Georgia, U.S., Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978

Georgia Bird Rogers
Georgia Bird Rogers, 61, died Feb. 28, 2005, at White River Junction, Vt. She was the daughter of the late George Rogers and Jewell Bird Rogers.
She was reared in Atlanta and was a child with special needs. She has lived in Vermont the last several years since her parents’ death.
She is survived by several first cousins, including George M. Bird of Metter, Helen Strickland of Lakeland, Albert Lanier of California and Martha Rhodes of Mississippi.
Cremain burial was held at Lake Cemetery on Friday, March 18, 2005.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Flora L. Lanier
Flora L. Lanier, 91, died Thursday, March 17, 2005.
The native of Candler County lived all of her life here and was a member of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church. She attended Georgia Southern, where she received a B.S. degree, Master’s degree and sixth year in elementary education.
She was a member of the Candler County Retired Educators Association, having taught in the Candler County School System for 30 years. She was a charter member of the Candler County Daughters of the American Revolution, and served on the Candler County Library Board from 1950-1988. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clyde Lanier, Sr.
She is survived by a son, James Clyde Lanier Jr., and a daughter-in-law, Louise Bird Lanier; grandchildren, James C. Lanier, III and wife Montell Lanier of Metter, Johnny and Lisa Lanier of Vidalia, Janie and Len McCook of Statesboro, and Jill and Richard Bowen of Statesboro; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, James R. and Frances Lanier, of Metter.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Elder Sam Bowen, Elder Charles Garrett and Rev. Grady Wilson officiated.
Pallbearers were Landon Lanier, Spencer Lanier, Josh McCook, Keith Lanier, Jim Lanier and Stephen UpDeGraff.
Honorary pallbearers were male members of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church, Brock and Johnathon Bowen and Logan Hall.

Virgil Ray Hadden
Virgil Ray Hadden, 80, died Friday, March 18, 2005.
The Emanuel County native lived in the Metter area for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Metter VFW Post # 5893. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and loved to tinker and restore old farm equipment.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bird Hadden; sons, Virgil E. Hadden of Naples, Fl., and Ray Hadden of Rincon; daughters, Christine Dressler of Rincon, Linda Crosby and Judy Herndon, both of Metter; a brother, Henry A. Hadden of Cartersville; and a sister, Marilyn B. Warren of Pooler; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial following in the Lake Cemetery. Rev. Charles Beasley officiated.
Pallbearers were John Hammond, Steven Oglesby, Jessie Collins, Perry A. Hill, Chuck Herndon and Evan Crosby.
Morgan Family Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Mosley
Dorothy Mosley, 79, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at the Liberty Regional Medical Center. She was a resident at Woodlands Health and Rehabilitation Center in Midway. She was a native of Candler County and she lived in Candler and Emanuel Counties for many years. She was married to Robert Mosley who preceded her in death.
Survivors include one aunt, Louise Tyson of Elizabethtown, N.C.; one uncle, George Harrison of Wilmington, DE; several cousins, including Melvie Boyd of Metter and Veronica Cook of Savannah.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Parrish Grove Church Cemetery.

Geraldine Hawkins
Geraldine Hawkins, 62, of Metter died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Candler County native was the daughter of the late Fess and Levada Byrd. She attended the public schools of Candler County and was a member of Mercer Grove Missionary Baptist Church. For more than 35 years she resided in Philadelphia, PA and was employed by the Pennsylvania Hospital for 33 years. After retiring in 2004, she relocated to Metter. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Roman Byrd.
Survivors include one son, Denver Ray Byrd of Metter; one daughter, Jacqueline Frazier of Metter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Estella Byrd of Stockbridge, Dan Byrd of Metter and Francis Byrd of Alexandria, VA; one granddaughter, Patrice Harris of Washington, D.C.; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held on Monday at Treemont Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Metter. Burial was in Mercer Grove Church Cemetery.
Whitaker Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Martha N. Stanley
Martha N. Stanley, 64, of Metter died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at her home under hospice care.
The Bibb County native had lived here for the past 20 years. She was a former employee of Southern Manor Retirement Inn for many years and was a member of Thomaston Road Baptist Church. She made beautiful roses with old ribbons and loved people.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Stanley of Metter; a step-daughter, Lisa Stanley of Garden City; two brothers, Larry Newberry and Johnny Newberry, both of Macon; four sisters, including a twin sister, Margaret Tucker of Macon, Viola Montgomery of Savannah, Reba Trotter of Metter and Lillie Mae Davidson of Bon Aqua, Tn.; a grandchild, Condy Lynn Stanley; and a great-grandchild, Faith Victoria Stanley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial to follow in Stanley Family Cemetery.

John Thomas Tucker Sr.
John Thomas Tucker Sr., 75, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at his home in Attalla, Al.
The long-time resident of Gadsden and Yellow Creek, Al., also resided in Metter for awhile. He was a long-time businessman with Allstate Construction Co. He was a Mason for over 50 years and was a member of the Attalla Masonic Lodge 383, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and Omar Shrine Temple in South Carolina. He was an honorary member of Zamora Shrine Temple and the Gadsden Shrine Club. A former member of Metter First Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Bea Tucker, in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Betty A. McCorkle Tucker of Metter; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John T. Tucker Jr., Martha Tucker and Don Tucker, all of Gadsden; a step-son and wife, Stacy and Michelle McCorkle of Atlanta; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Linda and Bob Bolduc of Metter, Bob and Margie Tucker of Carrollton, Betty and Paul Mongeon of Shrewsburg, Ma., Dwayne and Bobbie Tucker of Metter and Lonnie and Martha Tucker of Bellville; two grandchildren and spouses, Capt. John T. Tucker III and wife Courtney Tucker of Meridian, Miss., and Jason E. Tucker of Gadsden; and two great-grandchildren, Chandler and Chase Tucker of Meridian.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Debbie and Mark Winn and their entire family for their loving devotion and care. Also, special thanks to staff and management of Southern Health Hospice for their fine care.
Graveside funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Rainbow Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gregg Tucker, Kyle Tucker, Brenson Elliott, Robert Brown, J. T. Tucker and Jason Tucker. Honorary pallbearers were Ron Patrick and Johnny Stevens.
Remembrances can be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Burned and Crippled Children.

Wylan Yvonne Tarver Nesmith
Wylan Yvonne Tarver Nesmith, 74, formerly of Apopka, FL and a resident of the Campbellsville Pike in the Southport Community died Monday, May 2, 2005 at Maury Regional Hospital.
The Metter native was the duaghter of the late Troupe and Pearl Hodges Tarver and was the widow of James Edward Nesmith, who died in 1997. She was a homemaker and former employee of Fernwood Nurseries in Zellwood, FL. She was a member of the Baptist Church and loved fishing. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stevie Wedge and a brother, James Tarver.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Sandy Nesmith of Sorrento, FL; eight daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Kicklighter of Collins; Liz Wedge, Darlene Hughes, Linda and Bob Darnell, all of Apopka, FL, Teresa Chalker of Clermont, FL, Denise Baldree of Gainesville, FL, Tammy Evans of Sorrento, FL and Deborah and Sonny LaFave of Culleoka, TN; 26 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Thursday, at Rosemary Cemetery with Rev. Lawrence Jarriel officiating.
Wood Funeral Home was in charge of out-of-state arrangements.

Anne Youmans Franklin
Anne Youmans Franklin, 77, died May 8, 2005, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Candler County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. K. Solomon Youmans. She graduated from Brenau Academy and then attended Queens College. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota Honorary Musical Fraternity.
She was a member of the Archibald Bulloch Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, St. Phillips Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists and the Civic Garden Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro, where she was a member of the Morning Circle and had served as the children’s choir director.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gustave Franklin Jr., and her son, Paul Gustave Franklin III.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Anne Franklin of Statesboro, and two sisters-in-law, Annette MacLeod of Lumberton, N.C., and Barbara Brannen of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at Statesboro First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. John Bressler officiating. Burial followed in Eastside Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brooks Sorrier III, Abe Glover, Bret Allen, Maurice McDowell, Virgil Harville, Dave Olson and Jack Slaton.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Friends may sign the online register book at www.joineranderson.com.

Lois Spitzer
Lois Mathis Edenfield Spitzer, age 79, died Sunday morning, May 15, 2005.
The Johnson County native moved to Metter in 1985 from Miami, Fl. She was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church and the Golden Agers Sunday School Class.
She was predeceased by her parents, Willie and Katie Mathis, her husband, Edward Spitzer, a brother, Donnie Mathis and a son, Cecil Edenfield.
She is survived by a son, Joe Edenfield of Rushville, IN; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Jim Busch of Louisville, KY, and Wanda and Frank Wood of New Castle, IN; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Jackie Mathis of Rayville, LA, and Hershel and Margie Mathis of Ocala, FL; sisters and a brother-in-law, Clara Hackle of Metter and Katie and Jack Hardiman of Metter; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday (today) at 10 a.m. at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial in the Sardis Cemetery near Swainsboro. Dr. Jim Wilson and Rev. Frank Wood will officiate.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Cedar Street Baptist Church.
Morgan Family Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Domenick Crocitto
Domenick Crocitto, age 67, of Hilton Head, SC, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, after a sudden illness.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Crocitto of Hilton Head.
A memorial service will be held in Douglasville at Whitley Garner/Rose Haven Funeral Home.
