Thomas E. Watson Walters, 74, of Fourth Avenue, Rome died Aug. 29, 1999 at a Rome hospital.
Mr. Walters was born Dec. 31, 1924 in Doerun, son of the late John Alexander Walters and Mary Lydia Causey Walters. Prior to moving to Rome, Mr. Walters had lived in Newnan for more than 40 years.
Mr. Walters was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan. He was employed by William L Bonnell Company before his retirement.
He was preceded in death by brothers Julius Walters, Idus Walters and George Walters.
Graveside services will be held Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at Doerun. Rev. Bill Adams will officiate.
Visitation will be held today (Sept. 1) from 3-5 p.m. at Daniel's Funeral Home in Rome.

Mrs. Mary Guckenberger of Newnan, formerly of Miami, Fla., died Aug. 30, 1999 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisc., she was preceded in death by her husband, Leo A. Guckenberger, and son, Brian A. Guckenberger. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church.

Mrs. Gussie Bell Blount, of Trammell-Bottom Road, Hogansville, Ga., died August 29, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.
She was born June 25, 1932 in Meriwether County to the late Bobby T. Sr. and Jessie Mae Clemons. She was the oldest daughter of fourteen children. Two brothers, Bobby Jr. and O. T.; and two sisters, Mattie and Sallie, preceded her in death.
She attended Meriwether County schools. She joined the Fellowship Baptist Church, Greenville, Ga. at an early age, where she was a former member of the choir and served faithfully as a member of the Mother Board. She was united in marriage to the late Oscar Blount Sr. and to this union five children were born of which one son, Oscar Jr. preceded her in death. She was retired from the William L Bonnell Company, where she worked for 25 years.
A funeral was held Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999 from the fellowship Baptist Church in Greenville, Ga. The Rev. E. J. O'Neal, pastor, officiated and was assisted by the Rev. D. L. Driver, the Rev. Valerie McNeil and the Rev. A. C. O'Neal. Burial was in Fellowship Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were nephews.
Surviving are four children, Mr. and Mrs. John Power (Gussie Luvarn), Mr. Larry Blount, Mr. and Mrs. Winston Porter (Priscilla), Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Blount; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother and sister-in-law, (Willie Major) and Mattie; eight sisters and two brothers-in-law, Betty, Florence, Ruby, Gerilene, (Elizabeth) and Matthew, Gloria, (Juanita) and Oscar and Patricia; four aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Robert John Holly III
Mr. Robert John Holly III, 72, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died at his home Saturday, September 4, 1999 after a long illness.
Mr. Holly was a faithful member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Turin Baptist Church. The Turin Baptist Church awarded him the coveted award of "Deacon Emeritus" for his dedication and service to the Lord. A Navy veteran of WWII, Mr. Holly served in the Pacific war zone. Afterwards, he graduated from the Southern College of Pharmacy and served the community as a pharmacist.
His son, Mr. Robert John "Bobby" Holly IV, preceded Mr. Holly in death.
A graveside funeral service was held Monday afternoon, Sept. 6, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Jonesboro, Ga. with the Rev. John McDuffie presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that contributions be made to either Georgia Baptist Hospice or Turin Baptist Church.

Pastor Duke C. Jones
Pastor Duke C. Jones, 94, of Raintree Drive, Newnan, died Saturday, September 4, 1999 at his residence.
Rev. Jones was a retired evangelist. The sixth of nine children, he was born July 27, 1905 in Georgia to John Thomas and Sara Catherine Jones. Duke Jones left a lasting impression on churches and friends whererever he went with his loving spirit and unwavering conviction in the Gospel, family members said. He never let his loss of eyesight at the age of 46 hold him back from working in his orhcard and garden, and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He relied on memorizing passages from the Bible because he wanted to be called a "Bible preacher." Jones always said, "My greatest need is Jesus, and I want to share Him with everyone else. As long as people will listen and a long as I can talk, I'm gonna preach."
Educated at Atlanta Christian College, Johnson Bible College and Emory University, and ordained at East Point Christian Church in 1927, preacher Duke became nationally known as an inspiring evangelist and speaker. He preached in 365 different churches and held at least 550 revivlas in 26 states and in Belgium. He founded many Christian churches, served as state evangelist for Christian Churches of Virginia, pastored Reidsville Christian Church in North Carolina for 14 years, and pastored Newnan First Christian Church, Liberty Christian Church and Westview Christian Church after returning to Newnan in 1956. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at Johnson Bible College, received the J.B.C. Alumni Distinguished Service Award, and was honored with a scholarship fund at Johnson Bible College named "The Mr. and Mrs. Duke C. Jones Scholarship Fund" to educate young people for full-time Christian ministry.
It was the request of Rev. Jones that flowers be omitted and contributions be made by those desiring to the Duke and Louise Jones Scholarship Fund for young ministers at Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn. 37998 or to Westview Christian Church in Newnan.
A funeral will be Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. Dr. David Eubanks, Dean Floyd Clark and Pastor Tony Sullivan will officiate. The Rev. Joseph Luther "Lucky" Williams, 78, of Perkins Road, Milner, Ga., died Sept. 5, 1999 at the Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin.
He was born in Pike County, son of the late Luther Roscoe Williams and the late Myrtle Crane Williams.
Rev. Williams was a retired carpenter, an ordained Baptist minister and was serving as Assistant Pastor of the Mauk Tabernacle in Mauk, Ga. He had a prison ministry in Butler and in Newnan, as well as a local television station ministry in Jonesboro at different times over the past years. He was a member of the Edward Street Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.
He is survivied by his wife, Naomi Presley Williams of Zebulon; daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jean and the Rev. Scotty Fowler of Woodberry, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Linda Williams, Larry and Judy Williams, Roy and Dyan Williams, all of Griffin, Henry Grady (Buddy) and Ruthie Pilcher of Jasper County, and Wayne and Susan Pilcher of McDonough; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and Hilton Cauthen of Milner and Naomi Turnal of El Monte, California; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hardy was born Dec. 20, 1903 in Meriwether County, son of the late Winston and Lena Keith Hardy. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was a member of the Luthersville United Methodist Church, and was a Maosn. He was a retired merchant and farmer.

A funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Higgins and Son Chapel in Fairburn. The family was receiving friends Monday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Howard "Cecil" Johnson
Mr. Howard "Cecil" Johnson, 88, of Lassetter Road, Sharpsburg, died Saturday, September 11, 1999 at Meriwether Memorial Hospital in Warm Springs.
Mr. Johnson was born March 11, 1911 in Coweta County. He was the son of the late James Andrew Johnson and Willie Sauipheri Looper. He was a farmer by occupation, was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Moose Lodge.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Hillcrest Chapel funeral home in Newnan with the Rev. Willard Dean officiating, assisted by Chaplain Jan Tolbert of Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center.
Pallbearers will be Ken Starnes, Andy Rogers, Ricky McCarter and Jim Palmer.

Mrs. Lucy Irene Jones, 92, of Newnan, died Sunday, September 12, 1999 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Jones was born Nov. 8, 1906 in Meriwether County, Ga. She was a homemaker.
A funeral will be held at the graveside in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road, Newnan, Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ed Elliott officiating.
Surviving are son, David Gordy of Senoia; and daughter, Christine O'Neal of Gay, Ga.; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Mr. J. W. Farmer, 79, of Newnan, died Tuesday, September 14, 1999 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center after a long illness.
Mr. Farmer, a member of Newnan Church of Christ, was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education.
The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home on Farmer Industrial Boulevard in Newnan Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 5-8 p.m.
A funeral will be noon Thursday, Sept. 16, at Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Gill officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

Mr. Paul Dupree, 63, of U.S. Highway 29 South, Moreland, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999 at Hospice LaGrange.
Mr. Dupree was born Nov. 4, 1935 in Cherokee County, Alabama to Grady Dupree and Edna Fortenberry. He was a masonry contractor and member of the Baptist faith.
A funeral will be at Hillcrest Chapel funeral home Friday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roy Coggin officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial park.
