Francis Lee Cutno
Mr. Francis Lee Cutno, 86, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Monday, January 24, 2005.
Mr. Cutno, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born on July 14, 1918, the son of the late Lottie Cutno. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the House of God Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn Cutno of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Bobby Cutno and wife Tina of Summerville, S.C.; one daughter, Deborah Matthews and husband Dennis of Boynton Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Eric Matthews of Boynton Beach, Fla., Travis Matthews of Atlanta, Ga., and Christopher Cutno, and Alexander Cutno both of Summerville, S.C.; two great- grandchildren, Jada Matthews and Travarez Matthews both of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one god- daughter, JoAnn Curtis of Douglas, and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 29, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the House of God on Cherry Street in Douglas, Ga., with TR Elder Jerry Thomas officiating. Musical selections were rendered by soloist Dorothy Dumes and the House of God Choir. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Eric Matthews, Travis Matthews, Christopher Cutno, Alexander Cutno and Christopher Floyd.
Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Dumes, Carl Lott, Nathaniel Thomas, Miles Newton, H.M. Speight, Jr., and Roosevelt Graves.

Tillman Spivey, Sr.
Mr. Charlie Tillman Spivey, Sr., 95, of the Satilla community, passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 19, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.
Mr. Spivey, a native and lifelong resident of Coffee County, Ga., was the son of the late John Nelson Spivey and the late Mattie Bell Kight Spivey. He was the widower of the late Linnie Mae Davis Spivey, and a member of Jowers Chapel Holiness Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Secretary for many years.
Survivors include: three daughters, Rosa Lee Hester and Hazel Whitley, both of Douglas, Ga., and Debra Roberts and husband Joe Roy of Broxton, Ga.; one sister, Sallie Cady of Douglas, Ga.; 36 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by seven sons, J.D. Spivey, Homer Lee Spivey, Hansel Spivey, Nelson Spivey, Isaac Spivey, Tillman Spivey, Jr., and Ronald David Spivey; two daughters, Emma Lou Morgan and Lounell Spivey; two sons-in-law, Charles Amerson and Elzie Morgan; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Willie Spivey, Leo Spivey, Dewey Spivey and Jerry Spivey; and one sister, Matilda S. Arnold.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Jowers Chapel Holiness Baptist Church with Rev. Leroy Spivey, Rev. Donnie Sloan, and Rev. Jimmie Sayer officiating. Special musical selections, “Stroll Over Heaven,” “Where We Will Never Grow Old,” and “I’ll Be Waiting At The River For You,” were rendered by Faye Adams, Chris Purvis, and Carolyn Wright, with Bonnie Musgrove accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in the Tanner Cemetery with Rev. Gene Chaney conducting the committal services.

Fannie Deen
Mrs. Fannie Louise Harkleroad Deen, 92, of Broxton, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Deen, a native of Hawkins County, Tennessee was born on October 29, 1912, the daughter of the late Conley T. Sr., and Ella Orfield Harkleroad. She was a homemaker, the widow of the late George Deen and a member of Reedy Brach Baptist Church.
Survivors: four daughters, Phoebe D. Haskins and Lib Roberts and husband Larry all of Broxton, Ga., Barbara D. Chestnut and husband Gene, of Lake City, Fla., Colline D. Ricketson and husband J.M., of Denton, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Ellen Deen of Broxton, Ga.; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jo Ann Burkett of West Green, Ga.; two brothers, Stanley Harkleroad of Waycross, Ga., and, Fernell Harkleroad of West Green, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Deen had one son, Ottis L. Deen and one daughter, Jenny Lee Deen who preceded her in death.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Reedy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Den Weniger officiating. Soloist, Wayne Fales sang, “Beulah Land” and soloist, Jamie Shrouder sang, “I’m Taking A Vacation,” also the congregation sang, “I’ll Meet You In The Morning” with, Evelyn Weniger accompanying at the piano. Soloist, Jamie Shrouder sang, “Amazing Grace,” at the gravesite. Interment followed in the Reedy Branch Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Jim Deen, Benny Dockery, Ken Corbitt, Bryson Lott, Tracy Burke, A. J. Saaed and Bruce Cato.

Angela Wimberly
Ms. Angela Faye Wimberly, 48, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.
Ms. Wimberly was born on October 17, 1956, to O’Neal Wimberly and the late Agnes Paulk. She was a member of Pine Street Church of God and was currently employed at Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Douglas, Ga.
Survivors include: her mother, Elnora Strickland of Douglas, Ga.; her father, O’Neal Wimberly of Douglas, Ga.; four sons, Corey Wimberly, Henry Townsend, Jr., Patrick Townsend and Merican Townsend and wife Sandra all of Douglas, Ga.; one daughter, Kenya Townsend of Douglas, Ga.; three sisters, Jacquelyn Higginbottom of Miami, Fla., Linda Fraizer and husband Clarence of Valdosta, Ga., and Sharon Williams and husband Jessie of Douglas, Ga.; eight brothers, Bruce Paulk of Chicago, Ill., Morris Paulk of Pearson, Ga., Albert O’Neal Wimberly and wife Evelyn of Hazlehurst, Ga., and Chris Wimberly, James O’Neal Wimberly and wife Jewell, Stanley Wimberly, Terry Wimberly and wife Anne, and Tracy Wimberly, all of Douglas, Ga.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. One daughter preceded Ms. Wimberly in death.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Pine Street Church of God in Douglas, Ga., with Pastor Betty Johnson officiating. Musical selections were rendered by the Pine Street Church choir and soloist Angie Johnson. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Hattie Martin
Mrs. Hattie Wynn Martin, 56, passed away on January 15, 2005.
Mrs. Martin was born in Irwin County, Ga., on September 1, 1948, to the late Evelyn Wynn and Michael Lee Moore. She attended Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Raymond Martin of Douglas, Ga.; five daughters, Jennifer Laster, Susan Campbell and husband Anthony, and Charlene Wynn, all of Ocilla, Ga., Rachel Martin of Douglas, Ga., and Michelle Williams and husband Hopson of Ashburn, Ga.; seven sons, Lamar Martin and wife Misty, Bernard Martin and wife Kendra, Tim Martin and wife Kris, Anthony Martin and wife Melinda, Steve Martin and wife Ashley, Chris Martin and wife Mandy, and Nick Martin and wife Misty, all of Douglas, Ga.; a special niece, Terrell Wynn of Ocilla, Ga.; four sisters, Hazel Jordan and husband Charlie, Lois Wynn, Carolyn Young and husband Willie D., all of Ocilla, Ga., and Louise Thrower of Thomson, Ga.; three brothers, Herman Wynn and wife Mae of Jacksonville, Fla., Hayward Wynn of Ocilla, Ga., and Jerry Wynn and wife Carolyn of Fitzgerald, Ga.; 31 grandchildren; one great- grandchild, Jelissa; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Martin had one daughter, Amanda Denise Martin and one son, Jason Lorenzo Martin, two great-grandchildren, Edenfield and Courtney; and two sisters, Ruth Ann and Alice, who preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at 3 p.m., at St. Johns Baptist Church in Wray, Ga., with Pastor Betty Johnson officiating. Special musical selections were rendered by Stacey and Lisa Davis and soloist Corey Wynn. Interment followed in the Paulk Cemetery in Ocilla, Ga.
Active pallbearers were Wade Wynn, Donald Wynn, Jimmy Raper, Ronald Wynn, Ray Wynn, and Andy McKinnon.

Thelma Lee Higgins Burkett
Mrs. Thelma Lee Higgins Burkett, 72, of Eufaula, Ala., formerly of Coffee County, Ga., passed away Friday, January 28, 2005, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala.
Mrs. Burkett, a native of Appling County, Ga., was born September 15, 1932, the daughter of the late John Bell, Sr. and Ruth Malissia Black Higgins. She was a homemaker, the widow of the late Julius Chester Burkett, and a member of Chester Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Eufaula, Ala.
Survivors include: two daughters, Kaye Ludlam and husband, Ferrel, and Debra Burkett, all of Eufaula, Ala.; three sons, Tony Taylor and wife, Linda of Ocala, Fla., Dale Burkett and wife, (Meloni, of Douglas, Ga., and Chet Burkett of Atlanta, Ga.; two step-sons, Jerry Burkett and wife, Karen, and Wallace Burkett, all of Macon, Ga.; one brother, John B. Higgins, Jr., of Jacksonville Fla.; one sister, Ruth H. Story of Douglas, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2005, at Burkett Baptist Church near West Green, Ga., with Rev. Gene White officiating. Soloist Cathy White sang “Amazing Grace” a cappella. Interment followed in the Burkett Church Cemetery.

Martha G. Tyre
Mrs. Martha Giddens Tyre, 93, of Pearson, Ga., passed away on Saturday morning, January 22, 2005 at Shady Acres Convalescent Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.
A native of Clinch County, Ga., Mrs. Tyre was born on December 27, 1911, the daughter of the late Ken Jasper, Sr., and the late Mattie Lewis Giddens. She the widow of the late Paul Tyre, Sr., a homemaker and a member of Refuge Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Paul Tyre, Jr., and wife Janie of Pearson, Ga.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., on Monday, January 24, 2005, at Refuge Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Alton Carver and Elder Alvin Johnson officiating. Special musical selections “Amazing Grace,” “Rock Of Ages,” and “Dear Friends Farewell,” were rendered by the Primitive Baptist Church singers. Interment followed in the Satilla Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Martha Jane Chaney
Mrs. Martha Jane Chaney, 54, of Broxton, Ga., passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2005, at Plymrya Park Medical Center in Albany, Ga.
Mrs. Chaney, a native of Deetsville, Ala., was born on July 5, 1950, the daughter of the late William Joe and Janie Carrie Tatum Carr. She was a farrowing pig manager and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include: two daughters, Carrie Hayes and Kindal Chaney, both of Broxton, Ga.; one brother, Howell Carr of Forsyth, Ga.; two step-children, Heather Chaney and Amber Chaney, both of Frankfort, Ky., and one nephew, Allen Carr of Stockbridge, Ga.

Mary Katherine Stovall
Mary Katherine Stovall, 98, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Friday, January 20, 2005, at Shady Acres Convalescent Center in Douglas, Ga.
Ms. Stovall was born on October 21, 1906, in Fitzgerald, Ga., the daughter of the late Walter Louis Stovall, Sr., and the late Mary Alice Woodliff Stovall. She taught school in Broxton and Lumberton, N.C., then worked for the Red Cross in San Francisco, Calif., for several years. She returned to Douglas as the Director of the Coffee County Welfare Department (now DFACS) and then received her Masters degree from Peabody Institute in Nashville, Tenn. She taught school in Savannah, Douglas and Pearson, Ga., where she retired in 1985. Ms. Stovall was a member of Douglas First United Methodist Church, where she taught the Susannah Wesley Sunday School class for many years, the UDC, DAR and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a very loving and generous person, not only to her family, but also to her many friends.
Survivors include: one brother, George W. Stovall of Macon, Ga., formerly of Douglas, Ga.; three nieces, Lynn Stovall Cass and husband Michael of Macon, Ga., Mary Stovall Barlow and husband Jim of Marietta, Ga., and Jamie Stovall House and husband Ben of Wilson, Ala.; one nephew, Walter Louis Stovall III and wife Sue of New York, N.Y.; several great-nieces, and great-nephews, and one sister-in-law Emma Lee Stovall of Marietta, Ga. Ms. Stovall was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shady Acres, 1310 W. Gordon Street, Douglas, GA 31533 or First United Methodist Church in Douglas, Ga., in memory of Katherine Stovall.

Geneva Pauline Killian Metts
Mrs. Geneva Pauline Killian Metts, 68, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following a brief illness.
Mrs. Metts, a native of Poplar Bluff, Mo., was born June 17, 1936, the daughter of the late Noal Killian and the late Zada Catherine Marshall Killian. She was married for 30 years to Joseph Dow Smith, Sr., of Kennett, Mo., who preceded her in death in 1991, and formerly to Eston Metts of Pearson, Ga.
Survivors include: five children, Cathy Threatt and husband, Stanley, of Douglas, Ga., Thomas Morehead and wife, Sue, of Phoenix, Ariz., Terry Savanich and wife, Gail, of Cleveland, Ohio, Gregory Hodge of St. Louis, Mo., and David Hodge of Summerville, S.C.; two brothers, Mel Killian and Don Killian, both of San Antonio, Tex.; two sisters, Leola Mitchell and Nelta Howard; 18 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Metts was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin Killian, Irvin Killian, and Billy Killian.
Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home on Sunday, January 23, 2005, at 4 p.m. with Bro. Marty Wilkes presiding. Special musical selections, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beulah Land,” were presented by Patty Kirkland, with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Her son, Tom Morehead, gave a farewell tribute. Interment followed at Satilla Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers were members of Green Acres County Fire Station #9, Clarence Wright, Casey Wright, James Graham, Terrance Story, David Hester, and John Hersey on behalf of Wal-Mart Super Center, of which Geneva was an employee in the garden center for the past 14 years.
Honorary pallbearers were Wal-Mart Super Center associates, Douglas Lions Club members, and Douglas Enterprise staff.

Agnes Benson
Mrs. Agnes Elizabeth Mullis Benson, 84, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga.
Mrs. Benson, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born April 24, 1920, the daughter of the late James Monroe and Ethel Gleason Mullis. She was the widow of the late Henry Esby Benson and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Libby Smith and one son, J.H. Benson, both of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters, Doris Fowler of Waycross, Ga., and Ruby Glosson of Alma, Ga.; four grandchildren, Billy Benson, Fran Merritt, Michele Newell and Lee Gray; five great- grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Benson had one brother, Wilbert Mullis, and three sisters, Hazel Mullis, Pauline Mullis and Lou Eva Pridgen, who preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the Sims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Anderson and Rev. John Anderson officiating. Soloist Steve Hyde sang “I Sure Miss You” and “I Can Only Imagine” with Lois Mills, pianist, providing soft music for the prelude and postlude. Interment followed in the New Hope Church Cemetery.

Jimmy L. Kirkland
Mr. Jimmy Leggett Kirkland, 58, of Townsend, Ga., passed away early Monday morning, January 24, 2005, at the Southeastern Medical Center in Brunswick, Ga., following a brief illness.
Mr. Kirkland, a native of Nicholls and Coffee County, Ga., was a retired civil service employee and the son of the late Hunter Kirkland and the late Louise Elizabeth Whitley Kirkland. He attended Darien Church of God in Darien, Ga.
Survivors include: his wife, Sheila Denise Whitten Kirkland of Townsend, Ga.; one daughter, April Denise Kirkland of Townsend, Ga.; one son, Ross Anthony Thomas of North Carolina; one sister, Dorothy Ann Fite of N.C.; 2 two brothers, Ronnie Kirkland of Darrien, Ga., and Jerry Kirkland of Jesup, Ga.; one granddaughter, Jasmine Lee McMillan of Townsend, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Whaley officiating. Special musical selections included “Amazing Grace,” presented by soloist and pianist Rev. Tommy Whaley and “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” presented by taped music and gravesite, “Build My Mansion,” was rendered by soloist, Rev. Tommy Whaley. Interment followed in the Harrell Grove Cemetery near Douglas, Ga.
