Carol G. Williams
Mr. Carol G. Williams, 67, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Friday, August 27, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga., following an extended illness.
Mr. Williams was born in Cleburne County, Ala., October 23, 1936, the son of the late Harvey O'Neal Williams and Dicie "Doris" Chandler Williams. He moved to Douglas as a young teenager.
For 35 years, Mr. Williams served his community as a dedicated police officer for the City of Douglas, during which time he was assigned to the District Attorney's Office assisting Dewey Hayes, Sr. He also served as Deputy Coroner, assisting Neil Sims, for 20 years. He was a member of the National District Attorneys Association and the International Association of Identification. In 1964, The Senior Teen Club honored him for his service to the youth of Douglas.
In 1979, Mr. Williams was appointed by Gov. George Busbee as Lieutenant Colonel, Aide De Camp, Governor's staff. Also, in 1983, he was appointed this same honor by Gov. Joe Frank Harris. In 1993, the Coffee County Exchange Club honored him as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. In 1994, he was honored by the City of Douglas as Employee of the Quarter.
Survivors include: his wife, Sue Hurley Williams; two daughters, Suzanne W. Wade of Ocilla, Ga., and Diane W. Giddens and husband, Windell, of Douglas, Ga.; two grandsons, Sammy Giddens of Douglas, Ga., and B. J. Wade of Ocilla, Ga.; one granddaughter, Ireland Giddens of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters, Brenda Purvis of Douglas, Ga., and Rita Deen and husband, Buddy, of Broxton, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, August 30, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Douglas, Ga., with Rev. David Martin speaking of special family memories, Judge Dwayne Gillis gave the Eulogy, with Rev. Richard Nichols officiating. Special tape selections of "On the Wings of a Dove" and "I Know Where I Am" were presented and soloist Dr. Diskin Morgan sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Lois Mills. Interment followed at the Douglas City Cemetery where Dr. Morgan led the attending congregation in singing "Amazing Grace."

George Willis Dean
Mr. George Willis Dean, 93, of Statesboro, Ga., formerly of Douglas, Ga., passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2004, in Bulloch County, Ga.
Mr. Dean, a native of Pierce County, Ga., was born January 3, 1911, the son of the late George Washington and Eliza Wolfe Dean. He was a salesman and the widower of the late Marilee Jones Dean. His church membership was at the Douglas First United Methodist Church; where he was former president of the Methodist Men and the Roberts Breedlove Sunday-School Class.
Survivors include: one son, Grady and wife, June Dean of Claxton, Ga.; sisters, Eleanor Gamble and Betty Day of Marietta,Ga.; grandchildren, Deana Graham, Jodi Blocker, Debra Haroon, and Bill Dean; six great-grandchildren,
Graveside services and Interment were held 11 a.m., Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Blackshear City Cemetery in Blackshear, Ga., with Rev. Benji Varnell officiating.

Euretha 'Rita' Carswell
Ms. Euretha "Rita" Carswell, 53, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2004, following a brief illness.
Ms. Carswell was born January 12, 1951, the daughter of Raymond and Eudell Carswell. She was a teacher at Ambrose Elementary School for 27 years. During her tenure with the Coffee County Board of Education, she served as the president of the local chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators. Additionally, she was a member of the National Educators Association. In 1985, she was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award and was decorated with numerous other awards and recognitions throughout her tenure in education, as well as the church and civic organization. She also worked at Wal-Mart Super Center as a Customer Service Manager.
Survivors include: one son, Timothy Leshan (Nakiya) Carswell of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Tosha Latrece (Donald) Hill of Douglas, Ga.; grandchildren, Shayla, Alphonso Jr., Lashauna, Amaya, Prince-Deshon, Ayanna, and Kamau; two sisters, Shirley Carswell of Douglas, Ga., and Dorothy Carswell of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Freddie L. Carswell and wife, Vivian, of Douglas, Ga.; Raymond Lee Carswell and wife, Beatrice, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at 2 p.m., with Elder Randolph D. Scott, Sr., pastor, and Bishop Lorenzo Moore, presiding prelate, HOGSIC, officiating. Special music was provided by The Hightower Sisters of Jacksonville, Fla., soloist Deborah Grady, and Min. A. Henry Thomas and the Hightower Memorial Temple Sanctuary Choir.
Active pallbearers were Charles Pugh, Rich Watkins, Curtis Hicks, Avery Daniels, Edwin Taylor, Casey Roberts, Charles Wadley, Calvin Smith, Albert Thomas, and Matt Roberts.

Elsie Isabelle Brower
Mrs. Elsie Isabelle Brower, 90, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Thursday, October 14, 2004 at home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Brower, a native of Nassau County, NY, was born June 6, 1914, the daughter of the late Franklin and Adelyne Mae Nohearnz Chester. She was a homemaker and the widow of the late Warren Richardson Brower.
Survivors include: two sons, Warren Brower, Jr. of Sorrento, Fla., and Richard L. Brower of Red Bank, IN; two daughters, Sharon Amburgery of Live Oak, Fla., Roberta G. Moelius of Douglas, Ga.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Arnold Wayne Johnson
Mr. Arnold Wayne Johnson, 54, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2004, following a brief illness.
Mr. Johnson, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born February 20, 1950, the son of Ruth Woods Johnson Hodge and the late Arnold Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired carpenter.
Survivors include: his wife, Lanita Tanner Johnson of Douglas Ga.; two sons, Anthony Wayne Johnson and wife, Roz, and Arnold Bruce Johnson and wife, Jennifer, all of Athens Ga.; one daughter, Rachel Louise (Shyea) Courson of Douglas Ga.; his mother, Ruth Woods Johnson Hodge of Douglas, Ga., one sister, Julie Johnson Harper of Douglas, Ga.; six grandchildren, and two step-sons, A.J. Burch and John Burch, both of Douglas, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2004, at Hebron Baptist Church, with Rev. Den Weniger officiating. Soloist Glenda Courson sang "Amazing Grace" and "Stroll Over Heaven," with Rev. Den Weniger accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in the Hebron Church Cemetery.

Glenda S. Partridge
Mrs. Glenda Sue Joiner Partridge, 53, of Douglas, Ga., passed away early Monday morning, October 18, 2004, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following a brief illness.
Mrs. Partridge, a native of Atkinson County, Ga., was a retired stock clerk with the local Wal-Mart store. She was the daughter of the late Roscoe Joiner and the late Rita Marie Chaput Joiner.
Survivors include: her husband, Roger N. Partridge, Sr., of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Roger N. Partridge, Jr., of Mass.; four daughters, Melissa Lee Watkins, Kerry Lynn Carpenter, and Amanda Jean Partridge, all of Douglas, Ga., and Candy Ann Partridge of Mass.; four brothers, Richard Joiner of Mendon, Mass., Leon Joiner of Douglas, Ga., Larry Joiner of Willacoochee, Ga., and Charles Edward Joiner of Conn.; three sisters, Margie Black, Rebecca Yawn and Lisa Yawn all of Douglas, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mrs. Partridge was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Joiner.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 22, 2004 at 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at a later date.

Delouise Henderson Crosby
Mrs. Delouise Henderson Crosby, 73, of Axson, Ga., passed away Thursday, October 14, 2004, at her residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Crosby, a native of Madison County, Fla., was born March 23, 1931, the daughter of the late William Allen Henderson and the late Cynthia Morgan Henderson. She was a homemaker, a member of Pearson Church of God of Prophecy, and the widow of the late Allen Crosby.
Survivors include: four sons, Robert Crosby and wife, Bonnie, of Sylvester, Ga., Hardy Crosby and wife, Lona, of Axson, Ga., Leon Marshall Crosby and wife, Donna, of Poulan, Ga., and Allen DeWayne Crosby of Axson, Ga.; four daughters, Mary Rainwater and husband, Russ, of Homerville, Ga., Lurainie Delk, and husband, W.M., of Pearson, Ga., Linnie Faye Moore and husband, Ricky, of Axson, Ga., and Brenda Frost and husband, James, of Douglas, Ga.; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Crosby was preceded in death by two sons, Alton (Buddy) Crosby and James William Crosby.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 17, 2004, at the Church of God of Prophecy in Pearson, Ga., with Rev. Robert Crosby and Rev. Hardy Crosby officiating. Special musical selections included "My Robe," rendered by Rita Spikes, "You Were There," rendered by Robin King, "Where Angels Fear To Tread," rendered by Allen and Jessie Jewel and Tina Harper, and "Amazing Grace," rendered by Renea Quick and the congregation. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Rita Spikes, pianist. Interment followed in the Jowers Chapel Cemetery.

Willie Davis, Jr.
Willie Davis, Jr. was born on August 10, 1949 to the late Willie Davis, Sr. and Mattie Ruth Eady. He later met and married Linda Ann Alls on March 16, 1970. To this union six children were born. One child preceded him in death, Tracy Gregory Davis.
Willie joined Young’s Chapel Missionary Baptist church at an early age and was the chief musician with over 40 years of dedicated service. He formed the Willie Davis Male Chorus. He also served as musician for 25 years at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist church of Pearson.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His loving wife Linda Ann Davis of Douglas; his mother Mattie Ruth Eady of Douglas; his five children Stacy T. Davis, Darrell Davis, Randy S. Davis, Arlisha Nicole Davis and Kayla Michelle Davis, all of Douglas; his sister Alice McFatten of Douglas; his two brothers Jimmy Eady of Douglas and Amos Davis of Atlanta; his aunts Annie Lee Reed of Miami, Mary Watts of Douglas, Lucinda Henderson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Rebecca Eady of Douglas; seven sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; nine grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at the Young's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Douglas, where Rev. Booker T. Rose is pastor, with Rev. Edward Glover officiating.
The congregation enjoyed special musical selections by the Willie Davis Male Chorus and Heavenly Kings (combined choir), and soloist Rev. Edward Glover. Burial followed in the Vickers Cemetery in Coffee County.
Honorary pallbearers included the deacons from Young’s Chapel, deacons from Oak Grove, Young’s Chapel Senior Choir and Young's Chapel Junior Choir.
Active pallbearers included Tony Eady, Eric Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, Will McRae, Joe Reed and Mike Shaw.

Axson
Helen Giddens Hindman
Helen Giddens Hindman, age 86, of Axson, passed away Tuesday, April 25, at the Doctors Hospital in Augusta following an extended illness.
A native of Atkinson County, Hindman was born on Feb. 6, 1920, the daughter of Jim and Darrell Giddens of Kirkland. She was confirmed in the Kirkland Methodist Church when she was nine years old. She received her elementary education at the Kirkland school and graduated from Pearson High School.
Hindman was a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Elementary Education. She later studied at Mercer University and the University of Georgia. Hindman served as a teacher in Atkinson, Coffee and Effingham counties. She retired from teaching after 24 years of service due to poor health. She was a member of the Kirkland United Methodist Church, where she was the church organist and pianist and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband William Edmond Hindman.
Survivors include: Her son James G. Hindman of Axson; her daughter Bonnie Corbitt and husband Bobby of Kirkland; her grandson Andrew Williams and four great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at the Kirkland Methodist Church with Rev. Curtis Corbitt and Rev. Edward Mathews officiating.
Special musical selections included "In His Arms" and "Stairway To Heaven," rendered by the Sweetwater Creek Singers, and "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder," rendered by the congregation with the Sweetwater Creek Singers accompanying. Soft music for the prelude and postlude was rendered by the Sweetwater Creek Singers.
The interment followed in Antioch Cemetery.
Active pallbearers included Julian Haskins, Melvin McKinnon, Tommy Johnston, Ray Peterson, Hampton Giddens and William White.
Honorary pallbearers included the visiting nurses of Atkinson and Coffee Counties.

Nora Lee Thompson Mathews
Nora Lee Thompson Mathews, age 84, of Hawkinsville, passed away on Sunday, April 23, in Hawkinsville after an extended illness.
Mathews, a native of Blakley County, was born May 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Robert Russell and Annie Smith Thompson.
She was a homemaker, the widow of the late Jeffie Mathews and the late C. W. Knight and a member of Harvestime Church.
Survivors include: Her daughters Kathy Wooten of Douglas, Sarah Whitney of Hawkinsville, Peggy Sue Branham of Lake Milton, Ohio; her sons Elbert Knight of Hortense, Oswald Knight of Chase City, Va., Charles Knight of Ambrose, Ralph Knight of Hawkinsville, Doyle Knight of Cochran and Bobby Knight of Douglas; 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at the Sims Funeral
Home Chapel, with Rev. Sam DeCasper and Rev. Kenneth Mathews officiating.
Soloist Michael Thomas sang "Go Rest High On That Mountain," "Amazing Grace” and “Sweet Beulah Land,” with Lois Mills providing soft music for the prelude and postlude.
Burial followed in the Reedy Branch Church Cemetery near Broxton.
