Joe Pinson Foster, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 at his residence in Clayton. A native of Jackson County, Foster was born Dec. 16, 1934 to the late Bob and Effie T. Pinson. He was the former owner of Pinson Trucking. Surviving are his wife Darlene Pinson of Clayton; one son, Steven Pinson of Greensboro; three daughters, Charlotte Culberson of Eatonton, Vickie Thompson of Rutledge and Belinda Pritchett of Winterville; four sisters, Leavern Brown and Martha Pearson of Rutledge, Neta Peppers of Madison and Sandra Willoughby of Hull; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Josephine T. Argo Godbolt
ANDERSON, S.C. – Josephine Teasley Argo Godbolt, 88, of 311 Simpson Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born Aug. 14, 1918 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late J.I. and Nancy Brown Teasley. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church. Surviving are her two daughters Cynthia Gantt of Columbus, Ind. and Jayne Faust of Ft. Myers, Fla.; son, Joe Argo of Anderson, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Edwin Teasley of Easley and J.I. Teasley, Jr. of Augusta. She was twice widowed, first to the late Talmadge Argo and second to the late Herbert Godbolt. In addition to her parents and husbands, a daughter Elaine Swinehart preceded her in death. Funeral services were Saturday Feb. 3 at Sullivan-King Mortuary with the Revs. Joe Argo and Dr. Don Cox officiating. Graveside services were also held Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens with the Revs. Joe Argo and Bill Kitchens officiating. Roland Ernest Sills Jr.
Roland Ernest Sills Jr., 76, of 125 Sparta Highway in Eatonton, died Feb. 1, 2007 at Eatonton Health Care Center. A memorial service was held Feb. 3 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Rev. Mike Willard and Dudley Horton officiating. Sills was born in Atlanta on Dec. 17, 1930 to Roland Ernest Sills Sr. and Ruby Brown. He moved to Eatonton as a child and graduated from the old Eatonton High School. He graduated from ABAC and The University of Georgia as a dairy manufacturing major. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1953 during the Korean War. He worked as a line manager at Horton Homes and was a member of VFW Post 6686. He is survived by three sons, Howard Sills of Eatonton, Ted Sills of Eatonton, and Carter Sills of Calhoun; one daughter, Beth Bridges of Eatonton; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Brandon T. Welch
EATONTON – Brandon Thomas Welch, 14, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. A native of Greensboro, Welch made his home in Baldwin County and Putnam County. He was a student at Putnam County Middle School. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Chapel. Hugh Moreland Walton
Hugh Moreland Walton Jr., 80, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007. At his request, his body has been cremated. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at 174 Gregory Lane in Eatonton. He is survived by his wife, Sara Jo Walton; son, Joe Walton; daughters, Susan Remaley and Jane Williams; grandchildren Jennifer, Elliot, Melissa, Ashley; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Donald Walton of Grayson. Moreland grew up in Pine Mountain Valley and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Sara Jo Cotten in 1948 and moved to Atlanta with his family. He retired from Emory University in 1988 and moved to Putnam County, where he enjoyed his love of the outdoors and working his farm.
Bowman
Elizabeth Thornton Bowman, 62, died Jan. 25, 2007. Services were held Jan. 29 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Milledgeville with Father Don Caron officiating. Bowman was a native of Elberton but had made her home in Milledgeville. She was a retired unit director at Central State Hospital. She was a graduate of Georgia College & State University. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband Walter Bowman of Milledgeville; a son, Cliff Collins III of Eatonton; two sisters, Libby Copelan and Ginger Collins, both of Eatonton; a brother, Thomas William Thornton of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, Kacee Copelan, Cody Copelan, Samantha Collins, Jessica Collins and Levi Collins. James Leon Land, 77, of 125 Sparta Hwy. in Eatonton, died Jan. 26, 2007. Visitation was held Jan. 29 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton. Funeral services were held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin on Jan. 30 and were officiated by David Primm. Land was born in 1929 to James Leon Land and Mamie Louise Sheppard in Walker Valley, Miss. He is survived by four daughters, Sharon L. Johnson of Eatonton, Sherry M. Jones of Juliette, Raturah Rogers of Fort Valley and Tina Louise Land of South Carolina; one son, Terry L. Land of Gray; two brothers, William T. Land of Virginia, and Melvin Land; a sister, Lucille L. McDonald of California; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Thomas Jackson
Thomas Jackson Sr. departed this earthly life on Jan. 10, 2007. He was born on Feb. 4, 1916 in Putnam County to Will and Georgia Jackson, who both preceded him in death. He attended school in Putnam County. He joined Hunts Chapel A.M.E. Church on Feb. 8, 2004. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Lucille Jackson. To this union six children were born; five sons and one daughter. Preceding him in death were three sons: Eugene, Thomas Jr., and Freddie James Lawson. He leaves to mourn his passing: Loving and devoted daughter, Venetia (William) Waller; Two adopted daughters, Essie Mae Lawson and Lena Brown all of Eatonton; sons, Willie Frank (Karen) Jackson and Leroy Jackson of Eatonton, Jerry (Helen) Jackson of Decatur; daughter-in- law, Mary Julia Jackson of Eatonton; sister-in-law, Verlie Mae Thompkins; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 13 at Hunts Chapel A.M.E. Church in Eatonton with the Rev. John S. Norfleet, presiding. Pallbearers included Jackson’s grandsons and flower bearers included his granddaughters and nieces.
Timothy Reynolds
Timothy Wade Reynolds, 46, of 202 Tecumseh Ave. in Eatonton, died Jan. 16, 2007. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel. Burial took place at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens. Reynolds was born in Plant City, Fla., on June 19, 1960 to John and Martha Harrell Reynolds. He worked as a contractor. He is survived by his wife, Viola Reynolds of Eatonton; two sons, Jess Reynolds of Belgium, France, and Jason Lowery of Eatonton; three daughters, Starla Reynolds of Athens, Crystal Reynolds of Atlanta, and Paige Reynolds; two sisters, Dianne Malcom of Madison, and Sue Padgett of Eatonton; a brother, Danny Reynolds of Madison; and his parents, John and Martha Reynolds of Eatonton. Frank vozzolo
Frank Vozzolo Jr., 74, of Milledgeville, died Jan. 6, 2006. Vozzolo was a native of Connecticut. He retired from Grumman in 1992 after 30 years of service. He was the widower of Madelyn Phillips Vozzolo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War. He was also an active member of the Milledgeville Bowling League for many years. He is survived by three sons, Kenneth Vozzolo of California, Keith Vozzolo of California, and Frank Vozzolo III of Eatonton; a daughter, Rachel Marie Vozzolo of Macon; and a granddaughter, Alexa Brooke Vozzolo of Jupiter, Fla. Rosa Layfield
Rosa Nell Batchelor Layfield, 90, died Jan. 12, 2007. Services were held Jan. 14 at the McIntyre Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Born Aug. 13, 1916, Layfield was a native of Jasper County but had made her home in Milledgeville since 1948. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles M. “Charlie” Layfield. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, loving sister, aunt and a friend to all. Survivors include her children; Barbara Vining (Glenn) of Tallulah Falls, Elizabeth Colson (Joe) of Savannah, Ruby Griffin (Bobby) of Ivey, Lollie Peavy and Susan Finch (Charles) all of Milledgeville, Linda Minter (Grady) of Eatonton, a sister Lynn Stuart of Forsyth, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Margaret Patricia King, 66, of Robin Court, died Jan.12, 2007, in an Atlanta-area hospital. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Jan. 15 in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. Burial will be private. King was born in Montreal, Canada, on May 22, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Hannah Patton, had attended business school in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was a homemaker and had lived at Lake Sinclair for the past 20 years. King is survived by her husband Michael King of Lake Sinclair; daughters, Lorraine Stark of Russell, Kan., and Sandy Price of Warner Robins; granddaughters, Sommer Acheson and Kayci Price; great-grandchildren, Joshua Acheson and Taylen Acheson; and by a brother, Ronald Patton of London, Ontario, Canada. Mary Bullock
Mary Belle Cantrell Bullock, 57, of Penfield, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007. She was born March 17, 1949 in Morgan County to the late Thomas Albert Cantrell Sr. and Hilda Maude Mullins Cantrell, both natives of Penfield. She graduated from Greene County High School in 1967. A homemaker who lived in Greene County all her life, she was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed watching television, putting together puzzles, doing art work and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bonnie Bea Bullock, in 2000. Survivors include a cousin and caretaker, Connie Wood and husband Ronnie of Penfield; brother Thomas Albert Cantrell Jr. of West Columbia, S.C.; niece and nephews, Laurie Ranger, Derek and Anson Cantrell; great-nieces and nephews, Boston Ranger, Aidan, Aly, Dagon and Kayla Cantrell; and a number of other relatives and friends. Benjamin Herschel Cannon Jr., 83, of 401 Oak Way in Eatonton, died on Jan. 3, 2007 at Eatonton Health Care. Cannon was born in Twiggs County on Oct. 30, 1923 to Benjamin H. Cannon Sr. and Mary Frances Duncan. He worked at Enterprise Aluminum as a line worker and was a member of Marshal Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Myrtle Cannon of Eatonton; two daughters, Talethia Mason of Macon, and Judy Reeves of Griffin; three sisters, Ann Roberson of Dexter, Jewell Young of Dexter, and Laverne Pinnell of Macon; two brothers, Bill Cannon of Dexter, and Virgil Cannon of Byron; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Marshal Memorial with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. Burial took place at Providence Baptist Church cemetery in Shady Dale. Davis
James Paul Davis Sr., 66, of Eatonton, died Jan. 3, 2007 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle. Born in Fulton County on Dec. 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Paul Horace and Mary Nell Hunt Davis. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Atlanta. He moved to the lake area three years ago and worked as a car salesman for Lake Oconee Chevrolet in Greensboro. Survivors include his wife, Norma Dean Davis of Eatonton; a daughter, Wendy Davis and husband Mike of Panama City, Fla; two sons, James Paul Davis Jr. and wife Carolyn of Eatonton, and Ricky Gerald Davis and wife Robyn of Fayetteville; five grandchildren, Christy Cramer, Courtney, Amanda, Brittany and Tiffany Davis; three great-grandchildren, Julie, Jeffrey and Jordan Cramer; and many other relatives and friends. Farley
James Ernest Farley Jr., known to many as Ernest, was born Sept. 6, 1933 in Putnam County to the late James Ernest Farley Sr. and Thelma Andrews Farley. The Lord called him to glory after a brief illness on Jan. 5, 2007. He was educated in Putnam County and retired from Enterprise Aluminum Co. after the plant closed. Farley loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He was united in holy matrimony to Catherine Harris and to this union, eight children were born. Funeral services were held Jan. 10 at Union Baptist Church, 240 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Eatonton, where Elder Jesse Porter is the pastor. The Rev. Ricky Lockhard officiated. Burial was in East Eatonton City Cemetery. Howard Harp Harris Jr., 60, of 220 Spring Creek Lane in Atlanta, died Jan. 7, 2007 at Putnam General Hospital. Harris was born on Dec. 14, 1946 in Atlanta to Howard Harris Sr. and Florence Miller. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1971 and later worked in business administration at Wachovia Bank. He was a member of the Sandy Springs Lion’s Club. Harris is survived by two sisters, Beverly Ann Mann of Eatonton, and Carolyn V. Gaines of Bonair; and a brother, John C. Harris of Douglasville. Funeral services were held Jan. 10 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Rev. Rick Zeller officiating. The burial took place at Crestlawn Memorial Garden in Atlanta. Eugene Frederick Herring, 76, of 260-A Greensboro Road in Eatonton, died Jan. 7, 2007 at his residence. Herring was born on Feb. 20, 1930 in Putnam County to Emmett P. Herring. He worked as a self- employed carpenter and was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Annette Herring of Eatonton; two daughters, Peggy Cooper of Moultrie and Betty Harper of Eatonton; two sons, Randy Huff of Eatonton and Bubba Herring of Eatonton; a special daughter-in-law, Jeanette Herring of Eatonton; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 9 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel. The burial took place at Wesley Chapel Church cemetery. Allen Webster Layson Sr., 75, died Jan. 5, 2007 at his residence in Reform, Ala. Layson was born Dec. 16, 1931 in Eatonton to the late Horace Augustus Layson and Allie Mae Gearhart Layson. He was a University of Georgia graduate with a bachelors of science degree, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of the Reform First United Methodist Church. He was a former employee with Bo Waters Paper Corporation for 13 years, Weyerhaeuser for 17 years and served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 20 years. Layson was best known as a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved helping people, his church family and community. He had a special love for community libraries and members of the area volunteer fire departments. Those who knew him well would say they loved his colorful stories and were blessed by his generous heart. Layson is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, H.A. Layson, Wink Layson and Frank Layson; and sister, Lillian Atwood. Survivors include his loving wife, JoAnn K. Layson of Reform, Ala.; daughter, Kim Layson Ambrose (Bill) of Reform, Ala.; sons, Michael Jerome Layson (Renate) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., James Bryant Layson (Donna) of Opelika, Ala., Butch Layson (Diana) of Calhoun, and Allen Webster Layson Jr. (Kathleen) of Decatur; brothers, Van Layson (Gertie) of Eatonton, and Addison Layson (Connie) of Calhoun; sisters, Janie Layson Little (Winfred) of Eatonton, and Eleanor Layson Sirmons of Hawkinsville; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friend Minton Mullenix.
