Maggie Lee Lowery

ELLERSLIE - Maggie Lee Lowery, 87, of Ellerslie, died Thursday, January 8, 1998 at her residence.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 10, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel, in Columbus. Burial was in Parkhill Cemetery.

Mrs. Lowery was born September 23, 1910 in McRae, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Alice Shepard Roberson. She was a Homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lowery.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Harp of Ellerslie; two sons, George Lowery of Waverly Hall and J.R. Lowery of Columbus; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Barney H. Rutland

HAMILTON ROAD - Mr. Barney H. Rutland, 59, of 3750 Hamilton Road, died Thursday morning, January 8, 1998 at Emory University Hospital after a brief illness.

Services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Pine Mountain First Baptist Church with the Reverend Wayne Hollaway and the Reverend Steve Moore officiating. Entombment followed in the Shadowlawn Mausoleum.

Mr. Rutland was born February 12, 1938 in LaGrange. He was the son of the late William Hugh and Mary Jo DeLoach Rutland. He had lived in LaGrange all his life and was a graduate of LaGrange High School, class of 1957. He was formerly president of Webb Machinery Company and was currently a salesman with Stewart Wholesale Hardware Company. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Mountain and was an Army veteran having served during the Cuban Crisis.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ann Webb Rutland of LaGrange; one brother, Scotty Rutland of High Point, North Carolina; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gene and Hazel Webb Scott and Zack and Brenda Webb, all of Pine Mountain; nieces and nephews, Anthony (Tony) and Lynn Scott Giles of Birmingham, Thomas Scott of Pine Mountain; Holly Webb of Auburn and Pine Mountain, Wendy Rutland and Holly Rutland, both of High Point, North Carolina; and great nephews, Andrew Scott of Pine Mountain; Scott Giles and John Mark (Rowdy) Giles, both of Birmingham, Alabama; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road, was in charge of the arrangements.

Alec Benjamin Brown

WAVERLY HALL - Alex Benjamin "Ben" Brown, 59, of Waverly Hall, died Monday, January 12, 1998 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 4:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David helms officiating. Interment will be in the Waverly Hall City Cemetery.

Mr. Brown was born December 24, 1938 in Columbus. He was the son of Janie Reese Brown and the late Edwin Tim Brown. He was a self-employed Heavy Equipment Operator, a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Cataula, and attended Bethesda Baptist Church in Ellerslie. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors, other than his mother, are his wife, Joyce Cothron Brown of Waverly Hall; two daughters, Joy (Phillip) B. Brown and Susan (Bart) B. Lecomte, both of Waverly Hall; two sons, Edwin (Sherry) Brown of Shiloh and Barry (Jennifer) Brown of Fortson; four brothers, Bob Brown of Cataula, Mason Brown and Charles Brown, both of Columbus and Roger Brown of Phenix City, Alabama; 12 grandchildren; and mother-in-law, Peggy Wood of Waverly Hall.

Bessie D. Mallory

PINE MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Bessie D. Mallory, 75, of Pine Mountain, died Monday, January 12, 1998 at Florence Hand Nursing home in LaGrange.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, January 14, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pine Mountain Valley First Baptist Church with Brother Gene Rosinbaum officiating. Interment will follow in the Pine Mountain Cemetery.

Mrs. Mallory was born July 13, 1922 in Pine Mountain. She was the daughter of the late Jesse William and Leona Prophett Davis.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. Paul Mallory of Pine Mountain; a son, Joe Mallory and a daughter, Betty Miller, both of Shiloh; three grandchildren, Robbie Miller of Senoia, Joey Miller of Shiloh, and Brandi Fuller of Greenville; a great grandson, Hudson Fuller of Shiloh and several nieces and nephews.

Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, will be in charge of the arrangements.

Harriett Burns Dean

FORTSON - Harriett Burns Dean, 81, of Fortson, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998 at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamilton United Methodist Church. Rev. Steve Moore, pastor of Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church, officiated. He was assisted by Ms. Dean's grandson, Rev. Robert Permenter. Burial was in Hamilton Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers were Kelly Permenter, Biff Permenter, Robert F. Permenter, Robert D. Permenter, Robbie Permenter, and Daryl Wilson.

Mrs. Dean was born September 4, 1916 in Columbus. She was the daughter of Harriett Jones Burns and John Louis Burns. She was a Homemaker, a member of Bigham Chapel United Methodist Church, and a life-long resident of Harris County. She was the widow of Albert Dudley Dean.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Druscilla (Robert) Permenter of Lutz, Florida; six grandchildren, Biff Permenter of Stone Mountain, Kim Appelmans of Boston, MA, Robert Permenter of Davenport, Florida, Kelly Permenter of Lutz, Florida, Cindy Schwed of West Palm Beach Florida, and Cecilia Ricci of Boston, MA; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Cox Funeral Home of Hamilton was in charge of the arrangements.

Sara Hopkins Myrick

MOBILE, ALABAMA - Sara Hopkins Myrick, 93, of Mobile, Alabama and formerly of Pine Mountain, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998 at Mercy Medical in Mobile, Alabama.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 27, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Mabry Collins, pastor of Hamilton Baptist Church, officiated.

Mrs. Myrick was born November 8, 1904 in Pine Mountain. She was the daughter of Sara Hopkins and Otis Aaron Hopkins. She was a graduate of Chipley High School and the Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. She had lived in Mobile, Alabama for seven years. She was a retired School Teacher, having taught at Pickett Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida and at Sunnyside School in Pine Mountain. She was a member of the Woodstock Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Florida and was the widow of William B. Myrick.

Survivors include a three daughters, Saralyn Lanquist of Columbia, South Carolina, Frances Oglesby of Mobile, Alabama and Marguerite Horne of Jacksonville, Florida; one son, James Myrick of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Emily Hartt of Pine Mountain; one brother, Henderson Hopkins of Pine Mountain; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Cox Funeral Home of Hamilton was in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Frances Louise McBride Dresher

COLUMBUS--Ms. Frances Louise McBride Dresher, 93, of Columbus, formerly of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, died Friday, June 26, 1998 at Muscogee Manor Nursing Home in Columbus.

Memorial services were held Monday, June 29, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Hamilton. Officiating Minister was Father Robert M. Haux, STB, pastor of St. Andrews Parrish in West Point. He was assisted by Rev. Steve Moore, pastor of Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church. Burial of cremains will be in Edgewood Cemetery in Chillcothe, MO.

Survivors include one son, John R. (Jack) Dresher of Pine Mountain; one daughter, Barbara Ann Shipman of LaFayette, Louisiana; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Cox Funeral Home of Hamilton was in charge of the arrangements.

Cora Nell O’ Shields

WAVERLY HALL - Cora Nell O’Shields, 81, of Waverly Hall, died Saturday, June 27, 1998 at The Medical Center in Columbus.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 29, 1998 at 3:00 p.m. at the Macon Road Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Roger Sopha officiated. Interment was in Parkhill Cemetery.

Mrs. O’Shields was born September 19, 1916 in Cataula. She was a Homemaker and a member of the Macon Road Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O’Shields.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Maxim of Columbus and Barbara Widell of St. Paul, Minnesota; a son, John Randall of Atlanta; a step-daughter, Sharon Mitchell of Atlanta; a step-son, Byron O’Shields of Riverdale, Georgia; 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Nancy Miles Abbot

MANCHESTER - Mrs. Nancy Miles Abbott, 74, of Manchester and formerly of Andover, Maine, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998 at her home.

Memorial services were held Friday, November 27, 1998 at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester.

Mrs. Abbott was born August 20, 1924 in Essex County, Maine and was the daughter of the late Mrs. Lila Johnson Jones and the late Mr. Arthur W. Jones. She was a Retired Executive Secretary for Abbot Academy in Andover, Maine and was previously employed with Lincoln Giles Construction in the same capacity. Mrs. Abbot was a member of the Manchester Woman's Club, and had lived in Manchester for two years.

Survivors, other than her husband, Richard W. Abbott, of Manchester, include one daughter, Carolyn Chantos of Tavares, Florida; two sons, Richard D. Abbott of Pine Mountain and David Abbott of Kingston, New Hampshire; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Abbot may be made to Hospice of Columbus, GA.
