Carl Inman Eason
Carl Inman Eason, age 75, of Atlanta, died July 4, 2005.
Mr. Eason was a native of Metter and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He loved to tell stories that never failed to bring a smile and enjoyed making lemon pies. He had a beautiful singing voice. Mr. Eason worked in pharmaceutical sales for 15 years.
He is survived by his sons, Dr. Carl Eason of Keystone Heights, Fl., and David Eason of Jacksonville, Al.; granddaughters, Sydney and Morgan Eason; sister, Colleen Stewart and Allyn Stewart Gaddis, both of Atlanta.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Lake Cemetery in Metter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Air Force Association.
Arrangements were made by H.M. Patterson & Son, Arlington Chapel.

Esther Lacy Lanier
Esther Lacy Lanier entered the kingdom of Heaven surrounded by loving family and friends on Tuesday, July 12, 2005. Mrs. Lanier succumbed to cancer at Taylor Memorial Hospital in Hawkinsville, Ga.
She was born in Metter to Dorothy Gooding Lacy and Perryno Lacy on Oct. 7, 1917. After high school she attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. In Metter, she met and married Morgan Brannen (Red) Lanier. Together they moved to Augusta, Ga., and there they opened and operated Lanier’s Grocery on Washington Road. Mrs. Lanier continued to reside in Augusta, Ga. after his death. She was always an active member of her church, Warren Baptist. She was also a member of the Joy Daylily Club. All who knew her knew she loved the Lord, loved her family and friends and loved her flowers. If she wasn’t at church or in her garden, she could be found in her home sitting and talking with friends or family.
She is survied by two daughters and sons-in law, Dorothy and Gene Cravey of Cochran, Brenda and Warren Sturman of League City, Tx.; five grandchildren, Elliott W. Sturman IV of Augusta, Michele Cravey Dyal and Brannen Lanier Cravey, both of Cochran, and Dawn Sturman Gemmill and Stephanie Sturman Medrano both of League City, Tx; six great-grandchildren, Travis Gemmill, Elizabeth Gemmill, Hannah Gemmill and Sophia Medrano of League City, Tx., and Mallory Dyal and Emily Dyal of Cochran; two sisters, Minnie Lee Tyler of Savannah and Ollie Mae Cunningham of Haysville, N.C., and many devoted nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held on Fri., July 15, 2005 at Platt’s Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue Chapel in Augusta with Rev. Robert Daniels and Rev. Rodger Henderson officiating. Committal followed at Westover Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Hoover Lanier, Larry Howell, Gene Colvin, Earl Welsh, Frank Lanier, Dwayne Bird and Paul Alexander. Honorary pallbearers were Dorcas Sunday School Class at Warren Baptist Church.
Abbie Lee Dekle
Abbie Lee Dekle, 92, daughter of the late Jim and Willie Pearl Alvin, died on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at North Broward Medical Center in Pompano Beach, Fl.
She was born on Dec. 29, 1917, in Metter and was preceded in death by two sons, Joe Louis and Grady Newkirk.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie James and Patricia Newkirk of Pompano Beach, Fl., Joel B. and Grace Newkirk of Statesboro, Lionel and Louise Newkirk of Atlanta; a daughter, Louise Evans of Fort Lauderdale, Fl.; a daughter-in-law, Hattie Newkirk of Statesboro; a sister-in-law, Lizzie Alvin of Milledgeville; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Katie Mattair
Katie Mattair Katie Mattair, 80, of Metter died on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at her residence. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Hallisey. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Kite.
She is survived by her husband, Wade Mattair of Metter; sons, Kenny Turner of Rincon and Claude Turner of Eden; daughters, Ginger Kitson of Faulkville and Linda Wade of Metter; a sister, Vera Mae Daniels of Twin City; a brother, Carlis Lee Riner of Macon; grandchildren, Chris Nettles, Edward Turner, Chad Turner, Gina Willaims, Clifford Rollins, Tommy Rollins, Michelle Kirkland, Randall Turner and Jeremy Turner; nine great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Susan Beasley of Bulloch County and Lynne Tischler of Johnson City, TX; and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, in the Chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Arthur Lee Conley officiating. Burial was in Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Emanuel County.
Pallbeaers were Ronnie Turner, Robbie Turner, Buddy Turner, Glynn Turner, Rollie Turner, Virgil Turner, Lewis Conley, and Tag Moore.

Polly Durden Tinker
Polly Durden Tinker, 88, died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Sunbridge Care Nursing Home in Statesboro. The Emanuel Co. native previously lived in Metter and has been in Statesboro for the last eight months. She worked as a secretary for financial companies for forty years. Her favorite hobby was gardening and working in the yard. She was a member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin W. Durden and Beatrice Cannady Durden.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lynda Tinker of Statesboro; two grandsons, Todd Tinker and Krey Tinker; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel with Elder John Shelton Mikell officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Todd Tinker, Krey Tinker, Phillip Durden, David Flanders, Ricky Weatherford, and Ron Weatherford.

Henrietta Pough
Henrietta Pough, 82, of Collins died Friday, July 22, 2005 at Tattnall Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Collins. She was married to the late Rev. Joe Nell Pough. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Daisy Pough and Alberta Pough.
Survivors include nine sons and five daughters-in-law, Joe Nell Pough Jr. of Wyandanch, NY, Samuel and Barbara Pough, and Nathaniel Pough, all of Amityville, NY, John Everett Pough, John Franklin Pough, Kermit and Beulah Pough, all of Collins, Cleotha and Sinnie Pough of Sandersville, Cleveland and Loretta Pough of Copaigue, NY and Ronnie and Shirley Pough of Miramar, FL; six daughters and three sons-in-law, Pearl P. Battle of Miami Gardens, FL, Leona P. and James Bolden of Miami, FL, Floria P. and Christopher Johnson of Hazelhurst, Viola P. and John Dawotola and Cassandra P. Rivers, all of Chicago, Il, and Carrie P. Rogers of Reidsville; three sisters, Addie Williams of Freeport, NY, Penny Johnson and Luella Hudson, both of Miami, FL; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Wilkerson Cemetery in Collins. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the W.H. Whitaker Memorial chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home, Metter.

Lucy Collins
Lucy Collins, 78, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Candler County Hospital.
The Candler County native and lifelong resident was a homemaker, a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Collins was a member of the Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Collins.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Gary Allen of Metter; a brother, Tom ‘Sonny’ Collins of Metter; grandchildren, Amber Mealor of Brooklet, Julian Allen of Atlanta and Autumn Allen of Metter; a great-grandchild, Brandon Mealor of Metter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Elder Woodrow Beasley officiated.
Pallbearers were Ralph Williford, Joey Collins, Malcolm Coleman, Herman Strange, Marvin Cadden and Dean Harris. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church.

Mattie Crooms Armstrong
Mattie Crooms Armstrong, 76, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Candler County Hospital.
The Candler County native lived in Augusta while she was married and has been a Metter resident for the past 20 years. She loved her family and watching television.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Armstrong; six brothers, George Lewis Crooms, Raymond Crooms, Jesse Crooms, Tommy Crooms, J.D. Crooms and Herbert Crooms; and two sisters, Ola Mae Parker and Ruby Williamson.
She is survived by a brother, Hubert Crooms of Metter; a sister, Catherine Meeks of Metter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Jim Wilson officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Buddy Meeks, Dean Crooms, James Crooms, Randy Crooms, Jimmy Parker and Donnie Parker.

Christine Lewis Mongin
Christine Lewis Mongin entered eternal rest on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at Candler Hospital in Savannah. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Amy Horton Lewis; a brother, Andrew L. Lewis Jr. and a sister, Betty Lewis Sitton.
She was a native of Irwin County but has lived in Effingham County for the past 22 years. She was a member of Countryside Baptist Church where she held many positions, including Sunday school teacher, choir member, Awana Director, WMU Director and was a member of the Finance Committee. She was instrumental in starting the Youth Awana programs in churches in Chatham and Effingham counties. She retired from Memorial Medical Center in Savannah as a nurse. After retiring from her nursing career, she began a new career as a faithful fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Lamar Mongin Sr. of Guyton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Sherrie Wiley of Rincon, Aubrey and Sharon Wiley of Richmond, VA, Jerry and Terri Wiley of Bloomingdale and Lamar Mongin Jr. of Savannah; two daughters and son-in-law, Pamela Mongin of Guyton and Michele and Thom Norton of Metter; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Lonnie Lewis of Claxton and Wendell Lewis of Polk City, FL; sisters, Shirley Tallman of Ellaville, Tillerie Stapleton of Guyton and Helen Jones of Auburndale, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday in the chapel of Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel. Interment was in Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Jean Nail Reynolds
Jean Nail Reynolds, age 66, of Cobbtown died early Wednesday morning, June 29, 2005.
The Tattnall Co. native lived several years in Atlanta, Florida, and Louisiana, before returning to the Cobbtown area where she and her husband remodeled her grandparents Annie and Johnnie P. Nail’s homeplace. She was a member of the Metter Presbyterian Church and was a former member of First Presbyterian of Slidell, LA, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and Elder. She was also a volunteer with C.A.S.A., Court Appointed Special Advocate in Slidell.
She was an avid gardener, and a member of the Metter Garden Club. She loved to cook and she and her husband owned and operated Catering by Jean.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, James “Jim” Reynolds of Cobbtown; a son, William James Reynolds of Miami, FL; daughters Jan Reynolds of Framingham, MA, Patricia Rozar of Opelika, AL, and Sandy Reynolds of Savannah; a brother: Buddy Nail of Cobbtown; sisters, Betty Kulick, of Jacksonville, FL, Joyce Oliver and Janice Alberson, both of Cobbtown; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 1, at Metter Presbyterian Church.

Talbert "T.L." Edenfield
Talbert “T.L.” Edenfield, 89, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. He was an Emanuel Co. native and lifelong Oak Park resident retiring as a merchant seaman with Exxon/Mobile. He served in the U.S. Army under General Patton’s command.
He is survived by three brothers, Harry Edenfield and Ray Edenfield, both of Jacksonville, FL and Ed R. Edenfield of Pembroke; a sister, Frankie Wilkes of Pooler; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in New Hope Cemetery in Lexsy.

Edith Jarriel West
Edith Jarriel West of Collins, 82, died Saturday, July 30, 2005 at St. Josephs/Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native was the daughter of the late Troy and Bessie Jarriel. She was a secretary for many years and a homemaker. She enjoyed growing roses and sharing them with friends. She returned to her homeplace in Collins almost 20 years ago and was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel V. West, Sr. and a son, Richard West.
Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Rena West of Collins; three daughters, Sandra West and Vivian West, both of Collins and Janice West of Statesboro; a brother, Jerry Jarriel of Collins; three sisters, Margaret Harrison of Savannah, Eva Claire Moody of Glennville and Faye Anderson of Collins; two grandsons, Mark West of Blackshear and Steve West of Collins; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Walter Leverett officiating. Burial was in Cedar Creek Cemetery.
