Corine Buie Miles Allen
Corine Buie Miles Allen, 85, died Thursday morning, January 13, 2005.
The native of Metter lived all of her life in Candler County. She was a member of Lake Primitive Baptist Church and worked many years in the lunchrooms of Metter Grammar and High Schools, an Avon representative and a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Faye Cameron, a son, Arthur Miles, and a sister, Omie Lee Leverett, all of Metter; granddaughters, Brenda McGee and Dian Fox; and great-grandchildren, Starr Cameron and Shaun and J.T. Tapley.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial following in Lake Cemetery. Elder Randy Waters officiated.
Pallbearers were Danny Lee, Jerry Lanier, Mike Purvis, Eddie Kemp, Mickey Lanier and Mike McGee.

John Lee Kennedy
John Lee Kennedy, 64, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Metter Nursing Home. The son of the late John Lee Kennedy and Eloise Bird Kennedy, he moved to Metter 18 years ago from Hyattsville, MD. He was a retired accountant for Safeway Foods and Sunshine Bakery. Being a very active member of Metter Kiwanis Club, he served in all local offices of the club, the Board of Directors and as District Governor. He was a member and teacher of the Gideon Sunday School class and the Metter First Baptist Church. He was a historian, a genealogist, and an avid reader who loved gospel and country music.
He is survived by first cousins, William Kennedy of Virginia Beach, VA, Jack Graybill of Columbia, Madge Bird of Metter; and other cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Fred Pifer officiating. Burial was in the Primitive Grove cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jesse Tyler, Tim Redding, Randall Baggett, Ray Craft, Jake Lovett and Dwayne Tucker. Honorary pallbearers were members of Metter Kiwanis Club.

Jesus Antonio Morales
Jesus Antonio Morales, infant son of Jesus Hernandez and Maria Margarita Morales, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005.
In addition to his parents, Jesus is also survived by his sisters, Maria Morales and Jennifer Hernandez, and his maternal grandparents, Maria Soto and Juan Antonio Morales.
Funeral mass was conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Morgan Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Virginia Wilkerson Mincey
Virginia Wilkerson Mincey, 51, of Metter died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, after an extended illness. She was born in Candler County to Beola Henry Wilkerson and Emmit Wilkerson Sr. After graduating from Metter High School in 1972, she attended Savannah Vocational Institute. She was a member of Sams Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her mother and one brother, Claude Wilkerson.
Survivors include three children, Marcus, Disheta and Ricky Mincey, all of Metter; her father, Emmit Wilkerson Sr. of Metter; six sisters, Evangelist Susie Collins and Vonyer of Metter; Nell and Marion Hart of Savannah, Maggie Wilkerson, April Wilkerson and Charlene Wilker-son, all of Atlanta, Sherry and George Parr of Statesboro; four brothers, Edward Wilkerson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Ray Wilkerson and Emmit Wilkerson Jr., both of Metter, and Wallace and Uneta Wilkerson of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Jewel Wilkerson of Savannah; three grandchildren; four aunts and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Sams Creek Baptist Church in Metter with burial in Dixon Grove Cemetery.

Louis ‘Luke’ Bird
Louis “Luke” Bird, 76, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Savannah.
He was born in Gastonia N.C. and lived all of his life in Candler County. He was a farmer and carpenter and had worked for Colon Taylor of Taylor & Bird for over 30 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper and was a great “Pa Bird” granddaddy.
He is survived by his wife, Madge Prince Bird of Metter; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Janice Prince of Tifton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Tommy Haywood of Tifton; a brother, J. Dwain Bird of Valley, Al.; sisters, Myrtle Olive of Orlando, Edna Norton of Valdosta, and Margaret Harris of Miami; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Lynn Bird.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Morgan Family Funeral Home with burial in the Cool Spring Cemetery.

Frank Moffitt
Frank Moffitt, 94, of Savannah, formerly of Metter, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. The Screven County native lived most of his life in Candler County. He was a member of Sams Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Evelyn Moffitt of Savannah, Earl and Grace Williams of Philadelphia, PA; daughter-in-law, Virginia Moffitt of Metter and a son-in-law, Morris Elliott of Savannah; several nieces and nephews, including Willie Moffit, Ozzie Moffitt and Annie Lee Gabriel, all of Philadelphia, PA and Charles Moffitt of New York, NY; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday at Sams Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Thomas Williams Sr.
Thomas Williams Sr., 49, of Metter died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. A former employee of Wallace Computer Service Metter, he was a member of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in Metter.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Thomas Williams; two sons, Thomas Williams Jr. and Kevin Williams; a daughter, Shenika Williams; a step-son, Tarvis Thomas, all of Metter; his mother, Ola Mae Woods of Metter; his step-father, Cecil Woods of Metter; a brother, Robert Williams of Metter; a sister, Vallie Lee Williams of Stillmore; six brothers-in-law, Willie Butler of Metter, O.C. Thomas Jr., Robert Thomas and Collis Thomas of Miami, Fl., Joe David Conyers Sr. of Tampa, Fl., Connie Pough Sr. of Collins; seven sisters-in-law, Virginia Williams of Metter, Jessie Ruth Selvage of Detroit, Precious Conyers of Tampa, Fl., Mary Thomas and Henrietta Carter of Miami, Fl., Sherrie Pough of Collins and Brenda Thomas of Metter; two uncles, Willie Carlton of Atlanta and Johnny Williams of Stillmore; two aunts, Josephine Byrd of Stillmore and Mae Frances Carlton of Metter; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church in Metter. Burial will follow at Stillmore City Cemetery in Emanuel County.

Shirley Rock Coney
Shirley Rock Coney, 51, of Metter died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Metter after an extended illness.
She was a native of Candler County and graduated in 1972 from Metter High School. After graduation, she spent a year in the Job Corps. She was a member of Treemont Temple Missionary Baptist Church and worked as a certified nursing assistant and caregiver for the elderly.
She is survived by her husband, James Ira Coney of Metter; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kalambia and David McQuater and Vernetta Nicole Rock, all of Metter; her mother, Jannie Lou Davis of Metter; a sister, Carolyn Mincey of Statesboro; four grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Treemont Temple Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Lakeside First Baptist Cemetery.

Henry Williams
Henry Williams, 88, of Register died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County. For over 50 years, he served on the deacon board of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Register. He was a retired farmer and an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife, Cora Lee Williams of Register; a son, Hubert Williams of Orlando, Fl.; two daughters, Virlie Bradley of Brunswick and Sarah Hobbs of Orlando, Fl.; three step-sons, Freddie Grant of Statesboro, Clinton Grant and Willie Joe Grant, both of Register; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Register. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Larry Gene Williams
Larry Gene Williams, 66, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005. The Candler Co. native lived several years in Macon, working at Armstrong Corp. for 20 years as an Industrial Electrician. He then returned back to Candler Co., was a farmer, truck driver, and served eight years in the Air National Guard. He was of the Baptist faith and a past young farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Williams of Metter; a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Dr. Glenn Harnett of Savannah; mother-in-law, Frances Lowery of Metter; and several cousins.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday at Morgan Family Funeral Home. Burial was in Upper Lotts Creek Cemetery.

Gary Barnard
Gary Barnard, 57, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at his residence. The Candler County native had worked for 30 years in law enforcement, the last eight years serving as chief deputy for the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, the Georgia Sheriff’s Association and a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Church. He was very dedicated to his family and his work. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Paul Barnard.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Connie A. Barnard of Cobbtown; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rodney Todd of Reidsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jennifer Barnard of Reidsville; his mother, Maude H. Barnard of Reidsville; a sister, Janice Medors of Reynoldsburg, OH; eight brothers, David Barnard, Ricky Barnard, Timmy Barnard, Brad Barnard and Kevin Barnard, all of Reidsville, Bobby Barnard of Daisy, Wayne Barnard of Metter, and Stanley Barnard of Collins; five grandchildren, Ashley Glisson, Kristen Boyett, Kaleb Boyett, Kayleigh Barnard, and Logan Barnard; one great-grandchild, Trenton Glisson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at Twin Oaks Baptist Church with Rev. Jerald Dorr and Rev. Ernest Gordy officiating. Burial was in Cedar Creek Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jim Padgett, Ronnie Todd, Ottis (Pop) Anderson; Kyle Sapp; James (Buddy) Collins; Ken Rogers; Randy Sykora; and Kenneth Young-blood. Honorary pallbearers were all Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department employees, reserve deputies and law enforcement officers.

Carlton R. Johnson
Carlton R. Johnson, 82, of Brunswick died Friday, February 4, 2005, in the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick. He was a native of Uvalda and had been a resident of Glynn County for the past 58 years. He was a member of the Local Carpenter Union #865 and loved fishing.
He is survived by his wife Marie McSwain Johnson of Brunswick; two daughters, Lynnette Carnes and Mary J. Long, both of Brunswick; two brothers, Tommy Hollis Johnson of Metter and Eddie Johnson of Atlanta; three sisters, Eula White and Ilena Graham, both of Snellville and Blanche Ingle of Atlanta; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Robert Flippo and Eric Hahn officiating. Burial was in Thain Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Trotter, T.J. Long, Donald McSwain, Cecil Wise, Stan Trotter, Neil McSwain, Joe Robinson, and Curt Holt. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Lee, Inman White, Harrell Stephens, W.H. Thain, Mendes Thain, Bill Achi, Bon Baker, Paul Thain, Fred Thain and Luis Paucar.
