Avanell Crooms
Avanell Crooms, 88, of Metter passed away Friday, May 20, 2005, at Candler County Hospital.
Born in Emanuel County, she lived most of her life in Candler County. She was retired from the Candler County School System and was a member of Metter Church of God.
She is survived by a son, William Edward Crooms of Savannah; a daughter, Betty Carroll of Metter; a brother, Charles Moore of Lodi, California; two sisters, Theo Able and Lois Grizzard, both of Savannah; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Metter Church of God with the Rev. Nathan Smith and the Rev. Johnny Beasley officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Aline.
Pallbearers were Vinson Meeks, Billy Meeks, Buddy Meeks, Bobby Rigdon, James Crooms, Wayne Turner and Randy Crooms. Honorary pallbearers were men of the church.

Clifford Lewis
Clifford Lewis, 67, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Pulaski Nursing Home. He was born in Allegheny County, Pa., the son of John P. Lewis and Ellen Elizabeth Maskew Lewis. He was a farmer.
He is survived by a brother, John Lewis of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

John R. Serna
John R. Serna, 81, of Metter died May 18, 2005, after a sudden illness.
He served in the United States Air Force in World War II and did 26 missions. He was a missile fireman for Pan Am.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, both in Georgia and Florida, and was a member of the VFW Post 5893.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Serna of Metter; sons, John Serna of Comfrey, Mn., and Jerry Serna of Malabar, Fl.; a daughter, Sharon Vickers of Metter; a sister, Rosie Gasperini of Malabar, Fl.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Linton Edwin Warren
Linton Edwin Warren, 91, passed away Monday, May 23, 2005, at Candler Hospital.
He was born in Pulaski on August 27, 1913, son of the late Wilson and Janie Bowen Warren. He lived most of his life in Savannah and retired, after 30 years, from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (now CSX). He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ancient Landmark Lodge #231, F&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Alee Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Vandivere Warren of Savannah; two daughters and son-in-law, Lynne Warren Sieg of Savannah and Suzanne and Glover Waters of Savannah; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Vandivere and Carolyn Corbitt Warren of Pinehurst, NC; five grandchildren, Glover Waters Jr. (Sarah), Stephanie Glisson Burnett (Copie), Leslie Waters Gibson (Brad), Jennifer Warren Bowman (Lee) and Gregory Vandivere Warren; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Warren of Metter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Thursday in the chapel at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Remembrances can be made to The Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital, 2100 North Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, S.C. 27609.

Lonnie Cecil Brantley
Lonnie Cecil Brantley, 94, of Savannah died on Friday, June 10, 2005 at his home. Born in Candler County, he lived most of his life in Savannah. He was retired from Artley Construction Company and was a lifetime member of the Carpenters Local 256. He was a member of Faith Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mary Louella Lanier Brantley.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Durward L. and Agnes C. Brantley of Savannah; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jeffery L. and Kim P. Brantley, Brad L. and Jodi Brantley, Bonnie B. and Chris Weber; three great-grandchildren, April Brantley, Mary Kathryn Brantley and Reese Weber.
Funeral services were held on Sunday in the Chapel of Wood Funeral Home. Burial was in Rosemary Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jeff Brantley, Brad Brantley, Chris Weber, Ray Kirkland, Homer Lewis Lanier and Brinson Lanier.

William Lanier "Bill" Adams Sr.
William Lanier “Bill” Adams Sr., 77, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Macon, MS and the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Adams and the late Leila Irene Cotton Adams.
He was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He was a member of the Statesboro First United Methodist Church and the Dan Williams Sunday School Class. He retired as Vice President of Cal-Maine Foods and he also worked in Mississippi with the extension service and the insurance business. He served as an officer in various state and national agribusiness and civic oganizations. He was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Adams, a brother Charles Edward Lindley, his grandson James Adams Cromley, and his mother-in-law, Frances Dunlap Barnett.
Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Mary Isabelle Barnett Adams of Statesboro; one son and daughter-in-law, William Lanier Adams Jr. and Elizabeth Wrenn Adams of Plano, TX; three daughters and a son-in-law, Ann Adams Cromley and her husband, Lee Cromley of Brooklet, Mary Elizabeth Adams and Grace Adams, both of Statesboro; grandchildren, Jennifer Adams, Frances Adams, Meg Adams, Mary Catherine Cromley, Mollie Cromley, and John Cromley Jr.; one sister, Martha Lindley Hightower of Macon, MS; two sisters-in-law, Nyleen Barnett Bell of Monroe, LA and Nancy Lindley of Starkville, MS; one niece, Lynn Miller of Macon, MS; two nephews, Charlie Lindley of Carrollton and Bill Lindley of Alpharetta.
Funeral services were held on Friday at Statesboro First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Morgan officiating. Burial was in Brooklet City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tal Calloway, Charlie Christmas, Charley Cromley, Vann Downs, Joe McGlammery, Bill Moore, Tom Paul, and Jerry Rushing.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Snooky’s Coffee Club and the Dan Williams Sunday School class, and Dr. Paul Whitlock and Clark Deloach.

Jimmie Bragg
Jimmie Bragg, 68, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at Candler County Hospital. The Jenkins County native moved to Pulaski four years ago from Kite. He was a dairyman at W.R. Roberts Dairy, Pearce Dairy and George Mac Reynolds Dairy. He was a member of the Green Fork Baptist Church near Millen.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Parker Bragg of Pulaski; brothers, Emerson Bragg of Millen and Bill Bragg of El Paso, TX; and a foster sister, Edna Williams of Millen.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Green Fork Baptist Church Cemetery near Millen.

Eleene Collins Powell
Eleene Collins Powell, 83, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at Metter Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a homemaker and a beautician. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Collins Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Powell, and a daughter, Sally Powell.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rufus and Barbara Powell of Bainbridge, Don and Debbie Powell of Collins; two daughters and a son-in-law, Nina “Nicky” Phillips, Elyce and Ralph Robinson, all of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Vernon Collins of Jacksonville, FL and Rev. Ray Collins of McDonough; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral servies will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in Cedar Creek Cemetery. Rev. Tab Smith, Rev. Sterling Bargeron and Rev. Ralph Robinson III will officiate.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Deacons of the Collins Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Robert Donald “Duck” Altman
Robert Donald “Duck” Altman II, 23, died Wednesday morning, May 25, 2005 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He lived most of his life in Camden County and was a member of Woodbine Missionary Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, very artistic, having a love of drawing and collected dream catchers and wolf collectibles. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Kim Altman.
Survivors include his mother, Katherine Warren Jackson and her fiancé, Colt Perry, both of Metter, a sister and brother-in-law, Annie Jackson and Marty Williams of Sylvania; his paternal grandmother, Eugenia D. Townsend of Woodbine; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Henry Brantley Youmans
Henry Brantley Youmans, 73, died Sunday, June 5, 2005 at his home. The Candler County Native graduated from UGA in 1957. He was employed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Hartwell, GA. He became an engineer for NASA and was instrumental in the development of the space program at Kennedy Space Center. He lived in Merritt Island, FL from 1967 until 1997 when he moved back to Metter after retiring. He loved fishing and hunting with his family and friends, and grilling out. He enjoyed talking about space exploration and was a Braves fan. As Buddy Kissiah, a longtime friend from NASA said, “He was a country boy at heart.”
Survivors include his wife, Joanne J. Youmans of Metter, sons and daughters-in-law, David and Tamme Youmans of Sylva, N.C. and John and Michele Youmans of Acworth; a brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Maria Youmans of Laurens, S.C.; grandchildren, Jordan, Ian, Devan, Lynsey, Stephanie, Michael and Brandon Youmans.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Morgan Family Funeral Home.

Roy Hooks
Roy Hooks, 77, of Warner Robins passed away on Friday, June 24, 2005 at his home. He was born in Metter. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and retired as a Radar Technician from Robins Air Force Base. He also served in the United States Army. His wife, Audrey L. Hooks; a daughter, Regina Greene; and parents, Julius and Gertrude Hooks, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Roy Michael and Joni Hooks of Macon; daughters, Janice Braddy of Gaines-ville, FL and Denise O’Hara of Cochran; grandchildren, Brian Hooks of St. Mary’s, Lindsay Hooks of Valdosta, Matthew Braddy of Gainesville, FL, Kristen Braddy of Gainesville, FL, Brandon Hodges of Cochran; and a sister, Ruth Williams of Gray.
Funeral services were held on Monday in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with entombment at Magnolia Park Mausoleum.

James Franklin Hayes
James Franklin Hayes, 63, of Cobbtown died on Friday, June 24, 2005 in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by a wife, Jackie Hayes and a son, Jason C. Hayes.
He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Phillips Hayes of Cobbtown; sons, James E. Hayes of Lyons, Timothy L. Hayes of Soperton, Jeffery D. Hayes of Kansas City, MO and Chris Fincher of Cobbtown; daughters, Cindy Clark of East Dublin and Kimberlee Florez of Vidalia; a sister, Joyce Harris of Cobbtown; a brother, Talmadge Hayes of Cobbtown.
Pallbearers were Wayne Hayes, Gary Hayes, Lucky Hayes, Van Hayes, Leo Pope and Toby Harris. Honorary pallbearers were Leonard Parrish, Aubrey Crews, Albert Strickland and Glynn Phillips.
