Herbert “Bogart” Carswell
Herbert “Bogart” Carswell, 35, of Garfield died Thursday, March 31, 2005. He was a native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County and attended the public schools of Emanuel County. He was a member of Holy Zion Holiness Church in Metter.
He is survived by two children, Antonio Tarver of Twin City and Kelvin Brown of Swainsboro; his mother and stepfather, Carrie Carswell of Garfield and Willie James Ellis of Metter; his father and stepmother, Willie and Margaret Bynes of Twin City; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Larry and Bessie Carswell of Louisville, Gregory Carswell of Garfield and Willie Bynes Jr. of Register; two sisters, Mary Ann Bynes of Statesboro and Almeta Mainer of Miami, FL; grandparents, J.W. and Anna Ellis of Metter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Holy Zion Holiness Church in Metter with burial to follow in Kirkland Cemetery in Summertown.

Louie Mercer
Louie Mercer, 73, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer and timber producer. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Shellman Bluff Fishing and Hunting Club. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and music. His favorite past time was riding “Basket,” his bassett hound in the golf cart and visiting with his many friends in Cobbtown.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gloria Collins Mercer of Cobbtown; son, Guy M. Mercer and Tina of Cobbtown; two daughters, Louisa M. and Jimmy Hensley of Metter and Kim M. and Tim Vacula of Milledgeville; two sisters, Dorothy Rhoden and Ruth Funderburk, both of Cobbtown; four grandchildren, J.B. Hensley, John Mitchell Hensley, Trey Sears and Marna Brooks.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in Sunlight Cemetery. Rev. Doug Rainwater and Rev. Andy Haman will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 6-9 p.m. in the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be George Powell, Randy Brown, Al Williams, Jimmy Joiner, Billy Freeman, Danny Humphrey, Stevie Sewell and Jerell Powell.
Remembrances can be made to the charity of your choice.
‘Buddy’ Olliff
William Lewis “Buddy” Olliff, age 57, died Thursday evening, April 7, 2005.
The Candler County native lived most of his life in the Metter and Ollifftown areas and was a member of New Beulah United Methodist Church. He worked for over 25 years in the logging industry and on his farm with the cows. He loved to work in his garden, fish, watch his grandsons race motorcycles, and be a friend to everyone. He will be sadly missed by his tool-box companion, Rider.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lee Olliff, of Metter; sons and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Melissa Olliff and Adam Olliff, all of Metter; grandchildren, Zach Olliff, Molly and Chase Sconyers, all of Metter; his mother, Sybol Olliff Toole of Metter; sister and brother-in-law: Martha and Don Farrow of Midville; several nieces and nephews; Adam’s special friend Michelle Price and her children, Brittany and Bailey.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial in the Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Gordon D. Dukes Jr. and Elder Tommy Rountree officiated.
Pallbearers were Lee Durden, Jeff Durden, Tommy Hunt, Clint Colley, Brinson Lanier, Ike Webb, Bill Mercer, Ronnie Ponder, Dean Monroe, Blake Monroe and Troy Oglesby.
Honorary pallbearers were Edenfield’s Morning Coffee Bunch and the Metter High School Class of 1966.

Effie Cannady Collins
Effie Cannady Collins, 99, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Metter Nursing Home. She was born in Emanuel County and has lived all of her life in Candler County. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church. In earlier years, she was a member of the Aline Demonstration Club, the Keenagers and an avid gardener. Her greatest pleasure was in doing things for others. She was the widow of Brooks Collins.
She is survived by a son, Jerry B. and Gail Collins of Metter; daughters, Jo Nell McKee of Belleville, IL and Faye C. and Vaughan Lanier of Cobbtown; eight grandchildren, Debi Texier, Joe Watson, Deidra Miles, Lance Lanier, Will Lanier, Brian Collins, Cathy Beggs, and Wes Collins; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Elder Gary Johnson and Rev. Andy Haman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Aline. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church and Russell Mercer.

Madge Jones Trapnell
Madge Jones Trapnell, 80, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, in Chattanooga, TN. The Candler Co. native lived most of her life in Metter before moving to the Hickory Valley Retirement Community in Chattanooga, TN in 2003. She was a member of the Metter First Baptist Church, the Naomi Sunday School Class, Order of the Eastern Star, and The Metter Garden Club. The graduate of Georgia State College for Women worked at C&S Bank in Atlanta as a stenographer. She served as the secretary of Metter First Baptist Church for many years and as secretary at Hooks Mortuary. She had a love of flowers and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carson Jones and Patriel Jones Lanier, her husband of 52 years, Robert L. Trapnell, Sr., a sister, Katrina Mills, and a granddaughter, Kim Trapnell.
Survivors are sons and daughters-in-law, Robert L. “Bob” Trapnell, Jr. and Marilyn, of Cape Canaveral, FL and Dwight Kent Trapnell and Jayne, of Ringgold, GA; sisters, May J. Hooks of Metter and Dr. Nancy J. Lanier of St. Simon’s Island; grandchildren, Robert L. “Bo” Trapnell, III of Winter Springs, FL and Samuel Preston Trapnell, of Ringgold, Ga.
Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (today) at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial in the Lake Cemetery.

Lynn F. Wiseman Bankey
Lynn F. Wiseman Bankey, 61, of Metter, formerly of Portage, OH died on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at Candler County Hospital.
She bravely battled both luekemia and lung cancer. She was employed at Candler County Hospital in Metter as a registered nurse. A member of Cloverdale Methodist Church in Bowling Green, OH, she worked for 25 years at Wood County Hospital and five years at Blakely Care Center in North Baltimore, OH and five years at Wood County Nursing Home, also in Bowling Green, OH. While working fulltime as an LPN and mother, Lynn earned a degree in nursing from Ownes Technical College in Findley, OH.
One of Lynn’s favorite things to do was fishing with her husband and special dog, Kookie. She had many interests, such as bingo, garage sales, auctions and crafts. She was a collector of lighthouses, porcelain dolls, glass shoes and many other unique pieces.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard C. Bankey of Metter; a son and daughter-inlaw, Specialist Andrew and Kim Bankey of Sandersville; daughters, Richelle Bankey and special friend Donny Ayers of North Baltimore, OH, Lynda Bankey and special friend Jim Luman of Metter; a step-daughter and husband, Kari and Marc Findley of North Baltimore, OH; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Carl Solarik of Cygnet, OH; eleven grandchildren and other loving family members.
A memorial service was held on Thursday in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Pifer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Clara Allen Y. Brannen
Clara Allen Y. Brannen, 81, died Thursday at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness. The Bulloch county native has lived in this county most of her life. She was a member of the Statesboro First Bpatist Church where she was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of Georgia Teacher’s College which is now Georgia Southern University. She was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Youngblood.
Survivors include her husband, Paul W. Brannen of Statesboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jim Roberson of Vidalia; one son and daughter-inlaw, Don C. and Karen Youngblood; two step-sons, Wayne P. Brannen and Douglas Brannen, both of Statesboro; one sisters, Mary A. Brown of Millen; one brother, Paul W. Allen; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at First Baptist Church of Statesboro with Rev. John Waters officiating. Burial was in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Faith Sunday School Class and Myrtice Akins.

Alice McCullough
Alice McCullough, 66, of Metter died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. She was a homemaker and a member of Metter Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Eva Pete Tucker; two brothers, Bobby Tucker and Lawrence Tucker; and a sister, Shirley Fail.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Ray McCullough of Metter; sons, Mickey Causey and Jerry Causey, both of Baxley; daughters, Donna Vaughn of Baxley, Mary Ann Sheppard of Kingsport, TN, Loretta Mosley of Bluff City, TN and Brenda Murphy of Charleston, S.C.; brothers, Edward Tucker of Huntsville, TX and Eston Tucker of Twin City; sisters, Minnie Coursey, Eva Mae Sparks, Naomi Googe and Christine Tucker, all of Metter, Mary Sparks of Millen, Alma Meyers of Brunswick; ten grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.
Pallbearers were Carl Givens, Jason Cobb, Josh Champion, Alan Cobb, Michael Rushton and James Googe.
Funeral services were held on Saturday in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny Beasley officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.

Gladys Louise Brake Denning
Gladys Louise Brake Denning, 68, a resident of Metter and a former resident of Buckhannon, WV passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 1, 2005. She was born February 27, 1937 in Rock Cave, WV, the daughter of Marietta Marie Wimer Brake of Buckhannon, WV and the late Frank Edgar Brake.
Gladys graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the class of 1955. She was a former Deputy Sheriff of Upshur County, WV. She was owner of the Colony Dress Shop in Buckhannon, WV and owned the Coach N’ Four Restaurant in Elkins, WV. She was the former dispatcher for Sheriff Homer Bell in Metter and former manager of the Huddle House in Metter. She was currently employed as a receptionist at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and held the position of secretary for the VFW. She was a board member of the Friends of the Library and a member of the Historical Society in Metter. She was also a member of the NRA and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues. She was a member of the Four Musketeers card club.
She is survived by her two sons, Daniel Ray Olds Jr. from her marriage to Daniel Ray Olds, currently of Stevensville, MD and Bradley Arthur Denning, from her marriage to the late Woodrow Marshall Denning.
Also surviving are her two grandchildren, Tasha Marie Olds and Kendyl Lane Olds, who reside with their parents, Daniel and Tracy Olds of Woodlands, TX.
She will be mourned by her constant companion, Jerrell Daughtry and his family of Metter.
A memorial services was held at Wood Funeral Home in Metter on Wednesday, May 4.

Laura Rogers Collins
Laura Rogers Collins, 91, died Saturday at her home. The Evans County native had lived in Metter since 1995, moving from the Hillview community. She was a homemaker and loved to crochet for her family. She was a member of the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church and attended the Metter Primitive Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School class. She was the widow of Bertie Collins.
Mrs. Collins is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Jane “Janie” and Ronnie Sikes of Metter; a step-son and daughters-in-law, J.H. and Betty Collins of Lyons and Modera Collins of Claxton; step-daughters and son-in-law, Lorie and Jeff Anderson, Bertha Shuman and Adell Sapp, all of Claxton; a sister, Henrietta Thrift of Metter; 14 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Elder Tom Deal officiated.
Grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were ladies of the Fidelis Sunday School class.
