Mrs. Houston was born March 16, 1945 in Carroll County, Ga., daughter of the late George Allen Legg and Mable Bernice Sanders Legg. She was an operator for Southrn Mills.
A funeral was held at McKoon Funeral Home the afternoon of May 8 with the Rev. Ken Norton officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan. Pallbearers were Jeff Shelton, Bobby Claybrook, Doug Cook, Wayne Kee, Joe Legg and Wesley Shelton.

Mrs. Rachel Leah Payne, 64, of Sunny South Street, Newnan, died May 9, 1998 at Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.
Mrs. Payne was born Nov. 7, 1933 in Cadwell, Ga. to the Rev. and Mrs. Bennett Pickern. A retired registered nurse, she was named the Older Worker of the Year for the Coosa Valley area in 1990. She served as director of nursing at the former Coweta General Hospital in Newnan. Mrs. Payne was valedictorian of her class, and was the youngest girl to enter nursing at 16 years of age at Crawford Long School of Nursing. She was a charter member of First Baptist Church in Rome, Ga.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Martin and Hightower Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home in Newnan. Pastor Steve Coyle will officiate, assisted by Pastor Quinn Evans. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan. Pallbearers will be Matt Hawkins, Brian Payne, Irvin Tillery, Jerry Banas, Dofford Butler and Mark Strawn.

Mrs. Bessie Mann Sewell
Mrs. Bessie Mann Sewell, 77, of Winfield Drive, Newnan, died May 10, 1998 at Newnan Hospital.
Mrs. Sewell was born Dec. 23, 1920 in Newnan to the late Robert Strickland Mann and Grace Davis Mann. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Sewell. She was the retired owner of the former Otasco store, a family-owned store operated for many years in downtown Newnan. She graduated from the Newnan public schools and Shorter College. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan where she was active in the WMU and the children's Sunday School. She was one of the original members of the Ladies Golf Association of Newnan Country Club, having served as president of the association. She was an avid bridge player for many years.
A graveside service was held Monday afternoon in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Roscoe Road, Newnan with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating, assisted by Dr. J. B. Collingsworth.
Surviving are her daughter, Grace Davis Sewell of Newnan; and son, Emmett Sewell Jr. of Newnan.

Mr. Slaton was born July 19, 1924 in Fayette County, Ga. to Edward Eugene Stephens and Lois Odella Stephens. He was a retired loader for Pike trucking compnay and a member of the Church of God.

Born Sept. 12, 1916 in Carroll County, Mrs. Helton was re daughter of the late Joe and Martha Shelnutt Evans and the wife of the late Thomas L. Helton. She lived in Grantville most of her life and was retired from West Point Pepperell.
Mrs. Helton was a member of Grantville First United Methodist Church.

Born Jan. 8, 1923 in Cherokee County, Ala., Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of the late Samuel Guy Bullen and Mae Burk Bullen and the wife of the late Hal Gordon. She was involved in the family's business, Gordon's Grocery, and served as interim post master of the Gabbettville Post Office.
A member of Long Cane Baptist Church, Mrs. Gordon compiled a history for the church's 150th anniversary and served as administrator of the Long Cane Cemetery Fund.

Mr. Howard P. Arata Jr.
Mr. Howard P. "Howdy" Arata Jr., 56, of Newnan died May 23, 1998.
Mr. Arata spent much of his energy working with less fortunate people, especially the mentally handicapped.
Mr. Arata was a caseworker with the Fulton County Department of Family and Children's Services in the 1960s, where he became involved with the mentally handicapped. He earned a master's degree in special education and was special education teacher for more than 13 years. He is also remembered as a special friend of Tommie Smith for more than 30 years and worked as a citizens advocate, helping Smith live an independent life.
Mr. Arata and his wife lived for the past three years in Newnan, when he worked with Flatrock Middle School in Fayette County as a media specialist paraprofessional.
Survivors include his wife, June Arata; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Sandra Young and their son, Cy of Newnan; son, Antonio Arata and his sons, Jake and John, of Athens; son, Ryan Arata of Athens; sfather, H.P. Arata Sr. of Savannah; sisters, Mickey Johnson, Melissa Wells, Beth Faris, all of Savannah; and brother, Tony Arata of Nashville, Tenn.
The family is honoring Mr. Arata's wish that there be no memorial service and no gifts. Mr. Arata asked that those wishing to make remembrances to give an hour of their time helping someone less fortunate.

Funeral services for Mrs. Patricia Ann Hill Barton, 46, were conducted Sunday, May 23, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home Chapel, in Franklin Georgia.
Mrs. Barton, a mother of three, was the wife of the late Donnie Barton, and was the daughter of the late Neely and Helen Bowman Hill. Mrs. Bowman was employed by Belk of Newnan, where she was a shipping and receiving clerk. She was a resident of Franklin for the past 14 years, where she was an active member of the Heard County High School Band Booster Club and attended Centralhatchee Baptist Church.
The Sunday service was officiated by the Reverend Doug Bingham. Leesa Stutts Cothran provided organ music. Pallbearers included Joe Hill, James Hill, Robbie Hill, Brian Hill, Scottie Poe, and Brandon Bloodworth. Interment followed at the Holly Hill Cemetary in Fairburn.

Born Aug. 26, 1928, in Coweta County, Mrs. Beckom was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Malcolm Attaway. She was the wife of the late Hewlette H. Beckom.
Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 25, in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Dr. Jimmy Brown officiated and interment followed in Southview Cemetery in Moreland.

Mrs. Rosella Billingsley
Mrs. Rosella Billingsley, 91, of LaGrange died May 26, 1998 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
Born May 25, 1906, in Anniston, Alabama, Mrs. Billingsley was the daughter of the late William and Rosella McDowell Minter. She was the wife of the late George D. Billingsley. A resident of LaGrange for the past four years, she lived in Smyrna for 40 years. She was retired from Dobbins Air Force Base and was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, May 26, at Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. The Reverend Homer Morris and the Reverend Jimmy Minter will officiate, and interment will be at 2 p.m. at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.
Survivors include sisters, Wilma Billingsley of LaGrange, Mattie Ingram of Anniston, Alabama; grandchildren, Dyan Webb of Greenwood, South Carolina, Carolyn DeVore of Marietta, Richard West of Marietta, Bill West of Marietta; and three great-grandchildren.
