George Edward Knight, age 74, of 109 Altama Ct., Eatonton, GA died Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton. Memorial services were held at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro on Wednesday, March 8 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. D. Geoffrey Taylor and the very Rev. John Via. The Pettsville, Penn. native was born on January 24, 1932. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He was a Foreign Service Officer for the State Department. He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Survivors include: wife, Colleen Knight, Eatonton; son, David Knight, Atlanta; daughter, Virginia Douglas of Colorado Springs; two brothers, Jack Knight, Pettsville, Penn., William Knight, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Justin Knight, Atlanta, Tyler Knight, Atlanta, Briana Douglas, Colorado Springs. Charlie James Mullens
Services for Charlie James Mullens, age 62, were held Sunday afternoon, March 5, who passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2006 in Putnam County. Services were held at Free Gift Baptist Church with the Rev. Lucious Solomon, pastor officiating and Apostle Regina Pennamon, Apostle Ronald Harden, Apostle Gus Kilgore, Jr., the Rev. J.W. Reid, Evangelist Marquettea Brooks, the Rev. Presley and others assisting. Burial was conducted in the Free Gift Church Cemetery. Mr. Mullens, a native and life-long resident of Putnam county, was the son of the late Tom and Essie Lee Mullens. He was well known as peanut to some and mook to others. He was a member of Hurts Chapel AME Church and Putnam Masonic Lodge # 170. Mr. Mullens was a long-time employee of Gregory Bridge, Inc. until his health began to fail. He was married more than 32 years to Eva Mae Hargrove. Survivors include: a loving wife, Eva Mullens; seven sons, Brian O’Neal Mullens of Eatonton, Charlie James Mullens, Jr. of Siloam, Calvin Mullens of Eatonton, Franklin Wright of Eatonton, Bennie (Angela) Jacksonof Boston, MA, Joseph Scott of Everette, WA, and Michael Scott of Milledgeville; six daughters, Evangelist Angela Faye (Geoffery) Dennis, Diane (Ronnie) Simmons, Audrey wright, Muretha (Leon) Hurt, Evangelist Lisa Jackson all of eatonton, and Lillie (Emcy) Thomas of Macon, three sisters; Leila Bell West of Macon, Daisy Reid and Ruby Mullens both of Eatonton, three brothers, Tommy Lee (Sally) Mullens of Macon, Joe Henry (Ola) Mullens of Ohio, a devoted mother-in-law; Ruby Barnes of Macon, three aunts, Mary “Nick” Mullens, Annie Mae Corbin, and Sara Odum all of Eatonton. Twenty-seven grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Charlie was preceded in death by one daughter Deborah Mullins. Glady Elizabeth Smith, age 47, of 249 Glenwood Springs Road, Eatonton, GA died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 after a brief illness. Funeral service were held at St. John AME Church on Saturday, March 4 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Ricky Lockhart. Interment was held at Eatonton City Cemetery. The Eatonton native was born May 18, 1958 to Rosell Williams and Everlean Waller. She was employed as a seamstress with Horton Homes. She was educated in the Putnam County School and was a member of St. John AME Church. Survivors include: Everlean Waller, two sons, Terrance Williams, Victor Smith both of Eatonton; daughter, Stacy Smith; four brothers, Gus Davis, Jr., Rosell Williams, Jr., Hal Williams, Victor Williams; two sisters, Juanita Holder, Mary Williams. Larry Eugene Gorley
Larry Eugene Gorley, age 56, of 606 South Jefferson Avenue, Eatonton, GA died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at this home. Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Thursday, March 2 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Matthew Dennis, Jr. officiating. Interment will be held at East Eatonton City Cemetery. The Eatonton native was born March 18, 1949 to the late Robert Gorley, Sr. and Elizabeth Nash Gorley of Eatonton. He served his country in the United States Navy, he was a disabled veteran, educated in Putnam County School and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Survivors include: daughter, Larrice Gorley Wilson of Carrolton; mother, Elizabeth Nash Gorley; brother, James Gorley of Eatonton; three sisters: Leila Gorley Williams of Eatonton, Frances Gorley Lowe of California, Sarah Gorley Abrams of Eatonton; one grandchild. Georgia Mae Green, age 75, of 507 Walnut Street, Eatonton, GA died Friday, February 24, 2006 at Hospice Atlanta. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. R.B. Bass officiating. Interment was held at Eatonton City Cemetery. The Eatonton native was born February 5, 1931 to the late Moses Cain, Sr. and the late Emma Milner. She was educated in the Putnam County schools and was a member of St. John AME Church. Survivors include: son, Willie Green, Jr. (Margaret) of Lithonia; daughter, Lillie Holt. Services for Louvenia Mathis Parham, age 73, were held Thursday afternoon, February 23 who passed away Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. Services were held at Clements Chapel Methodist Church (formerly Cross Road AME) with Evangelist Mamie Sadler Caldwell, pastor officiating with the Rev. Fred Perrimas, Pastor George Utuk, the Rev. Michael Stavill, Evangelist Oris Farley and Minister Jewell Farrar assisting. Burial was conducted in the East Eatonton Cemetery in Eatonton. Mrs. Parham was a native and life-long resident of Putnam County. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Robert Parham, Sr. and the two shared a marriage of over fifty years. She was a faithful life-long member of Cross Road AME Church, now Clements Chapel Methodist Church, Eatonton, GA. She was a member of senior choir and supportive of other church activities. Mrs. Parham leaves to cherish blessed memories: her loving husband, Robert Parham, Sr.; five devoted children, Frances Thornton of Charlotte, North Carolina, Patricia Perrett of Kernersville, North Carolina, Robert (Sandra) Parham, Jr., Clyde Parham and Brenda (Ferdinand, Sr.) Farley, all of Eatonton; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Parham of Eatonton; one son-in-law Ferdinand Farley, Sr. of Eatonton. Addie J. (Missy) Reese, age 76, of 363 Oconee Street, Eatonton, GA died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Funeral services were held at Greater Bell Chapel Baptist Church on Monday, February 20 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gregory Ellison officiating. Interment was held at Greater Bell Chapel Church Cemetery. The Eatonton native was born June 12, 1929 to the late Rufus Dennis and the late Lula Harden. She was educated in the Putnam County schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Bells Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include: husband, Joseph Reese, Sr.; nine children, Christine Harden (Russell) of Eatonton, Julia Bynes (Joseph) of NY, Joseph Reese, Jr. (Dorothy), Elaine Reese, William Reese (Linda), Stella Brown (James), Johnny Reese (Lucille), Michael Reese (Janie), Patricia Macon (Raymond) all of Eatonton; one sister, Willie Mae Humphries of Eatonton; three sisters-in-law, Gussie Mae Waller of Eatonton, Eurie Harden and Mildred Harden, both of Cleveland, OH, 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild. Wayne Robertson, of 120 Medical Acres Blvd., Eatonton, GA died Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were held at Jones Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, February 25 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Eddie L. Presley officiating. Interment was held at St. Luke AME Cemetery. The Eatonton native was born on November 29, 1952 to the late Charles L. Robertson and the late Ruth H. Robertson. He was a Boiler Operator at Rayonier Wood Products, he was educated at E.E. Butler School in Gainesville. He was a member of Jones Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include: daughter, Sheila L. Robertson; mother, Ruth H. Robertson; three sisters, Sarah Robertson Daniels, Sarita Robertson, both of Eatonton; Peggy Davenport of Atlanta; four brothers, Arlington Robertson, Allen Robertson, both of Eatonton, Anthony Robertson of Gainesville and Charles Robertson of San Diego, California. Joseph J. Tusa
Joseph J. Tusa, age 88, passed away Monday, February 20, 2006 at his residence after a short fight with cancer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, moved to Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; Ford Lauderdale, Florida; Grafton, Ohio; Greensboro, Georgia and recently to Lakewood Ranch in Bradenton, Florida. His last 24 years before retirement in 1988, he was in insurance and real estate having offices in three states. He enjoyed golf, travel, cooking and entertaining. Survivors include: his wife, Veletta Jean (Stitak); two daughters; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Doris E. (nee Thompson), his parents Albert J. and Helen R. Tusa (nee Garippo); brother, Michael and sister Rosa Tusa Vassilev. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 27 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4595 Bayview Drive, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Sue Thompson Smith

Mrs. Sue Thompson Smith of Greensboro, Georgia died Sunday, February 19, 2006 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born January 9, 1922 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin H. Thompson of Greensboro, GA and was the widow of the late John A. “Red” Smith also of Greensboro, GA. Sue attended the Women’s College of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia. She was a devoted Bulldog fan and rarely missed a UGA football Game. After college graduation Sue taught school for a year in Greensboro. Following World War II and the return of her husband “Red” Smith, Sue and Red moved to Eatonton, GA where they devoted their life to the Putnam County Community. Sue taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Eatonton United Methodist Church. She and Red worked hard to create the Putnam County Dairy Festival and the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Sue was an entrepreneur and started her own in-home kindergarten that is fondly remembered by many. She started two retail businesses in antiques and sporting goods. She was a successful published author of her book Child of the Depression. For a number of years she was a volunteer at the UGA Botanical Gardens in Athens. In her later life, she returned to her home place in Greensboro where she was a landowner and timber farmer and continued her support and involvement in a number of organizations. Sue is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter: daughter Marilyn Gregory (husband Buster)of Covington, GA and their sons, Jeb Gregory (wife Amy) of Watkinsville, GA and Joel Gregory (wife Laurel) of Monroe; daughter Kyle Smith (husband Cecil) and their sons Calvin Smith of Oxford, Mississippi and Cale Smith of Sylvania, GA; son John Smith (wife Hilda) of Jacksonville, FL and their children John Smith of Orlando, FL, Mathew Smith of Jacksonville, Kelsey Smith of Gainesville, FL and Susan Smith of Jacksonville; and great-granddaughter and daughter of Jeb and Amy, Riley Ann Gregory of Watkinsville, GA. She was a faithful member of Walker United Methodist Church where she has requested in lieu of flowers memorial donations be given. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Sue’s life at 2 pm, Saturday, Feb 25 at Walker United Methodist Church, Greensboro, GA.
Virginia L. Douglas
Virginia L. Douglas, age 89, of Johnson Blvd., Murray, KY died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at West View Nursing Home in Murray, KY. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. at The J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda McKnight officiating. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lexington, TN at 1 p.m. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Methodist Church in Murray, KY. There she was a member of the Friendship Gleaners Sunday School Class. Mrs. Douglas was born in Milan, TN on October 27, 1916 to Julian Thomas Pierce and Essie Valeria Lessenberry Pierce. She was married to the late Robert H. Douglas. Survivors include: daughter, Julia Davis and husband Harry of Eatonton; sister, Mary McLeaish and husband John of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law, Kate Pierce of Albuquerque, NM;, also several nieces and nephews. Evelyn Hall Glover, age 97, of Eatonton, GA died Friday, February 17, 2006 at Morgan Memorial Hospital in Madison. Funeral services were held at Central Methodist Church on Sunday, February 19 at 2 p.m. with pastor Talmadge Holder officiating. Interment followed at Central Methodist Church Cemetery. The Putnam County native was born April 28, 1908 to Weldon Goss Hall and Mamie Lecroy Hall, she was married to Charles Glover. She was a homemaker and a member of Central Methodist Church. Sue Griffith, age 41, of Milledgeville, died Tuesday, February 14, 2006. Graveside services for Ms. Griffith were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 17, at Center Hill Baptist Church in Monroe, with the Rev. Gary Day officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to defray funeral expenses. She was the daughter of the late Robert Leon and Grace Starnes Griffith. A member of Centennial Baptist Church in Rutledge, Ms. Griffith loved her family, movies, reading, and writing poetry. Funeral services for Lillie Mae Hurt-Horne, age 85, were held Wednesday afternoon, February 15, who passed away Friday, February 10, 2006 at her resident. Services were held at the Free Gift Baptist Church with the Rev. Lucious Solomon, pastor, officiating and the Rev. W.J. Reid of Springfield Madison, Ga. assisting. Burial was conducted in the Free Gift Church Cemetery in Eatonton. Mrs. Hurt-Horn was a native and lifelong resident of Putnam County. As a child she was educated at Free Gift Baptist School where she also attended church services. In 1940, Lillie was joined in holy matrimony to the late James E. Horne, Sr. During Ms. Lillie’s long and glory-filled life, she touched so many people in so many ways. Survivors include: son, Ernest Horne of Eatonton; two sisters, Willie Bell Evans and Annie Lucy Johnson of Eatonton; seven grandchildren, Claymond Horne, Ernest Horne, Jr., Renita Horne, Shannon Horne, Roderick Horne, Darryl Reid, Cano Slappy; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Nora Bell McDaniel Maddox
Funeral services for Nora Bell McDaniel Maddox, age 65, were held Saturday, February 18, who passed away on Monday, February 13, 2006 at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville. Services were held at New Enon Baptist Church in Morgan County with the Rev. Albert Baker, pastor, officiating. Burial was conducted in the East Eatonton Cemetery in Eatonton, Ga. Mrs. Maddox was a native of Putnam County. She received her education also in Putnam County. She was a former employee of Stanley Tools, and was presently employed by the Putnam County Board of Education. Mrs. Maddox accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and joined New Enon Baptist Church. Mrs. Maddox was united in holy matrimony December 10, 1059, to the late Robert Lee Maddox. To the union five children were born. Survivors include: three son, Michael Maddox of Eatonton, Senior Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force Terry Maddox (Adelita) of Shaw AFB, South Carolina, and Lamar Maddox (Brandiese) of Warner Robins, Georgia; two daughters, Sandie Moreland (Calvin) and Glenda Maddox, both of Eatonton; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Sania (NaNa) and Alexia Bailey; one goddaughter, Monia of Covington and a host of other relatives and friends. Martha Margaret Parham, age 71, of 116 Boundry Drive, Eatonton, GA, died Saturday, February 18, 2006 at her residence. Funeral services were held at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel on Monday, February 20 at 2 p.m. The Putnam County native was born November 18, 1934 to Rufus Fowler and Annie Mae Latham, she was married to the late Ernest Parham. She was a homemaker. John Harris Simpson, Jr.
John Harris Simpson, Jr., age 90, formerly of Eatonton, GA died Friday, February 17, 2006 in Mesa, AZ. Graveside service will be held at Eatonton Memorial Park, time and date will be announced in the near future. The Millen, Jenkins County, GA native was born November 8, 1915 to John Harris Simpson, Sr. and Janie Candler. He was married to the late Doris Wallace Simpson. He had been with his sister in Mesa, AZ for the last four years. He was the former owner of the Gulf Station in Eatonton, was a retired insurance salesman and was also employed with the Georgia State Highway Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Mason. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Survivors include: sister, Jane Smith of Mesa, Arizona; brother, Wimberly Simpson of Phoenix, Arizona and several devoted nieces and one nephew. Dorothy Wright Horvath, age 92 of Canal Winchester, Ohio died on Monday, February 13, 2006 at her daughter’s home in Eatonton, Ga. A celebration of life service will be held at the Dwayne Spence Funeral Home in canal Winchester, Ohio on Sunday, February 19th, at 2 p.m. Private burial will be at the Carroll Cemetery. She was born Dorothy Helen White in Carroll, Ohio on March 7, 1913 to the late William and Sarah White and was the youngest of nine children. She married Home Wright on December 27, 1936 and celebrated 42 years of marriage before his death in 1978. She also celebrated a second marriage of 14 years with Alex Horvath who passed away in 2000. Dorothy will be remembered for her active life with her many friends and family. Her early life was spent in the rural farm community, while in later life she very much enjoyed her times at the Senior Center. She devoted some 60 years working on the local election board. Funeral services for Marian Cutler, age 71, were held Wednesday, February 8, who passed away unexpected at her resident Wednesday, February 1, 2006. Services were held at St. John AME Church with the Rev. Dr. R.B. Bass, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Hope Smith Jackson assisting. Ms. Cutler was a native of Columbia, South Carolina, where she finished high school and later attended another institution in Sumter, South Carolina, to further her education. She practiced cosmetology for a number of years before returning to college to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in South Carolina. She taught second grade at Butler-Baker Elementary School. During that time she continued her education, returning to college to earn a degree in Master of Science in Education from Atlanta University. She taught special education classes at Putnam County High School for many years until she retired after thirty years of service in the Putnam County school system. She also had a great love for her animals.
