Georgia, U.S., Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978

Paul Robert Phillips, Sr.
Paul Robert Phillips Sr., 66, died Saturday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
He was born in Emanuel County and lived several years in Cobtown before moving to Jacksonville, Fl. He returned to Cobbtown in 1977. He worked several years with Lenahan Aluminum Window Company and retired from Robin Builders in Lyons. He was a farmer, an avid outdoorsman and an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dee Wheeler Phillips of Collins; a son, Paul Robert Phillips Jr. of Palatka, Fl.; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Cilela and Chad Pritchett of Dublin; a step-son, Craig Corbett of Reidsville; brothers, Wiley Phillips of Callahan, Fl., Jimmy Ray Phillips and Billy Joe Phillips, both of Cobbtown; sisters, Frankie McMillan of Metter, Johnnie Mae Hayes and Patricia Brown, both of Cobbtown.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in Sunlight Cemetery. Rev. Jim Rogers officiated.
Pallbearers were Heath Brown, Rusty Phillips, Randy McMillan, Tony McMillan, Jay Phillips and Sandy Phillips. Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Kennedy, Phillip Collins, Ronnie Ponder, Daniel Kennedy, Rick Coley, Ricky Jarriell, members of Flat Wood Hunting Club and members of Elite Sunday School Class.
Remembrances can be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church, c/o Raymond Brown, 140 Skid Rich Rd., Collins GA 30421.

Claudine M. Colley
Claudine M. Colley, 87 of Cobbtown died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Bethany Home Nursing Center in Vidalia.
She was born in Tattnall County (on Feb. 15, 1916) and lived most of her life in Cobbtown. She was a homemaker and a member of Cobbtown Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Colley Sr., and three children, Sandra Witcher of Bowman, Lucy Colley of Cobbtown and Herman Colley Jr. of Plant City, Fl.
She is survived by a son, Frank Colley of Metter; a daughter, Rosalyn Collins of Guyton; brothers, Bryant Moore of Garden City, Rev. Lamar Moore of Lexington, N.C., Rev. Ellis Moore of Evans, John Moore of Lyons, and Roger Moore of Bellville; sisters, Mattie Moses of Rush City, MN, Laura Collins of Collins, Margie Moore of Cobbtown, Naomi Molchan of Mt. Dora, Fl., and Marie Cooper of Savannah; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Lamar Moore officiating. Burial was in Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Hugh Wilson
Donald Hugh Wilson, 38, died August 20, 2003 in Vallejo, CA. Born in Savannah, the son of the late Pete and Jackie Beasley Wilson, he spent his childhood in Effingham County, graduating from Effingham County High School in 1984 and served in the US Navy. Very photogenic and an aspiring model, he attended Savannah College of Art and Design, going on to study Cosmetology and owning a salon in Springfield for several years. He moved to California in 1993 and has been a resident of Vallejo for the past 10 years.
He is survived by his partner of 15 years, Ricardo Tringali of Vallejo, CA; three brothers, William M. Wilson Jr., Johnny Dennis Wilson and Charles Sebron Wilson; two sisters, Deborah Faye Hales and Jacqueline Mae Wilson; grandmother, Bertha Mae Wilson; his beloved Aunt Faye Cobb; and other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and his cherished basset hound, Megan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 11 a.m. at Salem Church in Metter with Rev. Ben Martin officiating. Burial of cremains will follow in the church cemetery.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Richard Smith Jr.
Funeral services for Marvin Richard Smith, Jr., 30, were held on Monday at 3 p.m. in the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel of Stanley Funeral Home in Dublin. Rev. Ben Edwards and Rev. Robert Rogers officiated. Interment followed in Blue Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
He was a lifelong resident of Laurens County, son of late Marvin Smith, grandson of the late Ruben Smith and a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Smith of East Dublin; his mother Kathy Garrett of Rockledge; brother Lance Smith of Rockledge; maternal grandparents, Rev. William and Vivian Garrett of Rockledge; paternal grandmother Myrtle Smith of Rockledge; two step-daughters, Kimberly Foster of Dublin and Kristie Browning of Dublin; three grandchildren, Nicholas Browning, Cameron Foster, and Logan Browning.
Pallbearers were Larry Lumley, Kelly Thigpen, Dale Payne, Ryan Kersey, Walt McDaniel, Daniel Kight, Alex Franks, and Michael Williams.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Blue Springs Baptist Church Building Fund in care of Virginia Young, 1401 Minter Tweed Rd., Dublin, GA 31027.
Stanley Funeral Home of Dublin was in charge of arrangements.

John Lewis
John Lewis, 77, died Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at Metter Nursing Home. Born in Norwich, CT, he lived in Candler County for the past 30 years. He was retired from the U.S. Army serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a newspaper pressman for the Norwich Bulletin and Orlando Sentinel Star. He retired from Georgia Power as a procedures specialist. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet McNair Lewis of Metter; one son, John R. Lewis of Kennesaw; one sister, Linda Trent of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at El Bethel Cemetery with Elder Sam Bowen officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday (today) from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Remembrances can be made to the Diabetic Association or El Bethel Baptist Church, Rt. 2, Twin City, GA 30471.

Ruth Lockett
Ruth Lockett, 71, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003, in the Candler County Hospital in Metter. She was a native of Chatham county and lived several years in Emanuel and Candler counties. She was a member of Freddie’s Temple Holiness Church in Twin City.
She is survived by five daughters, Mary Lockett, Helen Moody, Julia Byrd, Betty Frison, Becky Lockett, all of Metter; four sons, John C. Lockett and David Lockett, both of Nevils, Jacob Lockettt of Portal and Corey Lockett of Metter; two sisters, Madeline Gray and Dorothy Grant, both of Savannah; two brothers, Jesse Bacon and Clarence Bacon, both of Savannah; 28 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Freddie’s Temple Holiness Church in Twin City, with burial in Willow Springs Cemetery.
Whitaker Funeral Homes of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Lonnie McCullough
Lonnie McCullough, 80, of Cobbtown died Friday at Candler County Hospital. The Tattnall Co. native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Metter Free Will Baptist Church. He was predeceased by a son, J.D. McCullough.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Jones McCullough; sons, Johnny McCullough of Cobbtown and Glen McCullough of Lizella; two daughters, Linda Kennedy of Collins and Patricia Beasley of Metter; one sister, Mary Jane Phillips of Metter; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were John Beasley, Richard Beasley, Rusty Beasley, Clayton Bailey, Bobby Crosby and Preston Williams.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons and their wives of the Metter Free Will Baptist Church, Bo and Charlene Ward and Marvin and Anna Abell.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Johnny Beasley and Rev. Henry Dowd officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to Metter Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, Eldridge St., Metter, GA 30439.

David John Sweet
David John Sweet, 40, of Metter died on October 17, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in a fire at his home. Born on December 23, 1962 in Barre, VT, he graduated from Oxbow High School in 1980. He was a brick mason and carpenter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was past member of Waits River Methodist Church.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Veanna and Carl Maxwell of Waits River; four brothers, Monty Sweet Jr., Cameron Sweet, Roger Maxwell and Nathanial Maxwell; one sister, Samantha Humphery; and serveral nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. in the East Corinth Congregational Church. Interment will be in the Waits River Cemetery at a later date.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter is in charge of local arrangements.

James “Benjie” Smith
James “Benjie” Smith, 70, died Sunday, October 12, 2003, at his residence near Reidsville after a courageous battle with cancer. The Evans Co. native lived most of his life in Evans and Tattnall counties. He was a self-employed builder and farmer and served in teh U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Bellville United Methodist Church, an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Smith and Mattie Lou Sapp Smith, and a sister, Betty S. Dixon.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wildes Smith of Reidsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Billy Scott of Richmond Hill, Debra and David Dinkins of Reidsville; grandchildren, Davy and Kayse Dinkins and Sarah, Rachel and Rebecca Scott.
Pallbearers will be Danny Bell, Gary Bell, David Deloach, Bill Pryor, Jerry Sapp and Ricky Hodges.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at J. Mellie Nesmith Funeral Home in Claxton with Rev. Michael Myers officiating. Burial will be in the Brewton Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to the Bellville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 111, Bellville, GA 30414.

Herman Richard Schneider
Herman Richard Schneider died October 7, 2003. He was born January 4, 1938 in Portland, Oregon and graduated from University of Oregon in 1958 and worked for Georgia-Pacific for 21 years. He began his career in Portland, and transferred to Savannah in 1973 where he rose o mill manager. In 1983, he transferred to the headquarters in Atlants to finish his career with the company. He then started his own export business, Schneider International, Inc. He demonstrated an unwavering work ethic and lived his life as a true gentleman. His passions included working with his hands, building, boating, and spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Eugene Schneider and Katrina Schneider of Portland, OR.
He is survived by his wife, Laneive Collins Schneider of Marietta; his sons, Ryan Schneider, Jay Schneider, Wayne and Patti Hendricks, Allen Hendricks, Richard and Kelly Schneider; his daughters, Lea and Glen Scarbrough and Celia and Brance Shaw; his brother, Robert and Linda Schneider; and his grandchildren, Jonathan, Stephen, Carey, Addison, Elliot, Bailee and Tyler.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Cobbtown Baptist Church in Cobbtown with burial in Sunlight Cemetery.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
