Mr. Robert L. Betts Sr., 77, of the Harrisonville Community of Troup County, died Sunday, July 9, 2000 at his home.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 11 in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. W. T. Bates and the Rev. Jesse Sims will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.
Pallbearers will be Jack Dollar, Bobby Kent, Tim Monteith, Leroy Kent, William Minton and Frank Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene White and Jimmy Smith.
Mr. Betts was born April 30, 1923 in Lee County, Alabama, son of the late William and Ida Plant Betts. He had lived in Troup County most of his life and was a member of Harrisonville Baptist Church. He retired from Southern Bell and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the BB Hunting Club. He received a Purple Heart for his service as an Army Paratrooper in Normandy in World War II and was held as a prisoner of war for 11 months.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vivian Betts of Harrisonville; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Johnny Harris of Harrisonville; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Dianne Betts of Jonesboro; sisters, Mrs. Odessa Kent of Hogansville and Mrs. Alice Hammonds of Walnut Grove; grandchildren, Joel Betts and Jeremy Betts of Jonesboro, Miss Amanda Harris and Miss Katie Harris of Harrisonville; a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Mrs. Kathryn Christian of Huntsville, Ala.

Mr. Delmas Cook, 76, of Franklin, Ga., died Sunday, July 9, 2000 at the West Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Cook was born in Heard County, Georgia, on February 5, 1924 to the late Charlie Heard Cook and Fannie Williams Cook. He was a retired machinist for the William L Bonnell Company of Newnan. He was a Christian by faith.

The Rev. Billy Dale King, 75, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000 at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jonesboro, he lived in several cities, including Blytheville, Ark. and Newnan, Ga., before moving back to Jonesboro, Ark. several years ago. He was a Baptist minister for 57 years, pastoring churches in Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. He was a member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Ark., and was an Army Veteran, serving in World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and a sister.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nettie Robinson King of Jonesboro, Arkansas; son, Billy James King and his wife Nettie King of Newnan; two daughters, Brook and Retha Lackey and Jim and Mary Lackey of Jonesboro, Ark., and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ann King of Newnan, Ga.; brother, Ralph King of Jonesboro, Ark.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Emerson and Sons Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro, Ark., with Danny Elrod and Gerald Drope officiating. Burial was at Unity Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ark.

Mr. Jessie was the first of five children, born May 21, 1935 in Mobile, Alabama. He was a graduate of Central High School, Mobile Alabama, Class of 1955. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years. He returned home from the Army and continued his education at Alabama State University in Montgomery where he was awarded his B.S. degree in Secondary Education. He married Mary Faye Williams June 24, 1967. During their 33 years of marriage he was employed in Meriwether County, Ga. He also worked as a coach in Coweta County. He retired from the school system in 1994, and during his professional career he received many distinguished awards for his contributions in athletics. His life was one of love an service to others, especially young people; and he was instrumental in many receiving scholarship awards to further their education.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Faye Jessie; daughters, Carolyn Natasha Jessie and Sharolyn Jessie, of Baltimore, Maryland; step-father, Leroy Ford; sisters, Carolyn L. Mr. Rufus Jones, 77, of Grantville died July 9, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.
He was member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church, Grantville, where he served as trustee, superintendent of Sunday School, member of the Senior and Combined Choirs and president of the United Methodist Men. He also served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of the Grantville Lodge #264, Free and Accepted Masons, having served as Worshipful Master and received life status for more than 35 years of service.
A funeral will be Thursday, July 13 at 2 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe P. Geter will be eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Walter McMullen, Dr. Thomas E. Hines and the Rev. Mr. Jack Donald "Don" Spence
Mr. Jack Donald "Don" Spence, 58, of Ellijay, Ga., died Sunday, June 18, 2000 after a brief illness with pancreatic cancer at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Spence was the son of the late Jack J. and Pearl Bowman Spence of Resaca, Ga. He was an only child, a gift late in their lives and always very special to them. Before his birth, his parents started and operated a chenile shop just south of Dalton on U.S. 41. Having grown up and worked in this environment, he also became an entrepreneur in the early days of carpet backing lamination in the Dalton area. In 1964 he designed, and along with a partner built and manufactured a machine which they used to originally establish E&S Finishing Company. Throughout his life he enjoyed several other careers, but was most at home in his final one of 27 years in the State Circulation Department of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution where he served as division manager of North Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina at the time of his death. Mr. Spence was tall in stature and life. He was a big-hearted, kind and generous mountain man, full of fun, humor and wonderful stories.
A funeral was held June 20 in the chapel of Love Fuenral Home in Dalton, Ga. with the Rev. Jimmy Brown of Hogansville officiating. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery in Dalton next to his parents.

Mrs. DeVane was born October 9, 1927 in Hadock, Ga. She was employed at Caldwell Heating and Air Conditioning. She was salutatorian of Americus High School Class of 1944 and served as treasurer of Freeman Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 30 years.

He was born in Griffin, Ga., son of Robert Franklin Moore of Griffin, and Phyllis Holt Moore of Newnan. He was employed by Super Service Co. of Ellenwood, Ga., and was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Keith was born Nov. 18, 1920 in Meriwether County, son of the late Albert Sidney Keith and the late Bertha Moncrief Keith. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was a retired dairyman, and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Hogansville and served a number of years as president of the brotherhood.

Mr. William F. Amey
Mr. William Franklin Amey, 65, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Alvista Healthcare in Greenville.
Mr. Amey was born April 29, 1935, in Luthersville to Allie and Cornelia Amey. He attended Luthersville High School, but had to quit school at an early age to help earn money for his mother and younger siblings. He joined Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church at a very young age and served on the Junior Usher Board when he was a teenager, and became an ordained deacon at an early age. He was a member of the choir and served for many years as president. He was married to Elnora (Lady) Phillips.
Mr. Amey was hard working, dependable, well-liked, and couldn't seem to say no to overtime on his off days. He worked for William Bonnell Co., Ford Motor Company, and Delta Air Lines, where he retired with more than 20 years of service.
A funeral will be held today, July 16, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Curtis will officiate, assisted by the Rev. A.L. Birts. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers, and granddaughters and nieces will act as flower ladies.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Cynthia, Ronald "Pete," Philip and Deborah, William Allen, Corey Crum, Michael Smith, and daughter Alisa Darlene Simpson and her husband Larry; brothers and sisters-in-law Theodore and Francis, Willie B. and Mildred, James, and Tommy and Judy; sisters and brothers-in-law Lizzie and C.R. Mr. Walter Caswell
Mr. Walter Caswell, 80, of Newnan, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Starcrest Nursing Home.
Mr. Caswell was the son of the late Robert and Janie Caswell. He was a long time member of East Newnan Baptist Church. A retired over-the-road truck driver, Mr. Caswell served in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his brother, R. L. Caswell.
A funeral will be held Monday, July 17, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Shannon will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn. The family will received visitors tonight, Sunday, July 16, from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Rave J. Plant, 86, of Grantville, died Saturday, July 15, 2000 at his home.
A funeral was 2 p.m. Monday, July 17 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Jimmie L. Willis officiated and burial was in the Grantville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Freeman, Ben Monroe, Jimmy Gantt, Robert Ward, Otis Smith and Mike Smith.
Mr. Plant was born July 15, 1914 in Meriwether County, son of the late James Frank Plant and the late Mary Ann Cook Plant. He was a member of the Baptist faith, and, along with his brothers, he owned and operated Plant's Chevron Service Station in Newnan for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Opal Lancaster Plant of Grantville; one step-son, Randy Alexander of Gray; sister and brother in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Grover (Rebecca) Johnson of Hogansville; sister-in-law, Mrs. Doris Plant of Grantville; three step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thelma S. Reese of Prince George Court, Riverdale, Ga. and formerly of Newnan, died Friday, July 14, 2000 at her residence.
A funeral will be Tuesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Zion Grove Baptist Church, 606 Pryor Street, Atlanta, Ga. with the Rev. H. D. Freeman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be the Deacon Board of Zion Grove Baptist Church. Flower ladies will be the Mother Board and Deaconesses of Zion Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Reese was born February 19, 1912 in Newnan, Ga. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Rosa) Smith. She was preceded in death by a sister, Davies, and a brother, Devalon. She received her education in the public schools of Coweta County. She was a dedicated member of Zion Hill Baptist Church until 1985. She moved to Atlanta and joined Zion Grove Baptist Church where she served on the senior Mother Board and dearly loved her pastor. She was married to the late Clifford Reese for 55 years and they had two children, C. Ann Reese and James A. Reese.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Bowers, 90, of Newnan, died Monday, July 17, 2000 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.
She was born January 17, 1910 in Selma, Alabama, and worked during her lifetime as a nurse.

Mr. Charles Gary Dykes
Mr. Charles Gary Dykes, 61, of Augusta, Ga., and formerly of Newnan, died at his home Monday, July 17, 2000.
Mr. Dykes was born in Dodge County but lived most of his life in Newnan before moving to Augusta two years ago. A self-employed painting contractor, he was best known by those who loved him as "Papa Charlie" and the best fishing buddy anyone ever had. Mr. Dykes was a member of Open Door Baptist Church in Senoia, Ga.
He is survived by Mrs. Hazel Dykes of Newnan; daughters, Mrs. Sheila Hughey of Thomaston, Ga., Mrs. Betty Ann Fountain and Mrs. Paulette McCranie, both of Eastman, Ga., and Mrs. Kathy Bonham of Brunswick, Ga.; step-sons, Mr. Roy Bishop of Salisbury, North Carolina, Mr. Jerry Bishop of Alpharetta, Ga., Mr. Perry Bishop of Newnan, Ga.; step-daughters, Mrs. Martha Bishop Lambert of Montgomery, Ala., Mrs. Linda Bishop Sutherland of Acworth, Ga., Mrs. Connie Bishop Sharp, Alpharetta, Ga.; sister, Mrs. Ethel Fitchit of Hawkinsville, Ga.; 18 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
