Mr. James B. Benton
Mr. James B. Benton, 53, of Newnan died Monday, June 28, 1999 at Sun Alliance Hospice in Riverdale, Ga.
Mr. Benton was born March 3, 1946 in Coronado, California and was brought to Newnan when he was six weeks old by his mother, Eva Mae Benton. His father, Bussey Benton, was living in the historic home on Old Corinth Road that was later moved and restored by Dr. Arnold and is still standing. Mr. Benton moved with his mother and four brothers to their grandparents' home in San Diego, California in 1957, and he later returned to live with his father and graduated from Newnan High School.
A U.S. Marines veteran, he fought in Vietnam and on his last tour was involved in the Tet offensive. While rescuing two priests trapped on a bridge he was critically wounded and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
His brother Dennis Benton died in 1970 and his father died in 1976, after which Benton returned to Newnan where he loved his horses, dogs and many friends.
A funeral will be held at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3.
Surviving are his mother, Eva Mae Benton of Idaho; brothers, Richard Benton of San Diego, CA, Ronald Benton of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Roger of San Diego; an aunt, Wilma Benton; uncle, Ernest Benton, and numerous nieces and nephews in California and Georgia. His estranged wife Patricia Ann Benton resides in San Diego, GA with her two sons Ron and John Hutchins.

Mr. Hermas F. Brouillette, 85, of Camellia Circle, Newnan, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at Southland Nursing Home.
Mr. Brouillette was born April 26, 1914 in Central Falls, Rhode Island. He was a retired machinist for an optical company and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Knights of Columbus.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. George Catholic Church on Roscoe Road, Newnan with Father Leo Herbert officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road.

Mrs. Mary Latrelle Vansant Burtz, 87, died Monday, June 28, 1999 in Newnan after a short illness.
She was born in Douglas County, Ga. and grew up in East Point where she and her family resided until moving to Newnan in 1988. She was a member of the East Point First Baptist Churcha and was active in its music program for many years. She was active in the business of her deceased husband, George W. Burtz; and in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shrine Mounted Patrol of which he was a member.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 1, in the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperly Funeral Home in Peachtree City with Dr. Jack Bozeman officiating, assisted by Dr. Alton McEachern. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Davis was born in Georgia Jan. 25, 1915. He was a retired truck driver and cattleman and was a former deputy sheriff in Meriwether County. He also helped built B29 bombers.

She was born in Chambers County, Alabama Dec. 17, 1944. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church.

Mr. William Warren Haisten
Mr. William Warren Haisten, member of a prominent Middle Georgia funeral directing family and well-known civic leader, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999 after an extended illness.
Born April 3, 1915 in Brooks, Ga., Mr. Haisten was the son of the late Marlin Harbard Haisten and Dora Speer Haisten. Mr. Haisten grew up in Senoia and came to Griffin after his graduation from Emory at Oxford in 1934. At that time he joined Haisten Funeral Home of which his father was senior partner.
During World War II Mr. Haisten served with the Army in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. At the time of his discharge he had attained the rank of captain.
A longtime member of Griffin First United Methodist Church, he served as church pianist and assistant organist for many years.
He was named Griffin Man of the Year in 1965. He was a member of the Exchange Club for more than 60 years and as honorary member of the Rotary Club he was named Paul Harris Fellow in 1998.
He is survivied by his wife Dorothy Rhodes Haisten and son William Warren "Bill" Haisten Jr. of Griffin; daughter and son-in-law Dorothy Ann Haisten Spencer and David G. Spencer Sr. of Stone Mountain; two grandchildren, David G. Spencer Jr. and Emily Dean Spencer of Stone Mountain.
A funeral will be Saturday, July 3 at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Griffin. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Griffin.

Mr. Robert "Bob" Scruggs Jr., 56, of Tabby Lynch Road, Moreland, Ga., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at Emory University Hospital.
Mr. Scruggs was born Nov. 14, 1942 in Buffalo, N.Y. He was a retired pilot with U.S. Airways. After starting his career with Braniff International and later flying with Piedmont Airlines he finished his aviation career with U.S. Airways. He was involved with the futherment of thoroughbred racing and breeding in Georgia. He was twice named outstanding owner-breeder for Georgia by the National Thoroughbred Owner-Breeder Association.
A funeral will be Friday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan. The Rev. Richard Bielski will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial.
His mother, Margaret Jordan Scruggs preceded him in death.

Mrs. Jessie Mae Sumlin formerly of Mitchell Street, Newnan, died June 27, 1999 at Franklin Healthcare Center in Franklin, Ga.
She was born Oct. 18, 1907 to the late Mr. Willis Arnold and Mrs. Olivia (Beadles) Arnold. She was preceded in death by her nine sisters and brothers.
She was married to the late Deacon Theo Sumlin for almost 60 years. She worked for Dr. and Mrs. Glover for more than 50 years without missing a day as a cook. She was a member of the New Macedonia Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her illness.
A funeral was Thursday, July 1 at New Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie L. Geter, pastor, officiating. Assisting were the Rev. Rufus Smith as eulogist and was assisted by Rev. C. Melson and Rev. W. J. Johnson. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were friends of the family.
Surviving are three sisters-in-law, Ruby Neal Arnold, Idella Dyer and Naomi Sumlin; nephews and nieces, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Mr. James M. Wilson
Mr. James Mahaffey Wilson, 91, a resident of Wesley Woods of Newnan, died Saturday, July 3, 1999 at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange after experiencing ill health since December.
A funeral was held at graveside at Woodville, Ga. 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6. A memorial service will be held at Wesley Woods of Newnan Thursday, July 8 at 10 a.m.
Mr. Wilson's 91 years covered experiences with the U.S. Marines in the occupation of Nicaragua in the early 1900s, marching in the honor guard at the inauguration of President Herbert Hoover, and receiving a bag of mail from Charles A. Lindbergh in his flight to Nicaragua as a first trans-ocean air mail delivery.
After retirement as a railway mail clerk, he moved to Florida to serve as manager of the office of Preferred Risk Insurance in Miami. He and his late wife, Frances Cheney Wilson, were charter members of Sheridan Hills Baptist Church in Hollywood, Fla., where he served in recent years as the only Deacon Emeritus.
Mr. Wilson's hobby of late years, baking of pies and arranging pie parties, earned him the title of "pie man" with the staff and residents of Wesley Woods. Though he lived in Newnan only two and one-half years, he came to feel at home in Wesley Woods and in First Baptist Church of Newnan.
Mr. Wilson was born May 23, 1908, at Woodville, Ga. to James Lamar Wilson and Frances Mahaffey Wilson.
Surviving are daughter, Luine B. Miller of Newnan; granddaughter, Mrs. Lori Schlicher of Charlotte; grandson, Dr. Jeff Baxter of Atlanta; sisters, Mrs. Mary Frances Ott of Woodville and Mrs. Becky Freeman of Mableton; brother, Lamar Wilson of Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested contributions to the memorial fund at Wesley Woods of Newnan.

Mr. William Dennis Jr., 52, of Cheyenne Lane, Lawrenceville, Ga., died July 2, 1999 at his residence.
He was born in Coweta County October 3, 1946 to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Dennis Sr. While living in Lawrenceville, Ga. he joined Clarkstone First Baptist Church. He attended Central High School. He was employed by Atlanta Security until his death.
A funeral was Wednesday, July 7, at Sellers-Smith R.W.S. Memorial Chapel. Elder Richard Dickey officiated, assisted by the Rev. Henry Teagle and the Rev. Winston McMellon. Mrs. McAfee was born July 8, 1951 in Twiggs County. She first held membership at St. John Baptist Church in Shenandoah, and later was a member of Greater New Life Baptist Church. She was employed by the Coweta County Board of Education for 23 years.
A funeral was 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. W. J. Clark as eulogist, assisted by Rev. John Farmer and other ministers. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Newnan businessman and former mayor Mr. Alton Powell McKinley, 94, died Monday, July 5, 1999 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. McKinley was born November 25, 1904 in Zebulon, Pike County, Ga. He was retired as district manager for International Harvester after 44 years. He was also a dealer in Newnan. He served as past president of the Newnan Kiwanis Club and four terms as mayor of Newnan and on the Newnan City Council. He was associated with the Flint River Council Boy Scouts of America, was a director of the Georgia Farm Association, and was a director of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. He was listed in the 1964 edition of "Who's Who in South Georgia and the South East."
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newnan.

He was born in Coweta County October 3, 1946 to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Dennis Sr. While living in Lawrenceville, Ga. he joined Clarkstone First Baptist Church. He attended Central High School. He was employed by Atlanta Security until his death.
A funeral was Wednesday, July 7, at Sellers-Smith R.W.S. Memorial Chapel. Elder Richard Dickey officiated, assisted by the Rev. Henry Teagle and the Rev. Winston McMellon. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Shaw, Michael Green, Vince Villard, Robert Green, Jackie Moss and Archie Gates.

Ms. Diane Robinson of Newnan died Monday, July 5, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.
Ms. Robinson was born July 24, 1951 in Meriwether County. A graduate of Greenville Concolidated High School, she attended Atlanta Metropolitan University receiving a diploma in culinary arts. She was employed at the Happy Haven retirement home. She was a member of the Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Luthersville where she was a member of the RMB Choir.
A funeral will be Friday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. A. G. Baker as eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Curtis, the Rev. Lowinston Jackson, the Rev. Phillip Baker and other ministers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lizzie Keith Sims, 90, of Hogansville, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.

Mrs. Sims was born May 26, 1909 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late George Redding Keith and the late Belzora Evans Keith. She lived at Hogansville most of her life and was a member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church in Hogansville. She retired in 1974 from Uniroyal Inc. after 50 years of service.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Gordon Sims of Hogansville; sister, Mrs. Dolly Dunn Buehlet of Brandon, Fla. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Leroy Preston Jackson, 77, of Carroll Street, Moreland, Ga. died Thursday, July 8, 1999 at Fayette Community Hospital.
Mr. Jackson was born May 12, 1922 in Moreland. He was a retired prison guard and served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Gary Lee Jones, 31, of Lincoln Street in Hogansville, died Wednesday night, July 7, 1999 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange of injuries received in an automobile accident near Hogansville.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at First Baptist Church of Peachtree City with the Rev. Makihigo Koyama officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
Mr. Jones was born Nov. 14, 1967 in Atlanta and lived in Japan for a number of years. He had lived in Hogansville for the past three years, was a member of First Baptist Church of Peachtree City and was employed at Hoshizaki America in Peachtree City.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ellen Elizabeth Lawson, 52, of Franklin, Ga., were held Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Tom Stutts & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial was in Heard County Memorial Gardens. The Reverends Luther Raines and Murry Hyatt officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Earlene Shelnutt and Mrs. Sherry Cagey. Pallbearers were Mike Harper, Tim Harper, Chad Wood, Mitch Bennett, Gary Pippin and Mark Harper. Mrs. Lawson's son Arnold Ray offered words about his mother and made a special musical dedication on his and his brothers' behalf.
Mrs. Lawson was born Nov. 25, 1946 in Wise County, Virginia. She had lived with her family in Heard County the last 23 years. Before she became ill she was a work coordinator for Playtex. "Miss Mary" was perhaps best knwon and loved for her willingness to take in and mother all the community children.

Mr. Owens was born July 11, 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio. He joined the Mount Vernon First Baptist Church under the pastorage of the Rev. J. T. Coleman. He graduated from Newnan High School in 1982.
