Mr. Wallace W. Benton
Mr. Wallace W. Benton, 79, died Aug. 7, 2000 at his residence.

A native of Cairo, Mr. Benton was a retired textile mills supervisor. He was a member of Sargent Baptist Church.

Mr. Benton was past master of Mount Hermon Lodge 304 in Columbus and was affiliated with Sylvan Lodge 429 in Newnan.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry White officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with full Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home today from 7-9 p.m.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Gladys Caldwell Benton; children, Nancy Hines of Douglasville, Stan Benton of Augusta; grandchildren, Phillip Benton, Keith Benton, Chance Hines, Piper Hines; great-grandchildren, Cavin Hamrick, Kendall Hamrick, Mason Hines, Paden Hines, Ellijah Hines, Robert Condon.

Dr. John R. Cates
John Robinson Cates, MD, of Pomander Walk, Rye, N. Y. died Aug. 5, 2000.

Dr. Cates was born Aug. 13, 1918 in Newnan, the son of John R. and Eva Arnold Cates. He was a psychiatirst, actor and painter.

Dr. Cates completed a six-year medical degree at Emory University in Atlanta. During World War II, he served as a ship's doctor on a destroyer in the North Atlantic.

After the war, he made his home in New York City, where he pursued a career in psychoanalysis.

In retirement, Dr. Cates pursued his passion for acting, as a member of the Actors Equity Union. He also was a painter at the Art Students League.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at 11:30 a.m. at the Ethical Culture Society, 2 West 64th St., Manhattan.

Survivors include sons, Andrew John Cates, Edward David Cates, MD; daughter, Alicia Jennifer Cates; and sisters, Lucia Cates Green of Newnan, Laura Cates Inzer of Fairfax, Va.

Mr. James C. Braswell
Mr. James C. Braswell, 79, of Luthersville, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Braswell was born Dec. 2, 1920 in Meriwether County to the late Clarence and Clara Rowe Braswell. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County. Mr. Braswell was a retired employee of the state of Georgia, having served as a theater operator for the Little White House in Warm Springs.

A grave-side funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in the Rocky Mount Community of Meriwether County. The Rev. Bryan Geter will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening.

Surviving are his sons, Jimmy Braswell of Centre, Ala., Bobby Braswell of Luthersville, and Tony Braswell of Starr, S.C.; sister, Josie Wyche of Newnan; brother Harold Braswell of Luthersville and his wife Sally; sisters-in-law Dot Braswell of Hogansville and Lucille Braswell of Luthersville; brother-in-law Robert Tolbert of Villa Rica; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Col. Douglas Cleveland Harvey
Col. Douglas Cleveland Harvey, 55, of Palmetto, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at his home following a brief illness.

Col. Harvey was born in Ohio to the late Wallace and Helen McGee Harvey. Doug, as he was fondly known, was a colonel in the United States Air Force, and was affiliated with the American Legion. He was a Presbyterian.

A funeral was held Monday, Aug. 8 at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery with full military honors.

Surviving are his life partner, Linda Steen of Palmetto; children, Sean Fletcher of Niagara Falls, Canada, Nick Harvey and his wife Terry Lynn of Newnan, Tiffany Wallace of Mableton, and Elizabeth Harvey of Powder Springs; sister, Brenda Baldwin of Toronto, Canada; brother, Paul Kaisig of Amprior, Canada; and grandchildren Katelyn, Kristin, Zackery, Chaselyn, Trever, Justin, Dylan, Austin, and Ashlyn.

Mr. Genarrh Shoemake
Mr. Genarrh Shoemake, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, following a long illness.

Mr. Shoemake was born Aug. 22, 1914 to Thomas W. and Mary S. Shoemake. He worked at Arnco Mills and the American Can Co., where he retired in 1977. Mr. Shoemake was a member of the Whitesburg Christian Church in Whitesburg. He was preceded in death by his son, Garland Shoemake.

A funeral was held Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 in the Chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Pastor Caryl Strange officiated, and burial was in Forest Lawn. His grandsons, Barry, Benjie, Tim and Jeffrey Shoemake, Bruce Frazier, Rodney Fowler, and Alan June served as pallbearers.

Surviving are his wife, Clestelle Dean Shoemake; sons, Sherwin Shoemake and his wife Shelby, and Danny Shoemake and his wife Sandra; daughter-in-law Charlotte Shoemake; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. James Williams, 66, of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000.

A funeral was held Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at the Harper Hines Memorial Chapel in Atlanta. The Rev. C.L. Carter, pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church, officiated, and burial was in Kennedy Memorial Gardens in Ellenwood.

Mr. Williams is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Williams; sisters, Mrs. Gerard Rogers, and her husband Gerard, Minister Jean Strozier, and Mattie Furlow; aunts, Jessie Lemon and Rosa Lee Lemon; brother-in-law Michael Strozier, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ms. Angela Blandenburg, 34, of Newnan, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000.

Ms. Blandenburg was born March 22, 1966 in Newnan to Margaret and Robert Blandenburg Jr. She united with Mt. Sinai Baptist Church at a young age.

A funeral will be held Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Sellers-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. J.C. Mackie will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Melvin Brittain.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blandenburg, Jr.; children, Antwan M. Echols and Maria Echols; sister, Agnes M. Blandenburg; brother, Aaron Murrell Blandenburg; and special friend Lee Andrew Moss, all of Newnan; two nieces, three nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Joe Rainey
Mr. Joe Rainey, 78, of Newnan, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Mr. Rainey was born July 28, 1922 in Heard County. He was drafted a few days after the start of World War II, where he served in the United States Army. He stayed overseas until the end of the war, participated in the Normandy invasion, and was a prisoner of war on two different occasions. He was retired from his grading company, Rainey Construction.

A funeral will be held today, Aug. 10, 2000, at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Dennis will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe, Keith, and Mark Rhodes, Jackie Roberts, John Rosser, and Brendon Shumate, and Lamar Rainey will be an honorary pallbearer.

Surviving are his wife, Lucy Rainey; daughter, Gail Rosser; and brother George "G.W." Rainey, all of Newnan; two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Malcolm V. Leach
Mr. Malcolm V. Leach, 85, of Newnan, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Leach was born May 31, 1915, in Newnan to the late James C. and Sallie O'Neil Leach. He was a salesmen for Murray Printing Company, and a member of First United Methodist Church.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Chapel. The Rev. Gary Parrish will officiate, assisted by the Revs. Larry Patton and Bill Cureton. Serving as pallbearers will be John Mitchell III, Brad Sears, James Warren, Brant Frost, Grady Fleming, Richard Brooks, and Robert Carmichael. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the building fund of Newnan First United Methodist Church, 33 Greenville St., Newnan, GA, 30263. The family will receive visitors tonight, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Tina Annette Jackson Latimer, 28, of Carrollton, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000.

Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of Stephen Jackson and Martha Jackson of Carrollton. She was a teacher at East Coweta High School and a member of Southern Hills Christian Church.

A funeral will be held today, Aug. 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Bethany Christian Church. Ministers John Latimer, Mike Wall, and Thom Jackson will officiate, and burial will be at the Latimer Family Farm. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Buddy Lambert, Dan Craven, Kevin Wilson, Gary Latimer, Tim Jackson, Art Cartee, Ron Boswell, and Michael Boswell will serve as pallbearers, and music will be provided by Ruth, Ross, and Russell Lynn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Hills Christian Church.

Mr. Sidney "Doc" Phillips
Mr. Sidney "Doc" Phillips, 70, of Hogansville, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Hospice LaGrange.

Mr. Phillips was born June 2, 1930 in Carroll County to the late George and Jewell Thomas Phillips. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the United States Air Force as a senior master sergeant after 25 years of service. A member of the American Legion and the Air Force Sergeants Association, Mr. Phillips had lived in Hogansville since 1976, where he was a former city councilman and a member and past president of the Hogansville Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Newnan Moose Club and a longtime Boy Scout leader. Mr. Phillips was a retired building contractor and a Baptist. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Alma Phillips.

A funeral will be held Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Danny Wilson and Dr. Jimmy Brown will officiate and burial will be with full military honors in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Aug. 12, from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife, Sara Phillips of Hogansville; daughter and son-in-law Debi and James Thompson of Hogansville; son and daughter-in-law Sidney and Regina Phillips of Mountville; sister and brother-in-law Frances and J.C. Mrs. Mattie Smith Pike, 91, of Hogansville, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Autumn Breeze Convalescent Center in Marietta.

Mrs. Pike was born Oct. 27, 1908 in Alabama to the late George and Kate Gaines Smith. She had lived in Hogansville for 70 years, was retired from Uniroyal, Inc., and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Hogansville.

A funeral will be held today, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Revs. Floyd Brand and Jesse Sims will officiate, and burial will be in the Corinth Cemetery.

Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Margie Purgason of Corinth, Mrs. Elizabeth Gammon of Carrollton, and Mrs. Betty Todd of Hogansville.

Mrs. Martha Fae Hendrix, 63, of Newnan, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Hendrix was a life-long resident of Coweta County, and a member of Morningside Church of God. She retired from Southern Railroad after over 20 years in data processing. She was especially close to her two granddaughters, Angela and Kristi Ragsdale.

A funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe Storey Jr. will officiate, and burial will be at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Raymond. Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Hendrix, Roger Hendrix, Richard Holloway and Joseph Spradlin. The family will receive visitors today, Aug. 13, 2000, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vena Bell Norris Reeves, 93, of Hogansville, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Mrs. Reeves was born April 26, 1907, in Randolph County, Ala. to the late Freeman Wilson Norris and Emma Gene Stevens Norris. She had lived in Hogansville since 1944, and was a member of Highland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Bishop Reeves.

A funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church in Hogansville. Dr. Jimmy Brown will officiate, and burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange. The family will receive visitors this evening, Aug. 13, from 5 to 7 at the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.

Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Reeves Wright of LaGrange and Mrs. Elizabeth Reeves Brummett of Phenix City, Ala.; sisters, Mrs. Flora Norris Pye and Mrs. Verna Will Norris Brown, both of LaGrange; brother, Ralph Norris of LaGrange; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. James Stephens Ross
Mr. James Stephens Ross, 64, of Sharpsburg, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000.

Mr. Ross served as an investigator in the United States Army, and was a city of Atlanta police officer for 11 years. For the past 18 years he had been proprietor of Ross Unlimited, a family owned and operated clothing store in East Atlanta, where he enjoyed continuing to serve the area he had policed years before. Mr. Ross was a former Shriner, and was respected in the community for his political activism and charitable contributions.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. Dr. J. Hoffman Harris will officiate. The family will receive visitors Monday, Aug. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Sylvia Strider Ross; children Jennifer S. Ross, an officer of the Decatur Police Department and James Stephens Ross II who will operate the family business; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Mrs. Ruby Bishop, 55, of Senoia, Ga., died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mrs. Bishop was born April 4, 1945 in Atlanta, Ga.

She was a homemaker.

A funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at graveside in Senoia City Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Frances Perkins, 84, of Newnan, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at Southland Nursing Home in Peachtree City.

Mrs. Perkins was born December 24, 1915 in Carroll County, Ga., to Joseph Daniel Reeves and Mary Jane Wilson. She was a retired homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

A funeral will be held at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 15 with Dr. Melvin Payne officiating.

Surviving are daughters, Nancy Smith of Douglasville, Ga. and Mary Dell Harrell of Newnan; grandchildren, Scott Perkins of Grantville and Stephanie Harrell of Ellenwood; great-granddaughter, Amber Perkins of Newnan.

Mrs. Annie Kate Hines of Ishman Ballard Road, Newnan, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at Atlanta Medical Center.

She was the wife of Mr. William "Bill" Hines and the mother of Mr. Marion Hines. The remains were cremated.

Mr. Nelson R. Willis, 94, of Sharpsburg, died Monday, August 14, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Willis was born December 15, 1905 in Newnan. He worked in the field of farming and agriculture. A veteran of the U. S. armed forces, he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home Wednesday, August 16 from 7-9 p.m.

A funeral will be at McKoon Funeral Home Thursday, August 17 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Raymond Hayes will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sonja Earline Anderson Bailey, 62, of Franklin Ga., died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000.

Mrs. Bailey wa born Nov. 23, 1937 in Carroll County, Ga. to the late Travis Earnest Anderson and Opal Earline White Anderson. She was also preceded in death by her husband James Darnell Bailey. She was a homemaker and an active member of Welcome United Methodist Church in Heard County.

A funeral was Saturday, August 12 at 11 a.m. from the Welcome United Methodist Church with the Reverends Nathaniel Long and Adam Roberts officiating. Pallbearers were Harland Griffith, Garland Griffith, Danny Cothran, Nathan Cothran, Gary Bailey and Dean Bailey. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Anne Breed, 71, of Newnan, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at Fayette Community Hospital.

Mrs. Breed was born November 19, 1928 in Newnan. She was a retired bookkeeper for Newnan Country Club.

A funeral was Tuesday, August 15 at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan with Dr. O. Eugene Tyre officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, Bill Breed of Newnan; daughter, Patty and Michael Caudell of Augusta, Ga.; sisters, Eleanor Bridges of Sharpsburg, Ga., Frances McDowell of Powder Springs, Ga. and Jenella Watson of Montgomery, Ala.; brother, Harvey Witcher of Mentone, California; grandson, Andrew Caudell of Augusta.

Mr. Walter Colton died August 13, 2000 in Philadelphia, Penn.

Mr. James Edward Harris, 67, of Franklin, Ga. died Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at the LaGrange Hospice after several years of declining health.

Mr. Harris was born April 15, 1933 in Troup County, Ga. to the late Buel Coleman Harris and Sarah Mae Andrews Harris. He was a truck driver by profession and a member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Heard County.

A funeral was Friday, August 11 at 2 p.m. at Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with the Reverends Winfred Spruill and Gary Farlow officiaitng. A poem written by Debbie Merrill, daughter of Mr. Harris, was read by Betty Barber; and piano music was provided by Joe Merill, son-in-law of Mr. Harris. Pallbearers were James Harris III, Jonathan Harris, Kevin Scott, Troy Taylor, Timmy Hammil and Jerome Harris. Burial was in Franklin City Cemetery.

Surviving are daughters, Sharon Leonard of Carrollton, Ga. and Debbie Merrill of Centralhatchee, Ga.; sons, Jimmy and Mike Harris, both of Franklin; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

Mr. William "Bill" Murphy, 78, of Luthersville, Ga., died Monday, August 14, 2000 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital.

Mr. Murphy was born July 18, 1922 in Meriwether County, Ga. He was retired as a supervisor for the telephone company. He was a veteran and served in the 35th Field Artillery regiment during World War II. He received the bronze star with oak leaf cluster. He was also a trustee for the Luthersville school, was a deacon of Bethel Baptist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Greenville, Ga.

The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan Thursday, August 17 from 6-9 p.m.

A funeral will be at Bethel Baptist Church Friday, August 18 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Powers Witcher officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gary Whitten, Oliver Gentry III, Rod Moss, Spencer Murphy, Craig Simpson, Richard Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Telephone Company employees and Masonic brothers.

Mrs. Zora Reese, 104, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Newnan, mother of Mrs. Sarah Clements, died August 15, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Zora Wilcoxon Reese of Newnan died August 15, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

Mrs. Reese, thought to have been Newnan's oldest citizen at her passing, was born Sept. 24, 1896 in Carroll County.

A member of Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church, she had served as chairperson of the Communion Stewards, class leader, member of the United Methodist Women and the Mature Adults.

A funeral will be Friday, August 18, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Hulon Kemp will officiate, assisted by other ministers. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Surviving are her oldest daughter, Mrs. Sarah Reese White Clements; grandchildren, Rochelle and Sam Hudson Jr., Edward, Alfred and Clifford Barker, Felton Jr. (Janice), Dwight, Zora (Charles), Paulette and Maurice (Phillis) Ransby; 16 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Felton Ransby Sr. and Samuel Hudson Sr.

A funeral was August 14, 2000 at Thompson-Green Funeral Home in Detroit Michigan. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan.

Mrs. Elizabeth Moss
Mrs. Elizabeth Moss, 87, of Loretta Lane, Luthersville, Ga., died Thursday, August 17, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mrs. Moss was born October 30, 1912. She was a homemaker.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 19, from 7-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan.

A funeral will be Saturday evening at 8 p.m. following visitation. The remains were cremated.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Moss of Luthersville; sons, David Joyner of Dayton, Florida, and Ralph Joyner of Delton, Florida, and Douglas Moss of Atlanta; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. John Andrew "Tommy" Thompson, 85, of East Point, Ga., died Thursday, August 17, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Thompson was born November 23, 1914 in Newnan, Ga. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 19 from 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.

A funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McKoon's. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Surviving are his brother, Aaron D. Thompson of Hogansville, Ga.; and sister, Edna L. Warren of Stone Mountain, Ga.

Mr. Walter Colton
Mr. Walter Colton, 80, of Philadelphia, Penn., died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Philadelphia.

Mr. Colton was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Meriwether County. He was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Luthersville, and served in the United Sates Army.

A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. D.L. Driver officiated, assisted by the Revs. McArthur Colton, John Rosser, and James Parks. Burial was in the church Cemetery, and family friends served as pallbearers.

Surviving are his sisters, Rozella Rosser of Atlanta, Emma Mae Tennie of Newnan, and Dorothy Parks, Fannie Colton, and Ollie Parks, all of Luthersville; brother and sister-in-law Rev. and Mrs. MacArthur Colton of Newnan; adopted son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Russell of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Judge Walker P. Johnson, Jr.
Mr. Walker P. Johnson, Jr., 63, chief judge of the Macon Judicial Circuit, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in the Medical Center of Central Georgia from complications resulting from a reoccurrence of melanoma that had been successfully treated nearly nine years ago.

Judge Johnson was born Feb. 23, 1937, in Newnan. He received his undergraduate degree at Emory University, and his law degree at Emory School of Law. He was a member of Kappa Alpha and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.

Judge Johnson began his career in private practice in Newnan. Before becoming a Superior Court Judge in 1977, Johnson had served as a staff attorney for the civil rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice, assistant U.S. attorney for the middle district, interim U.S. attorney, assistant district attorney for the Macon Circuit, and district attorney. He had been chief judge since 1991. He was reelected five times to the judgeship, and was running unopposed in this year's election. He had also been a member of the law firm of Anderson, Walker, and Reichert

In 1988, Judge Johnson was elected by his peers to be the district administrative judge for the 16 county Third Judicial Administrative District. He served in that capacity until 1994, and served as chairman of the state-wide Committee of District Administrative Judges. A legal scholar of some note, Judge Johnson was a former director of the Mercer University Law School's Prosecutorial Clinic, where he was also an adjunct professor, and he served on numerous court related boards, commissions, and committees. He was also a former member of the Board of Associates at Wesleyan College, and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Arts and Sciences.

Judge Johnson was a veteran of the Georgia National Guard, a former member of the Ingleside Kiwanis Club, and an active member of the Vineville Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the Administrative Board. He was a charter member of the Bootle Inn of Court.

A memorial service will be held at Vineville United Methodist Church on Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at 3 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan on Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Museum of Arts and Sciences, 4182 Forsyth Rd. Macon, 31210, or the Wilson Missions Trust Fund at Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Ave., Macon, 31204.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Gardner Wilson Johnson; son, Walker P. Johnson III of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Gardner Bands Johnson of Atlanta; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Victoria and Paul Logue of Suwanee and Margaret and Bill Boswell of Macon; seven nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and great nephews.

Mr. Billy R. Naylor
Mr. Billy R. Naylor, 67, of Hogansville, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale.

Mr. Naylor was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Etowah County, Ala. to the late Walter and Becky McCormick Naylor. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Naylor lived in Riverdale for more than 30 years before making his home in Hogansville in 1993. He was retired from Owens Illinois Company in Hapeville, and for 21 years was a member and Sunday school teacher at Little Bethel Baptist Church in Fairburn.

A funeral will be held today, Aug. 20, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Johnny Leatherwood will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Surviving are his wife, Mae Elwood Naylor; son, Ray Naylor of Griffin; daughters, Becky Petus and Teresa Adam, both of Moreland; sister, Gladys Fry of Rainbow City, Ala.; brother, Ceil Naylor of East Point, and five grandchildren.
