James Jukes
Funeral services for Ret. SFC James Carlee Jukes, 63, of Thomson, were Friday, Oct. 15 at the Greater St. James AME Church, with the Rev. Gerald Caldwell, pastor, officiating. Interment with full military honors was in Westview Cemetery.
Mr. Jukes was a graduate of Nash County school system and a retired Vietnam-era veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 26 years. He was also retired from the Department of Defense, Ft. Gordon.
He worshiped at Greater St. James AME Church, where he served as trustee.
He served as worshipful master for Freedom Lodge No. 143, district deputy grandmaster and secretary for Georgia.
Survivors are two sons, Mark Jukes, Atlanta, and Clark Jukes, North Augusta, S.C.; three daughters, Sandra Campbell, Atlanta, Jacqueline Jukes and Kimberly Martin, both of Thomson; six grandchildren; stepmother, Mamie Jukes, Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Carrie Hinton, Tarboro, N.C.; two brothers, Edward McClellan, Patterson, N.J. and Llondell Jukes, Fayetteville, N.C.; and other relatives and friends.
George Jones
Funeral services for Deacon George Jones, former ly of Thomson, were Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Mt. Pleasant and Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Anthoni McElrath, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, George Parker; a sister, Susie Durham; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
James Thomas
Services for James Willard Thomas, 65, of Dexter, were Saturday, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Burial followed in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Officiating was the Rev. Jay Moore. Mr. Thomas died Wednesday, Dec. 1.
Mr. Thomas was a native of Laurens County. He was a member of Red Hill Lodge No. 533 F & AM.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of United States.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Fannie Heath Thomas.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Faith Craft of Dexter; daughter, Laurie Leigh Thomas of Thomson; son, James Willard Thomas Jr. of Swainsboro; daughter, Dana Michelle "DeDe" Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla.; adopted son, Gregory James Thomas of Gibson; father, James H. "Pete" Thomas of Dublin; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne "Dophie" and Brenda Thomas of Gray; one grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nora Johnston
Nora "Candy" Louise Johnston, 55, of Gibson, died Dec. 4, at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Marvin T. Johnson Sr. and the daughter of the late Chalmers Dewitt Usry and the late Louise Newsome Brooks.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Kitchens officiating. Interment followed in the Bethel United Methodist Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Augusta, but lived in Colorado before moving to Gibson 20 years ago. She was a homemaker and managed a food service for many years. Mrs. Johnson was also a member of the Gibson Church of God.
Survivors include two sons, Martin Thomas Johnson Jr. of Gibson and Tommy Malcolm Johnson (Roxanne) of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Anna Marie Kitchens (Chris) of Thomson; two sisters, Gail Newsome of Thomson and Faye Redfern of Dublin; two grandchildren, Brittany kitchens and Brianna Kitchens; one nephew, T.H. Haygood of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; mother and father-in-law, Florine and Ken Kurtz of Melbourne, Fla.
Pallbearers were Lester Newsome, Jim Owens, Mike Lyons, Thomas Chalker, Julian Kitchens and Talmadge Chalker.

Harry Boyd
Harry "Woody" Boyd, 61, of Gibson, died Sunday, Dec. 5, at his home.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 8, at James Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Ray Garren, Jerry Rockefeller and Ed Renew officiating. Interment followed at Coleman Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Wadley.
Mr. Boyd served in the U.S. Army, where he received numerous medals, including a Purple Heart. He was a member of Coleman Chapel United Methodist Church and was employed with the Jefferson County Magistrate Court as a constable for nine years.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ivey Dell Newsome McZilkey, and father, Milton McZilkey.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Boyd; three sons, Kevin Boyd, Milledgeville, Tommy (Pam) Rodgers, Thomson, and Daniel (Heather) Rodgers, Dublin; three daughters, Suzanne (Shawn) Bowden, Beach Island, S.C., Leigh (Ryan) Coxville, Gibson, and Chrissy Wiggins, Harlem; stepmother, Betty McZilkey, Harlem; two brothers James (Donna) Boyd, North Charleston, S.C., and Alvin Phillips, Harlem; one sister Kathleen (Jim) McCarty, Thomson; grandchildren Kelli (Stevie) Cooper, Maranda Rodgers, Sabrina Rodgers, Autumn Coxville, Alexis Coxville, Ryleigh Coxville, Lori Spelts, Amanda Bowden, Travis Rodgers, Brandon Bowden and Jason Ford; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Cooper; and friend, Betty Bowman, Wadley.
Honorary pallbearers were Jefferson County law enforcement, and Glascock County Sheriff Bryan Bopp.

Emily Smith
Emily Adkins Smith, 87, of Thomson, died Dec. 5, at her home. She was the wife of the late Floyd Cleo Smith and the daughter of the late Weaver A. Adkins and the late Nora Brown Adkins.
Graveside services were Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, with Dr. James M. Ramsey officiating.
Mrs. Smith was born in Oglethorpe County, lived in the Atlanta area and resided in McDuffie County for the past 10 years. She was a retired seamstress at Thomson Co. and retail clerk with JCPenny. Mrs. Smith was also a member of First Baptist Church, Thomson.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean S. Langham (Reese) of Thomson; sisters, Ruby Turner, Helen Harper and Beatrice Morris, all of Thomson, Credelle Ariail of Duncanville, Texas, Marvis Bramlett of Lawrenceville, and Imogene Cowart of Stone Mountain; six grandchildren, Beverly Graham, Kathy Locklear, Judy Lendman, Gale Chapman, Vicky Reese and Gary Smith; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Dean Smith and Gary Dale Smith.
Pallbearers were Bruce Adkins, Gary Adkins, Greg Morris, Scott Bramlett, S.A. Partridge Jr. and Keith Verner.

Crill Olsson
Crill Olsson, 66, of Thomson, died Friday, Dec. 3, in University Hospital.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating. Burial was in the Decatur City Cemetery, Decatu.
Mr. Olsson was a resident of McDuffie County. He was retired from the Department of Public Safety.
Survivors include his fiancee, Kathryn Hunt, Thomson; two sisters; and two brothers.
Annie Edwards
Homegoing celebration for Sister Annie Bell Edwards, 89, of Thomson, were Wednesday, Dec. 8, 7 p.m., at United House of Prayer for All People, Dearing, with Elder W.P. Scott, pastor, officiating. Interment will be Thursday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m., in the church cemetery.
She was a member of United House of Prayer, where she had served under the leadership of all three bishops.
Survivors include five sons, James (Georgia) Turman, Charles (Ezella) Edwards, Walter (Brenda) Edwards Jr., Marcus Edwards and Johnny (Christine) Edwards, all of Dearing; three daughters, Johnnie Walker, Dearing, Mary Johnson, Harlem, and Annie Belton, Thomson; one brother, John (Julia) Hampton, Augusta; one sister, Hattie Hobbs, Atlanta; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Sara Dell McGahee
Sara Dell McGahee, 74, of Thomson, died Dec. 10 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Don Widener officiating. Interment followed in West View Cemetery, Thomson.
Mrs. McGahee was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County.
She was retired as a bookkeeper. Mrs. McGahee was also a member of First Baptist Church, Thomson, and was a member of the Thomson Lioness Club.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Patsy Reese (Bill), Mitchell, Rita Faure (Miguel), Appling, Gloria Machalk (Brian), Louisville, Kathy Gunnels (David), Wrens, and Tonya Gunby (Robert), Stapleton; sister, Juanita Welmaker, Warrenton; nine grandchildren, Matthew Holley, Tammie Graham, Travis Holley, Eric Usry, Chris Gunnels, Sarah Gunnels, Beth Gunnels, Cody Gunby and Kimberly Gunby; and one great-grandchild, Haleigh Graham.
Pallbearers were Matthew Holley, Eric Usry, Shannon Graham, Chris Gunnels, Matthew McGahee, Stanley McGahee, Brandon McGahee and Josh McGahee.
Susie Maxwell
Susie Kennedy Maxwell, 93, of Washington, died Monday at Wills Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Beaverdam Baptist Church, with Revs. Jim Edwards and Thomas Epps officiating.
Mrs. Maxwell was a native of Wilkes County and had lived there all of her life. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sally Evans Kennedy, and was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Maxwell, and two sons, James Maxwell and Billy Gene Maxwell Sr. She was a homemaker and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Clarence (Elizabeth) Norman, of Lincolnton, Christine Young, of Washington, and Della Holstein, of Washington; one son, Larry Maxwell of Washington; one brother, L.N. Kennedy of Thomson; and a sister-in-law, Amy Lou Kennedy of Thomson.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Maxwell, James Jones, Billy Maxwell, Donnie Maxwell, Clarence Norman Jr., and Peyton Norman.

Mrs. Clarice Neal Anderson
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Clarice Neal Anderson of 2043 Byrd Road, Thomson, entered into rest Nov. 30, 2003 at her residence.
Survivors include daughter, Betty Anderson (Byrd), Thomson; daughter-in-law, Musa Anderson, Thomson; brother: Herbert 'Chicken' Neal, Thomson; sisters: Jamie Newsome, Harlem, Ga., Mary Brooks, Augusta, Margaret Burch, Evans, Ga., and Adel Williams, Warrenton, Ga.; grandson, Chris Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Mrs. Anderson was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Jut Anderson, Sr. and her son Jut Anderson, Jr.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Dunaway officiating. Interment was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
