Grover Hubert Bruner
Grover Hubert Bruner Grover Hubert Bruner, 72, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the Candler County Hospital. The Candler Co. native lived all of his life in the Excelsior area where he was a member of Excelsior Baptist Church. He worked as a farmer, loving the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish and especially spend time with his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Vennie Ray Bruner and his father, Grover William Bruner.
He is survived by his mother, Ora Lee Brown Bruner of Metter; sons and daughters-in-law, Grover Hubert Bruner, Jr. (Patty) of Tampa, FL, Randall Lee Bruner of Forsyth, Joseph Martin “Joey” Bruner (Pam) of Metter, and Daniel Vance of Cobbtown; daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie Ann Guiliano (Sam) of Tampa, FL, Ruby Lynette Stewart of Metter, Tammie Sue Peters (Bill) of Metter, and Donna Vance of Metter; brothers, Herbert Bruner of Springfield, Clyde Bruner of Metter, Dean Bruner and William Bruner both of Savannah; sisters, Emmagene Rushing of Register and Mildred Bragg of Metter; eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 25, 2005 at Excelsior Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Ministers Jimmy Dupree and Randy Sykora officiated.
Pallbearers were Calvin Bragg, Addison Bragg, Grover Bragg, Bobby Bruner, William Bruner, Keith Bruner, Chris Bruner, Michael Bruner, Lloyd Bruner, Jim Rushing, Joel Rushing, David Bruner, and Steve Bruner. Honorary pallbearers were Timmy Sikes, Carroll Sikes, Sr., Carroll Sikes, Jr., Terry Anderson, Phillip Martin, The Breakfast Group at Edenfield’s Restaurant, and Deacons of Excelsior Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the American Heart Association, 7130 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Suite 101, Savannah, GA 31406, the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720 or Excelsior Baptist Church, Rt. 3 Box 199, Metter, GA 30439.

Mattie Barrs Jarriel Hill
Mattie Barrs Jarriel Hill, 97, died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at Tara Nursing Care in Thunderbolt. The Tattnall County native lived in Collins many years before moving to Brunwick over 30 years ago. She was a licensed Practical Nurse and retired from Brunswick Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hill was a member of the Glyndale Baptist Church. She was the widow of John L. Jarriel, Steve Jarriel and Buford Hill.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held on Wednesday with Rev. Charlie Cooper and Rev. Ken Creekmore officiating. Burial was in Cedar Creek Cemetery near Collins.
Pallbearers were Barry Stephens, Frank Stephens, Doug Stephens, Herbert Heath and Dan Barber.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Coleman Bird Hadden
Evelyn Coleman Bird Hadden, 88, died Sunday, July 31, 2005. The Tattnall County native lived most of her life in Savannah before moving back to the Metter area in 1988. She was a seamstress working with Levy’s Department Store and a parachute specialist having worked at Hunter Army Airfield. She loved to work in her flowers and yards and loved to ballroom dance, winning several awards. She was considered an outstanding cook by her family.
Survivors include her son, Pat Bird of Cobbtown; a sister, Eunice Collins of Metter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial in Primitive Grove Cemetery.

Forrest E. Manuel Sr.
Forrest E. Manuel Sr., 66, of Cobbtown died on Thursday, August 4, 2005 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro.
He is survived by a son, Forrest E. Manuel Jr. of Clermont, FL; sisters, Betty M. Bell and Mae M. Bland, both of Metter; brothers, Toby Manuel and Walter Manuel, both of Metter; three grandchildren, Jessica Manuel of Auburn, AL, Katelyn Manuel and Lacey Manuel, both of Denver, CO; and a great-granddaughter, Jewel Manuel of Auburn, AL.
Funeral services were held on Sunday in the Chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Holly Tapley officiating. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sean Harris, Dale Sykes, James Curl, David Griggs, Scott Steel, and Gene Manuel.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Ora Lee Brown Bruner
Ora Lee Brown Bruner, 91, died early Tuesday morning, August 9, 2005. The Candler County native lived all of her life here. She and her husband of 68 years, Mr. Grover Bruner, were founding members of Cedar Street Baptist Church, with Mrs. Ora Lee being the last surviving member. She was a member of Excelsior Baptist Church before the charter of Cedar Street, and then in her later years she returned to Excelsior, and taught Sunday school at both churches. She started the Cradle Roll at Excelsior Baptist Church, which continues today as the nursery. She was also a member of the WMU. She was a great cook and loved to quilt, making a quilt for each of her children. She was predeceased by her husband, Grover Bruner, son, Hubert Bruner, grandson, Benny Westberry, and a great-grandson, Danny Wayne Bruner.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert and Hazel Lee Bruner of Springfield, William L. “Bill” and Annette Bruner of Savannah, Dean and Vicki Bruner of Savannah, and Clyde and Ginny Bruner of Metter; daughters and son-in-law, Mildred B. Bragg of Metter and Emogene and James H. “Pete” Rushing of Register; 32 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchilren.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday at Excelsior Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Eckles, Rev. Gene Hiers, and Rev. Randy Sykora officiating. Burial was in the Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Excelsior Baptist Church and Cedar Street Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Excelsior Baptist Church, Rt. 3 Box 199, Metter, GA 30439, Cedar Street Baptist Church, P.O. Box 555, Metter, GA 30439, or Guido Evangelistic Association, P.O. Box 508, Metter, GA 30439.

Lt. Colonel Sammye Edenfield
Lt. Colonel Sammye Edenfield Ret., 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at her home in Stillmore. The Stillmore native lived in Savannah for several years after retiring from the US Army before moving back to Stillmore in 1998 to the home her parents bought in 1905 where she was born. She was a member of Stillmore Methodist Church, loved sports and was a # 1 Braves fan. She joined the US Army as a nurse in April 1942 and served her country for 26 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel, receiving 2 Bronze Stars, 1 Silver Star and the Legion of Merit. Serving during WWII and the Korean War, she was stationed in Africa, France, Germany, Japan and Korea. Serving her country wasn’t the only thing she did well, she was one of the first women in Georgia to earn a pilot’s license. She became an aviator instead because she said flying was easy because she loved it. However, when she joined the army, she stopped flying, because there was no such thing as female flyers. After serving in two wars, she came home to the United States and began touring her own country, visiting every state except Michigan and Utah.
She is survived by a sister, Jane E. Baker of Stillmore; a niece, Melinda B. Roberts of Grayson, GA; a nephew, Sam Jacobs of Marietta; a great-niece, Kathy Karilla and family of Tappa-hannock, VA; great-nephews, William P. Jacobs and family of Savannah, David B. Roberts and Joseph P. Roberts, both of Grayson, GA; great-nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services were on Saturday at Morgan Family Funeral Home with burial in the Stillmore City Cemetery. Full military honors were observed.

Brett Lanier
Brett L. Lanier, 23, of Powder Springs died Monday, August 1, 2005. He was born in Duluth at Joan Glancy Hospital. He lived in Monroe, Pageland, SC, Marietta, Powder Springs and Atlanta. Brett graduated from McEachern High School in 2000 and was currently attending Perimeter College. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marietta and very active in the youth program during his high school years. He was employed by Emeril’s Restaurant in Buckhead.
Brett was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, R.L. Lanier; and maternal grandparents, Thomas H. and Catherine Mae Trammell.
Survivors include his parents, Lynn M. & Rene Trammell Lanier of Powder Springs; one sister, Amanda Caylcen Lanier of Ostrava, Czech Republic; paternal grandmother, Myrtice L. Lanier of Alma; three uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Trammell, II of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Trammell of Stuttgart, Germany, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Trammell of Atlanta and their families. Brett was blessed to have a loving and extended family including many great aunts, great uncles and a multitude of cousins. His sweetheart, Caitlin Paige Harker of Alpharetta, also survives him.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (today) at First Baptist Church in Marietta, with Rev. Dr. Greg DeLoach officiating. Graveside services will be at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Metter.
Remembrances can be made to the First Baptist Church of Marietta, Youth Ministry, 148 Church Street, NE, Marietta GA 30060.

Rev. Jack Lanier Cook
Rev. Jack Lanier Cook, 75, of Darlington, S.C., (Philadelphia Community) died at his home on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. He was born in Metter, son of the late Preston Nicholas and Carrie Lanier Cook. He ws the step-son of Mary Cook Little. He served his country in the United States Army and was a retired minister. Rev. Cook pastored Southern Methodist churches in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina for 25 years and Baptist churches for three years. He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis F. Cook; a brother, Alton Cook; and sisters, Edna Earl Little and Dororthy Woods.
Survivors include his wife, Lois H. Cook; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris L. and Kay Cook of West Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet C. and Raymond McConnell of Harts-ville; five grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Holland and Marguerite Murray; half-brother, Nicholas Cook and two half-sisters, Ellen Rahn and Jan Nyborg.
Funeral services were held on Thursday at Faith Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church Cemetery.
Belk Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington, S.C. was in charge of arrangements.

Mattie Miller
Mattie Miller, 92, of Metter died Sunday, August 21, 2005 in the Metter Nursing Home. The Bulloch County native had lived in Candler County for most of her life. She was a member of Bessinger Tabernacle Baptist Church in the Adabell Community of Bulloch County. She was married to the late Choicy Miller.
Survivors include four daughters, Juanita Stapleton, Annie Wright, and Linda Oglesby, all of Metter, and Beatrice Moore of Gainesville; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 1 p.m. at W.H. Whitaker Memorial Chapel, Whitaker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Piney Grove Church Cemetery, in the Denmark Community of Bulloch County.

Nell C. Hulsey
Nell C. Hulsey, 68, of Eatonton died on Thursday, August 11, 2005, at Oconee Regional Medical Center. She was born in Aline on April 10, 1937. She worked as an insurance salesperson for Combined Insurance Company of America and was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. She was also the treasurer of Concord UMC and a past president of the Milledgeville Chapter of the American Lung Association.
Survivors include her husband Joe Hulsey of Eatonton; a son, Dr. J. Max Hulsey of Rome; and grandsons, Norris Hulsey of Flowery Branch and Tyler Hulsey of Rome.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 14, 2005 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel, with Rev. Bill Neely officiating. Burial was in Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Randy McMichael, Walt Hutchings, Bobby Holcomb, Bill Clark, Tim Scott and Clint Schewe. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Hulsey, Drew Hulsey, Chris Hulsey, Brent Schewe and John Simmons.
Memorials may be sent to the Milledgeville Chapter of the American Lung Association.

William Randy Ward
William Randy Ward, 51, of Metter died on Monday, August 8, 2005 in Augusta. He was a retired Sergeant First Class from the Army.
He is survived by his father, Sam Ward of Metter; a mother, Mary Wilkerson of Maryville, TN; a brother, Terry Ward of Metter.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery in Emanuel County with full military honors.

Grover Steve Lanier, Jr.
Grover Steve Lanier Jr., 76, passed into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, from his home in Metter.
Survivors include his wife, Bearneas Lanier of Metter; four daughters, Katharine Cunning-ham of Canaries Point, N.J., Judy Swint, Letrell Thomas, and Corrinne Daniels, all of Metter; one son, Robert Lanier of Philadelphia, PA.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at Thankful Baptist Church in Metter. Interment was held at Mt. Pisgah Church Cemetery in Statesboro.
Hodges Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.
