Myrtle K. Hayman
Myrtle “Myrt” Knight Hayman, 87, of Augusta died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 28), at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, with Dr. Francis Ford officiating. The family of Mrs. Hayman will assemble at Hillcrest at 10:45 a.m.
Mrs. Hayman was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Hayman of Augusta.
Survivors include a special friend, W.H. Harper Sr.; two caretakers, Paul Stone and Brenda Holloway; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Sgt. Jack E. Johnson II
Sgt. Jack E. Johnson II, 25, of Hephzibah died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 in McAlester, Okla., from injuries received in an automobile accident.
His funeral was 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the DeLoach Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, with Chaplain Capt. Douglas Lax and Tracy Walker officiating. Burial was at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, with full military honors accorded.
Sgt. Johnson was a native and lifelong resident of Richmond County. He was a 1995 graduate of A.R. Johnson High School and was of the protestant faith. He had served four years with the U.S. Marines and was on active duty with the U.S. Army National Guard. He was stationed in McAlester. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Rozzie and Willard Johnson of Sardis.
Survivors include his parents, Jack and Lynda Johnson of Hephzibah; a sister, Kristin Johnson of Hephzibah; a brother, Matthew “Matt” Johnson of Hephzibah; and his maternal grandparents, Lucille and Charles Hamill of Kingston, Tenn.
Marine Honor Guard served as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Johnson, Adam Patterson, Heath Meador, T.J. Godbee, Timmy Jackson and Keith Osborn.
Marjorie Hillis Odom
Marjorie Hillis Odom, 89, of Waynesboro died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002 at Burke Medical Center. Her funeral was 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the DeLoach Funeral Home Chapel in Way-nesboro, with Dr. David Carter officiating. Burial was in Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Odom, a native and lifelong resident of Burke County, was a Methodist and a member of Bethesda Methodist Church (Molly Pond), in Burke County. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fulwod Newton Odom.
Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Scott of Augusta, Mildred Seymour of Grier, S.C. and Muriel Bell of Sylvania.
Pallbearers were David Hillis, Ashley Hillis, James Roberds, Dr. Mike Scott, John Scott and Harold Seymour.
Robert L. Wright Sr.
Robert Louis “R.L.” Wright Sr., 71, of Jamaica, N.Y., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in Hemp-stead, N.Y.
His funeral was 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Carl C. Burnett Funeral Home, Inc. Chapel in Hempstead, with the Rev. C.E. Mobley officiating. Burial was in Calverton National Cemetery. Mr. Wright was a member, deacon, elder and clerk of session at Westminster Bethany Presbyterian Church (USA) in Brooklyn. He attended Boggs Academy and Swift Memorial Junior College in Rogersville, Tenn. and served in the U.S. Air Force as a Communications Specialist before receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. After his discharge he continued his education at night and received a degree in accounting from the Collegiate Business Institute in 1959. He worked as an accountant in the food service distribution industry for more than 30 years and was employed by Peltz Foods, a division of Chipwich Corporation as Accounting Controller and Distribution Director prior to his retirement in 1992. Survivors include his widow, Emma Jean Hightower; three daughters, Rena Wright of Florence, N.J., Melanie Adamson of Jamaica, N.Y. and Courtney Thomas of St. Albans, N.Y.; a son, Robert Wright Jr. of Jamaica; two sons-in-law, Richard Wright and Lonnie Thomas Sr.; a brother, Leroy Wright of Augusta; two sisters, Mildred Clay of Philadelphia and Lela W. Stone of Evans; and three grandchildren, Bianca Adamson, Brittney Adamson and Lonnie Louis Thomas Jr.
Quinten Gresham Sr.
Quinten G. Gresham Sr. of Keysville died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta.
His funeral was 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at John I. Blackburn Presbyterian Church, Boggs Academy in Keysville, with the Rev. Scottie Swinney officiating. Burial was in Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Keysville.
Mr. Gresham, a native of Keysville, lived most of his life in Augusta. He was a graduate of Boggs Academy in Keysville and was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II. He earned the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with a Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the American Defense Service Medal. He retired from civil service as an upholsterer at Fort Gordon and was a member of John I. Blackburn Presbyterian Church and the Keysville Concerned Citizens.
Survivors include his widow, Mayor Emma Gresham of Keysville; two sons, the Rev. Quinten and Carolyn Gresham Jr. of Stone Mountain and Harold and Sharon Gresham of Augusta; three daughters, the Rev. LaVerne and Charles Comer of Augusta, Lola Russell of Stone Mountain and Kay G. and Carlos Morrison of Griffin; a daughter-in-law, Emma H. Gresham of Austell; a stepson, Thomas and Lola Clark of Augusta; three adopted sons, Tyrone and Mary Brooks of Atlanta, Sammy Hughes and the Rev. James and Alberta Clark of Waynesboro; two brothers-in-law, Herman and Ann Rhodes of Philadelphia and Robert Jackson Sr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Stephanie, Quin-ten III, Che’, Terri, Joi, Laneko, Harold, Alexis, Steven, Cassidy, Stephanie and Jameson; and six great-grandchildren, Richard, Jessica, Curtis Jr., Kenneth, Kiandrick and Ameer Quinten. Charles F. Degenhardt Sr.
Charles Frederick Degenhardt Sr., 86, of Savannah, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 in Candler Hospital. His funeral will be 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 4), at Magnolia Baptist Church in Perkins, with the Rev. Richard Daniels officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Degenhardt, a native of New York City, N.Y., lived in Millen prior to moving to Savannah in 1959. He was owner and operator of the local Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company and retired after 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II and was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Edward Degenhardt.
Survivors include his widow, Dorothy P. Degenhardt of Savannah; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles F. Degen-hardt Jr. and Judy Degenhardt of Savannah and Walter P. Degenhardt of Waynesboro; a brother, William Degenhardt of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Helen Pierce of Richmond, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Christine Degenhardt; five grandchildren, Charles F. Elizabeth Carpenter
Elizabeth Hicks Carpenter, 49, of Waynesboro died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002 at her residence after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her funeral was 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, with Pat Reuss, Rector, officiating. Burial was in St. Michael’s Memory Gardens. Mrs. Carpenter was born and raised in Dublin and lived in Augusta from 1980-1999. She was a registered nurse at University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for 19 years, retiring in 1999. She moved to Waynes-boro in Nov. 2000. She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Darby Carrere and Cathy Carpenter of Atlanta; and a granddaughter, Caitlin Elizabeth Carpenter of Folly Beach, S.C. John Thomas Chance
John Thomas Chance, 79, of Waynesboro died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002 at his residence. His funeral was 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Magnolia Baptist Church in Perkins, with the Rev. Richard Daniel officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery in Perkins. Mr. Chance, a native and lifelong resident of Burke County, was a retired cattleman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was wounded in Italy July 10, 1944, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Waynesboro Masonic Lodge No. 274 and received his 50-year membership pen. He was also a member of the Waynesboro Shrine Club, the American Legion Post No. 120 and Magnolia Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Jonnie Mae North Chance of Waynesboro; a daughter, Catherine Chance Fouche’ of Waynesboro; a son, Thomas W. Chance of Warner Robins; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Wayne Burke, Wallace Quick, Tom Chance, Brandon Chance, Tommy Fouche’ and Johnny McMillan. Honorary pallbearers were George DeLoach, Pete Parker, Douglas Cates, Dennis Taylor and L.V. Jenkins.

Frances R. Miller
Frances Robinson Miller, 81, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 at Sunrise Oaks Assisted Living in Port Orange, Fla. Mrs. Miller, a native of Gou-gh, moved to Daytona Beach in 1950 from Athens. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1955 and had retired after teaching for 25 years at Mainland High and Junior High schools. Survivors include her widower, James Miller; three sons, W. Randy Miller of Daytona Beach, James Miller Jr. of Columbia, S.C. and Robbie Miller of Fairfield, Idaho; a brother, Luther Robinson of Waynes-boro; and six grandchildren. Howell C. Joyner
Howell Caloway Joyner Jr., 81, of Waynesboro died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta.Graveside services were 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating.
Mr. Joyner was a native of Burke County and lived most of his adult life in Waynesboro. He was retired from the Dept. of Army in Washington, D.C., where he was a civil servant, working at the Pentagon as a Civilian Logistics Officer. He retired in 1959. He then returned to Waynesboro, where he was a freelance photographer for many years with The True Citizen. He was a Baptist and a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howell C. Joyner Sr. and Marie Ste-phens Joyner. Survivors include a sister, Patricia Joyner Rackley of Way-nesboro; a nephew, J. Frank Rackely III of Waynesboro; three great-nieces, Marie R. Ful-mer, Helen R. Goodwin and Bar-bara C. Rackley, all of Virginia; three great-great-nieces, Megan Fulmer, Alex Goodwin and Pat-ricia Goodwin; and two great-great-nephews, Tommy Fulmer and Jesse Goodwin.
Laura Bush Wimberly
Laura Bush Wimberly of Waynesboro died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at University Hospital in Augusta. Her funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at McKinnie Bran-ch Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.E. Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wimberly, a native of Burke County, was a retired processor at Castleberry’s. She was a member of McKinnie Branch Baptist Church where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, a deaconess and a member of the food committee.
Survivors include her widower, Bob Wimberly Sr.; three sons, Frank and Margaret Wimberly, Bob Jr. and Mary Jane Wimberly and Eugene Wimberly; six daughters, Bobbie Jean Wimberly and Willie Patterson, Lauretha Wimberly and Thomas Brown, Betty Wimberly and Melvin Streetman, Florence Wimberly and Eddie Scott, Marjorie Wimberly Brown and Erica Wimberly; two brothers, Charles Alvin Bush and Kleopatrick Bush, both of Augusta; four sisters, Josephine Allen, Lillian Walker and Margaret Warthern, all of Augusta, and Betty Walker of Atlanta; and 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Lindsay Robinson, Otis Brown, Melvin Streetman Jr., John Burton, Frank Wimberly, Barrett Wimberly, Tony Washington and Thomas Brown.
Marie Johnson
Marie Johnson, 70, of Waynesboro died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002 at Burke Medical Center. Her funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Charles Utley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery and repast in the church dining hall. Mrs. Johnson, a native of Waynesboro, joined EcElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church in Waynesboro during her school days and attended the gray schoolhouse out front of the current church. She had worked for many families in Waynesboro and also had worked as a café hostess in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Lula Johnson; three sisters, Louise Green, Janie Mae Hope and Maggie Lou Burton; and a brother, Ruben “Shag” Johnson. Survivors include six daughters, Emma J. Williams and Jon Williams Sr. of West Orange, N.J., Lula B. Moore of Waynes-boro, Gaynell J. and Jimmy Jackson of West Trenton, N.J., Jo Ann Johnson of Hephzibah, Roberta Johnson of Waynesboro and Sheryl Lynn J. Houston and David Houston Sr. of Waynes-boro; two sons, Amos Johnson and Ella Douglas of Waynesboro and Kenneth Bernard Johnson of Augusta; a sister, Polly Johnson; 21 grandchildren, Jon-Jon, Erin Sr., Little Jay, Samara, Cierra, Karell, Simeon, Jamond, Danielle, Teddy, Tara Marie, Christopher Norman, Whitney, Jamond, Chavous, Roshena, Zandra, David Jr., Kendra, Chris and Aaron; and four great-grandchildren.
