Jackie Hurt
Jackie Hurt, 63, died June 23, 2007 at his residence in New York. Hurt, a native of Baldwin County, attended school in Milledgeville. After graduating from high school he joined the US Army as well as attended Suffolk Community College in Selden, NY. On June 10, 1962 he married Frances Hogan of Milledgeville. For 32 years, he worked for the State of New York as a health aide at the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in West Brentwood, NY. He was also employed with the Central Islip Psychiatric Center and the Kings Park Psychiatric Center. He retired from Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in 1997, but continued to work part-time at the center’s transitional residential communities. Hurt was also a self-employed contractor and owner of Spectrum Painting and Spackling. He joined First Baptist Church of Bay Shore in 1967, where he was chairperson of the church’s revitalization committee and a member of the Angelic choir before becoming a member of the Deacon Board where he served until his death. He was a past member of the church’s scholarship committee and a former assistant director of the church’s Baptist Training Union. A civic leader, Hurt served on the board of directors of the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership Housing Development Fund Company. He is survived by his wife Frances; his daughter, Taundra of Long Island, NY; and his son and daughter-in-law Byron and Kenya of Plainfield, NJ; four brothers, Hurdy Jr., Larry, Danny and Tony; one sister, Evelyn Owens; his father-in-law, James Hogan Sr.; five brothers-in-law; James, William, Robert, Walter and Ronald and six sisters-in-law; Carol, Ada, Mary, Izola, Gloria and Linda. Grave side services were held on July 2 at Bone Cemetery in Milledgeville, with Pastor Emory Austin officiating. Hurt Funeral Services of Eatonton and Milledgeville were in charge of arrangements.
William L. Parsons
William Leonard “Lynn” Parsons, 86, of Gregory Lane in Eatonton, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at his residence. A native of Clay County, Ala., he was born March 3, 1921 to Edward Parsons and Susan Hughes. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins. He was a member of Crooked Creek Fire Department, National Association of Retired Employees and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of Manley Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include Randy and Paula Parsons of Eatonton; Michael and Mary Lou Parsons of Danville; and sister Lorrina Hays. Funeral service was held Thursday, June 28 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with Dr. Harry Michael officiating. Interment followed in Baldwin Memorial Gardens. Essie M. Farley
Essie Mae Farley, 84, of Eatonton, died June 27, 2007. A native of Putnam County, she was born Aug. 8, 1922. She received her education in Putnam County church schools. She had a passion for growing flowers, cooking and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Farley Sr., and two sons, Wiley Farley Jr. and Freddie Farley. Survivors include four grandchildren, Wiley Farley III and Freddie Farley Jr. of Eatonton, Bill Farley of Atlanta and Essie Mae Farley of Corpus Christi, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Nureek Farley and Donald Griffin of Carrollton, Ayonna Ariel Hal and Ashley Lashanna Hale of Atlanta, and Santisha Jakeia Ellison of Eatonton; three brothers-in-law, Sam Farley and wife Elbulah and Albert Farley and wife Lauvenia, all of Eatonton, and Willie Farley of Connecticut; one sister-in- law, Mamie Farley of Macon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 3 at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Eatonton with Elder H. Williams officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Shirley L. Coker
Shirley Lamb Coker, 67, of Eatonton and formerly of Rabun County, died, Friday, June 29, 2007 at Macon Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 28, 1939 in Rabun County to the late Paul Henry and Daisey Burrell Lamb. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of 50 years Charles Dewitt Coker of Eatonton; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Scott Coker of Acworth, Robert and Maria Coker of Orlando, Fla., and James Coker of Stockbridge; three daughters, Wanda Heinrich of Stockbridge, Kay Coody of Quitman and Kim Haynes of McDonough; nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Susan, Tia, Christie, Gemma, Josh, Elliott, Ethan and Elise; six great-grandchildren, Gracelynn, Conner, Hunter, Violet, Kayla, and Caden with another blessing due in a few months Lilyana; one brother, Buddy Lamb of Eatonton; and one sister, Barbara Kellum of Winder. Betty J. Cook
Betty Jo Chandler Cook, 70, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at her residence in Eatonton. Born July 9, 1936 in Oglethorpe County, she was the daughter of Samuel Jefferson Chandler and Nannie Lee Aaron Chandler. On Jan. 11, 1957, she married Robert M. Cook in Twiggs County. They made Eatonton their home for the past 30 years after moving there from Fruitland Park, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jefferson Chandler Jr. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Robert Cook of Eatonton; children, Dr. Robert D. Cook and wife Sherry of Davisboro, Dee Anne Cook Baldwin and husband Ralph of Clermont and Angela Dawn Cook of Eatonton; sisters, Salle Mae Chandler Gordon and husband Douglas of Danielsville and Lillian Carolyn Chandler Duke and husband Johnny of Bogart; and grandchildren, David Andrew Moss and wife Heather and Brian Derik Moss of Lawrenceville, and Joshua Adam Barefield of Davisboro. Patricia E. Wells, 48, of Crooked Creek Road in Eatonton, died Monday, July 2, 2007 at her residence. A native of Bibb County, she was a daughter of John and Emma Spivey and a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Wells of Eatonton; daughter, Dianna Wells of Eatonton; and granddaughter, Amanda Lee Cargile of Eatonton. Ruth H. Thompson
Ruth H. Thompson, 85, of 8554 D Harmony Road in Eatonton, died July 5, 2007 at Eatonton Health and Rehabilitation. Grave side services took place on July 10 at 1 p.m. at Westview Cemetery. Thompson was born in Atlanta on Sept. 26, 1921 to John Walter Housworth and Willie Mae Goddard. She was married to the Rev. Richard Thompson. Thompson was survived by two daughters; Pam Street of Eatonton and Diane Bloodworth of Sequim, WA.; and one sister Nellie Chaney of Lake Lanier. David L. Wise Sr.
David L. Wise Sr., 69, of 155 Hillside Apartments #134 in Eatonton, died July 6, 2007 at Athens Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held at Ivy Hill Chapel on July 11, with the Rev. Craig Arrington officiating. Wise was born on Dec. 27, 1937 in Akron, Ohio to Charles Wise Sr. and Mary Webber. He served in the US Navy from 1955-57. Survivors include his wife Juanette Wise; children David Wise Jr. of Imperial, CA, Cindy Goodman of Florence, AL, Mary Milici of Bishop, CA, Julia Johnson of Atlanta, TX, Shane McKnight of Rome, Chad McKnight of Nicholson and Jamie McKnight of Eatonton; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Ulysses Yarbrough
Ulysses Yarbrough, son of the late Willie Yarbrough and Annie Ruth Adams Yarbrough was born Jan. 19, 1948 in Eatonton. He graduated from Butler Baker High School in 1967. He was employed with Horton Homes in Eatonton for 23 years. He was married to the former Shirley Farley for 18 years. Yarbrough was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge #242 and the Headhunters Motorcycle Club. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Albert Yarbrough and Robert Yarbrough, III and one sister; Mamie Yarbrough. He is survived by his wife Shirley Yarbrough; three brothers; Vernell Adams (Marilyn) of Scotch Plains, NJ, Ted Yarbrough of Eatonton and James Yarbrough of Atlanta; three sisters; Willie Mae Baker of Atlanta, Mary McBride of Austell and Judy Warthen (Willie) of Eatonton; one aunt Ethel Melton of Cliftwood, NJ; three brothers-in-law; Sidney Farley (Lois) of Eatonton, Clarence Farley (Inez) of Monticello and Eddie Farley (Inatha) of Milledgeville; four sisters-in-law; Josie McMullen (Arthur), Ocie Reid and Darlene Styles (Victor) all of Eatonton and Ascelene Bailey (Johnny) of Lithonia; two God sons; Eldridge Yarbrough and Eric McMullen; special friends; Wade Waller, Sidney Nelson, Arthur McMullen and Sidney Burke and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Loraine Sauls Dumas
Loraine Sauls Dumas, age 79, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. Loraine Dumas was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Her parents were the late George Grover Sauls and Sara Grace Niblett Sauls. She was an active member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church and served as church treasurer for over 55 years. Dumas was a founding member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church’s outreach ministry. Her husband, Joseph Coleman Dumas, died in 1962. Dumas spent most of her career in the banking and insurance business on the square in Monticello. She was a founding parent of Piedmont Academy. After retirement, she loved working out with “the girls at the Eight Count” and friends at water aerobics. Her greatest joy came from helping people through the church ministry and Jasper County Care Corps. Brother Ted Sauls preceded her in death. She always called her grandsons “precious” and they loved it. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Susie Dumas of Macon and Scotty S. Dumas of Hillsboro; grandsons, Ben Dumas and Cole Dumas, both of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Bobby Sauls and James Sauls, both of Monticello; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held June 30 at Hillsboro Baptist Church with burial in Hillsboro Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. N.L. Bellury, the Rev. Steve Brock and the Rev. Bobby Sauls officiated. Ernest R. McDade
Ernest Rogers McDade, 67, of East Magnolia Street in Eatonton, died Saturday, June 9, 2007 at his residence. A native of Putnam County, he was born April 4, 1940, a son of Lawson J. McDade Sr. and Annie Lois Bruce. A veteran of the National Guard during the Vietnam War, he was married to Pat McDade. A former manager of VFW Post 6686 of Eatonton and Eatonton Elks Lodge, he was a past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge and honorary life-time member of Post 6686. Surviving are his wife, Pat McDade; four daughters, Marci and Mike Day of Eatonton, Sherri and David Batchelor of Eatonton, Karen and Randy Huff of Eatonton, Elaine Calhouna nd Eric Moore of Union Point; a sister, Lou Ellen and Carter Morgan of Cordele; two brothers, Lawson and Carolyn McDade of Eatonton, and Russell McDade of Eatonton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Robert G. Hardy Sr.
Robert G. Hardy Sr., 99, passes away on Sunday, June 10, 2007. Son of the late Thomas Franklin and Bertha Bryant Hardy, he was born in Zenith. He was a retired refrigeration engineer for Mrs. Filbert’s. He was an avid gardener, and he loved woodworking. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and had been a member of Circle S Hunting Club for 37 years. He was strong in his faith and a beloved member of Harvest Baptist Church in Eatonton. Survivors included his wife, Zelma P. Hardy of Milledgeville; son, Gene Hardy and wife Marcia of Hawkinsville; daughter Carol Bell and husband William of Lizella; son, Cliff Hardy and wife Joy of Lake Sinclair; daughter-in-law, Carole Hardy of Macon; brother, T.F. Hardy and wife Agnes of Perry; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth H. Brenda Kay Hand, 64, of Oconee Springs Road in Eatonton, died Thursday, June 7, 2007. Born in Spruce, N.C. on April 16, 1943, she was a daughter of Joseph L. Jarvis Jr. and Geneva Margie Pittman. A supervisor in the restaurant business, she was married to David Franklin Hand and a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, David Franklin Hand; brother Eddie Jarvis; and nieces and nephews. Funeral service was Friday, June 9 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Judson L. Haizlip
Judson Lee Haizlip, 49, of Round Oak, died Thursday, June 7, 2007, in Milledgeville. Haizlip was born in Jasper County and a lifelong resident of Round Oak. His parents were the late John Lee Haizlip and Annie Roberta Poole Haizlip. He was a member of Sunshine Methodist Church in Round Oak and Woodmen of the World organization. Judson was an engineering technician for Preston Testing and Engineering Company. Two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers and sister, Jack Haizlip and Mark Haizlip, both of Macon, Richard Haizlip of Millegeville, and Anne Jackson of Musella; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Sunshine Methodist Church in Round Oak. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery in Eatonton. The Rev. Tina Clark officiated. Alton D. Chalker Jr.
Alton Dewey Chalker Jr., 74, of Sparta Highway in Eatonton, died Thursday, May 31, 2007 at his residence. Born June 13, 1932 in Putnam County, he was a son of Alton D. Chalker Sr. and Ida Belle Redfern. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Marshall Memorial Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lottie E. Harper. Survivors include two sons, A.D. Chalker III of Eatonton, and J.D. Chalker and wife Angela of Eatonton; five grandchildren, Jesse and Katie Elizabeth Chalker, Suzette Chaffin, Jana Scott and Krissi Hulsey; and close family friend, Mackee Williams. Graveside service was held Friday, June 1 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Eatonton with the Rev. John McMillian Sr. officiating. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel of Eatonton was in charge of arrangements.
Sidney W. Kennedy Sr.
Sidney Williams Kennedy Sr., 81, died Sunday, May 27, 2007 at his home in Devereux. Graveside service was held Tuesday, May 29 at Reynolds Chapel Cemetery. A native and resident of Devereux, he was a retired carpenter foreman. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Elizabeth Williams Kennedy. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict earning three Bronze Stars. He answered his call to duty and served his country with honor. Survivors include his wife, Patricia M. Kennedy; two sons, Sid Kennedy Jr. and wife Gwen of Eatonton and Alan Kennedy and wife Verne of Sparta; and brother, Gerald “Red Top” Kennedy of Sparta. Glenwood Nelson
Glenwood Nelson, 79, died Friday, June 1, 2007. He was born Aug. 24, 1928 in Eatonton to Bishop and Fozzie Nelson, whom preceded him in death. He attended school at Bells Chapel Church. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Eva Julia Smith Nelson, and they had five children. He was no stranger to hard work, after 20 years of employment, he retired from Enterprise Aluminum Company. Glenwood never met a stranger. He had a passion for fishing and cooking barbecue. He attended Greater High Hope until his health began to fail. Survivors include one son, Lonnie Nelson; four daughters, Gloria Nelson and Brenda Nelson, both of Eatonton, Alaine (Donnell) Brundage of Milledgeville and Annie (Danny) Wells of Forth Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Ken Nelson and Jerel (Maranda) Nelson of Albuquerque, N.M., Shaqualia Clements, Erica Nelson, Ke’Aira Brundage, Danny (DJ) Wells and Daneshia Wells, both of Fort Worth, Texas; one great-grandchild, Kenyon Nelson; four sisters-in-law, Georgia Ragland and Willie Mae Ringer, both of Rome, Edna C. Reid of Atlanta and Virginia G. Harrison of Macon; six brothers-in-law, Lon Knight Gorley of Atlanta, Willie D. John H. Simpson Jr.
John Harris Simpson Jr., 90, died Feb. 17, 2007. A native of Millen in Jenkins County, he had live in Eatonton a number of years before moving to live with his sister in Mesa, Ariz. He was the son of the late John Harris and Janie Chandler Simpson. He was the widow of the late Doris Wallace Simpson. He was a retired insurance salesman, member of First Baptist Church and Eatonton Masonic Lodge member. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Craft. Survivors include his sister, Jane Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, Wimberly Simpson of Phoeniz, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 12 at Eatonton Memorial Park with the Rev. Larry Glover officiating. Thomas H. Trent Jr.
Thomas Henry Trent Jr., 78, of 414 N. Madison Ave. in Eatonton, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at Macon Medical Center. Born in Kentucky on May 21, 1929, he was a son of Thomas Henry Trent Sr. and Delphia Mae Hall. A U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean Conflict, he was a retired engineer and member of the United Methodist Church. He was a Shriner, member of the VFW and 32nd-degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Rose Hansford, and a daughter. Survivoring is a son, Thomas Trent. Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 29 at the Georgia Veterans Memorial. John G. Bourn
John Gregory Bourn, of Eatonton, died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at his residence. A private memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Instead, memorial contributions are to be made to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, Ga., 30025. Bourn, son of the late Charlie John and Frances Askin Bourn, was born in Atlanta and had lived in Eatonton since 2000. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War. Bourn was self-employed and a registered forester, having graduate from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and earning a degree in forestry. Survivors include his wife, Janice W. Bourn of Eatonton; sons, Charlie Bourn of Boise, Idaho and Danny Bourn of New York; sisters, Martha Wallace of Decatur, Ala., Sharli Blackburn of Alpharetta and Lynn Almand of Suwanee.
