Elizabeth S. Yarbrough, 79, died Sunday, May 13, 2007 in Sparta. A life-long resident of Hancock County, she was the second generation retired owner of Sparta Flower Shop and was the daughter of late Frank Stewart and late Jewell Hudson Stewart and widow of the late John Reese Yarbrough. Survivors include her daughters Ginger Johnson and Carolyn Brown, both of Sparta; her sister Marion Wilhoit of Warrenton; friend Dot Butts of Sparta; five grandchildren Brad (Janna) Waddell and Hollie (Dan) Haley of Eatonton, Brannon of Sparta, Brooke Brown of Milledgeville and Brant Brown of Statesboro; and grandchildren John Reese Waddell, Tanner Waddell, Reed Haley, Blake Haley and Hillary Haley, all of Eatonton. FREDERICK A. DOWNS
MACON – Frederick A. Downs, 79, died Thursday, May 3, 2007 at Coliseum Medical Center. Born March 16, 1928 in Junction City, he was a son of the late Pete F. Downs and the late Gordene Allred Downs. He graduated from Americus High School and worked for Central Georgia Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad, retiring after 47 years. He was a Mason and a member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder for many years, recently as an elder emeritus. He was preceded in death by his sister, Annette Downs Scott. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Joyce Tye Downs; his daughter, Linn Downs Brazil and husband Eric of Eatonton; grandchildren, Callie Brazil Lankford and husband Charles, and Kalen A. Brazil, all of Eatonton; brothers Lonnie Downs and wife Catherine of Americus, and Wayne Downs and wife Patty of Macon; sister, Gloria Downs Bush of Smiths, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Allen “Robbie” Williams, 63, of Grove Street in Eatonton, died unexpectedly Monday, April 30, 2007 at his residence. A Putnam County, he was born July 16, 1943 to Robert Elihu Williams and Janie Lunette Cumbie. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a retired city of Eatonton worker. Survivors include his mother, Janie Lunette Williams of Eatonton; brother, Jessie Williams of Eatonton; two sisters, Melanie Hice of Lawrenceville, and Connie Amos of Peachtree City. Roosevelt Williams
Roosevelt Williams, 62, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at his residence. A native and life-long resident of Putnam County, he attended Butler-Baker School and various churches throughout the county. He was employed by the city of Eatonton until his health begin to fail. Survivors include family members, Daisy Pearl Reid of Eatonton; Monica Broadnax and Victor Hull, both of Atlanta; Ella Mae Key and Mary Key, both of Brockton, Mass.; Annie Mae Griggs of Gray; Juanita Sheriff of Boston, Mass.; Tonette Scott of Atlanta; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Angela LaFaye Dennis, 43, died Saturday, April 25, 2007 at her residence. A native and life-long resident of Putnam County, she was a member of Hunt’s Chapel AME Church, but recently became a member of Doctor’s On Call Outreach Deliverance Ministry and was a licensed evangelist. Survivors include her husband, Geoffery Dennis; daughter, Takesha Ross and husband Levert; sons, Titus Dunn, Denver Dunn Jr. and Desmond Dunn, all of Eatonton; five sisters, Lillie Thompson and husband Emcy of Macon, Diane Simmons and husband Ronnie, Audrey Wright, Muretha Hurt and Lisa Jackson, all of Eatonton; five brothers, Charlie Mullins Jr., Calvin Mullins, Brian Mullens and Franklin Wright, all of Eatonton, and Bennie Jackson of Boston, Mass.; five grandchildren, Montavious Farley, Makiya Ross, Tityana Ross and Samya Dunn, all of Eatonton, and Delvin Brannon of Monticello; stepmother, Eva Mullens of Eatonton; three aunts, Leila Bell West of Macon, Daisy Reid and Ruby Mullins, both of Eatonton; two uncles, Tommy Lee Mullins and wife Sally of Macon, and Joe Henry Mullins and wife Ola of Ohio; godson, Mark Reid Jr. of Eatonton; friend, Vickie Sadler of Eatonton; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Carol A. Benedict
Carol Ann Benedict, 63, of Steele Bridge Trail in Eatonton, died Friday, April 20, 2007 at Heartland Hospice in Macon. Born April 26, 1943 in Atlanta, she was a daughter of Gary Dupont Hancock and Mary Frances Wellborn. She worked several years as a secretary, but spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, William Benedict of Eatonton; two sons, William Benedict Jr. of Kentucky, and Darren Benedict of Monticello; three sisters, Linda Fannell of South Carolina, Sadie Dyes and Jeannette Smith, both of Alabama; and five grandchildren, Blake, Brooke, Brittany, Brandon and Corey. Funeral service was Monday, April 20 at Manley Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Michaels officiating. Interment followed at Green Meadows Cemetery in Conyers. Manley Memorial Baptist deacons served as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to Manley Memorial Church building fund. Arthur Clements
Arthur Clements, 86, of 101 Old Macon Circle, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at his residence. Born July 19, 1920 in Eatonton, he was the eldest child of Charlie and Marie Belle Clements. He was educated in the Putnam County Schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving his country, he was a school bus driver for Putnam County Schools for 20 years; the Eatonton Co-op Creamery employed him for 20 years; he worked at Horton Homes for seven years, and he worked for the U. S. Forestry Service for seven years. Even with all of his stated endeavors he found time to enjoy farming. On Sept. 8, 1946, Arthur married Edith Williams. They made their home in Putnam County. They would become the proud parents of two children. Edith preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Clements; son, William McArthur Clements and wife Cora Ann; granddaughter, Misharri Andreya Clements; sister Carrie Lou Harper and husband Richard of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial service was Saturday, April 21 at the chapel of Bernard’s Family Funeral Care. Brother Hoyt Hester officiated.
William “Billy” Lupton
Williams Morris “Billy” Lupton, 52, of Arrowhead Trail in Eatonton, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, in Putnam General Hospital. Born June 13, 1954 in Jacksonville, Fla., he was a son of Morris Lee Lupton and Billie JoAnn Hammond. He was a business owners and spent most of his professional career in retail sales. Survivors include his grandmother, Virginia Hammond of Jacksonville, Fla.; mother, JoAnn Tyson and husband Alvis of Brooklet; father, Morris Lupton and wife Kim of Greensboro; brother Bobby and wife Debbie of Eatonton; sister Lisa Bowen and husband Everette of Eatonton; three sons, Lee Lupton and wife Ginger of Rincon, Jason Lupton of Eatonton, and Travis Lupton of Darlington, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kinsley Lupton, Hayden Lupton, both of Eatonton, and Tanslei Lupton of Claxton. Funeral service was Friday, April 20 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel with the Rev. A.M. Samples officiating. Interment followed in Central Georgia Cemetery.
Daniel J. Pignato Sr.
Daniel Joseph Pignato Sr., 69, of Union Point, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Born Jan.7, 1938 in Kanawha County, W.V., he was the son of Charles Pignato of Eatonton, and the late Leah Patricia Luger Pignato. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School in W.V., and attended West Virginia State. While in Dunbar, he was a paint chemist for Vimasco Corp. In August 1957, he married Janet Lee Rhodes, and they enjoyed almost 50 years together. In 1969, they moved to Jupiter, Fla., where he worked as an irrigation contractor and owned and operated First Marine Sprinklers, Inc. for 25 years. They moved to Chauncey outside of Eastman in 1994 and have lived in Greene County since 2004. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Pignato. Daniel was an avid gardener and an outdoor enthusiast, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Janet Rhodes Pignato of Union Point; daughter, Pamela Renea Fentress of Winter Springs, Fla.; two sons, Daniel Joseph Pignato Jr. and wife Diane of Jupiter, Fla., and Lance Alan Pignato and wife Michelle of Union Point; father, Charles Pignato and stepmother, Betty, of Eatonton; two sisters, Nancy P. Cook and husband Don of Burnsville, N.C., and Cathy Owing and husband Tim of Augusta; four brothers, Thomas Pignato of Franklin, N.C., John Pignato of Nicaragua, Harold Pignato of Jupiter, Fla., and Sam Pignato and wife Carlotta of Atlanta,; six grandchildren, Allison and Brent, Hunter, Tanner Pignato, Ashley and Stephen Fentress; and a number of other relatives and friends. Ruby L. Hawkins
Ruby L. Hawkins, 85, of Eatonton, passed away at her home in Kinderhook on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. A native of Putnam County, she was the third daughter of John Martin and Fannie Mae Resseau Lawrence. She graduated from Eatonton High School in 1938 and attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught at Harmony School from 1940-41. In 1941, she married the late Charlie Hawkins of Eatonton. Following her marriage, she worked briefly at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Macon. She then went to work at Enterprise in Eatonton for civil service, being one of three women and four men in this job. She and Mr. Charlie later owned a restaurant after their sons were born. Miss Ruby was supervisor of Eatonton Grammar School lunch room beginning in 1950. She held this job for 14 years, leaving due to the illness of her husband. In early 1948, the family moved to the country, renting a house and 300 acres from Georgia Power for $50 per year. After the sale of this land to Owen Illinois, the house had to be moved. The family bought 60 acres on the corner of Georgia Highway 212 and Twin Bridges Road in the Kinderhook District, and this became home. During the time of remodeling, the family lived and operated General Putnam Motel and Restaurant for N.D. Horton Sr. When the house was moved, the county had bulldozed down enough trees to make room for it to sit. All of this was cleared away by Miss Ruby and the boys with no equipment other than picks, axes and a cross-cut saw. Miss Ruby had the right to take pride in her yard, she created it from the wooded are it had once been. She worked at Enterprise from December 1966 to May 1973, when she to work at McGaw Laboratory in Milledgeville. During 1975 while the plant was closed, she was able to take several nice trips. She returned to McGaw in October 1975 and retired as a security guard in 1986. After retirement, she devoted her time to her mama and her family. Following Mama’s death, she worked briefly with her brother Charles at the wood yard on Dennis Station Road. Miss Ruby was a charter member of Lakeshore Community Church and was a devoted member since May 1971. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Nancy Hawkins of Social Circle, and Johnny and Carol Hawkins of Eatonton; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brian and Misty Hawkins and daughter Camden of Bishop, Ashley and Alan and children Thomas and Katie of Social Circle, and Dusty and Lisa Hawkins and sons John Dustin and Dawson of Madison. She is also survived by her sister, Janette Moore of Eatonton; sisters-in-law, Petronia Clopton of Eatonton and Winnie McCoy of Milledgeville; her aunt, Eunice Fantasia of Watertown, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Lakeshore Community Church with burial in the family plot at Mt. Ararat Methodist Church. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton was in charge of the arrangements.
E. Rudolph Gregory
Eugene Rudolph Gregory, 73, of 115 Candler Road in Eatonton, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 at his residence. Born Oct. 2, 1933 in Wilcox County to the late John Lewis and Elizabeth Gammage Gregory, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Working in the forestry industry, he retired as a saw mill consultant. Although he lived many places during his life, he spent a majority of it in Eatonton and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Ann Gregory of Eatonton; two sisters, Bessie Irene Terry of Rochelle, and Joann Bridges of Eatonton; daughter, Valorie Harrison and husband Danny of Milledgeville; three grandchildren, Danielle Harrison, Greg Harrison and Brandi Harrison Brett; and three great- grandchildren, Miranda Jay Brett, Joseph Gregory Harrison and T Kitchens. Funeral service was Tuesday, April 10 at Crossroads Baptist Church with John McMillian and Neil Bridges officiating. Interment followed at Pine Grove Cemetery. Willie F. Butts
Willie Flag Butts, 56, died Friday, March 16, 2007. Born Nov. 24, 1951 in Eatonton, he was the youngest of 10 children born to the late Emanuel and Verlie Mae Butts. Siblings Emanuel, Moses, Agnes, Annie Mae, Lillie and Margaret preceded him in death. He graduated from Butler-Baker High School in Eatonton and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After ending his tour of duty, he moved to Philadelphia and began a 32-year career with Merck & Company. In 1979, he married Rosemarie Dean. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Penllyn, Pa., where he helped found the Men’s Chorus and also sang with the Voices of Love choir. Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie Butts; son, Joseph D. Sharon; granddaughter, Alysha Whitaker; sisters, Mary Johnson, Mayme Palmer and Marthat Lawrence; brothers-in-law, Otis Johnson, Curtis Palmer and David Lawrence; sisters-in-law, Annie Mae Butts, Jane Richardson, Pearl Travis, Roslyn Dean and Sally Starks; brothers-in-law, William Richardson, Preston Travis and John Starks; aunts, Emma Matthews and Charlye Butts; six godchildren, Meliss, Rian, Thomas, Danny, Anthony and Andre; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Blake R. Carswell
Blake Randall Carswell, 25, of Lower Harmony Road in Eatonton, died Saturday. March 31, 2007. Born in Baldwin County to Bradley and Debbie Carswell, he had lived in Eatonton all his life. A 1999 Gatewood graduate, he attended Georgia Military College and was a maintenance supervisor for the family-owned business. Survivors include his parents, Bradley and Debbie Carswell of Eatonton; sister, Natalie Nichole Holle of Augusta; paternal grandfather, Nelson Carswell of Eatonton; and maternal grandparents, Johnny and Sara Williamson of Eatonton. J. Brent Clark
James Brenton Clark, 23, of Broughton Road in Newton, died Saturday, March 31, 2007. Born Jan. 18, 1984 in Clarke County, he was a son of Dave and Nancy Clark. A 2002 graduate of Gatewood School, he was a dairy farmer. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Christine and Buck Watkins, and paternal grandfather, James Carroll Clark. Survivors include his parents, Nancy Clark of Newborn and Dave Clark of Madison; two sisters, Ashley Rebehah Clark and Megan Elisabeth Clark; grandmother Doris Hilsman Clark; and paternal great-grandmother Mildred Hilsman. Ivelyn L. Gregory
Ivelyn Lanier Gregory, 100, of Eatonton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at her residence. Born April 14, 1906, she was the daughter of the late I.G. and Alda Lanier of Ivanhoe in Bulloch County. She graduated from Wesleyan Conservatory of Music and Art in Macon. While teaching school in Milan, she met and married Thomas A. Gregory Jr. on Nov. 26, 1935. The couple moved to Eatonton in 1936, where she helped her husband run the office of the Eatonton Messenger during his tenure as editor. She was active in First United Methodist Church, Uncle Remus Women’s Club and was a charter member of Town and Country Garden Club. She served two terms as superintendent of Putnam County Schools from 1940-48. She taught piano and trumpet lessons at Eatonton Grammar School and high school during the 1950s and continued to privately teach piano after moving to Atlanta in 1960 until her retirement in the 1980s. She was also involved with the restoration of Rockville Schoolhouse during the 1990s. She and Tom returned to Eatonton in 1993. Survivors include her daughter, Lyn Hendren of Eatonton; two grandsons, Ryan Gregory Hendren and Thomas Lanier Hendren of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Helen Lanier De La Hunt of Claxton; and a host of nieces, nephews and in-laws. Funeral service was Saturday, March 31 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peggy Little officiating. Nephew Alex Gregory Jr. delivered the eulogy. Walter Hampton Sr.
Walter “Walt” Hampton Sr., 74, of Springs Road in Eatonton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. Born Nov. 26, 1932 in Bibb County, he was a son of the late Robert and Mildred Shepard Hampton. A U.S. Navy veteran and Georgia Power retiree, he owned and operated Walt and Johnnie’s Convenience Store with his wife. Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Hampton of Eatonton; brother Jimmy Bollinger of Brunswick; sister, Mary Knowlden of Williamsport, Pa.; sons, Walter Hampton Jr. and Gerry Hampton, both of Eatonton; stepson, Mike Cummings of Eatonton; daughters, Donna Starling of Parkersburg, W.V. and Cheri Hampton, both of Eatonton; stepdaughters, Patricia Welch of Eatonton and Susie Cheney of Biloxi, Miss. Ruby Lawrence Hawkins, 85, of Eatonton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at her home in Kinderhook. A native of Putnam County, she was the third daughter of John Martin and Fannie Mae Resseau Lawrence. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Nancy Hawkins of Social Circle, and Johnny and Carol Hawkins of Eatonton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brian and Misty Hawkins and daughter Camden of Bishop, Ashley and Alan Abercrombie and children Thomas and Katie of Social Circle, and Dusty and Lisa Hawkins and sons John Dustin and Dawson of Madison; sister, Janette Moore of Eatonton; sisters-in-law, Patronia Clopton of Eatonton and Winnie McCoy of Milledgeville; aunt, Eunice Fantasia of Watertown, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Doreen Brown
Doreen Brown, 76, of Rincon, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at Hospice Savannah, Inc. She was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, moved to the United States in 1956 and from Charleston, S.C. to Savannah in 1971. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clarence E. Brown, of Rincon; son, Clarence E. Brown Jr. (Cindy); daughter, Linda Marie Martin (Robbie) of Savannah; brothers, Bill and Ron Hancock of England; and six grandchildren, Cory, Paige, Cody, Denton, Dillon and Kelsie. Funeral service was Friday, Sept. 28 in the chapel of Fairhaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Charlie Cooper officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Abbey West. James C. Benton
James Cleveland Benton, 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. His parents were the late Grover Cleveland Benton and Essie Thomas Benton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as medic and was part of the Normandy invasion. He was a member of the Monticello Baptist Church. Before retirement, he owned and operated an auto repair shop and farmed. Until 1969, he operated the Farmers Implement Company Car Dealership in Monticello. He was an assistant registrar for several years, a member of the Jasper County Jaycees and American Legion Post 110. His brother, Grady Roscoe Benton and sister, Catherine Holliday, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Martin Benton of Monticello; children, James Martin Benton of Silver Springs, Md., Larry Stephen Benton of Monticello and Jan Benton Long of Eatonton; grandchildren, Sara Benton, Matthew Benton, Amanda Eubanks, Joshua Benton, Drake Benton, Heather Hutchins and Wesley Raney; and great-grandchildren, Layla Eubanks, Logan Eubanks and Weston Raney. Graveside service was Thursday, Sept. 27 at Williams Payne Cemetery in Monticello. The Rev. Charles Roper officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Joshua Benton, Drake Benton, Wesley Raney, Trevor Hutchins, Jason Eubanks and Matthew Benton. The family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA, 30025 or Jasper Memorial Hospital, 898 College St., Monticello, GA, 31064. Jordan Funeral Home of Monticello was in charge of arrangements.
