Rufus Mack Sr.
Rufus Mack Sr. died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at Cedars Medical Center in Miami.
His funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Carey Royal Ram’n Chapel in Miami.
Mr. Mack, a native of Jeffer-son County, was raised in Burke County. In his childhood he was baptized at Roberson Grove Baptist Church in Waynesboro. In his early adult years he moved his family to Miami where he was a retired mechanic.
Survivors include three dau-ghters, Dorethia Bostic, Amanda Mack and Mamie Mack; three sons, Luther Williams, Rufus Mack Jr. and Murdock Mack; six sisters, Georgia Patterson, Thelma Emery, Daisy Lewis of Waynesboro, Marilyn Roberson, Debra Roberson and Venneta Roberson, all of Miami; four brothers, Joe Mack II and Willie Roberson, both of Miami, and Charlie Mack and John Mack, both of Waynesboro; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Rev. Woodrow Givens
Rev. Woodrow Givens, 88, of Girard died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at his residence.
His funeral will be noon Saturday, Nov. 30, at Givens Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Willie Givens and Isiah Kirkland officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Rev. Givens, a native of Burke County, was the pastor of Cochran Grove, Second Springfield, Mills Grove, Mt. Hope, Galilee and Commer Grove Baptist churches for a combined total of 60 years. He was a member of Givens Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Woodrow Givens Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla. and the Rev. Willie Givens of Augusta; five daughters, Annie McCoy, Eula B. Car-ter, Vianna Lane and Josephine Freeman, all of Girard, and Louise Sams of Augusta; a sister, Clara Lovett of Augusta; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Scotty Sims, Jerrie Givens, Willie R. Givens, Rufus T. McCoy, Charles Prescott and Derrick Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
Mary Ann Tussey
Mary Ann Callen Tussey, 63, of Hephzibah died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Her funeral was 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, at DeLoach Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Terry McLaughlin and Dr. Don Manning officiating. Burial was in Hephzibah Vance Cemetery. Mrs. Tussey, a native of Morning View, Ky., was a resident of Richmond County for 31 years. She attended Story Mill Road Baptist Church. Survivors include her widower, James A. Tussey of Hephzibah; three sons, George T. Tussey and Frank Tussey, both of Hephzibah and Jack J. Tussey of Danville, Ky.; three daughters, Betty T. Bromley of Union, Ky., Debra Callen of Columbus and Shelia T. Weaver of Hephzibah; two brothers, Harry Callen of Clearwater, Fla. and Bobby Callen of Morning View; a sister, Gayneal Rust of Morning View; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Henry Hammond Blanchard Sr.
Henry Hammond Blanchard Sr.,, 85, of Waynesboro died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at his residence. Graveside services were 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Burke Memorial Gardens in Waynes-boro, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating.
Mr. Blanchard, a lifelong resident of Burke County, was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a farmer. In 1946 he started Blanchard Equipment Co., where he retired. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club and the Waynesboro Country Club and was on the board of directors for First National Bank of Waynesboro. Survivors include two sons, Henry “Hank” Blanchard Jr. and Phillip Blanchard, both of Waynesboro; a daughter, Jane B. Stewart of Waynesboro; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bill Jones Tomlin
Bill Jones “Big Daddy” Tomlin, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at Burke Medical Center in Waynesboro. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, at the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, with Dr. Al Wright officiating.
Mr. Tomlin was a lifelong resident of Burke County and a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School General Secretary for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War 11. He was retired from McKinney Wholesale Building Supply in Waynesboro where he worked as a sales clerk.
Survivors include his widow, Janell Mobley Tomlin of Waynesboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Sherry Tomlin of Otto, N.C. and Stephen and Jane Tomlin of Dillard and Chris and Gina Tomlin of Richmond Hill; a daughter and son-in-law, Jone and Dan Wiggins of Waynes-boro; and five grandchildren, Daniel Wiggins, Carson Wig-gins, Elizabeth Wiggins, Casey Tomlin and Tory Tomlin.

Charles A. Vandegrift
Charles A. “Chuck” Vande-grift, 44, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A memorial service will held at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29, at DeLoach Funeral Home in Hephzibah, with the Rev. Dan Bowen officiating.
Mr. Vandegrift was a professional painter for over 20 years.
Survivors include his mother, Herma Vandegrift of Hephzibah; his father, Frank Vandegrift of Hephzibah; three sisters, Kathi L. Jenkins of Hephzibah, Teresa Cohn of Blythe and Hanna Hudzick of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Henry Ronald Vande-grift of Hephzibah; and his fiancée, Francis Henderson of Dearing.
Leroy Douglas Sr.
Leroy Douglas Sr., 97, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at Riverview Nursing Home of Savannah after a long illness. His funeral will be 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 4), at the Chapel of Sidney A. Jones Funeral Home in Savannah. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Douglas was a native of Waynesboro, but lived in Savannah most of his life. Survivors include a son, Leroy Douglas Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Willie Mae Douglas, a brother G.M. Douglas; a sister-in-law, Zadalle Douglas; and eight grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
Harrison T. Clifton III
Harrison T. Clifton III, 48, of Millen died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002.
His funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Elam Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Brown and Maurice Crowder officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Clifton, a lifelong resident of Jenkins County, was assistant manager of Millen Auto Parts. He was a member of Elam Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, H. Towles Clifton IV of Garfield; a sister, Teresa C. Wommack of Millen, his parents, H.T. and Floretta Adams Clifton of Millen; two nephews, Lee Lewis and Terrence Wommack; and his special friends Carol Cates, Mark Cates, Andy Cates and Jonathon Cates.
Active pallbearers were Lee Lewis, Terrance Wommack, Toby Wommack, Mark Cates, Jonathon Cates, Walter Bragg, Lewis Parker and Butch Lewis.
Jacquelyn Hammock
Jacquelyn R. Hammock, 73, of Waynesboro died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at Burke Medical Center in Waynesboro. Graveside services were 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Botsford Baptist Cemetery in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating.
Mrs. Hammock, a resident of Burke County since 1991, was a member of the Botsford Baptist Church. She was a group leader at the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Baxley where she retired in 1990. She was also a former musician at Botsford Baptist Church. Survivors include her widower, Horace D. Hammock of Waynesboro; a son, Michael D. Hammock Sr. of Waynesboro; a daughter, Deborah Ann Hammock of Waynesboro; a sister, Loretta Avis of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, the Rev. William T. Rathbun of Jesup; and five grandchildren, Michael D. Hammock Jr., Jacquelyn H. Sco-ggins, Rebecca A. Vann, Miram L. Vann and Travis Powell.

Dorothy Sturgill
Dorothy Sturgill, 68, of Hephzibah died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon.
Her funeral was 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at DeLoach Funeral Home Chapel in Hephzibah, with the Rev. Mike Andrews officiating. Burial was in Hephzibah Vance Cemetery. Mrs. Sturgill had lived in the Hephzibah area for 43 years and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Lynn Adams; six sons, Charles J. Sturgill Jr. of Columbus, Ronald Eugene Sturgill of Martinez, Cairo L. Sturgill of Blackshear, James A. Sturgill of Dearing and Dale E. Sturgill and Terry A. Sturgill, both of Hephzibah; seven sisters, Alverna Darrier of Bowling Green, Fla., Lois Hurley and Charlotte Farr, both of Evans, Loretta Huff of East Stone Gap, Va., Eva Jean Ball of St. Paul, Va., Alice Lane of Appling and Evelyn Quall of East Gap, Va.; a brother, Harold Willis of Duffield, Va.; and 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were sons and grandsons.
Lynwood Bynes
Lynwood Bynes of Midville died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002.
His funeral was 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Pine Hill Baptist Church with Drs. Clarence Brown and W.J. Crockett and the Revs. Eddie Fryer and Jerome Prophet officiating. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mr. Bynes, a native of Broward County, Fla., was a retired machine operator. He was a member of Gray’s Grove Baptist Church, where he was an ordained deacon and served in many capacities. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Patricia Bynes of Savannah and Bobby and Barbara Bynes of Hephzibah; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Charlie and Joel Jones of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bernice and Paul Allen of Augusta, Mary and Melvin Brown of Midville and Dorothy and Nebraska Roberson of Keysville; four brothers, Willie Bynes of Ft. Lauderdale, Johnny Bynes of Waynesboro, Joseph Bynes of Manhattan, N.Y. and Sidney Bynes of Irvin, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Henderson and Lucy Youth, both of Millen; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and four godchildren, Marleau Phinazee, Monique Cheeks, Candace Smiley and Charlie Sams. Pallbearers were Edward Bynes, Bobby Bynes, Dwayne Bynes, Edward Bynes II, LaVonta Bynes, Dexter Rountree, Bobby Bynes II and Nebraska Roberson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Gray’s Grove Baptist Church Deacon Board.
