John Travis Goss, 34, 1501 Cochran Road, Madison, Ga. died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at his residence. Graveside services were held at the Goss family cemetery Friday, May 20 at 2 p.m. Mr. Goss was born December 28, 1970 in Morgan County, to Riccardo “Ricky” Goss, Sr. and Cathy Booth Goss, of Buckhead, Ga. He was a self-employed handyman. Survivors include: daughter, Sierra Goss of Rockmart, Ga.; sister, Angie Goss, Gainesville; brother, Riccardo Steven Goss of Eatonton; nephews, Peyton Goss, White Plains, Bradley Moore, Eatonton, Brayden Goss, Eatonton. Pallbearers were: Donnie Booth, Ryan Booth, Jason Booth, Ed Booth, Sean Booth, Danny Booth, James David Booth, Andrew Pittman Spell. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of final arrangements.

John J. Gunter
John J. Gunter, 84, of 307 Greensboro Road, Eatonton died Sunday, May 22, 2005 at Greene Point Health Care in Union Point. Graveside services were held at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens, Georgia on Tuesday, May 24 at 2 p.m with the Rev. Larry Glover officiating. The Elbert County, Ga. native was born on July 26, 1920 to David Gibson Gunter and Georgia Higginbotham. He was a mechanic and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include: brothers, Edd Gunter of Eatonton, Bob Gunter of Milledgeville, Allen Gunter of Athens and David Gunter of Bogart; sisters, Gertrude Bradshaw and Nell Townsend of Watkinsville, Mae Harvey of Milledgeville and Helen Johnson of Statham. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of final arrangements.

Leroy Bullard, Sr.
Leroy Bullard, Sr., 69, of Monticello died Friday, May 13, 2005. Funeral services were held at Griggs Chapel AME Church on Wednesday, May 18 at 1 p.m. Burial was in Eatonton City Cemetery. He was educated at Brown Chapel School in Eatonton. He was employed at Eatonton Enterprise and Cecil Amos Dairy Farm, served as lead guitar player for the True Spirituals Gospel Singers, Silver Airs and Trumpeters. Survivors include: wife, Leth Bullard, daughter, Theresa Williams of Decatur, sons: Thomas J. Bullard of Decatur, Floyd Bullard, James Bullard, both of Monticello, Leroy Bullard, Jr. of Eatonton; brothers, Paul Bullard of Decatur, R.B. Bullard of Cochran; sisters, Nancy Jones of Eatonton, Julie Jacobs of Monticello, Catherine Brooks of Decatur, Elenora Bullard of Atlanta, Flossie Ham of Macon, fifteen grandchildren and three great-grand children. Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Monticello were in charge of final arrangements.

Lizzie B. Parham Dennis
Funeral services for Mrs. Lizzie B. Parham Dennis, age 90, were held Tuesday afternoon, May 10, who passed away in a local health care facility Thursday, May 5, 2005. Services were at Henderson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. W.C. Jones, pastor officiating and the Rev. Presley, The Rev. Cartwright, the Rev. Lewis Parham, the Rev. Henry Loyal, the Rev. Jessie Porter and others assisting . Burial was followed in Henderson Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dennis was a native and life long resident of Putnam County. She attended local schools and churches in Eatonton, Ga. She later became a member of Henderson Grove Baptist Church and a member of the Deaconess Board, the Usher Board and with distinctions she became the Mother of The Church. Also, she was chosen by the NAACP in 1974 as the Mother of the Year. She was a homemaker most of her life. Cherishing her memories is a daughter, Mrs. Doris M. Driskell of Decatur, GA; three sons, Mr. Willie Frank Dennis of Eatonton, GA, Mr. Charles Dennis of Detroit, Michigan and Mr. Isaac Dennis, Jr. of Decatur; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Leola Dennis of Eatonton; Mrs. Daniel Mae Dennis of Decatur, and Mrs. Rosa L. Dennis of Eatonton; three sons-in-law, Jerry Driskell Sr. of Decatur, Willie Crawford and Ollie Bolds of St. Petersburg, Florida; twenty-one grandchildren, forty-eight great-grand children; nine great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pallbearers and floral bearers were family and friends. Hurt and Redd Funeral Home of Eatonton were in charge of final arrangements.

Michael “Scotty” Hunter
Michael “Scotty” Hunter, 37, died Monday, May 9, 2005. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 14 at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Milledgeville. Interment was at Heritage Memorial Park. Mr. Hunter was a native of Atlanta and had lived in Covington, Kentucky for the past six months. He was an automotive body technician. Survivors include: daughters, Amanda and Natalie Hunter of Covington, Kentucky; sons, Cameron and Brandon Maddox of Duncan, Oklahoma; mother, Jeanette Coker and stepfather, Mike Coker of Lake Sinclair; sister, Sherry Morris of Social Circle; and brother, Ricky Morris of Duluth. Williams Funeral Home & Crematory of Milledgeville was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Louise McDonald
Doris Louise McDonald, 81, of Athens, formerly of Greensboro, died Thurday, May 12, 2005 at Athens Heritage Nursing Center. Born in Putnam County on June 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Tom Everett McDonald and Leila Twilley McDonald. During her working career she was a secretary for the Veterans Administration. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Athens. She is survived by a sister. Lorena McDonald Lee and husband Billy of Athens, GA and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Interment will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Bob Beeland, Comer Tolbert, Jim Vinson. Quenton Hadden, Johnny Hawks and Wallace Patton. Howard Winkfield Layson
Howard Winkield “Wink” Layson, 75, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at West View Cemetery. Mr. Layson a native of Putnam County, and had made his home in Macon for 50 years. He was a real estate broker, and taught real estate classes for many years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was active in politics and did things his way. Survivors include his wife Toy C. Layson of Milledgeville, two daughters, Linda Layson White of Milledgeville, and Leah Cecelia Layson of Athens, four brothers; Van Layson of Eatonton, AllenLayson of Reform, AL, Frank Layson of Warner Robins, and Addison Layson of Calhoun, Ga., two sisters, Eleanor Sirmans of Hawkinsville, and Janie Layson Little of Eatonton, two grandchildren Nicholas Layson Sanders and Leah Brenner Sanders. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Prevent Blindness Georgia, 455 E. Paces Ferry Rd., Suite 222, Atlanta, GA 30305. Moores Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Annie Kate Waller
Funeral service for Annie Kate Waller, who passed Thursday, April 28, 2005 was held May 4 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Eatonton with the Rev. Ricky Lockhart officiating assisted by others. Interment was in the East Eatonton Cemetery. Mrs. Waller was born on June 28, 1938, she was entrusted to the parentage of Arthur and Pauline Simmons Nelson. She was embraced with the love by eleven siblings. She was a life long resident of Eatonton, Georgia. She was educated in the Putnam County School System. While on her life’s journey she excepted the lord as her personal Savior. Her husband Rudolph Waller, Sr. and son Anthony Waller preceded her in death. Kate was known for cooking and showing many other acts of kindness towards her family, neighbors, and friends. She had a deep love for cooking. She kept the pilot light burning because of her loving to feed everyone. She’ll probably look back, if only, to check and see if the stove was turned off. She was a loving neighbor. She truly lived by the words “Love they neighbor as thyself.” Think of the courage, the dedication, and the strength she exhibited when we needed her shoulders and her heart to guide and teach us. She was our pillar of strength. she tried to show us how to be ready for anything. even for this day. Now, it is up to us to see the light; not from the stove, but the one she put in our hearts that will never go out. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Tereasa Waller-Stephens: sons, Arthur, Larry, Randy (Betty) of Eatonton, Willie Joe (Veronica) of Waycross; Allen, Boston, MA, and Charles Parham, Atlanta. She also reared Roosevelt Nelson, Conyers and Alvin Dwayne Waller, Orlando, FL, stepdaughters: Virginia Jordan, Eatonton and Shirley Waller, Atlanta, stepsons: Larry (Verna) Coats, Macon, Ernest (Mary) Scott, Atlanta, Terry Scott, Rudolph Waller, Jr., Eatonton and Jerome Waller of Clarksville, TN; one sister, Sara Driskell, Milledgeville, one uncle, Rev. Smith Simmons, Washington, DC; God-daughter, Mary Dunn Reaves, Eatonton; sisters-in-law Odessa Juhans, Geneva Millines, Ezella Holcomb all of Atlanta; Mozella Tolbert, Perryville, MD and Mary Ann Nelson, Eatonton; brothers-in-law, Tilmon Waller, Jr., Calvin (Patricia), Vernon (Bobby) all of Atlanta; three devoted neighbors, Annie Bell Cole, Gladys C. Hardy, and Vanessa Caine, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends will also cherish her memories. James “Jimmy” Braswell
James Asbury “Jimmy” Braswell, 69, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at The Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello, Ga. The family will hold a private service. The Lilburn, Ga. native was born July 9, 1955 to Guy Braswell and Arvilla Holeman Braswell. Survivors include: two daughters, Bonnie Williams, Eatonton, Rhonda Braswell, Eatonton; sister: Patty Phillips, Atlanta; nephew, Steve Braswell of Atlanta. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of final arrangements.

Rufus “Jack” Clark
Rufus “Jack” Clark, 70, of Eatonton, Ga. died Friday, April 29, 2005. Born June 22, 1934, Mr. Clark will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a resident of Duluth/Norcross, Ga. for 60 years and Eatonton, Ga. for 10 years. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 1st at 4 p.m. at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home in Norcross with the Rev. Chris Coggins officiating. Interment followed at Peachtree Memorial Park. Mr. Clark, a veteran of the U.S. Army, retired from Atlanta Motor Lines after 22 years of service and was a member of Norcross First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Louise Ivy Clark, married for 49 years; three children, son, David J. Clark, wife, Lu, grandson, Joseph of Stockbridge, Ga., son, Tim L. Clark, wife, Peggy, granddaughter, Mary Kathryn of Eatonton, daughter, Tonya C. Epps, fiancé, Mike Whitfield, grandsons, T.J. and Justin of Eatonton; brother, Ralph Clark of Hoschton; sister, Doris House of Duluth; sister, Pat Stiles of Buford; several nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were the Atlanta Motor Lines employees. Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home, 5051 Peachtree Ind. Blvd., Norcross was in charge of final arrangements. Johnnie A. Harrison
Funeral services for Mr. Johnnie A. Harrison, age 86, were held Saturday afternoon, April 23, who passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2005 in a Decatur health care facility. Services were held at St. John AME Church with the Rev. Dr. R.L. Bass, pastor officiating. Burial was followed in the East Eatonton Cemetery. Mr. Harrison, a native and life long resident of Putnam County, attended Putnam County School and later joined the Navy during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart before returning home, and became a licensed brick mason. He was better known as Jasper Harrison. He was a member of St. John AME Church, American Legion Post 583 and Masonic Lodge # 170. Survivors include: daughters, Mrs. Bernice Little and Mrs. Virginia Tanner of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Mr. Johnny F. Harrison (Mary) of Atlanta; brothers, George Harrison of Detroit, Michigan, and Mr. Herman Harrison (Doris) of Cleveland, Ohio; ten grandchildren; eighteen great- grandchildren; five great, great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Flower ladies were family and friends. Honorary pallbearers were the members of American Legion Post 583. Pallbearers were member of Masonic Lodge # 170. Hurt & Redd Funeral Home of Eatonton were in charge of final arrangements.

E. J. Lundy, Jr.
Funeral services for E. J. Lundy, Jr., 72, who died Friday, April 29, were held Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Milledgeville. Interment was at Baldwin Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jerry Bradley officiated. A native of Baldwin County, Mr. Lundy had lived in Hancock County for the past 6 years. He was son of the late Elisha J. and Clemmie Johnson Lundy and a veteran of the United States Navy. A graduate of the University of Georgia and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, Mr. Lundy was a former head football coach at Baldwin County High School and volunteered as coach for John Milledge Academy girls varsity basketball. He was retired from Ga. Dept. of Corrections. Survivors include daughter, Karen (James B.) McGinnis of Dacula; son, Gregory E. (Sherri) Lundy of Suwanee; sisters, Jackie Dunn of Eatonton and Betty Ann Hardie of Orange Park, Fl.; brother, Raymond (Essie) Lundy of Eatonton; granddaughters, Lauren and Jennifer McGinnis of Dacula and Meghan Styus of Suwanee. Williams Funeral Home & Crematory of Milledgeville was in charge of final arrangements.

John Hammond Adams
John Hammond Adams, age 82, of 115 Dogwood Lane, Eatonton, died August 14, 2005 in Eatonton. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church on August 16 at 11:00 a.m., with Bill Kitchen officiating. Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Thompson, Carl Haizlip, Frank Newsome, Edge Farley, David Giddens, and Gene Adams. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Ralston, Johnny Davis and Ennis Lankford. Mr. Adams was born June 9, 1923 in Putnam County, the son of John Leroy Adams and Bertha Thomas. He served in the Navy from July 1943 to June 1946 and was self-employed as a certified public accountant. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eatonton and a former member of the Eatonton Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Adams of Eatonton; daughter, Sally Adams Wise and husband Danny of Clermont; and son, Fort Chenault Adams of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by a son, Shelton John Adams and a sister, Mary Thomas Adams. The family requested that memorials may be made to charity. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Carles Irene Davis Askew
Carles Irene Davis Askew, age 80, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Born in Robbinsville, North Carolina on January 2, 1925, she was one of seven children of the late Jacob Lee Davis and Isabella Arizona Queen Davis. She graduated from Eatonton High School and later married Thurston Starr Askew. Carles became a housewife, assisted her husband on the farm and was a seamstress. She was a member of Walker United Methodist Church of Greensboro. Mrs. Askew was an excellent cook and enjoyed growing flowers. Survivors include her husband, Thurston Starr Askew of Greensboro; four sons, Raymond Askew and wife Carol of Greensboro, Bill Askew and wife Joanne of Bishop, Allen Askew and wife Sandra of White Plains, and Horace Askew and wife Ann of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Donna Moon and husband Tommy, Ben Askew and wife Debbie, Kimberly Fisher and husband Gordon, Jonathan Askew and wife Katie, Jason Askew, Erica Askew and Luke Askew and three great-grandchildren, Brooke Moon, Ellie Askew and Abby Fisher and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three brother and three sisters, Charlie Davis, Walter Davis, Posey Davis, Faye Batchelor, Carrie Batchelor and Ruby Kasinski. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, August 16, at 2 p.m. at Walker Church Cemetery with the Rev. Rick Maeser and the Rev. Mike Marsingill officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Gene Askew, Wayne Taylor, Bobby Kimbrough, William Coleman, Louie Davis, Tom Towler, Carl Jackson, J.R. Davis, Bobby Brooks, Charles Webb and Blake Batchelor.
