Fred Winslette
Fred Winslette, 83, of 302 Grove St., Eatonton died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Oconee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel on Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Kitchen officiating. Interment was in Eatonton Memorial Park.
The Putnam County native was born Nov. 18, 1920 to W.G. Winslette, Sr. and Willie DeLoach and was married to Louise Winslette.
He served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a radio/TV repairman and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Eatonton, a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, City Councilman for more than 20 years, fire chief for the city, masonic lodge-past worshipful master.
Survivors include: wife, Louise Winslette, Eatonton, sons Charles Winslette, Toccoa, Keith Winslette, Rome and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers include Kenneth Winslette, Ronnie Winslette, Jimmy Bell, Tommy Welch, Ricky Wooten, Kent Lawrence, David Giddens, Dappa Smith and Glenn Winslette.
Honorary pallbearers include Doug Cunningham, John Paul Jones, Sammy Wooten, J.T. Brock, Fidelis Sunday School, Johnny Davis, Fire Department, City Council.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Dean Chaffin Crane
Mary Dean Chaffin Crane, 76, of Eatonton died Monday, May 24, 2004 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Mrs. Crane was born in Jasper County on December 22, 1927 to Eddie L. Chaffin and Dessa Mae Parker. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: sons, Eddie Roper, Snellville; Sidney Roper, Conley; Olan Roper, Duluth; 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Tuesday, May 25, 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held May 26, 3 p.m., at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Roper officiating.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Ray Cameron
Ray Cameron, 82, of Eatonton died Friday, July 30, 2004. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2 in the Chapel of Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Interment followed in Parkway Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Bohannon and the Rev. Blackie Bellury officiating.
Mr. Cameron was a native of Greenup County, KY, was the son of the late James and Lula Wright Cameron. He was retired from Robins AFB and was an avid fisherman, having won several tournaments at Lake Sinclair. He attended Lakeshore Community Church and was former volunteer firefighter with the Twin Bridges Fire Station. He was also a Mason. His son, Dan Cameron, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Carol Cameron of Eatonton. Children: Debbie (Joe) Harbin of Bonaire, Michael D. Cameron of Eatonton and Karen (Mike) Sipes of Leesburg, OH. Six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
The family received friends Sunday at the Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Houston County, 103 Westridge Dr., Warner Robins, Ga. 31088.
Heritage Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mattie Mae James
Funeral services were held at Free Gift Baptist Church in Eatonton on Saturday, July 24 for Mattie Mae James who died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta. The Rev. J.W. Reid officiated, Interment was in Free Gift Baptist Church Cemetery.
“Matt” as she was affectionately called by her many relatives and friends was a life long resident of Eatonton. She was born on April 6, 1925 to the parentage of the late Alf and Mamie Binion. She was married in December of 1943 to the late Henry James, to this union four children were born, Dorothy James and two grandchildren Anita James and Dwight Burston preceded here in death.
She was a long time cook at the old Jordan Hospital and inlater years she was employed as a cook at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eatonton Manufacturing Company and Enterprise Aluminum. She was educated in the church schools of Putnam County and a member of Free Gift Baptist Church.
Survivors include: son, Eddie “Hooly” James, Eatonton, two daughter, Linda James, Atlanta and Doretha James, Eatonton; three grandchildren Rio Sanchez James, Diamond Brianna Brown and Kristen Danielle Brown; two sons-in- law Dwight Burton, Atlanta and Willie Brown, Eatonton. God children Dayvener Geter and Jasmine Geter, a devoted niece and nephew Shirley Binion Brox and Albert Binion, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers were friends and neighbors.
Flower bearers were friends and neighbors.
Putnam Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Christopher (Chris) Harrell
1950-2004
Christopher O’Steen Harrell (54) passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2004.
Chris, the son of the late Charles and Edna Harrell, was born March 8, 1950 in Troy, Alabama. He graduated from high school in 1968 as an honor graduate and was voted the most valuable player on the baseball team his senior year. In 1971, he graduated from Troy State University with a B.S. degree in Accounting and received his CPA degree in 1982.
Chris’ professional career consisted of twelve years with the Internal Revenue Service, and he recently retired from The Southern Company in Atlanta, Georgia.
Chris is Survived by his wife Karen Harvill, of 20 years and stepson Brad of Eatonton, brother Andy Harrell and wife Melba of Milton, F1orida, sister Olivia Youse and husband Richard of Tallahassee, Florida, brother Jeff Harrell and wife Kam of Jonesboro, Georgia.
Services for Chris were held in Troy, Alabama on Sunday, October 11, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations to the Big Oak Ranch, P.O. Box 507, Springvil1e, Alabama 35146. Big Oak Ranch is a Christian home for abused children.

Martin Melton, Jr.
Martin Melton, Jr., 81, of McDonough, died October 1, 2004. He was born in Eatonton, Ga. to the late Florence and Martin LeCroy Melton, Sr. He served our country during World War II with the United States Marine Corps.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Cannon - Cleveland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Lewis Strickland and Dr. Brian W. Lee officiating. Interment followed at 5 p.m. in Pinegrove Cemetery in Eatonton, Ga. with military honors.
Survivors include is wife, Alice Melton; son, Martin LeCroy and Judy Melton, III, Hartwell, Ga.; granddaughter, Rachel Victoria Melton, Atlanta, Ga., step-daughter, Wanda Anderson, Stockbridge, Ga.; step-sons, Randall McWaters and Donnie McWaters.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Philadelphia United Methodist Church.

Gwendolyn Smith
Gwendolyn Smith, 84, of Cumming died Friday, October 1, 2004, Mrs. Smith was a native of Forsyth County. She had retired from Dessau Realty and Ins. Co. in Macon, Ga. after 40 years of service. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Lewis A. Hall and 2nd husband, Charles M. Smith. Sr.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens in Macon, Ga. with Bill Preston officiating.
Survivors include daughter, Margaret Jo Jefferson, Cumming; grandson, John David Jefferson; sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Buck Roper, Cumming; nephews, Ronnie Roper, Robert Roper; niece, Donna Jean Rumgay, Hamilton, OH and several other relatives also survive.
Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming was in charge of arrangements.

Curtis U. Walker
Funeral services for Mr. Curtis U. Walker were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 at the Grant Family Plantation “The Old House” 138 Wards Chapel Rd., Eatonton, Georgia. Dr. Carolyn McCrary and Bishop Quincy Carswell, officiating. Interment was in Wards Chapel AME Church Cemetery in Eatonton.
Survivors include: wife, Eva Crawford Walker; daughters, Kiietti Walker-Parker (Arbie), Tias Walker, Kamilah walker, Ginger Walker; son, Curtis Lee Walker (Ann); grandchildren, Tiberni, Curtis Lee, Jr., Princess; brothers, Fred Walker (Lizzie), Robert Walker (Deborah); sisters, dr. Mamie Lee Walker, Annie Ruth Walker-Hood, Alice Tallulah Kate Walker, other relatives and friends.
Meadows Mortuary in Atlanta, Ga. was in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Thomas Brake, Sr.
Charlie Thomas Brake, Sr., 80, of 100 Phillips Dr., Eatonton, Ga. died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services were held at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Willard and David Hinson officiating. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery.
The Putnam County native was born April 16, 1924. He was married to Margharetta Brake. He was retired from Cotton States Insurance Agency and a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church and the VFW.
Survivors include: wife, Margharetta brake, Eatonton, sons, Chuck T. Brake, Jr., Decatur, Al, Charles Kenneth Brake, Salem, Or., daughter, Brenda Garrard, Molena, Ga., sisters, Ida Crane of Winder, Ga., Betty Moore of Buckhead, brother, B.T. Brake, Jr. of Manchester, TN. Stepchildren, Libby Gregory, Charlotte N.C., Steven Gregory, Eatonton, Patricia Wilson, Cumming, James Gregory, III, Stone Mountain and 16 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Steven Gregory, Russ Hicks, Randy Mooney, Tommie Lawrence, Gary Denham, Glenn Corbet
Honorary pallbearers were: Martin Pine, Barry Wilson, Bill Dodson, Clayborn McMichael, Carl Dennis, Jim Gregory.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.
