Mrs. Bertha Miller
Mrs. Bertha Miller died October 20, 1999.
Daughter of the late Louis and Flora Fearby Hill, she was born in a spot in Coweta County known as Evergreen. She attended Grantville Training Public School when the highest grade offered was the ninth grade. She graduated from the ninth grade in May 1930 and was the only student in the class. The graduation ceremony was held at John Wesley Methodist Church, the church which she had joined at an early age. She remained an active member for the rest of her life. Miss Bertha then moved on to Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta and graduated in June 1933. She entered Clark University in the autumn of 1933 but found it necessary to withdraw after a few weeks due to lack of funds. However, she never lost her strong desire for learning and she vigorously pushed and assisted her son to higher achievement.
Miss Bertha married the late J. D. Miller Sr. in 1934 and they had one son, J. D. Miller Jr. From the mid 1930s to the early 1950s, Mrs. Miller was either a domestic worker or washed clothes in her home for private families. During the early 1950s she was employed as a lunchroom worker at Grantville Public School. However, in 1956 she stopped outside the home work and became a loving grandmother to first one, then two, then three grandchildren. This grandmother relationship took her to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1962 and she moved back and forth between Grantville and Milwaukee until 1966. That autumn she returned to work in the Grantville Public School lunchroom and remained employed there until retirement in 1981.
Among the many things Mrs. Bertha Miller enjoyed was cooking. She would inform any, and all, who would listen that she made her "things from scratch." Her specialties were her pound cakes and a spicy relish which she called "chacha."
Even though Mrs. Miller was involved in the total church at John Wesley, her all-consuming passion was the Sunday School. Her contribution as teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class was recognized in early September 1999 when the class was officially named the Bertha Miller Sunday School Class. Outside of her church work, and through her close association with Mrs. Alice Malcolm, she became excitedly involved in volunteer activities at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital. For the last several years of her life, this every-Wednesday involvement added zest to her day.
A funeral will be Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Grantville. The Rev. Joe P. Geter will be eulogist, assisted by Dr. Thomas E. Hines Jr. and the Rev. Ray Robinson. Burial will be in Grantville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be the United Methodist Men and friends.

Miller Jr. and his wife Annette; sister, Louise Hill Hines; four grandchildren, Karen, Steven (Joyce), Eydie Miller Ellis (Robert), and Max (Rosa); three great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Emma Miller and Joshua Haynesworth; two brothers-in-law, Ira (Lillian) and Stanton (Mary) along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
