Scott Hudgens, original Shenandoah partner
Compiled By W. Winston Skinner, Assistant News Editor
Scott Hudgens, one of the developers who created Coweta County's Shenandoah project, died Sunday at his home in Hoschton, Ga.
Hudgens, 77, died of coronary complications.
Hudgens and Herman Russell collaborated on the Shenandoah plan, which was part of the New Communities program backed by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Hudgens was probably best known across the nation as a mall developer. Former Atlanta newscaster and one-time Hudgens business associate Ray Moore said that when Hudgens began his first mall -- North DeKalb -- some of the anchor stores were waffling on participation until he actually began moving dirt.
"That became the first enclosed mall in Georgia. It was his determination and fire and vision which brought that about," Moore said. He subsequently was involved with Greenbriar, Town Center, Gwinnett Place and the Mall of Georgia. Shannon Mall at Union City "was his baby," Moore said.
He also was involved in a variety of other real estate projects. For several years, he owned the historic Dunaway Gardens property in Roscoe in north Coweta County.
Hudgens was also a philanthropist, giving money to the Gwinnett Children's Shelter, the Children's Museum at the Gwinnett Fine Arts Center and the Peachtree Christian Hospice, which opened last week on land Hudgens donated.
In July, he donated 770 acres in western Cherokee County for metro Atlanta's new national veterans cemetery. The Cherokee tract was selected over land in northern Coweta County for the cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Casey Hudgens, three sons, a daughter and five grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
