Miss Sally Bowen

Miss Sarah Louise (Sally) Bowen, 72, longtime resident of Newnan whose career as a teacher spanned three generations, died Feb. 18, 1999 after a long battle with cancer.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Newnan Presbyterian Church.

She was born in LaGrange, Ga. April 23, 1926 to Alva M. Bowen and Julia Culpepper Bowen while her father was teaching at LaGrange High School. In 1930 the family moved to Newnan.

Graduating from Newnan High School in 1943 at the top of her class, she earned her AB degree, Cum Laude, from Wesleyan College in Macon and the MAT from Duke University. After summer study at Emory University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Georgia, she graduated from West Georgia College in Carrollton with the degree of Specialist in Education.

She taught Latin and social studies for 45 years before retiring in 1992. She taught at Atkinson Grammar School, Newnan High and The Heritage School in Newnan, at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton and at the J.C. Booth Middle School in Peachtree City.

In addition to many honors associated with teaching, Miss Bowen was extremely active in her community. Among her many civic contributions were service on the Bicentennial and Sesquicentennial Committees for the City of Newnan, the Newnan-Carnegie Library Board which built the present Newnan-Coweta Public Library, the Coweta Chapter of the American Red Cross, Newnan Parks Commission, and the Executive Committee for the Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City Retirement Community.

In 1996 the Newnan Rotary Club made her the first woman recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award "for being a Newnan Treasure." Newnan Crossing Elementary School named a patriotism award in her honor, and in 1997 the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce named her "Citizen of the Year."

She held memberships in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Newnan Ladies Golf Association, was a member and officer of the Wesleyan Alumnae Club of Coweta County, and was a member and director of the Newnan Pilot Club. She was a lifelong member of the Newnan Presbyterian Church and in 1996 received the "Outstanding Senior Presbyterian" award of the Greater Atlanta Presbytery.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Navy Captain and Mrs. A.M. Bowen Jr. of Annapolis Maryland.

Ms. Princess Pearl Braswell

Ms. Princess Pearl Braswell, 80, of Highland Park Court in Newnan died Feb. 12, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.

Born April 15, 1918 in Atlanta, Mrs. Braswell was the daughter of the late Willie and Ida Bell Robinson. She attended David T. Howard High School in Atlanta and was a member of Triumph Holiness Church, where she served as a missionary mother for missionary teachers.

The funeral was Feb. 17 at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home, with the Edler Ruzzie Mitchell and Bishop J.R. Keith officiating, assisted by Pastor Joyce Terrell and Elder bennie Mitchell.

Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery, with Joseph Brown, Ronald Montgomery, Ronald Mitchell, William J. Keith, Kenyon Keith and Curtis Walker as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sisters, Willie Bell Hall of Atlanta, Mary R. Herring of Newnan; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Anne Train Calhoun

Mrs. Mary Anne Train Calhoun, 82, of Savannah, died Feb. 14, 1999 at Memorial Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in Savannah, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Cohn K Train and Litla Comer Train and the wife of the late Lawton Miller Calhoun. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawton Miller Calhoun, Jr.

She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a homemaker.

Mrs. Calhoun graduated from Emma Willard School and Smith College. She was a former president of the Community Childrens Theater and the Junior League of Savannah (1948-50), where she was also a member until her death.

She served on the board of Savannah Home for Girls, the Georgia Association to Help Retarded Children and Georgia Society of Colonial Dames.

Mrs. Calhoun was a member of the Trustees Garden Club and a volunteer teacher at Charles Ellis School and Jacob G. Smith School.

The funeral service was Feb. 16 at St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial was at Bonaventure Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne C. and Tom F. Farmer of Newnan, Lilla C. and M.E. Costello of Atlanta, Katherine C. and Frank S. Wood of Alexandria, Va.; brother, Dr. J. Kirk Train, Jr. of Savannah; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Opal Chapman

Mrs. Opal Chapman, 84, of Spence Avenue in Newnan died Feb. 17, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1914 in Carroll County, Mrs. Chapman was the daughter of the late J. Monroe Herrin and Effie Mae Williams Herrin. She was a homemaker and a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church.

A graveside service will be Saturday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, with the Rev. Bob Daugherty officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willard Dean. Pallbearers will be Edward Beall, Robert Richards, Ton McElwaney, Carl Jones, James Jones, Jimmie Shadix, Jett Smith and Richard Pike as pallbearers.

Survivors include her son, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis (Mary) Chapman of Newnan; son-in-law, B.C. Hannah of Eatonton; brother, Floyd Herrin of Carrollton; sister, Zera C. Beall of Griffin; brother-in-law, Flod W. "Bud" Jones of Sargent; granddaughters, Melody L. Hannah of Victorville, Ca., Shirley Duncan of Newnan, Melinda Chapman of Moab, Utah, Patricia Autry of Moreland; grandsons, Maj. R. Wayne Hannah of Jonesboro, Curtis H. Chapman of Denver, Colo.; five great-granddaughters; five great-grandsons; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Clayton Gates, 45, of Newnan died Feb. 12, 1999 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 2, 1953 in Coweta County, Mr. Gates was a 1971 graduate of Newnan High School and worked for the Coweta County Water and Sewerage Department. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Gates.

The funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at Summer Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny T. Coleman officiating, assisted by the Rev. M. Brittian and the Rev. Willie Orr. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery, with Jimmy Ballard, Culpepper Reese, Winifred (Chuck) Smith, Pete Smith, Marvin Domineck and MacDonald Redwine as pallbearers.

Mrs. Virgie Simmons Miles, 67, of Clearwater Road in Sharpsburg died Feb. 13, 1999 at Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville.

Born Nov. 15, 1931, Mrs. Miles was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnny (Katie) Crowder and the wife of the late Willie George Simmons and Clarence Mitchell Miles. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelia Denise Miles.

Mrs. Miles was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board.

The funeral was Feb. 17 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronald Groom officiating, assisted by Steve Dennis, Elder Alonzo Penson and the Rev. Angela Chester. Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery, with her sons and other family as pallbearers.

Mr. George C. Wingo, 82, of Hogansville died Feb. 18, 1999 at Hospice LaGrange.

Born April 27, 1916 in Troup County, Mr. Wingo was the son of the late George P. Wingo and Nettie Caswell Wingo. He was retired from Uniroyal Inc. and was a member of First Baptist Church of Hogansville and Hogansville Senior Center.

The funeral will be Sunday, Feb. 21, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Helms and Dr. Jimmy Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Union Baptist Church in the St. Marks community of Meriwether County.

The family will receive visitors Saturday at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.

Mr. Frank Guthrie Jr., 72, of Robin Hood Drive in Newnan died Feb. 19, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Feb. 13, 1927 in Sumpter County, Ala., Mr. Guthrie was the son of the late Frank G. Guthrie Sr. and Margie Hollingsworth Guthrie. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked as a sales representative with Pratt & Lambert.

Mr. Guthrie was a member of Courts of Praise Christian Center in Lagrange.

The funeral will be Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at Courts of Praise Christian Center, with Pastor Alex Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan, with Paul Barnes, William Clark, Ray hale, John Hamrick Jr., Troy Holloway, Don North, Mike Owens, Roger Ray and Eddie Wood as pallbearers.

Mr. George Jacobs Sr., 70, of A Street in Sargent died Feb. 20, 1999 at his home.

Born May 9, 1928 in Coweta County, Mr. Jacobs was the son of the late Earnest and Nellie Short Jacobs. He was a retired maintenance worker for The Bibb Co. and a member of Victory Tabernacle.

Mr. Frank Johnson, 82, of Sargent died Feb. 19, 1999 at Wellstar Douglas General Hospital.

Born Nov. 16, 1916 in Carroll County, Mr. Johnson was the son of the late David A. Johnson and Alice Worley Johnson. He worked for Playtex Apparel in Newnan and was active with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 20 years.

The funeral will be Monday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with Bob Bryant, Frank Guest, Greg Guest, Dennis Hammond David Y. Strength and Paul W. Strength was pallbearers.

Mr. Tommy Tittle, 56, of Christopher Road, Sharpsburg, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Mr. Tittle was born Dec. 29, 1942 in Alexandria County, Virginia. He was a power delivery specialist for Georgia Power Company and a member of Turin United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Margaret O'Brien Tittle and his step-daughter Carla Carroll.

A funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Turin Methodist Church with the Rev. Griff Jones officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

Mr. Joe Leamon "Boo" Warner, 46, of Atlanta died Feb. 17, 1999.

He was born May 14, 1952 to Mrs. Julia Mae Bridges Warner and the late Bryant Warner Sr. in Luthersville, Ga. in Meriwether County. He was a member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Educated in the Meriwether and Coweta County school systems, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morris Brown College in Atlanta. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

A funeral was Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. at Clark Chapel United Methodist Church in Lulthersville with the Rev. Joe C. Neal, pastor, officiating. Mr. Oliver Sueing sang a solo. Burial was in Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Dr. in Atlanta.

Ms. Elizabeth "Liz" Ragan Godwin, 35, of Newnan died Feb. 20, 1999.

Born Dec. 4, 1963 in Hall County, Ms. Godwin was a graduate of Airport High School in West Columbia, S.C. and attended the University of South Carolina and DeKalb College in Decatur. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in West Columbia.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home in Covington, with Dr. Carl Hart and the Rev. John Freeland officiating.

Burial will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington, with Gary Byars, Scott Akins, Ricky Akins, Robbie Akins, Bob Callahan and Reuben Atkinson as pallbearers.

Mr. Charlie Turner, 95, of Greenville died Feb. 22, 1999 at Altavista Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 5, 1903 in Meriwether County, Mr. Turner was the son of the late Lizzie Mae Hobson Turner and Brewer Turner. He was a farmer.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at Luthersville Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Dean officiating.

Survivors include his cousin, John Chapman of Dacula.

Mrs. Nina Ruth Monroe Marett

Mrs. Nina Ruth Monroe Marett, 85, of Atlanta died Jan. 22, 1999.

Mrs. Marett was born Oct. 3, 1913 in Lumberbridge, N.C.,

She began playing piano at age 5. By the time she was 12, she was playing professionally for silent movies at the Alamo movie theater in Newnan, where she lived for many years.

Mrs. Marett studied music at the Atlanta Conservatory. The highlights of her musical career included playing with a live band every Wednesday night for a time on WSB Radio, a 50-year involvement with Peachtree Presbyterian Church and many visits to retirement homes over the years to share her talent and love of music.

Her most recent musical accomplishment was a featured solo performance in 1997 at a Christmas concert with Nicholas Bowden conducting members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

She was a charter member of the River Valley Garden Club founded in 1953, and was recently active in the club's Horticulture Committee.

The funeral was Jan. 26 at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. A private interment followed.

Survivors include her children, William W. Marett, Jr. of Cumming, Robert Monroe Marett of Atlanta, Patricia M. Pennington of Marietta, James Monroe Marett of Dijon, France, Jon Monroe Marett of Atlanta; sisters, Georgia Rebecca Post of Farmerville, La., Connie Christiansen of Marietta; three cousins; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Ms. Natalie Ann Clough, 68, of Pine Road in Newnan died Feb. 22, 1999.

Born Feb. 25, 1930 in Massachusetts, Ms. Clough was the daughter of the late Alfred A. Clough. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a retired Eastern Airlines flight attendant.

A memmeorial service will be held later.

Survivors include her stepmother, Caroline Eaton Ford of New Hampshire.

Mr. O.K. Hamlin, 91, of LaGrange died Feb. 25, 1999 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Born Nov. 17, 1907 in Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Hamlin was the son of the late Ed and Nancy Hedrick Hamlin. He was retired from the Elm City Division of Callaway Mills Company and a member of Bethel Chapel Baptist Church in LaGrange.

The funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. R.C. Prescott officiating. Burial will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.
