Jewell Delora White, 84, of Sumiton, Ala., formerly of Rosalie, Ala., died May 25, 2002, in Gardendale Nursing Home in Gardendale, Ala. She was a mamber of Pilgrim's Home Baptist Church in Ider, Ala. White was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary Phillips Thurmond; husband, Willard White; daughter, Barbara Chaney; three sisters, Wilma Thomas, Alice Smith and Annette Rogers; son, Billy Ray White; four brothers, Cecil, Floyd, Junior and Elbert Thurmond. Survivors include: two sons, Wayne White, Flat Rock, Ala., Ricky White, Fort Payne, Ala.; four daughters, Ruth Owens, Sumiton, Ala., Shirley Smith, Trenton, Jimmie Durham, Henagar, Ala., Christine Tinker, Bryant, Ala.; sister, Vida Scogins, Atlanta; 32 grandchildren. Funeral services were held May 27 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Peterson and the Rev. Bud Laney officiating. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery in Rosalie, Ala. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

POLLY DEVLIN

Marie Paulette "Polly" Devlin, 53, of Trenton died July 27, 2002 in a local hospital. She was a homemaker, was formerly employed at Will Wear Hosiery, and was a member of New Covenant Holiness Church. Survivors include: husband, John Devlin; seven sons, James Arthur Turpin, Kenneth Campbell, Chad Giles, John Devlin, Jr., Michael, George and Tim Devlin; mother, Viola Mosier; two sisters, Julia Bryan and Brenda Brookes; six brothers, Stanley, Clyde, Ronnie, Gary and Hoyt Mosier and Charles Cronnon; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 29 in Trenton Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with evangelist Anthony Castleberry and the Rev. Edward Varner officiating. Interment was in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

RAY GANT

Ray Leon Gant, 70, of Pisgah, Ala., died July 25, 2002 in Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. He was a member of New Home Baptist Church in Rosalie, Ala., and retired truck driver from Ryder Trucks. Gant was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Leonard and Pearl Lee Phillips Gant; six brothers, Willie, Cecil, Loyd, Floyd, Leonard and Dewey Gant; sister, Docia Gant. Survivors include: wife, Overa Tinker Gant, Pisgah, Ala.; brother, Waylon Gant, Locust Fork, Ala.; sister, Edna Arnold, Pisgah, Ala. Funeral services were held July 28 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bud Durham officiating. Interment was in Pisgah Cemetery in Pisgah, Ala. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

GEORGE GLASS

George Glass, 66, of Fort Payne, Ala., died July 24, 2002 at BMC-DeKalb. He was retired master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and a retired computer instructor from Northeast State Community College. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and had worked with jailhouse ministries for a number of years. Glass was preceded in death by his parents, George Elmer and Gertrude Gant Glass; two brothers, Hugh "Red" Glass and Leonard "Pete" Glass. Survivors include: wife, Virginia Dale Wootten Glass, Fort Payne, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jimmy Sapp, Fort Worth, Texas; son, Daryl and Craig Glass, Fort Worth, Texas; step-daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Gene Altizer, Chattanooga, Tenn.; two step-sons, Tony Shrader, Ider, Ala., Brad Shrader, Rainsville, Ala.; two sisters, Louise Womack, Chattanooga, Ruthie Whitehead, Ider, Ala.; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 27 in Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Day officiating with Judge David Rains delivering the Eulogy. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Home in Ider, Ala.

DARREN HOLIFIELD

Darren Scott Holifield, 34, of Valley Head, Ala., died July 26, 2002 in a Birmingham, Ala. hospital. He attended the Rising Fawn Church of God. He was a member of the Trenton-Dade Fire Department Station 1. Holifield was preceded in death by his father, Mitchell Holifield. Survivors include: mother and step-father, Sandra and Charles Reeves, Valley Head, Ala.; brother, Brian Holifield, Trenton; sister, Summer Reeves, Valley Head, Ala.; one nephew; two nieces. Funeral services were held July 28 in Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dean Sims and the Rev. Eddie Cantrell officiating. Interment was in Sulphur Springs Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.

ANNIE PALMER

Annie Hawkins Palmer, 76, of Fort Oglethorpe died July 26, 2002 in a local healthcare faciltiy. She was a native of Morgan County, Ala., she had spent most of her life in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church. She was retired from Loveman's Department Store. Palmer was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Palmer. Survivors include: daughter, Misty Palmer, Savannah; granddaughter, Harli Palmer, Chattanooga; four sisters, Alice Holland and Edna Floyd, both of Fort Oglethorpe, Elna Grant, Trenton, and Betty Couch, Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, James Hawkins, Scottsboro, Ala., Albert Hawkins, Avon Park, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 29 in South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Dr. Neal Brown officiating. Interment was in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South. Arrangements were by South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Rossville.

CHARLIE WRIGHT

Charlie Wright, 95, of Flintstone, formerly of Pisgah, Ala., died July 27, 2002 in Fort Oglethorpe. He was retired from Paramount Display Craft in Chattanooga and was the oldest living member of Concord Baptist Church in Henagar, Ala. He was a member of Sylvania Masonic Lodge 673 for more than 55 years. Wright was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Brammel and Maude "Rush" Wright; wife, Rsa Y. Wright; five brothers; three sisters. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Mabel and Joe H. Brown, Flintstone; sister-in-law, Mrs. Van Wright, Henagar, Ala.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 30 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Royce Powell officiating. Interment was in Unity Cemetery in Sylvania, Ala. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

EMPRESS DURHAM

Empress Reeves Durham, 91, of Trenton died Sept. 30, 2002 at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Dade County, a homemaker and a member of the Rising Fawn Baptist Church. Durham was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Durham and daughter Mary Elizabeth Durham. Survivors include daughter Kathryn Castleberry; two sons, Carlton and Roland Durham, both of Trenton; three sisters, Stella Smith, Trenton, Jewell Durham, Chickamauga, Elda Page, Lakeview; brother, Jess Reeves, Trenton; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. in the Trenton Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. A.C. Durham and the Rev. Bill Castleberry officiating. Interment will follow in the Deer Head Cove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

THELMA GENTRY

Thelma Mae "Peedle" Gentry, 70, of Trenton died at her residence on Sept. 23, 2002. She attended the Dade County Senior Citizen Center. Gentry was preceded in death by her husband Robert Gentry. Survivors include two daughters Glenda Faye Geddie and Glenda Jean Whited, both of Trenton; four sons, Rickey, Randy, Barry Leon and Jerry Cloud, all of Trenton; sister, Mary Lou Ellenbolt, Crystal Springs, Fla.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held today at 1 p.m. in Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Cantrell officiating. Interment will follow in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens in Trenton. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.

ROGER PRITCHETT

Roger Dale Pritchett, 43, of Chattanooga died Sept. 25, 2002. A native of Higdon, Ala., he was a 1977 graduate of North Sand Mountain High School, he owned and operated B and R Equipment Company and was of the Holiness faith. Pritchett was preceded in death by his grandparents Leroy and Gladys Pritchett, Edd and Myrtle Hill; brother-in-law, Harold Sampson. Survivors include companion Barbara LaGasse, Chattanooga; two step-daughters, Susan Darnell and Janice Woodward, both of Ooltewah, Tenn.; stepson Randy LaGassee, Nashville, Tenn.; parents, Cleo and Hazel Pritchett, Higdon, Ala.; five sisters, Edith Cooper, Jonesboro, Sandy Sampson, Sheron Carrell and Dianne Pritchett, all of Higdon, Ala., Debra Brown, Flat Rock, Ala.; three brothers, Rodney Pritchett, Fort Oglethorpe, Greg Pritchett, Orlando, Fla., Eric Pritchett, Higdon, Ala.; nine grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; a host of friends. Funeral services were held Sept. 28 in Higdon Holiness Church with the Brother Edwin Spurgeon and the Brother Edward Atchley officiating. Interment was in Higdon Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Bryant, Ala.

PAULINE BLEVINS

Pauline "Patsy" Blevins, 87, of Deer Head Cove, Ala., died Feb. 1, 2003, at NHC Healthcare in Chattanooga. Blevins was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Agnes Parsons; husband, Noel Blevins; son, Roscoe Blevins; brothers, Cleon and Selburn Parsons; sisters, Audrey Parsons, Ellie Chapman and Alma Jackson. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Bert and Bill Bentley, Atlanta; three daughters, Betty Jo Castleberry and Cleo Blevins, both of Ider, Ala., Winnie Pell, Chattanooga; son, Bobby Blevins, Chattanooga; son and daughter-in-law, Gardner and Connie Blevins, Trenton; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 in Corner Stone Chapel with the grandson Vincent Bentley delivering the eulogy and the Rev. Billy Stallings officiating. Interment was in Deer Head Cove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Chapel in Ider, Ala.

WILLIAM BROWN JR.

William Claude Brown Jr., 37, of Tiftonia, died Jan. 30, 2003. He was employed by M and M Industries, Inc. of Chattanooga. He was of the Church of God faith. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Catherine Wilson Brown Sr.; brother, Paul Brown; two nephews, Rodney Little and Randall Cole. Survivors include: daughter, ReBecka Brown, Trenton; brother and sister-in-law, Alvin Sr. and Lisa Brown; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Randy Cole, Fort Payne, Ala., Angie and Bob Brown, Tiftonia, Tenn., Pat and Mike Gross, Hixson, Tenn., Janine Sampson, East Ridge, Tenn., Margie and Rickey Little, Faye and Bill Lynn, all of Ringgold, Pam and Kenny Brewer, Rossville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 3 in Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Quillan Thurman officiating. Interment was in Old Sardis Cemetery in Victoria, Tenn. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.

JOHN CROW

John Wesley "J.W." Crow, 82, of Ider, Ala., died Jan. 29, 2003 at his residence. He was a member of Pilgrim Home Baptist Church in Ider, Ala., Woodmen of World Fraternal Society Lodge #93. He served during 1940 with the C.C. Camp at Fort Mountain. Crow was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Columbus and Cora Bell Bunnell Crow; six brothers; five sisters; four great-grandchildren. Survivors include: wife, Pauline Crow, Ider, Ala.; son, Carl Wesley Crow, Henagar, Ala.; two daughters, Linda Brenton and Vicki Brown, both of Ider, Ala.; brothers, J.C. Crow, Ider, Ala.; grandchildren; Lori Keith, Sheila Westbrook, Jason Keith, Kristie Wootten, Duane Crow, Danette Townson and Kathy Crow. Funeral services were held Jan. 31 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Hilley and the Rev. Arthur Boydston officiating. Interment was in Mountain Home Cemetery in Ider, Ala. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

CLARENCE LANEY

Clarence Brennon Laney, 81, of Pisgah, Ala., died Jan. 29, 2003 at his residence. He was a member of Freehill Baptist Church in Rosalie, Ala. Laney was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie J. and Etta Morrison Laney; brother, Perry Laney; sister, Bernice Powell. Survivors include: wife, Imogene Haley Laney, Pisgah, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lynn Laney, St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother, Bud Laney, Pisgah, Ala.; six sisters, Birtie Ingram, Pell City, Ala., Audrey Roden, Tampa, Fla., Flossie Camp, Rossville, Myrtle Houise, Ruby Williams, both of Rosalie, Ala., Ruth Bell, Ringgold; grandchildren, Matthew Laney, Jacksonville, Fla., Mark Laney, St. Petersburg, Fla. Funeral services were held Jan. 31 in Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Watson Williams and the Rev. James Hutcherson officiating. Interment was in Free Hill Cemetery in Rosalie, Ala. Arrangements were by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.

EVELYN PENNINGTON

Evelyn Moore Pennington, 81, of New Salem, died Feb. 2, 2003 at her home. She was a lifelong resident of New Salem community, was the youngest child of the late Bert and Katherine Moore, a homemaker, a member of the New Salem Community Center, New Salem Handcraft Club and a member of the New Salem Baptist Church. Evelyn (the quilt lady) was known throughout the south for her beautiful handmade quality quilts that she exhibited at many craft shows and was a regular performer at the New Salem Hay Haw show. Pennington was preceded in death by her sister Edith Moore Logan; six brothers, Driggs, Norman, Terrence, Sherman, Lawrence and Kenneth Moore. Survivors include: husband, W.H. Pennington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Becky Pennington, Peck and Judy Pennington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Larry Scruggs, karen and Eddie McBryar; all of New Salem; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services were held Feb. 4 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Bradford and the Rev. Lee Moore officiating. Interment was in Hawkins Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

CHARLESCIE ROBERTSON

Charlescie Robertson, "Granny", 81, of Bryant, Ala., died Jan. 28, 2003. She was a lifelong resident of the tri-state area and was associated with the congregation of Jehovah's Witness in Trenton. Robertson was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Robertson, Sr. and daughter Dorothy Lopez Nunez. Survivors include: two daughters, Peggy Dunn, Noble, Rose Hargis, Bryant, Ala.; two sons, John Logan, Lookout Mounain, Robert Robertson, Jr., Trenton; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held privately. Donations can be made to Kidney Foundation, 620 Cherokee Blvd., Chattanooga, Tenn. 37405. Arrangements were by South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Rossville.

BUDDY STEVENS SR.

Buddy L. Stevens Sr., 54, of Flat Rock, Ala., died Jan. 31, 2003 at his home. He was employed at ADM in Chattanooga for over 30 years, was a 1966 graduate of Dade County High School and attended the Hooker Church of God. Stevens was preceded in death by his mother Sarah Stevens. Survivors include: wife, Mildred Stevens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Steven Hicks, Trenton, Brenda and Steve Howard, Rossville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Lisa Stevens Jr., Fort Payne, Ala., Nathan Stevens, Chattanooga; three sisters, Ann Cronnon and Christine Vawter, both of Chattanooga, Marcella Collier, Macon; brother, Larry Stevens, Flat Rock, Ala.; father, Johnnie Stevens, Cleveland, Tenn.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel with the Minister Quillen Thurman officiating. Interment was in Sarah's Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore Funeral Home in Trenton.

FREEMAN WHITTEN

Freeman "Smokey" Whitten, 71, of Henagar, Ala., died Feb. 2, 2003, at BMC-DeKalb. He was a Korean War veteran, a member of Henagar Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post #39, Henagar Baptist Church and was employed at Wills Valley Elementary School. Whitten was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Ester Ann Whitten; brother, Ralph Whitten. Survivors include: wife, Louise Whitten; daughter, Teresia Whitten, Higdon, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law, Lamar "Little Smokey" and Ann Whitten, Henagar, Ala.; grandchildren, Heath Martin, Kristen and Emily Whitten; four sisters, Stella Badgett, Aroney, Ala., Cora Lee Wheeler, Albertville, Ala. and Vernie Lou Patterson, Boaz, Ala. Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. in Corner Stone Chapel with the Rev. Bud Laney officiating. Interment will follow in Fuller Cemetery. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Home in Ider, Ala.

ALICE BARBEE

Alice Kennedy Barbee, 83, of Chattanooga died April 1, 2003. She was a member of Hooker Church of God. She was retired from CSS Filtration. Survivors include husband Delmer Barbee, Soddy, Tenn.; two daughters, Judy Hartman, Fay Fine, both of Bryant, Ala.; sister, Martha Gouger, Jasper, Tenn.; brother, T.C. Casey, Jasper, Tenn.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 4 in Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Quillen Thurman officiating. Interment was in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West. Arrangements were by Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton.

CHARLSIE GAMBLE

Charlsie Mae Talley Gamble, 88, of Flat Rock, Ala., died March 31, 2003 at her residence. Gamble was preceded in death by husband Aubrey Gamble and seven brothers and sisters. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Katherine Gamble, Higdon, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and Joe Brown, Flat Rock, Ala.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held April 3 in Higdon Holiness Church with the Rev. Edwin Spurgeon and the Rev. Johnny Talley officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Chapel in Ider, Ala.
