Carl M. Dukes
Carl Michael Dukes, 46 of Waynesboro died, Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 in Swainsboro.
His funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Phinazee and Son Chapel, with the Rev. Willie James Jackson Jr. officiating. Burial was in Pines Cemetery.
Mr. Dukes, a native of Burke County, was a car salesman. He attended Blakeney High School but finished high school and college in Newark, N.J. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Lou Dukes. Survivors include a son, Hassan Thomas; two sisters, Charlene Dukes and Jacqueline Dukes, both of Philadelphia; and grandmother, Eula Hughes of Waynesboro. Pallbearers were Edward A. Dukes, Ronald Dukes, Edward M. Dukes and Christopher Dukes.
Britton M. McClain
Britton Minus “BM” McClain, 80, of Waynesboro died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Bethel Baptist Church. He will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mr. McClain was a lifelong resident of Burke County where he retired from the Burke County Landfill. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and served his country in the Marine Corps and in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Williams McClain, and a great-grandchild, Brad Nelson. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Ray Saxon of Waynesboro; a brother, Alvin McClain Sr. of Alexander; a brother-in-law, Thomas E. Williams of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Carlene Nelson and Sonya Lewis, both of Waynesboro and Paige Braithwaite of Alpharetta; and six great-grandchildren, Chris Nelson, Laney Lewis, Gray Lewis, Coleman Lewis, Chase Braithwaite and Alexandra Braithwaite. Pallbearers will be Alvin McClain Jr., Mark McClain, W.Z. McClain Jr., Howard McClain, Johnny Jenkins, Charlie Hillis and Herbert Hillis. The family will receive friends today (Wednesday, Feb. 19) from 7-9 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

James Hughes
James “J. Bird” Hughes, 52, of Waynesboro died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 in Chester, Ga. His funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Roberson Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Williams Sr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hughes was a native of Burke County. He attended Burke County schools and was a teacher while living in Dodge County. He was certified to become a minister and was also a painter. Survivors include, nine sisters and five brothers-in-law, Georgia Hughes, Bessie and John Watson, Josie Hughes, Daisy and Johnny Mims, Shirley and Curtis Hughes, Tracie Hughes, Claretha and Mickey Griffin and Nadeen and Joseph Bates, all of Waynesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Willie and Dene Hughes of Augusta; and his parents, Sammie Lee and Joe Hughes of Waynesboro.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Vernice G. Keller
Vernice Gilmore Keller, 87, of Charlotee, N.C. and formerly of Waynesboro, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Rowland officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
Mrs. Keller, a native of Wadesboro, N.C., was the daughter of the late Walter and Lou Munlin Gilmore and the oldest of 11 children. She attended Business College in Charlotte. She was active in the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro where she taught the youth and sang in the choir. She was also very active in the local garden club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Keller.
Survivors include two sisters, Agnes McGee of Charlotte and Brenda Hill of Oregon; three brothers, Max Gilmore of Colorado, David Gilmore of Virginia and Ralph Gilmore of Wadesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro.
Mary G. Atkinson
Mary Greiner Atkinson, 84, of Brentwood Terrace Nursing Facility died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at Burke Medical Center.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Burke Memorial Gardens with Dr. David Carter officiating.
Mrs. Atkinson spent all of her adult life in Burke County and was a homemaker and also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Atkinson.
Survivors include two sons, James Ray Day of Waynesboro and Gary Andrew Atkinson of Augusta; a sister, Eddie Jean Ramage of Waynesboro; a brother, Joe H. Greiner of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, Jackie D. Lee, Terra N. Williams, Jennifer Emery, Jason Atkinson and Jana Atkinson; and seven great-grandchildren.

Clarice S. Dean
Clarice S. Dean of Thomson died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens in Thomson, with Dr. Mark Harris officiating.
Mrs. Dean was a member of Curtis Baptist Church and a former member of First Baptist Church in Thomson. She was a kindergarten teacher and operated a day care center in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Lee Dean.
Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Dean of Decatur, William E. Dean of Augusta and Christopher C. Dean of Lexington, N.C.; a daughter, Gloria D. Shivers of Vidette; a brother, Hoke Smith of Orlando, Fla.; four sisters, Helen S. Alcorn of Valdosta, Falice S. Harper of Albany, Imogene S. Gates of Ft. Pierce, Fla. and Naomi S. Overby of Duluth; eight grandchildren, Holly Lord, Chad Dean, Ryan Dean, Lynn Lewis, Sandy Bowles, Suzanne Shivers, Seth Dean and Noah Dean; and three great-grandchildren.

James A. Simmons IV
James A. “Jimbo” Simmons IV, 31, of Statesboro died Wed-nesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. His funeral was 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, at Pittman Park United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Mike Huling and Hollie Tapley officiating. Grave-side services were 3 p.m., at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynes-boro.
Mr. Simmons, a native of Orangeburg, S.C., had lived in Statesboro and Orlando, Fla. He attended Forest Park School and was a 1992 honor graduate of Oakridge High School in Orlando. He attended High Hope in Statesboro and was a member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church. Survivors include his parents, Vicki F. and James A. Simmons III of Statesboro; two sisters, Renee Scrima of Winter Park, Fla. and Lisa D. Hardy of Statesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Christopher J. and Susan Beth Simmons of Statesboro; and 12 nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Dwight F. Allen
Dwight Franklin Allen, 56, of Leesburg died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003.
His funeral was at 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, at Mathews Funeral Home, with the Revs. Robert Varnadoe and Tommy Lowery officiating. Burial was 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28, at The Allen Cemetery in Waynesboro.Mr. Allen, a native of Springfield, Mo., had lived in the Albany area for the past 23 years, after moving from Waynesboro, where he was a member of the city’s police department. He was a retired sergeant with the Albany Police Department with 22 years of service and was a National Guard veteran. He attended Harvest Temple Church of God and The First Christian Church. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Loyal Order of Moose and was active with the Officer MAC Program for schools and Sgt. Support Services for the Albany Police Department. Survivors include his widow, Sherrie Allen of Leesburg; two sons, Stephan D. Allen of Augusta and Jonathan D. Allen of Albany; a daughter, Tonya Dekker of Augusta; two stepsons, Christopher B. Rhoades of Birmingham, Ala. and Matthew W. Rhoades of Columbia, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Aimee Lester of North Augusta, S.C.; two brothers, Rick Allen of Montgomery, Ala. and David Allen of Swains-boro; and three sisters, Letty Lewis and Jamie Murray, both of Savannah and Debra Johnson of Dublin.

Gertie Ward
Gertie Ward, 99, of Midville died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at Burke Medical Center.
Her funeral was 1 p.m. Monday, March 3, at Robinson Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roy Gaines officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ward, a native of Burke County, was a schoolteacher. She was a member of Robinson Grove Baptist Church in Mid-ville where she served as ward leader, missionary worker and deaconess. She attended Walker Baptist High School in Augusta and performed volunteer activities in the community.
Survivors include a son, Jack Walker of Midville; two sisters, Ella M. Grant of Augusta and Masnie Frazier of New York; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Thomas Hudson, Clinton Kent, Jack Walker and Eugene Hardwick.
Honorary pallbearers were deaconesses and the Missionary Society.Robert Lee Jones
Robert Lee Jones, 38, of Millen died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 in Columbia County.
His funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Phinazee and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles A. Shipman officiating. Burial was in Jones Grove Church Cemetery.
Mr. Jones was a native of Jenkins County. He was a member of Bark Camp Baptist Church.Survivors include his widow, Donnie Jones of Oliver; a daughter, Shannon Alston; two stepdaughters, Cynth Mack and Felicia Alston, both of Oliver; two stepsons, Tony Alston and Caleb Clifton, both of Oliver; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Neely Jones of Waynesboro and Willie James Jones and Toney McNelly, both of Hephzibah and John and Gloria Jones of Jacksonville, N.C.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mattie Harden and Annie Lacue, both of Millen and Julia and Robert Plummer of Dublin; and his mother, Annie Mae Jones of Millen.

Annie M. Lawson
Annie Mae Lawson of Waynesboro died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at Brentwood Terrace Health Center. Her funeral was noon, Saturday, March 8, at Bottsford Spring Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Thomas officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Lawson, a native of Burke County, was a homemaker. She moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. and became a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years. When she returned to Waynes-boro, she reunited with Bottsford Spring Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a special nephew, Carl Mobley Jr.; nieces, Martha Feastes, Thelma Kelly of St. Petersburg, Fla., Sophia Rouse of Atlanta, Leila Williams, Emma Jones of Waynes-boro and a special niece, Vernita Mobley White.
Pallbearers were Stanley Williams, Darrell Williams, Warren Mobley, Jerry Rogers and Maurice Kyler. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Bottsford Spring Missionary Baptist Church.
