Jimmy S. Burnam
Mr. Jimmy Solomon Burnam, 68, of Savannah, Ga., passed away Tuesday night, July 8, 2003 at the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah following an extended illness.
Mr. Burnam, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was retired from the U.S. Army with over 22 years of service, and also retired from Civil Service. He served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the V.F.W. He was the son of the late Jesse Alfred "Buck" Burnam and the late Virchel Russ Burnam. He was preceded in death by one brother, the late Bobby Eugene Burnam, and one sister, the late Jessie Frances B. Thomas.
Survivors include: his wife, Jessie J. Moore Burnam of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Jeffrey Steve Burnam of Port Charles, Fl.; two daughters, Debbie Bernice Smith of Houston, Tx., and Phyllis Sue Cliatt of Pooler, Ga.; two sisters, Laverne Metts of Middleburg, Fl., and Barbara Sue Shepard of Ocalla, Fl.; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Leroy Spivey officiating. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery with Military Honors.
Casketbearers, Firing Squad, and Taps were performed by Personnel from Ft. Stewart of Hinesville, Ga.
Special musical selections "At The Crossing" and "Beulah Land" were rendered by the soloist, Rev. Clayton Dowd, with Mrs. Wendy Dowd at the piano.

Edwina Brown McDonald
Mrs. Edwina Brown McDonald, 65, of Pearson, Ga., passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Ga. following an extended illness.
Born January 25, 1938 in Cook County, Ga. Mrs. McDonald was the daughter of George Ed and Fannie Elaine Kirby Brown. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James McDonald.
Survivors include: two sons, Edwin McDonald of Pearson, Ga., and Roger McDonald, of Valdosta, Ga.; two sisters, Eloise McDonald and husband P.L. and Ann McMillan, both of Pearson, Ga.; two Grandchildren, two Great Grandchildren, and several Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. McDonald were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2003 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Dan O'Connell officiating. Special music "Amazing Grace" and "On The Wings Of A Dove" were presented by Fred McDonald and Tom McDonald, who accompanied themselves on the guitar. Michele White, organist, played soft music for the Prelude and Postlude. Interment followed in the Holy Family Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers were: Lloyd McDonald, Roy McDonald, Simon McDonald, Mathew McDonald, George Terrell, and Carl McKinnon.

Elton Davis
Mr. Elton Davis, 74, of Fairfax Community in Ware County, Ga., passed away Tuesday, July 8, 1928, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.
Mr. Davis, a native of Atkinson County, Ga., was born October 27, 2003, son of Orbie Davis, Sr., and the late Inez Corbitt Davis. He was a prominent farmer in the Fairfax community, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a member of the Axson Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include: wife, Eloise Adams Davis of Millwood, Ga.; one son, Randy Davis of Millwood, Ga.; one daughter, Diane Sweat of Millwood, Ga.; father, Orbie Davis, Sr., of Waycross, Ga.; four brothers, Lee L. Davis and wife, Betty, of Atkinson County, Ga., Bunk Davis and wife, Mary, of Axson, Ga., Billy Davis and wife, Cecile of Axson, Ga., Orbie Davis, Jr., and wife, Carole, of Waycross, Ga. ; five sisters, Luvelle Mullis of Axson, Ga., Jean Joyner and husband, Albert of Waycross, Ga., Mary Ann Zorn and husband, Bill, of Axson, Ga., Deloris Bennett and husband, Huey, of Millwood, Ga., and Evelyn Steele of Waycross, Ga.; four grandchildren, Katrina Sweat, Mark Davis, Julianne Davis, and Clint Davis; one great-grandchild, Tristan Davis; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 2 p.m., at the Axson Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Newton Cox and Rev. Clayton Davis officiating. Special musical selections "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and "Hallelujah Square" were rendered by Deloris Bennett, Betty Gail Davis, Mary Ann Zorn, Newton Cox and Cecile Davis with Betty Davis at the piano and Huey Bennett on the guitar. Betty Davis, pianist played soft music for the prelude and postlude.
Internment followed in the Axson Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were: Don Mullis, Charles John, Carl Bennett, Jerry Davis, Larry Barrett and Marvin McDaniel.
Honorary pallbearers were: nurses from Coffee Regional Medical Center Admission Unit.

Lois Marie Steverson Hall
Mrs. Lois Marie Steverson Hall, 83, of West Gordon Street, Douglas, Ga., passed away Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Hall, a native of Telfair County, Ga., was born January 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Alex Milton and Cora Lee Durden Steverson. She was a homemaker and the widow of the late Glenn Hall.
Survivors include: one daughter, Ruby Anderson and husband, Burnell, of Douglas, Ga.; Sons, Billy Hall and wife, Carolyn, and Johnny Hall, all of Fitzgerald, Ga., and Willis Hall of Broxton, Ga.; two sisters, Mazie Strickland of Mansfield, Oh., and Mildred Mullis of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Edward Steverson of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Mount Union Holiness Cemetery near Lax, Ga., with Rev. John Thomas officiating.

Cona Dell Jones Milani
Mrs. Cona Dell Jones Milani, 97, of Broxton Ga., passed away Sunday, May 25, 2003, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Milani, a native of White County, Ga., was born December 8, 1905, the daughter of the late Anse and Cora Bell Ash Jones. She was a homemaker, widow of the late Julius Milani, and a member of Broxton Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one sister, Iris Jones of Broxton, Ga.; three nephews, Charles Joe Jones of Smyrna, Ga., Robert T. Jones and Sam Jones, Jr., both of Broxton, Ga.; two nieces, Jimmie Sue Hunter of Broxton, Ga., and Jonelle Fales of Douglas, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Sims Funeral Home Chapel, Douglas, Ga., with Rev. Terry Reagin officiating. Soloist Lynn Reagin sang "Beulah Land" and "Sheltered In The Arms Of God," with Lois Mills, organist, providing soft music for the prelude and postlude. Burial followed at the Reedy Branch Church Cemetery, Broxton, Ga.

Sherman Lee Vaughan
Mr. Sherman Lee Vaughan, 49, of Powder Springs, Ga., entered into rest May 14, 2003, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, Douglas, Ga. Interment took place in the Grantham Cemetery, Douglas, Ga. Rev. Paul Murphy of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla., officiated. Dr. Diskin Morgan sang "Amazing Grace" and "Ten Thousand Years" as special music. Mrs. Lois Mills provided organ music for the service.
Mr. Vaughan was the son of Mrs. Ruby Dorothy Lee Vaughan of Augusta, Ga., and the late James Levi Vaughan, Jr. He was the grandson of the late Grover Cleveland Lee, Sr., and the late Sarah Ann Grantham Lee of Douglas, Ga. His paternal grandparents were the late James Levi Vaughan, Sr., and the late Dovie Sharp Vaughan of Columbia, S.C.
Mr. Vaughan was born April 12, 1954, in Columbia, S.C., and was a licensed electrician. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Brandon Hall, Dunwoody, Ga., and attended the University of South Carolina, S.C. He also attended the Citadel Camp for Boys, Charleston, S.C. Mr. Vaughan was a long time member of Curtis Baptist Church, Augusta, Ga., and a charter member of Martinez Baptist Church, Martinez, Ga.
Mr. Vaughan is also survived by his wife, Ida Vaughan of Powder Spring, Ga.; a sister, Miss Sylvia Vaughan of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Lee Nathaniel Vaughan of Evans, Ga.; and a daughter, Victoria Vaughan of Evans, Ga.
Active pallbearers were Mr. Freddy Lee, Mr. Robert E. Lee, Jr., Mr. Herbert Batten, Mr. James Minix, Mr. Greg Batten, and Mr. Al Spivey.

Marilee Jones Dean
Mrs. Marilee Jones Dean, 90, of North Grady Avenue, Douglas, Ga., passed away Friday, May 23, 2003, at home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Dean, a native of Candler County, Ga., was born October 20, 1912, the daughter of the late Henry Grady and Bonnie Lee Jones. Mrs. Dean, a graduate of the Georgia Southern University, Statesboro (formerly Teachers College), was employed with Georgia Power for several years. Then after her marriage to George W. Dean, they moved to Douglas from Swainsboro, Ga. (1939). She retired after 25 years of service with City of Douglas, 20 years as City Clerk. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she held offices in several ladies organizations, secretary and treasurer of the Susanna Wesley Class.
Survivors include: her husband of 65 years, George W. Dean of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Grady Dean of Claxton, Ga.; one sister, Doris Jones Daughtry of Louisville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Deana Murphy Graham of Covington, Ga., Jodi Murphy Blocker of Charlotte, N.C., Debra Haroon of Dunwoody, Ga., and William F. Dean of Claxton, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Mollie Graham and Emma Graham, both of Mansfield, Ga., Dean Haroon of Dunwoody, Ga., and Bryce Dean of Claxton, Ga. Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary George Murphy.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 26, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. James E. Duke, Jr., and Rev. James McIlrath officiating. Special music was as follows: the congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and soloist Jacque Hoyle sang "Rock Of Ages," with Tania Myers accompanying at the organ. Burial followed at the Blackshear City Cemetery, Blackshear, Ga.

Winder 'Wanda' McFadden
Ms. Winder "Wanda" McFadden, 49, of Ambrose, Ga., passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2003, folowing a brief illness.
Ms. McFadden, a native of Irwin County, Ga., was born February 20, 1954, the daughter of Lois McFadden. Helping to raise Winder "Wanda" were her loving grandparents, the late Ezekiel and Ella Watson. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1974. Ms. McFadden was employed by the Gold Kist Corporation for many years and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Ambrose, Ga.
Survivors include: one daughter, Shenita McFadden of Ambrose, Ga.; her mother, Lois McFadden of Ambrose, Ga.; one sister, Rosa Brockington (Danny Martin) of Ambrose, Ga.; two grandchildren, Kadijah and Sheparis Paulk, both of Ambrose, Ga.; four special nieces, Dematria Brockington, Tonya Brockington and Yakima Martin, all of Ambrose, Ga., and Deandra (Richard) Jones of Broxton, Ga.; one aunt, Mary Alice Bussey of Ben Salem, Pa.; one special friend, Lois Fletcher of Douglas, Ga.; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Marty Dewayne Amerson
Mr. Marty Dewayne Amerson, 23, of Dundee Road, West Green, Ga., passed away Saturday, May 10, 2003, as a result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.
Mr. Amerson, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born September 20, 1979, the son of Bobby Joe and Peggy Sue Amerson Pritchard. He was an auto mechanic and tire repairman.
Survivors include: his wife, Tabatha Jo Amerson of West Green, Ga.; two children, Bridgett Amerson and Dalton Amerson, both of West Green, Ga.; parents, Bobby Joe and Peggy Sue Amerson Pritchard of West Green, Ga.; one sister, Ashley Carver of West Green, Ga.; one step-brother, Jason Stone; and a special cousin, Miranda McKinnon.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the Broxton Church of God, with Rev. Joey Copeland officiating. Special music as follows: "When You Think of Me" and "Go Rest High on That Mountain" were selected CD's, and Lisa Bryan, Verneal Grantham, and Ted and Amber Burke sang "Amazing Grace," with Verneal Grantham accompanying at the piano. Josephine Gwendolyn "Jo" Smith Snow
Mrs. Josephine Gwendolyn "Jo" Smith Snow, 82, of North Grady Avenue, Douglas, Ga., passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga.
Mrs. Snow, a native of Butts County, Ga., was born May 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph Howard and Annie Jo Speir Smith. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, the widow of the late Johncie Godard Snow, and a member College Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Vickie Grantham and husband, Richard, of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Frankie Snow of Douglas, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kevin Grantham, Kade Grantham, Lee Grantham, Randy Snow, and Andrea McKinnon; three great-grandchildren, Brice Grantham, Tyler Snow, and Jared McKinnon. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by on son, Ronnie Snow.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home, with Dr. Stephen Hart officiating. Soloist John L. Deems sang "Amazing Grace" and "What A Day That Will Be," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Burial followed at the Douglas City Cemetery.

James "Jim" E. Carver
Mr. James "Jim" E. Carver, 71, of Atlanta, Ga., passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003.
Mr. Carver, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was the son of the late James W., and Evelyn Todd Carver. Maj. Carver served over 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and served in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. As a B52 Pilot, he flew over 199 missions during the Vietnam War. He was decorated with many awards which included earning his Senior Pilot Wings, Distinguished Flying Cross, Airman's medal with Seven Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force and Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Vietnam Service Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert marksmanship ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Carver was a local building contractor. He was the widow of the late Betty Jo Hodges Carver.
Survivors include: his daughter, Dr. Kimberly C. Harper of Warner Robins, Ga.; two sons, James R. Carver of Oceanside, Ca., and Tim L. Carver of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Lelouise Carver and Daphine Clement, both of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Brenda Baker of Vidalia, Ga.; six grandchildren, Tori Harper of Warner Robins, Ga., and Terri Terry, Kristie Terry, and James M. Carver, all of Oceanside, Ca., and Tim T.J. Carver, Brandie Rogers, and Whitney Howard, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.
Graveside services were held Friday, May 9, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Magnolia Park Cemetery with full military honors.

Mary Jane Presley
Mrs. Mary Jane Presley, 78, of Coffee County, Ga., passed away April 26, 2003, at Shady Acres Nursing Home.
Mrs. Presley, a native of Mora, Ga., was born July 14, 1925, the daughter of the late Matthew Davis and Roxie Johnson. She was a member of the Church of the Kingdom of God of Douglas, Ga. Mrs. Presley served as the church secretary, Sunday School teacher, a member of the Women's Auxiliary, and worked with the church's youth department.
Survivors include: her husband, Ira Presley; one son, Ira Presley, Jr. and wife, Martha Kate, of Douglas, Ga.; one daughter, LaVerne White and husband, Frank, of Houston, Tx.; five sisters, Ludell Davis of St. Petersburg, Fla., Annie Bell Moore of Ocilla, Ga., Carolyn Jay of Philadelphia, Pa., and Irell Long, and Pauline Roberts (Lucious), both of Douglas, Ga.; one brother, Troy Davis (Lillie) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Mable Presley of Douglas, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Willie Presley of Lake City, S.C.; three grandchildren, Tonya Davis (Johnnie), Dexter White (Mellodee), Frank R. White, special grandchildren, Bradley King, Dolly Moss, Betty Williams, Bobby (Janet) Northcutt, Lashonda Moss, Angel Vickers, Troyanna Vickers, and Brandon Northcutt, all of Douglas, Ga.; several nephews and cousins. Mrs. Presley was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Gale Patrick Presley, and one granddaughter, Veronica Presley.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 12 p.m., at the Church of the Kingdom of God, with pastor Jimmy Stewart presiding. Interment follow at the Douglas City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were grandsons and nephews of Mrs. Presley.
Honorary pallbearers were the ministers.

Ella Florence Brewton
Mrs. Ella Florence Brewton, 87, of Douglas, Ga., passed away April 24, 2003.
Mrs. Brewton, a native of Blitchton, Ga., was born June 13, 1916, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha Perry. She joined Mt. Sinai Freewill Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board until her health failed. She was the widow of the late Willie Clyde Brewton, Sr.
Survivors include: five children, Bertha (Arthur) Holmes of Savannah, Ga., Willie Clyde Brewton, Jr., David (Nancy) Brewton, Nathaniel Brewton, and Linda Curtis, all of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Rosa Lee Aldrich of Pooler, Ga.; 24 grandchildren, 51 great-granchildren, and 10 great-great-granchildren; one sister-in-law, Beaula Brewton of Tifton, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Mrs. Brewton was preceded in death by four children, Kayrin, Charlie, Alexander, and Barbara Ann Brewton.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 2:30 p.m., at Mt. Sinai Freewill Baptist Church, with Elder Davis, pastor, officiating. Special music was a solo by Willie Davis. Interment followed at Douglas City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Johnny Curtis, Alexander Brewton, Derrick Brewton, Marcus Hancock, Randall Grady, Sinatra Brewton, Jermaine Brewton, and Mike Shaw.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion.
