Candler Co. native and lifelong resident was a homemaker and worked in the Candler County Schools Food Services. She was a member of Lake Primitive Baptist Church and the widow of Otis Lee Flanders.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy L. and Betty Flanders of Swainsboro; a brother, J.B. Brown of Pt. Wentworth; a sister, Susie Hale of Metter; four grandchildren, Jim Flanders, Kay Wilson, Patricia Brinson and Patrick Cooke; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Elder Randy Waters officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.
