Mrs. Ruth Coggins, 80, of Newnan, died Thursday, November 16, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Coggins was a retired nursing assistant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Jake Coggins.
Survivng are sons, Richard Coggins of Newnan, Jake Coggins of Stockbridge; daughter, Mrs. Brenda Newman of Newnan; brother, Joseph Steele of Carrollton; sisters, Mrs. Clara Norton and Mrs. Louise Spradlin, both of Carrollton; nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Betty Ann Durrough, 69, of Sargent, Ga. died Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.
Mrs. Durrough was born May 20, 1931 in Coweta County, Ga. She worked as an inspector.
The family received friends Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan.
A funeral was Thursday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Dwight L. Moody and the Rev. Floyd Durrough officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Willie Mae Gamble, James Lane, Whitesburg, Ga. died Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
A funeral will be Saturday, Nov. 18 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with remains placed in state at 11 a.m. The Rev. Lewis Askew will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Edward Dunson, the Rev. Milledge Mitchell, the Rev. Tommy Harris, and the Rev. Brooklyn Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons; flower ladies, granddaughters and community members.
Mrs. Gamble was born in Carroll County, Ga. Nov. 24, 1918 to the late Annie Mae Brown. She joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at an early age, serving as a loving, faithful and devoted member until her death. She served the church and the community in multiple functions: the church choir, Sunday school, usher board, ladies auxiliary, concert choir, community choir, the home demonstration club, senior citizen organization of Whiteburg and The Georgia Power Ambassadors group for retirees. Mrs. Gamble retired from Coweta General Hospital in 1982 after 19 years of service. On April 24, 1938 Willie Mae and Grady Gamble were married, and they had 10 children. Two daughters, Mercedes and Opal, and her husband preceded her in death.
Survivng are two daughters and six sons: Mable (Lincoln) Byrd, Carrollton, Ga., Lynn (Wallace) Mininfield, Whitesburg, Ga., Grady (Margaret) Gamble, Stone Mountain, Eugene (Eloise) Gamble, Ellenwood,, Ga., James (Linda) Gamble, Robert (Lucy) Gamble, Richard (Margie) Gamble, Ellis (Nancy) Gamble, all of Whtesburg, Ga. She had 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Lee (Callie Pearl) Brown of Whitesburg, Ga., Junior (Lucille) Brown of Carrollton; one brother-in-law, William Gamble Sr. of Whitesburg, Ga.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Rev. Willie Joe Loftin, 81, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at his home in Newnan.

He was a veteran of World War II, stationed in Camp Blanding, Florida, during 1945 and 1946. He started serving as a pastor at McIntosh Baptist (a mission church of Mills Chapel Baptist Church). Following this time he served Enon Grove Baptist Church in Heard County for four years. He then served New Hope Baptist and East Newnan Baptist, jointly, for 14 years. In June of 1965, he was called for full-time pastorate of East Newnan Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his retirement in 1985.

Mrs. Carrie Penrose Holloway, 92, of Jonesboro, died November 15, 2000.
Mrs. Holloway was born July 6, 1908 and was the widow of the late Herman Holloway Sr. She was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and held all stations and was Worthy Matron.

Justin David Beall, 17, of Hogansville died Friday, November 17, 2000.
Justin was born March 12, 1983 in Atlanta son of David and Denise Beall. He was a member of the senior class at Callaway High School in Hogansville and attended Antioch Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 20 at Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. Reverend Wesley Boatman will officiate. The burial will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Commander Edward Storey Buchanan, (USN retired) , 82, died Friday, November 17, 2000 at the Newnan Hospital.
Buchanan was born December 6, 1917 in Newnan son of Hugh and Helen Carpenter Buchanan.
Buchanan a graduate of Newnan High School received his degree in chemical engineering from Auburn University in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. Buchanan was in the South Pacific during World War II and was a range safety officer for the Pacific Missile Test Range, in Pt. Mugu, California until his retirement. Upon returning to Newnan, Buchanan was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a member of the Newnan Kiwanis Club.
The funeral service will be Monday, November 20, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Dr. Joel E. Richardson will officiate. The burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Buchanan's memory to the Central Baptist Church o Newnan.

Mrs. Marrs was born October 16, 1919 daughter of John Homer and Lucy Beatrice Pierce Huckeba.
Mrs. Marrs and her family returned to Heard County after her husband retired from the military. She attended Caney Head Methodist Church.
Funeral services were Friday, November 17, 2000. Reverend Junior Teal and Chaplain Major David Giammona officiated. The burial followed at the Post Cemetery in Fort Benning, Ga.

Commander Edward Storey Buchanan, USN (retired), died Friday, November 17, 2000 at Newnan Hospital following a lengthy illness.
The son of Hugh and Helen Carpenter Buchanan, he was born in Newnan, Ga. Dec. 6, 1917. A graduate of Newnan High School, Cdr. Buchanan received his degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University, Class of 1940. While a student at Auburn, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.
Cdr. Buchanan entered the United States Navy in 1941. Upon completion of flight training, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a Range Safety Officer for the Pacific Missile Test Range, Ft. Mugu, California until his retirement after 23 years of Naval service. Following his Navy service, Cdr. Buchanan was associated with North American Rockwell in the Manned Space Flight Program. Upon returning to Newnan, Cdr. Buchanan was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a former member of the Newnan Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Johnson Buchanan; daughters, Pamela Buchanan Kent and her husband, Michael I. Kent of Auburn, Alabama and Elizabeth Buchanan Rogers and her husband Jonathn P. Rogers Jr. of Midlothian, Virginia; three grnadchildren, Elizabeth Kent Weatherly and her husband David B. Mr. Woodfin K. Hulme, 84, of Newnan, died Monday, November 20, 2000 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.
Mr. Hulme was born August 13, 1916 in Elbert County, Ga. He served in the South Pacific during World WarII where he obtained the rank of major. Mr. Hulme retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel in the United States Army Reserves. He later retired from the Civil Service.

Mr. James Calvin Massengale, 61, of Hogansville, Ga., died Monday, November 20, 2000.

Mr. Massengale was born October 24, 1939 in Meriwether County, son of the late James Luther Massengale and the late Marion Massey Massengale. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, lived in Hogansville and Grantville most of his life, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grantville. He was adjutant of the Hogansville American Legion Post and was the owner and operator of C C and C Convenience Store in Hogansville.
Surviving are wife, Mrs. Jo Ann Massengale of Hogansville; son, Cal Massengale of Newnan; sister, Miss Betty Ann Massengale of Atlanta; brother, George Massengale of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jon Cal Massengale and Jessika Massengale of Newnan.

Mr. Bobby Gene Purgason, 62, of Roopville, Ga., died Monday, November 20, 2000 at the Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
Mr. Purgason was born in Heard County, Ga., January 29, 1938, to the late Nora Lee Adams Purgason, and Marion Charles Purgason. Before his retirement he was a hanger for the D&L Automotive Company in Carrollton, Ga. He was a faithful member of the Harvest Time Holiness Church in Whitesburg, Ga. He was a devoted husband and father, and enjoyed working in the garden and seeing things grow. People were Mr. Bobby's joy. He never met a stranger.
A funeral will be Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home with the Reverends J. W. Daniels, and Daryle Golden officiating. Burial will be in the Ephesus Cemetery in Ephesus, Ga.

Mr. Maurice M. Sponcler Sr., 87, of Regency Park, Dalton, Ga. died November 21, 2000.
Mr. Sponcler was a lifelong resident of Newnan, Ga., having moved to Dalton in 1997.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan with Dr. Joel E. Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Sponcler was born July 11, 1913, in Newnan, son of George Maurice and Ruth Moncrief Arnall Sponcler and was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Moore Sponcler. He was a graduate of Newnan High School and attended Georgia Tech where he graduaged in 1934 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the United States ARmy in World War II.
For more than 30 years Mr. Sponcler was an executive with Arnall and Arnco Mills. He was chief executive officer for the two years before the mills were sold to Bibb Manufacturing Company, and he worked for five years as Assistant Director of Operations before his retirement.
An active member of his community, Mr. Sponcler served on the Newnan Board of Education for many years, was a member of the Newnan Rotary Club for 10 years and was associated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. Being a devoted member of Central Baptist Church of Newnan, he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Sponcler is survived by his daughter, Schy Funderburk and her husband Blair of Snellville, Ga. and a son, Maurice Sponcler Jr. and his wife Betty of Dalton, Ga.; grandchildren, Rob Funderburk of Charlotte, N.C., Katie Funderburk of Birmingham, Ala., Dr. Lisa Sponcler Norman of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Dori Sponcler of Atlanta; sisters, Mrs.Katie Hollis and Mrs. Lucy Colvin of Newnan; seven nieces.

Mr. Murrah was a deacon and choir member at New Friendship Baptist Church in Greenville. He retired from the William L. Bonnell Company after 25 years. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lucille Stokes, Magdlene Clark, Charlie Murrah, Jr., Winston Murrah, and Mack Murrah.

Mrs. Allen was born Oct. 25, 1914 in Palmetto, daughter of the late William Bland Nixon Sr. and Minnie Mae Edge Nixon. She was a homemaker and a retired bank teller.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Moreland United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Lester Eugene Allen.
A funeral will be held today, Nov., 25, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Moreland United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Whetstone and Rev. Richard Huycke officating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Surviving are her sister, Sara Windham; and sisters-in-law, Mary Nixon and Clyda Nixon. Memorial contributions may be made to the organ fund of Moreland United Methodist Church.

Linnie A. Durrough, 77, of Robinson Road, Newnan died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000 at LaGrange Hospice.
Mr. Durrough was born Feb. 23, 1923 in Carroll County. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from the Bibb Company.
A funeral will be held Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Sargent Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Durrough officiating. Interment will follow at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Irene Mooney, 79, of Newnan died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000 at Tanner Memorial Medical Center in Carrollton.
Mrs. Mooney was born Nov. 25, 1920 in Heard County. She retired as a nurse from Newnan Hospital.
A funeral will be held today, Nov. 25, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Norton officiating. Interment will follow at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery at Welcome.

?Mr. Wilbon Clay II died Saturday, November 25, 2000 at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta, Ga.,
?Clay was born November 2, 1924, son of Willie Glen and Georgia A. Hill Clay. He received his B.A. in Industrial Science from North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro, N.C. Clay was a Boy Scout Leader in his community. He was a lifetime member of the Greater Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Newnan. Clay was the first elected black County Commissioner in Coweta County. A one time he served as chairman of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners. Clay served in the U.S. Navy between 1944 and 1946. He worked as a Lab Technician for the Southwire Company in Carollton, Ga. before his retirement.
?The funeral service will be on Monday, November 27, 2000 at noon at The Greater Mount Zion A.M.E. Church. Reverend James Alexander will officiate. The burial will follow at the Westview Cemetery.

Mr. Roy Lee Chatham, 58, of Newnan, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Newnan Hospital.
Mr. Chatham was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Troup, Georgia. He worked as a utilities locator for over 25 years at Newnan Utilities. Mr. Chatham enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sportsman.
A funeral will be held today, Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. The Rev. David Arrington will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Mr. Tom Garner Sr., 79, of Old Chipley Road, Pine Mountain, Ga., died Saturday, November 25, 2000 at his home.
Mr. Garner was born July 22, 1921 in Newnan, son of the late John Alfred and Mattie Joe McGhee Garner. He was a farmer and had lived in Pine Mountain most of his life. He was a member of Chipley Lodge #40 Free and Accepted Masons.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at graveside in the Garner Family Cemetery in Pine Mountain. The Rev. Sid Shelnutt will officiate.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Garner, Pine Mountain, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and James Hackle of LaGrange, Ga. and Jo and Jack Steele of Pine Mountain; four sons, Thomas S. Garner Jr., John Garner, Greg Garner and Peter Garner, all of Pine Mountain; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruby Jeanette Forbus Heard
Mrs. Ruby Jeanette Forbus Heard, 80, of Franklin, Ga., died at her home Tuesday, November 21, 2000 after many years of ill health.
Mrs. Heard was born August 31, 1920 in Hogansville, Ga., to the late James Manley Forbus and Margaret Jeanette McClain Forbus. She was also preceded in death by her husband John L. Heard. Mrs. Heard served the children of Heard County first as a teacher at the Franklin Elementary School, and after several years of teaching felt she could be more useful as a case worker with the Heard County Department of Family and Children Services. Her devotion to the children of Heard County will long be remembered by those she served.
In addition to her work, Mrs. Heard was an active member of the Franklin United Methodist Church and a beloved wife and mother.
A funeral was Friday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at Franklin United Methodist Church with the Reverends Marion Shivers, Rick McMahan and Terry Harper officiating. Music was provided by Nancy Heard and Megan Heard, granddaughter of Mrs. Heard. Pallbearers were Talmadge Davis, Don Heard, Raymond Heard, Lance Taylor, Bob Kroch, Joel Phillips, Jerry Ridley and Mason Alford. Burial was in Franklin City Cemetery.

Miss Opal Huddleston
Miss Opal Huddleston, 83, of Franklin, Ga., died Monday, November 20, 2000 at her home after several years of declining health.
Miss Huddleston was born in Randolph County, Alabama Jan. 5, 1917 to the late Joel David Huddleston and Martha Francis Moore Huddleston. She remained with her parents and cared for them until their death. She was a much loved sister and aunt, and was a faithful member of the Sardis Baptist Church in Ephesus, Ga.
A funeral was Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home in Franklin, Ga. with the Rev. Jimmy Palmer officiating. Music was provided by Barbara Nelms. Serving as pallbearers were Rickey Huddleston, Kenneth Ray Hudd, Thomas Hudd, Vance Cline, Tony Huddleston, Barry Huddleston and Marty Srader. Burial was in the Sardis Church Cemetery.
Surviving are sister, Marie Huddleston Kent of Bowdon, Ga.; brothers, Lloyd M. Mr. Ralph Smith, uncle of Carl E. Smith of Turin, Ga., died Monday, November 27, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.
Mr. Smith was an excellent tomato farmer and sold tomatoes at Ramond Lake on Georgia Highway 16 East for a number of years.

Mr. Harvey "Smokey" Walthall
Mr. Harvey "Smokey" Walthall, 94, of Newnan, died Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at Lafayette Nursing & Rahab.
Mr. Walthall was born in Coweta County, Ga. February 26, 1906. He was bookkeeper for the former Johnson Hardware in Newnan for 29 years and one month. A United States veteran, he served in Army 491 Quartermaster corp in World War II in the South Pacific. He was a longtime member of the Newnan Civitan Club and attended Newnan Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 1 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
