Corbitt Collins

Mr. Corbitt Collins, 89, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Monday afternoon, March 22, 2004, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.

Mr. Collins, a native of Florence, S.C., was the son of the late Walter Collins and the late Mary Altman Collins. He was a retired barber, after 70 years of service, and a member of Mt. Union Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Myrtice Russ Collins of Douglas, Ga.; one daughter, Jean Adams of Hinesville, Ga.; two sons, Billy Collins of Broxton, Ga., and Russell Collins of Douglas, Ga.; one sister, Annie Floyd of Baxley, Ga.; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Mt. Union Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Elisha Purvis, Jr., and Rev. Larry Stone officiating. A special eulogy was presented by Denise Caines. Special musical selections included "Wish You Were Here," presented by soloist Marty Adams, with taped music, and "Welcome to Heaven," presented by soloist Joselyn Adams, with taped music. Interment followed in the Elam Harper Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dexter Collins, Marty Adams, Mickey Tucker, Shannon Tucker, Michael T. Smith, Alvin Caines, Clayton Russ, Kameron Cole, and Boyd Kirkland.

Honorary pallbearers were Dan Fussell, Donnie Smith, Wilbert Carver, Wesley Vickers, Hugh Fussell, Harold Roberts, Sheriff Rob Smith, Harvey Adams, Kenny Russ, and Michael Carver.

Ricketson Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Floyd Lamar Clough

Mr. Floyd Lamar Clough, 92, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Monday night, March 15, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Clough, a native of Jeff Davis County, Ga., was the son of the late Forrest Clough and the late Annie Belle Gaskin Clough. He was the widower of the late Roxie Mae Herring Clough, a member of First Baptist Church in Douglas, Ga., and a retired cattleman, rancher, dairyman, pipe fitter, and real estate developer.

Survivors include: one daughter, Iris Mellonie Clough of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Dr. John Lamar Clough of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters, Annie C. Meeks of Augusta, Ga., and Sara Isabelle Clough of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Candace Lynn Newell and husband, Van, and Stanley Lamar Clough and wife, Fara, all of Douglas, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Fara Elizabeth Clough, Katie Rebekah Clough, and Nathan Lamar Clough, all of Douglas, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 18, 2004, at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Shep Johnson and Rev. Richard McLeroy officiating. Dr. Arlis Burch presented a special eulogy. Special musical selections, "Oh That Will Be Glory," "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," and "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," were presented by Bobby Stevenson, music director, and the congregation, and "When the Morning Comes" was presented by soloist Sybil Meeks Benson, with Phyllis Clough Davis accompanying at the piano. Mrs. Davis also provided piano music for the prelude and postlude. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dr. Wayne Clough, Ronnie Clough, Alan Clough, Carl Clough, Skip Clough, and Lynwood Meeks.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Senior Men's Sunday School class of First Baptist Church.

Jollie H. Lewis

Mrs. Jollie H. Lewis passed away Saturday night, March 20, 2004, at the Fairmont Crossing Nursing Home in Amherst, Va., following an extended illness.

Mrs. Lewis, a native of Coffee County, Douglas, Ga., was the daughter of the late Henry Harold and Macie Ann Harrold. She moved to Lynchburg, Va., at a very early age and was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church, Silver Star, and Sewing Clubs. She was the widow of the late William "Bill" Lewis.

Survivors include: one son, Henry Harrold and wife, Willie Mae, of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Harrell's Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. James Anthony officiating. Special music was provided by soloist Gladys Williams. Interment followed in the Broxton City Cemetery in Broxton, Ga.

Active pallbearers were family members.

Community Funeral Home of Lynchburg, Va., and Harrell's Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., were in charge of the arrangements.

Hansel C. Spivey

Mr. Hansel C. Spivey, 69, of Pearson, Ga., passed away early Tuesday morning, March 23, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Spivey, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was the son of Tillman Spivey and the late Linnie Mae Davis Spivey. He was a retired metal fabricator, a U.S. Army veteran of Germany, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam era, and a member of Ozias Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Lavada Sellers Spivey of Pearson, Ga.; one son, H.C. Spivey, Jr., and wife, Susan, of Tifton, Ga.; five daughters, Ruth Burch of Axson, Ga., Barbara Posey and husband, Tommy, of Coolidge, Ga., Bertha Pierce and husband, Kevin, of Doerun, Ga., Carol Tillery of Norman Park, Ga., and Melissa McKinnon and husband, Rusty, of Douglas, Ga.; his father, Tillman Spivey of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters, Rosa Lee Hester and Hazel Whitley, both of Douglas, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by six brothers, J.D. Spivey, Homer Lee Spivey, Nelson Spivey, Isaac Spivey, Tillman Spivey, Jr., and Ronald Spivey; two sisters, Lou Nell Spivey and Emma Lou Morgan; and one grandson, Cory Pierce.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Ozias Freewill Baptist Church in Pearson, Ga., with Rev. Larry Johnson, Rev. Donnie Sloan, and Rev. Leroy Spivey officiating. Special musical selections included "That Is Where I Want to Go," presented by soloist Rev. J.L. Sellers, "Look What I Traded for a Mansion," presented by the Freewill Ambassadors, with Mitchell Deems accompanying at the keyboard, and "I Want to Stroll Over Heaven," presented by the Freewill Ambassadors, with Lilla Deems accompanying at the keyboard.

Graveside services followed at 4 p.m. at Kimball Methodist Church Cemetery in the Anderson City Community in Worth County, with Rev. Larry Johnson officiating. At the graveside, "Beautiful Country Somewhere" was offered a cappella by Rev. J.L. Sellers and Rev. Tommy Deems.

Active pallbearers were Silas Spivey, Johnny Spivey, Newton Sellers, Kenny Register, Dewayne Sellers, Steve Whitley, and Levoy Whitley.

Honorary pallbearers were Rev. Edgar Musgrove, Billy Walker, Hinky Matthews, Lewis Spivey, Buddy Corbitt, Russell McKinnon, and Dr. Gordon Boone.

Doris Griffin

Mrs. Doris Griffin, 76, of Ocilla, Ga., passed away Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Irwin County Hospital.

Mrs. Griffin, a native of Irwin County, Ga., was born September 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Alford and Alice McMillan Griffin. She was a retired nurse's aide from Irwin County Hospital, a former employee of H&M Grocery in Ocilla, a former waitress at Willet's Truck Stop and Restaurant, and a member of Spring Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Virgil O. Griffin of Ocilla, Ga.; two sons, Roy Griffin of Ocilla, Ga., and Jerry Griffin of Dublin, Ga.; one daughter, Blondean G. Whitley of Ocilla, Ga.; one sister, Betty Highsmith of Douglas, Ga.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by five brothers, four sisters, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Spring Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Irwin County, Ga., with Elder Maurice Riner, Elder Paul Thomas, and Elder Elliott Tucker officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Effie Lee Hutcheson Chaney

Mrs. Effie Lee Hutcheson Chaney, 93, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Friday, March 26, 2004, at home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Chaney, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born October 19, 1910,t he daughter of the late Wiley Aaron and Hattie Mae Royals Hutcheson. She was a homemaker and the widow of the late Melvin Lee Chaney.

Survivors include: one daughter, Dixie Dorman and husband, Bob, of Manchester, Ga.; two sons, Robert Chaney and wife, Teresa, of Douglas, Ga., and Bill Elgin and wife, Josey, of Illinois; one brother, Culas Hutcheson and wife, Joann; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chaney was preceded in death by three sisters, Valerie Hulsey, Arlie Register, and Amy Lee.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 29, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Shep Johnson officiating. Soloist Erin Dorman sang "The old Rugged Cross," and soloist Dr. Diskin Morgan sang "Amazing Grace," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Burial followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Michael Chaney, Greg Tanner, Matt Dorman, Lee Dorman, Lyle Dorman, and Michael Pelka.

Jimmie Hoyt Davis

Mr. Jimmie Hoyt Davis, 70, of Nicholls, Ga., passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Coffee Regional Medical Center, Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.

Mr. Davis, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born June 10, 1933, the son of the late Milton James and Aline Carter Davis. He was a retired truck driver and member of Wilsonville Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include: one son, Jimmy Darryl Davis and wife, Nell, of Nicholls, Ga.; two grandchildren, Brian Davis and wife, Danita, and Sandy Graham and husband, Damon, all of Nicholls, Ga.; two brothers, Doyle Davis of Nicholls, Ga., and Billy Davis of Douglas, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Haley Davis, Katie Davis and Hunter Graham.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 29, 2004, at 2 p.m., at Wilsonville Church of God of Prophecy near Nicholls, Ga., with Rev. Charles Brown and Rev. Chester Williams officiating. Faye Adams, Carolyn Wright, and Chris Purvis sang "Amazing Grace" and "Beulah Land," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Also, a taped selection of "Go Rest High On That Mountain" was provided. Burial followed at the Roxie Mae Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Paul Hersey, David Hersey, David Davis, Tony Davis, Randy Gillis, Keith Southerland, Ryan Davis, Joey Copeland, and Johnny Amerson.

Phyllis Jackson

Ms. Phyllis Jackson, 57, of Irwin County, Ga., passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at her residence.

Ms. Jackson, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born August 18, 1946, the daughter of the late Emory Jackson and Lucille Harper Griffin. She was a former employee of South Georgia Medical Center, Irwin Manufacturing, and Leveretts Apparel, and attended New Hope Baptist Church in Ambrose, Ga.

Survivors include: two sons, Dale Merritt, Jr., and wife, Fran, of Douglas, Ga., and Johnny Merritt of Ocilla, Ga.; one daughter, Ka M. Burch and husband, Joe, of Wray, Ga.; one sister, Theresa White and husband, Randy, of Blackshear, Ga.; one brother, Benji Jackson of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren, Candis Polk, Jered Merritt, Emory Burch, and Katie Burch; three great-grandchildren, Sara, Abbiegale, and Brooklynn Polk; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Jackson was preceded in death by her step-father, J.C. Griffin.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla, Ga., with Rev. Robert Merritt officiating. Interment followed in Brushy Creek Cemetery.

Ovealene Mayne

Mrs. Ovealene Mayne, 76, of Valdosta, Ga., passed away Saturday afternoon, March 27, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga., following a brief illness.

Mrs. Mayne, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was the daughter of the late Jesse B. and Fannie Melvin McKinnon. She was the widow of the late Billy L. Mayne and had lived in Valdosta most of her life. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Valdosta where she taught school at Faith Christian Academy for 30 years.

Survivors include: six children, Jessica Austin of Nashville, Tenn., Tony Mayne and wife, Pamelia, of Tallahassee, Fla., Dale Mayne of Merridian, Conn., Chuck Mayne and wife, Sonya, of Mayday, Ga., and Chris Mayne and Jennifer Belcher, both of Valdosta, Ga.; two brothers, Aubrey McKinnon and wife, Helen, and Carlos "Red" McKinnon and wife, Nell, all of Coffee County, Ga.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mayne was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Marsha Corrie Mayne and McKinna Jayden Mayne, and one brother, Oswald McKinnon.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Faith Baptist Church in Valdosta, Ga. Interment followed at the Royal Cemetery in Atkinson County, Ga.

Ione Southerland Carter

Mrs. Ione Southerland Carter, 85, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga., following an extended illness.

Mrs. Carter, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born December 25, 1918, the daughter of the late Ed and Bettie Carter Southerland. She was the widow of the late Olaf Foy "Bay" Carter, a homemaker, and a member of Roxie Mae United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Mike Carter and wife, Linda, of Nicholls Ga.; one brother, Edwin Southerland of Nicholls Ga.; and two grandchildren, Michael Carter and Matthew Carter, both of Nicholls Ga.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 2 p.m., at Roxie Mae United Methodist Church, with Rev. Chester Williams and Mr. Gillis Carter officiating. Bonita Southerland gave the Eulogy. Carolyn Wright, Faye Adams, and Chris Purvis sang "Going Home," "I'll Be Waiting at the River For You," and "Ten Thousand Years," with Lois Mills accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in the Roxie Mae Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Hess McGray, Stacy Taylor, David Taylor, Gordon Lee, Randy Stallings, and Jeremy Hutchison.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Lee, Mack Davis, John Green, John Hersey, William Smith, Julian Dorminey, Johnny Lee, Bennie Moore, Johnny Johnson, and Jasper Tanner.

Savannah Hall Canty

Mrs. Savannah Hall Canty, 72, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2004, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Canty, a native of Dodge County, Ga., was born October 20, 1931, the daughter of the late Azalean Oliver Hall and Willie Hall. She was the widow of the late King Alfonso Canty and a member of Rockhill C.M.E. Church of Jacksonville.

Survivors include: one daughter, Linda Sue Canty and husband, John Anthony Carson; two sisters, Geraldine Hall Lee and husband, Lester, and Mattie Jay Royster and husband, Chester; one granddaughter, Asalean L. King and husband, Roger; one great-grandson, Maurice R. Armour; two god-daughters, Pauline Davis and Debra Williams; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Mrs. Canty was preceded in death by one brother, Willie Hall, and two children, Kenneth McDonald, Jr., and Azalean Johnson.

Funeral services were held at noon, Monday, March 22, 2004, at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Broxton, Ga., with Pastor Sid Whitfield officiating. Special musical selections were provided by soloists Kentaivon Durham, Trease Harrison, and Trease Harrison. Interment followed in the Broxton City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were John Williams, Kim Armour, Percy J. Armour III, James Debro, and Eric Armour.

Janie Mae Youngblood Butts

Mrs. Janie Mae Youngblood Butts, 94, of Nicholls Ga., passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Bacon County Hospital in Alma, Ga.

Mrs. Butts, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born July 15, 1909, the daughter of the late Sim and Linnie Spivey Youngblood. She was a homemaker, the widow of the late George Washington Butts, and a member of Chatterton Holiness Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dorothy Whiddon and husband, Bill, of Gaston, S.C., and Mildred Hersey of Alma, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Butts of Douglas, Ga.; two step-sisters, Ora Harper of Douglas, Ga., and Dora Deen of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Butts was preceded in death by one son, Edward Butts.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 2 p.m., at Chatterton Holiness Baptist Church, with Rev. Gene Chaney and Rev. Robert Tanner officiating. Brandy Owens gave the Eulogy. Faye Adams, Carolyn Wright, and Chris Adams sang "Serenaded By Angels" and "Amazing Grace." Soloist Brandy Owens sang "Precious Lord" and "Wish You Were Here," with Bonnie Musgrove accompanying at the piano. Burial followed in the Chatterton Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Melvin Douglas, Eddie Butts, J. C. Morris, Rodney Whiddon, Dody Hersey, and Cady Hersey.

Isaac John Roberson, Sr.

Mr. Isaac John Roberson, Sr., 71, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at home following an extended illness.

Mr. Roberson, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born August 19, 1932, the son of the late Thomas Latimore, Sr., and Ettie Mae Frost Roberson. In his 30 years as an educator, he worked as a coach, principal of Rincon Elementary School, assistant superintendent of Pulaski County Schools, and middle school teacher in Coffee County. He was a member of the Douglas Kiwanis Club, Georgia Retired Teachers Association, and a member of College Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. He was also a veteran of the Georgia Army National Guard and the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include: his wife, Joy Patton Roberson of Douglas, Ga.; two sons, Isaac John Roberson, Jr., and wife, Mary, and David Patton Roberson and wife, Diane, both of Douglas, Ga.; four sisters, Blanche Wright McClendon, Duncan Wright Hutto, and Quinnelle Roberson Richey, all of Douglas, Ga., and Wilma Roberson Janaski of Orlando, Fla.; and five granddaughters, April, Melissa, Kelsie, Katy, and Alice Roberson, all of Douglas, Ga. Mr. Roberson was preceded in death by five brothers, Melvin, Willard, Vernon, Thomas L., Jr., and Curtis Roberson; and two sisters, Hannah Wright Clements and Juanita Roberson Vickers.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 12, 2004, at College Avenue Baptist Church, with Dr. Steve Hart, Dr. Randy Deloach, and Rev. Otis Beal officiating. Janice Griffin led the congregation in singing "Victory in Jesus" and "When We All Get To Heaven," with Diane Griffin accompanying at the piano and Dee Graham accompanying at the organ. "Amazing Grace" was played at the end of the service. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Thomas L. Roberson III, Steve Vickers, David Czajkowski, Scott Czajkowski, Danny Framell, Alvin Ricketson, and John Owen.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Kiwanis Club and the Albert Hulsey Sunday School class of College Avenue Baptist Church.

Gladys Harrington

Ms. Gladys Harrington, 78, of Hazlehurst, Ga., passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the Jeff Davis County Hospital in Hazlehurst, Ga., following an extended illness.

Ms. Harrington, a native of Ben Hill County, Ga., was born December 3, 1925, the daughter of the late Cleveland Pringle and Ida Bell Meeks Harrington. She was a member of Trinity Non-Denominational Church.

Survivors include: two sons, W. L. Daniel and wife, Linda, of Clewiston, Fla., and Larry Daniel of Canal Point, Fla.; grandchildren, Danny, Rodney, Brad, Jason, and Teresa; 10 great-grandchildren; one niece, Olene Harper, and one nephew, J. W. Hicks. Mrs. Harrington was preceded in death by one daughter, Darnell Whitley.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Floyd Musgrove officiating. The Trinity Church Choir sang "I'll Meet You In The Morning" and "Amazing Grace," with Cindy Musgrove accompanying at the piano. Burial followed at the Salem Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were J. H. Truelove, Allen McKinnon, Teddy Lott, Steve Beecher, Marvin Key, and Allen Arwood.
