Mr. James O. Hardin Jr.
Mr. James O. Hardin Jr., long-time owner of WCOH Radio and active civic worker, died Wednesday morning.
Mr. Hardin was owner and operator of WCOH, "Welcome City of Homes" radio from October 1953 to November 1, 1981 when it was sold to Dallas M. Tarkenton of Athens, Ga.
During his radio days, Hardin became the local weather observer for the National Weather Service, and after he retired from the radio station the observation station went with him to his home at Newnan Pines where he continued his weather watching duties.
He was active in the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce and the Newnan Kiwanis Club, as well as being one of the early officers of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. He was also public relations director for many years for the Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival, making promotional appearances and announcing events during the labor day festivals.
Among survivors is Hardin's wife, Louise, of Newnan.

Ms. Theresa Buccinna, 59, of Lone Oak Road, Hogansville, Ga. died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 at her residence.
Ms. Buccinna was born Oct. 3, 1939 in Bronx, N.Y. She was retired from banking and was a member of St. George Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan Friday, Sept. 24, from 7-9 p.m. The Rosary will be at McKoon Funeral Home Friday evening at 7 p.m.
A funeral will be at St. George Catholic Church Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. with Father Leo Herbert officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. James O. Hardin Jr., 80, of Newnan, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 at Southwest Hospice after a long illness.
Mr. Hardin was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Marine Reserves and a retired owner of radio station WCOH in Newnan. He was active in the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, serving two terms as chamber president; as well as serving on the board of Coweta Festivals Inc., the group that produces the Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival; and on the Georgia Tourism Board. Mr. Hardin was a past president of the Newnan Kiwanis Club, a past Kiwanis lieutenant governor, and Hixon Fellow. He was a founding member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newnan.
The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Friday evening at McKoon Funeral Home on Jackson Street in Newnan.
A funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Roscoe Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul's building fund.

Mrs. Lucile Ingram Bagley
Mrs. Lucile Ingram Bagley died September 22, 1999 in St. Petersburg, Fla. after a long illness. She was a native of Alpharetta, Ga. and lived in Newnan and Sharpsburg, Ga. for a number of years. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla. and then to St. Petersburg in 1990.
She was retired after 30 years from National Biscuit Company in Atlanta.
Her husband, Glen Bagley and her grandson, Glen Chuck, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Turin Memorial Gardens in Turin, Ga. with the Rev. John McDuffey officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
She is survivied by two daughters, Polly Kennedy of St. Petersburg and Lara Jackson of Franklin, N.C.; two sons, R. L. Sanders of Cumming, Ga., Preston Sanders of Dawsonville, Ga. and sister, Mrs. Ruth Day of Alpharetta, Ga.; 15 grandchildren.

Mrs. Corena Phillips Gilbert
Mrs. Corena Phillips Gilbert, 87, of Little New York Road, Whitesburg, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999 at her residence.
Mrs. Gilbert was born in Carroll County on January 27, 1912, the daughter of the late Weldon Alfonzo Carroll and Cora Dingler Carroll. She was retired from Bibb Manufacturing where she had worked for 40 years and was a member of Ephesus Christian Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, C. P. Phillips, and two daughters, Louise Rainey and Zane Carroll.
She is survivied by her husband, James Daniel Gilbert, three sons and daughters-in-law, Damon and June Phillips, Jackie and Nancy Phillips and Charles and Sue Phillips, all of Whitesburg, 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at 3 p.m. from Martin & Hightower West Center Street Chapel with the Rev. J. C. Cook officiating. Music will be provided by Harold McWhorter. Pallbearers will be Chuck Phillips, Keith Powers, Kevin Powers, Ricky Phillips, Tommy Phillips and Pat Phillips. Burial will follow in Ephesus Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. John L. Smith
Mr. John L. Smith, 605 Smith St., Newnan, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.
Mr. Smith was born July 3, 1941 to Sara Frances King and the late Mr. John L. Satterwhite. Step-father Mr. Charlie A. King preceded him in death, as did a sister, Mrs. Charlie Mae King, and two brothers, Leonard Satterwhite and Charlie King Jr.
He joined Smith Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age. He served faithfully until his death. He served as president of the United Methodist Men and was elected assistant chairman of the board, and many other capacities whenever asked.
He was employed at Fort James for 30 years, where he retired. He was an honored employee, loving husband, and a wonderful father and friend.
A funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 at Smith Chapel United Methodist Church on Lazenby Road in Newnan with the Rev. J. C. Neal, pastor, as eulogist. Assisting will be the Rev. R. W. Sutton. Burial will be in Smith Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Baldwin, J. C. Patterson, Charlie Glenn, Alfred Ragland, Jackie Render and Michael Ball.

Mrs. Victoria Martin Jacobs, 97, of Sharpsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.
Mrs. Jacobs was born Sept. 24, 1902 in Cleburne County, Ala., daughter of Austin Martin and Lula Teal. She was a homemaker and member of Sharpsburg Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Luther Jacobs.
A funeral will be held at graveside Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m. in Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Walter Baker will officiate. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. R. F. "Skinner" Plant, 81, of Grantville, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.
Mr. Plant was born June 21, 1918 in Meriwether County, son of the late James Franklin Plant and the late Mary Ann Cook Plant. He lived in Grantville most of his life, was an Army veteran, and was a member of the Baptist faith. Along with his brothers, he ownerd and operated Plant Service Station in Newnan for more than 30 years prior to his retirement.
A funeral was held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27 at the chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Willard Dean officated, and burial was in Grantville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ben Monroe, James R. Alexander, Everett Hendrix, Larry Freeman, Otis Smith and Kevin Miller.

Ms. Ann Samples
Ms. Ann Samples of Sharpsburg died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at home.
Ms. Samples was born and raised in Newnan, daughter of the late Ernest W. Samples and the late Bernice Stella Smallwood Samples. She opened a bookkeeping and income tax service in Riverdale in 1973, which she operated for many years, and was a member of Riverdale Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis L. Johnson.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Riverdale Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Cecil Murphey and the Rev. Steve Austin will officiate, and entombment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
Pallbearers will be Jason Jordan, Gregg Redwine, Ken Furlow, Ted Samples, T. J. Samples and Richard Etheridge.

Mr. Dean Dare Sterling

Mr. Dean Dare Sterling, 74, of Newnan, died Sept. 25, 1999.
A native of Lockport, Illinois, he was born Nov. 20, 1924, the son of William Hopkins and Edna Francis Dare Sterling. He graduated with wings and commission in 1944 at Douglas, Arizona. he was a U.S. Army Air Corp and U.S. Air Force pilot. It was during this time that he married his wife of 55 years, Sue Harris Sterling. After World War II, when he served in the Pacific Theater, he remained in the Air Force, and retired in 1963 as a major. In 1949 he graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Textile Engineering. His varied interests led him into work as a farmer, U.S. Postmaster, Ford dealership and textile engineer. In 1970 he moved to Macon, Ga. and on to Newnan in 1971 as Division Textile Engineer with The Bibb Co. He had attended First United Methodist Church of Newnan since 1972 and served in many capacities including his interest in the lay ministry, having served on the board for the lay program.
A funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Newnan with the Rev. Gary Parrish, the Rev. Bill Curington and the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are wife, Sue Harris Sterling of Newnan; daughters, Karen Deaton and her husband Randy of Macon, Ga., Micki Weintraub and her husband Richard of Burke, Va.; son, Wynn Sterling and his wife Rebecca of Huntsville, Ala.; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Wright was born Jan. 21, 1932, son of the late Osie M. Wright and the late Grace Farrell Wright. He had lived in Opelika for a number of years.

Mr. Bobby W. Shelnutt, 63, of Willow Drive, Newnan, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999 at Newnan Hospital.
Mr. Shelnutt was born Jan. 4, 1936 in Troup County, Ga. He operated Shelnutt's Grocery and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
