Albert L. Phillips
Albert Lee Phillips, 81, of Hephzibah died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at University Hospital, Augusta. His funeral was 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Hephzibah Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Beck officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mr. Phillips, a native of Kite, had lived in the Hephzibah, Richmond County area most of his adult life. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the World War I era, and was a retired carpenter. He was a Baptist and a member of the Hephzibah Baptist Church in Hephzibah. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Connie Jean and Loyal Murphy of Hephzibah; five grandchildren, Laurie Ann Wirsu of Augusta and Barbara Elizabeth Pignotti, Loyal Lee Murphy, Albert Raymond Murphy and Ronnie Hardwick Murphy, all of Hephzibah; and 16 great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Bobby Lawrence, Steve Lawrence, Michael Davis, Bobby Parrish, James Ranew and Jim Smith.
Walter W. Leroy Sr.
Walter William Leroy Sr., 89, of Waynesboro died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 of complications following surgery in the VA Hospital, Augusta. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Waynesboro. Mr. Leroy, a native of Baltimore, Md., had been a resident of Atlanta, Charlotte, Augusta, Ft. Myers, Fla, Johnson City, Tenn., Montclair, N.J., and Baltimore before moving to Waynesboro. He graduated Pi Tau Sigma from the Georgia Institute of Technology Class of 1934 as a mechanical engineer. He was a Major in the Army Corp of Engineers during World War II, a Life-Fellow Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a Life Member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. He was in the asbestos business from 1935 to 1983, 34 of those years running his own company in Baltimore. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Leroy-Marier of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Walter W. Leroy Jr. of Frankfort, Ky., and Philip Neil Leroy Sr. of Atlanta; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary U. O'Neal
Mary U. O'Neal, 81, of Augusta died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at Doctors Hospital, Augusta. Her funeral was 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Elliott Sons Funeral Home Lumpkin Road Chapel, with the Revs. John Raborn and Billy Faulk officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mrs. O'Neal, a native of Stapleton, was a lifelong resident of the Augusta area. She was a retired packer with Owens-Illinois, also known at Lily Tulip Company and was also a retired floral designer and owner of Sunset Florist. She was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Vickie DuBose Greene of Hephzibah; two sons, Laurence R. DuBose of Waynesboro and Stephen S. Taylor of Hephzibah; a sister, Ann Barker of Summerville; four brothers, John W. Usry of Augusta, Joseph Usry of Savannah, Jerry Usry of Rincon and Harold Usry of Wrens; and 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mildred W. Tinley
Mildred W. Tinley, 87, of McBean died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002 at Doctors Hospital, Augusta. Graveside services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Nevil Smith officiating. Mrs. Tinley, a native of Richmond County, was a graduate of Tubman High School for girls and in 1973 was inspired by the death of her husband to begin a nursing career at the age of 56. She retired as a registered nurse from University Hospital in 1983. She was Baptist and a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Tinley Bodie of McBean; a son, Phillip H. Tinley of McBean; two brothers, Carl Walker and Ralph Walker, both of McBean; a sister, Myrl Westbrook of Hephzibah; three grandchildren, Arlon Cloer III, H. Berry Johnson and Ashley Harsey; and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were nephews, Sonny Walker, Don Walker, Mike Walker, Ray Walker, David Westbrook, Marion Westbrook and Barney Walker. Laura L. Jones
Laura L. Jones of Waynesboro died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at her residence. Her funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Utley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery Mrs. Jones, a native of Burke County, was a homemaker. She was a member of McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include a stepson, John Jones Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Mattie Robbins of New Church, Va., Josie Ann Jones of Ft. Myers and Barbara Lee of Waynesboro; and nine grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Gary Sapp, George Lee, Phillip Jones, John Jones, Lee E. Jones Sr. and Clayton Gilchrist. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.
Andrea L. Allen
Andrea Lawana Allen, 43, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston, S.C. Her funeral was noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at Rock Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Ms. Allen, a native of Dade County, Fla., was a nurse. She was a 1977 graduate of Miami Beach Senior High School and Nursing School in Atlanta. Survivors include two daughters, Courtney Allen and Carmenia Allen; her father, Willie James Allen; her mother, Osie M. Washington of Miami; a grandmother, Gaynelle H. Jones of Waynesboro; and a great-grandmother, Angelina Harden of Waynesboro.
Gina C. Evans
Gina Marie Cannon Evans, 34, of Keysville died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Augusta. Her funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Faith Baptist Church in Blythe, with the Rev. Albert "Bucky" Halford officiating. Entombment will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Westwood Gardens Memorial Park in Griffin. Mrs. Evans, a native of Chicago, Ill., had lived in the Richmond and Burke County areas for the past 24 years. She was a Provider Enrollment Specialist for Palmetto Government Benefits Administrators and a member of Blythe Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Joseph Lee Evans of Keysville; a stepson, William R. Evans of Keysville; a stepdaughter, Alisa A. Hawkins of Keysville; two sisters, Charlene Perdichizzi-Ponder of Alpharetta and Diane Hipps of Rex; two brothers, George Ziberna of Fayetteville and Joseph Cannon of Orlando, Fla.; her parents, Joseph and Georgina Cannon of Blythe; and four grandchildren, William B. Evans, Anthony C. Evans, Aleah Hawkins and Erin A. Cosby. Pallbearers will be Cliff Chancey Jr., Ken Chancey, Brett Chancy, Marc Chancey, Wayne Allen and Jay Dunham. Harold L. Evans
Harold Lee Evans, 59, of Keysville died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Augusta. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Keysville Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Billy Arrington and Joe Walden officiating. Mr. Evans, a native and lifelong resident of Keysville, was a heavy equipment operator for Larry Pennington Logging Company and a former employee of Louisiana Pacific for 20 plus years. He was a member of Keysville Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, William R. Evans and Joseph L. Evans, both of Keysville; a daughter, Alisa A. Hawkins of Keysville; two brothers, Dean W. Evans and Cecil R. Evans, both of Keysville; a sister, Mamie Ruth McDonald of Wrens; his mother, Mamie S. Gresham of Keysville; and four grandchildren, William B. Evans, Anthony C. Evans, Aleah Hawkins and Erin A. Cosby. Pallbearers will be Glenn W. Evans, Julian Arrington, Aubrey Wheeler, Christopher R. James, Harold Kight and Hiram Milburn. Susan North Register
Mary Suzann North Register, 48, of Waycross died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. Her funeral was 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at Beulah Baptist Church in Alma. Mrs. Register was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and had lived in Waycross for the last few years. She was a member of the Rocky Creek Saddle Club, the Ware County Saddle Club and Beulah Baptist Church in Alma, where she was a member of the church choir. Survivors include her widower, James Britt Register of Waycross; a daughter, Suzanne Tiller Brantley of Lyons; a stepdaughter, Jamie R. Pool of Vidalia; a stepson, Jeff Register of Vidalia; a sister, Barbara Lillian North Hammett of Waynesboro and four brothers, John Wright North of Roswell, Walton Frances North II of Waynesboro, Ronald Morgan North of Oklahoma and Donald Dewitt North of Waycross; and two step-grandchildren, Michael and Matthew of Vidalia.
Herschel Carswell
Herschel V. Carswell, 86, of Sardis died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 at University Hospital, Augusta. Graveside services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette, with the Rev. Rolland Dann officiating. Mr. Carswell was retired as owner and operator of H.V. Carswell & Son Tire Company in Augusta. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an active member of the Alcoholic Anonymous Swainsboro and Sylvania groups. Survivors include his widow, Betty Alley Carswell of Sardis; 10 children, Frank Stabler of Mimms, Fla., Beth Carswell of Augusta, H.V. "Major" Carswell Jr. of Hugo, Okla., Jackson, Carswell of Grovetown, Rose Mary Hojestek of South Haven, Miss., Sarah Ann Carswell of Grovetown, Robert Carswell of Warner Robins, Jackie Joyner of Sardis, Anna Carswell of Fayetteville, N.C. and Van Thompson of Washington State; three stepchildren, Bobby Larwson of Minnesota and T.A. Lones Williams
Lones Lee Williams, 62, of Waynesboro died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 at his residence. His funeral was 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, with the Rev. George Glenn officiating. Burial was in Pines Cemetery, Waynesboro. Mr. Williams, a native of Burke County, was employed as a distributor for the Coca Cola Bottling Company at Augusta for 38 years. He was a 1961 graduate of Waynesboro High and Industrial School. He was a deacon at the Metropolitan Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Kirby Gregory of Atlanta, Reginald Williams Sr. of Waynesboro and Lones Myron Williams of Sardis; three daughters, Victoria C. Williams, Christine Holmes and Tiffany L. Williams, all of Waynesboro; two sisters, Nora Walker of Waynesboro and Rose Hilton of Atlanta; a godson, Grayson Lawton of Augusta; 10 grandchildren; and a special devoted friend, Luberda Jenkins of Waynesboro. Active pallbearers were Octavious Anthony, Darryl Crumbley, Franklin Crumbley, Roberts Evans III, Dominic O. Jenkins, Malcom Jenkins, Willie James Jenkins Sr., Eddie Miles, Derrick Mitchell and Nathaniel Williams. Murzelle S. Brown
Ann Murzelle Smith Brown, 81, of Waynesboro died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 at Select Specialty Hospital in Augusta. Her funeral will be 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 30), at First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, with Dr. David Carter and the Revs. Ed Deen and R.O. Edenfield officiating. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Gardens, Waynesboro. Mrs. Brown, a native of Carrollton, had lived in Burke County a number of years. She had retired from the Social Security Administration and was a graduate of Wayne State University, Detroit, graduating with honors and obtaining her degree at the age of 54. She was supportive of the ministry of her late husband, the Rev. James Bruce Brown, and in the mid 1950s she was appointed pastor at a number of church in Michigan, including the Korean Church in Ann Arbor. She preached at four churches every Sunday that included a span of over 100 miles. She moved back to Waynesboro in 1991 where she was a member of the Waynesboro First United Methodist Church, where she was a teacher and member of the Lillian Powell Sunday School Class. She was a district director of lay speaking for the Statesboro district. At the age of 75, she received her training to be ordained as a Methodist minister, but had past the required retirement age. Survivors include two sons, Stephen Brown of San Francisco and Philip Brown and his wife, Sherry, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; two daughters, Barbara Katsurada and her husband, Masaru, of Ota, Japan, and Ruth Ann Phillips and her husband, Webb, of Warrington, Pa.; two sisters, Dorma S. Perry of Waynesboro and Josie S. Rangler of Centreville, Mich.; a brother, the Rev. J. Hyatt Smith of Waynesboro; and four grandchildren, Katie Brown, Claire Brown, Amanda Katsurada and Rei Katsurada. Active pallbearers will be nephews. Ollie Mae Braddy
Ollie Mae Braddy of Waynesboro died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002. Her funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Holly Spring Missionary Baptist Church in Warthen, with the Rev. Jackson officiating. Mrs. Braddy was a resident of Waynesboro. She had joined Holly Springs Baptist Church in Warthen at an early age. She was the wife of the late Milton Braddy. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Mills of Wrens and Dorothy J. Purdie, Martha Braddy and Sharon Braddy, all of Waynesboro; a son, Ray Braddy of Waynesboro; six sisters, Bertha Burton of Milledgeville, Louise Jones of Sandersville, Lino Mitts of Waynesboro, Minnie Tucker of Warthen, Rudene Horton and Bobbie Cummings both of Sparta; six brothers, Aaron Jones and Eulas Jones, both of Warthen, William Jones of Wrens, Melton Jones of Sandersville, John Cummings of Atlanta and Bennie Jones of Mitchell; and 18 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Michael Little, Keith Griffin, Albert Houston, Chris Hambersham, David Houston and Tyrone Flowers.
John Dinkins Jr.
John Rackley Dinkins Jr., 46, of Pleasant, S.C., died Tuesday, April 2, 2002.
Graveside services were 3 p.m., Friday, April 5, at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Harold Rowland of Waynesboro and the Rev. Dr. Paula Buford of Atlanta officiating. Mr. Dinkins, a native of Augusta, was a graduate of Darlington School in Rome and the University of Georgia in Athens, where he received a degree in nursery management and landscape architecture. He owned and operated Landscape Specialties in Charleston, S.C., where he served as landscape specialist at several plantations and numerous historic sites in the Charleston area. He has previously worked at Park Seed Company in Greenwood, S.C. and The Tropical Patio in Hilton Head, S.C. Survivors include two sisters, Linda Dinkins of Martinez and Kathy Dinkins Evans of Marietta; his stepfather, B.K. Anderson of Midville; and a nephew, John D. Evans of Marietta. Pallbearers were Doug Cates IV, B. Lamar Murray III, Cleve Mobley, Jesse Stone, Rocky Rockwell and Thomas Black.
