Mrs. Dorsey Mae Payton, 85,
entered into rest Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Burke Medical Center.
Funeral services wil be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Neely Grove Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Waynesboro with the Rev. Sarah C. Cooper officiating and the Rev. John A. Jordan, eulogist. Interment will follow in Pines Cemetery.
Mrs. Payton was a dedicated mother and a compassionate and caring person. In her passing, she leaves behind a legacy of good works. She was employed by the Burke County school system as an assistant lunchroom manager for many years and a nutritionist by Burke County Headstart for 10 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Payton and Leuvonia Ann Payton; two sons, Art Payton and George E. Payton; a stepson, George Payton Jr.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Evelyn McClellan Davis, 89,
entered into rest Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at the Keysville Nursing Home.Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 6, at Rosemont Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Mrs.Davis will lie in state in the church from noon until 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Davis was born in Jefferson County, however she spent most of her life in Burke County. She was a self-employed beautician until she retired in 1983. She was a member of Rosemont Heights Baptist Church.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by husbands, Rufus Walter McClellan Sr. and Palmer Davis; and two sons, Robert Charles McClellan and Jim Hill McClellan.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Logue of St. Clair; three sons, Hill McClellan (Lynette) of Hephzibah, R. W. McClellan Jr. of Augusta and Johnny McClellan of Waynesboro; a daughter, Annelle Chance of Alexander; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dickey McClellan, Hugh Walden, Emory Walden, Cameron Hadden, Mike Knight, Billy Marchman, Ray McClellan and Freddie Yelton. The pallbearers are asked to meet at the church at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel.
Lt. (Ret.) Charles “Punchy” Brinson died Oct. 4, 2004,
after an extended illness.Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Millen Cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 7-9 p.m. at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.
Mr. Brinson was a native of Jenkins County and had lived there most of his life. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a lieutenant and was also a former merchant marine.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pete Brinson.
He is survived by his wife, Martha S. Brinson; his mother, Venita Towers of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Charles A. (Chuck) Brinson Jr. of Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter, Leigh Anne Yeary of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Ann Tucker of Jacksonville, Fla., Gail Kirby of Auburndale, Fla., and Cheryl Parks of Jacksonville, Fla,; three brothers, Sam Brinson of Inverness, Fla., Don Brinson of Moultrie and Ray Parks of Starke, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Melrose Pope Clayton, 86,
entered into rest Sunday Oct. 3, 2004 at McDuffie Regional Hospital in Thomson.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 at Rosemont Heights Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Alderman and Earl Saxon officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Clayton will lie in state at the church from 3-4 p.m.
Born in Jenkins County, Mrs. Clayton had lived in Waynesboro for over 50 years. She worked 35 years for Samsons Manufacturing before retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Rosemont Heights Baptist Church in Waynesboro.
Mrs. Clayton was preceded in death by her husband Homer Clayton and son Don Roy Clayton. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Silas and husband Cary of Thomson; a son, Frankie Clayton and wife Cathy of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, Kim Meadows, Rob Clayton, Craig Clayton, Clay Silas and Neal Clayton; and four great-grandchildren, Trevor Clayton, Reed Clayton, Jackson Clayton and Hunter Clayton.
Pallbearers will be Roy Black, Roy Pope, Tommy Clayton, Jesse Williamson, Kenneth English, Reimer Pope and Joey Phillips. The pallbearers are asked to meet at the church at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The family will received friends at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 5. Arrangements by DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, 842 Liberty St., Waynesboro, (706) 554-3531.
Johnnie Walker “Noonie” Raborn Jr. of Vidette
died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. His funeral was 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Halford officiating.
Burial was in Raborn Cemetery in Vidette. Mr. Raborn was a field supervisor with Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Program (SEBWEP) and former owner of Johnnie’s Paint and Body and Johnnie’s Auto Parts on Tobacco Road. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie Walker Raborn and Maudell Raborn.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Amos Raborn; daughter, Jennifer Raborn; two sons, Johnnie Raborn III and Bryon Raborn; three sisters, Effie Miles, Brenda Faglier and Rachel Hendrix; four grandchildren, Johnnie Walker Raborn IV, Mason Raborn, Dottie Ryan and Meagan Ryan. Pallbearers were Kenneth Miles Jr., B.B. Miles, Len Hendrix, Richie Faglier, Patrick Faglier, Charles Daly, Darrell Johnson and John Mobley.
Honorary pallbearers were co-workers of SEBWEP.
On Dec. 5, 2004, Mrs. Nettie Mae MaGahee Sims,
81, of Waynesboro, went home to Jesus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew T. Sims, and her son, Bobby Drew Sims.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Greenscut United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Fort Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Dearing. The Revs. Roy White and Wayne Dixon will officiate. A visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 7, at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home in Waynesboro.
Mrs. Sims is survived by three daughters, Betty Sims Daniels of Hiawassee, Linda (Dennis) Sims Millians of Augusta and Diedra L. Sims of Waynesboro; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia S. Sims of Blythe; three brothers, John (Elizabeth) McGahee, Talmadge McGahee and William McGahee; nine grandchildren, Angela (Steve) Willis, Michael (Wendy) Sims, Tommy J. (Angela) Allen Jr., Charles A. Daniels, Rebecca (Forrest) Edwards, Regina L. Sims, Dana A. Allen, Whitney (Aubrey) Street and Matthew W. Sims; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Sims, Jeff Allen, Chuck Daniels, Matt Sims, Mack McGahee, Tony Colvin, Forest Edwards and Aubrey Street. Honorary pallbearers will be R. E. Rollins III, Wayne Sims, David Martin, Gene Sims, Irvin Collins and Jerry Sharpe.

Mr. James H. Long Sr., 73, of Demopolis, Ala.,
died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at his residence.
His funeral was 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Fairhaven Baptist Church in Demopolis, Ala., with Dr. Allen Atkins and the Rev. Don Smith officiating.
Burial was in Demopolis Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Long, a native of Burke County, had been a resident of Demopolis, Ala., since 1969. He was a member of Fairhaven Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent. He was also one of the founders and caretakers of the memorial garden at Fairhaven.
Mr. Long was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service and was a retired employee of Corp of Engineers at Demopolis Lock and Dam as lockmaster after 20 years of service. Mr. Long was also a former Mason and Shriner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Elmore Long Sr. and Alma Wren Long.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Dixon of Demopolis, Ala.; two daughters, Susan (Alan) Porter of Huntsville, Ala. and Cindy (Gregory) Haines of Moulton, Ala.; one son, James H. (Kathy) Long Jr. of Tyrone; three sisters, Mary Powell of Savannah, Ann (Bobby) Brooks of Loganville and Nancy (Barry) Ogletree of Atlanta; one brother, Frank (Sybil) Long Jr. of Girard; five grandchildren, James Matthew Long, Jeremy Porter, Katie Haynes, Ashley Long and Jake Porter; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Shelby Broadhead, Gwinn Etheridge, Frank Lavender, Milton Murray, Eugene Corley and Tommy Tate.Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Five Sunday School class of Fairhaven Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends contact Robert L. Kidd Jr., Danny R. Easterwood or Tony Gary.
Helen Corley Clarke, 73,
of Hephzibah entered into rest Friday, Jan. 28, 2005 at University Hospital.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Hopeful Baptist Church with the Revs. John Bolineau, Chuck Carswell and Greg Glover officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Clarke was retired from First Union Bank (formerly Georgia Railroad Bank). She was a faithful member of Hopeful Baptist Church of which she served as church clerk for 25 years. She was a choir member, secretary-treasurer of the WMU, taught youth Sunday School and served in these positions for many years. She was a native of Burke County.
Mrs. Clarke fought the battle of lymphoma for six and a half years and was an encouragement and inspiration to others. She will be remembered and loved for her kindness and generosity to others. Mrs. Clarke was the beloved wife for 56 years of Hammond C. Clarke Sr. They were married on Nov. 7, 1948.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Hammond “Hank” C. Clarke Jr. and Wren, two daughters, Kimberly Helen Clarke and Jan Corley Clarke, all of Hephzibah; grandchildren, Melissa Faith Clarke of Duluth and Hope Nicole Clarke McLain and husband Barry and Jonathan Hart, all of Hephzibah; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Clarke was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Georgia Loren Corley, and siblings, Sam Corley Jr., Dorothy Corley Clarke and Burke Broxton. Mrs. Clarke was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Pallbearers were Bobby Lowe, Wendell Stinchcumb, Larry Cliatt, Jimmy Williamson, Louis Hrabousky and E.C. Helmly. Memorials may be made to the Hopeful Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O.
