Mrs. Lucille Turner
Mrs. Susan Lucille Turner, November 8, 1925 to April 21, 2003, was a native of Burke County and a longtime resident of Effingham County. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 24, at 4 p.m. at Rincon Baptist Temple, with the Revs. Roger Browher and Bill Boyd officiating. Interment was in Effingham Memorial Garden.
Mrs. Turner was a member of Rincon Baptist Temple, a homemaker and an avid fisherman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin (Pete) Lovins Turner and a daughter, Deborah Yvonne Turner. Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Harvey and husband Wayne Harvey of Rincon; a granddaughter, Nicole Rahn and husband Jason Rahn of Springfield; a grandson, Michael Harvey and wife Lorrie Harvey of Jesup; four great-granddaughters, McKenzie Rahn, Michaela Rahn, MaryGrace Rahn, all of Springfield and Shelby Surrency of Jesup; a sister, Elizabeth Lubar of Sardis; nieces, nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Troy Beasley, Ronnie Beasley, Truman Gordy, Gary Hendrix, Billy Wilson, Chris Hucks, Jimmy Morris and James Dasher. Thomas C. Mr. Jason Chavous, 30, of Montgomery, Ala., entered into rest Sunday, April 27, 2003, at his residence. Memorial services will be held today (April 30), at 2 p.m. at Montgomery Memorial Chapel. Mr. Chavous, a native of Burke County, moved to Montgomery 10 years ago. He was a 1991 graduate of Burke County High School.

Mrs. Mildred Boland
Mrs. Mildred Urquahart Boland, 86, wife of the late Raymond B. Boland, entered into rest Sunday, May 4, 2003, at University Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, in the chapel of Rowland Funeral Home with the Revs. Paul Limato Jr. and Clayton Galloway officiating. Interment was a Pineview Memorial Gardens. A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at McBean Baptist Church. Mrs. Boland was born in Brooksville, Fla. and had lived in North Augusta, S.C., for 45 years before moving to Waynesboro five years ago. She was formerly a member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta, Sheffield Club and the Glady Jones Sunday School Class. Mrs. Boland was a member of McBean Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Donnie Rae Limato and Jo Ann Yarrington; and a foster son, Tommy Lowe. Survivors include three sons, Allen Boland of Waynesboro, Ret. Col. Thomas Boland of Florence, S.C. and the Rev. Bill Boland of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Jeanne (Becky) Calderone of Sarasota, Fla.; four sisters, Eva Powell of Columbus, Bessie Hicks of Callahan, Fla., Margie Wilson of North Augusta and Viola Boland of Prince Frederick, Md.; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were the deacons of McBean Baptist Church.
The family received friends at Rowland Funeral Home on Monday, May 5, from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Thomas Bessent
Mr. Thomas Edison Bessent, 89, of Augusta died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at University Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Portersville Missionary Baptist Church, with the Revs. William M. Bessent and F.F. Cook Jr. officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery. Mr. Bessent was a native of Burke County. He retired from General Motors Corporation and was a member of Portersville Missionary Baptist Church and Broadway Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Elora C. Bessent of Augusta; a son, Alvin E. Bessent of New York, N.Y.; four daughters, Wilhelmena Hines of Southfield, Mich., Thomasina Ellis of Rochester Hills, Mich., Lorene Phillips of Pontiac, Mich. and Catherine Graves of Augusta; a brother, William E. Bessent of Gough; two sisters, Theodoshia Jones of Waynes-boro and Hattie Carpenter of Atlanta; and 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Johnny Hines, Vernon Ellis, Charles Graves, Clarence Phillips, Stephen Ellis and Kaino Phillips. Honorary pallbearers were Damani Phillips, Derek Hines and Thomas Burris.
Mrs. Sadie Jenkins
Mrs. Sadie Ward Jenkins, 81, entered into rest Tuesday, May 5, 2003, at Burke Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Alexander, with the Revs. Matt Shryock and Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Mrs. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Burke County. She worked as an Avon representative for over 30 years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School and was also active in the Training Union as well as a member of the WMU. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her husband, Mallory L. Jenkins, in 1973 and a grandson, Jerry H. Jenkins Jr., in 1997. Survivors include four sons, Jimmy Jenkins of Shellman Bluff, Johnny M. Jenkins, Gene Jenkins and Jerry Jenkins, all of Waynesboro; one daughter, Cathy Jenkins Baxley of Waynesboro; and 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Gene Jenkins Jr., Chad Jenkins, Brad Jenkins, Steve Jenkins, Kip Jenkins, Jay Jenkins and Brett Baxley. Mr. Richard Pettigrew
Mr. Richard Pettigrew entered into rest Friday, May 2, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 5, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Home. Burial was in Brothersville Cemetery in Hephzibah.
Mr. Pettigrew was a native of Pauls Valley, Okla., but had lived in the Hephzibah area for the last 40 years. He retired from Gracewood State School and Hospital as the supervisor of the X-ray department after 30 years service. He was a member of the National Society of Radiological Technologist, Hephzibah United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a loving husband, daddy and granddaddy.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Rhodes Pettigrew of Hephzibah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard II and Dana Pettigrew and D. Keith and Sabrina Pettigrew, all of Hephzibah; six grandchildren, Baylee Vivian Pettigrew, Henslee Kay Pettigrew, Shelby Lynn Pettigrew, Megan Kay Pettigrew, Kaylyn A. Pettigrew and Lathan Pettigrew, all of Hephzibah; dear friends, Betty and Gene Giles and children, Greg and Alicia of Blakely; four sisters, Vivian P. Sullivan of Martinez, Ruth P. Mrs. Rosa D. Hunter
Mrs. Rosa Dove Hunter of 841 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Waynesboro, entered into rest Monday, May 5, 2003, at Burke Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. A.L. Brown officiating. Interment was at Pines Cemetery. Mrs. Hunter was a native of Ellerbe, N.C. and graduated from Fayetteville State University. She taught school in the Burke County Public School System for 37 years and was a Sunday School teacher, member of the senior choir and missionary society and church secretary. After retiring, she was active in the Retired Teachers Association and the Adult Literacy Program at her church.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Hunter; a daughter, Kimberly Hunter of Evans; a son, Bennie Dove of Ellerbe; a sister Mrs. Annie (Rev. George) Buie of Ellerbe; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.Pallbearers were members of the Retired Teachers Association of Burke County. Honorary pallbearers were officers of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Mrs. Amanda Bolton
Mrs. Amanda Glenn Bolton entered into rest Friday, May 16, 2003, at Burke Medical Center. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro with Dr. David Carter and Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Bolton, a native of Troup County, was born August 25, 1903. She received her B.S. Degree in Mathematics from LaGrange College in 1925 and her M.S. Degree in Mathematics from the University of Georgia in 1928. She came to Waynesboro in 1928 and taught in the Burke County Junior College until 1932, when she began teaching at Waynesboro High School, retiring in 1964. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro where she taught the McFerrin Bible Class and had served as secretary of the administrative board. Mrs. Blount was preceded in death by her husband, John Lee Bolton, in 1990. Survivors include three sons, John Lee Bolton Jr. of Sanford, N.C., Robert G. Bolton of Waynesboro and Dr. William S. Bolton of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Robert Bolton Jr., David Bolton, Neal Bolton, Gregory Bolton, Julia Bolton and Mary Ann Bradley; and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Joe Cooley, Herbert Mobley, Luther Robinson, Bill Hargrove, Jimmy Herrington, Tommy Quick, George DeLoach and Lon Hankinson. Nell Baker Mason
Nell Baker Duke Mason, 88, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Brentwood Terrace Health Center, where she was a resident for 11 years. Graveside services were Sunday, May 18, at Westview Cemetery in Augusta. The Rev. Eddie Taylor Jr., great-great nephew of the deceased officiated. Mrs. Mason lived most of her adult life in Augusta and Norfolk, Va. She was a member of the Westbury Methodist Church, Norfolk, Va., and a retired beautician, bookkeeper and taxi driver. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Baker of Augusta; a niece, Mary Kelly and great niece, Bonnie Taylor, both of Waynesboro; and two nephews, James L. Baker and Neal W. Baker of Augusta. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Kelly of Greenville, S.C., Eddie Taylor of Waynesboro, and James L. Baker, Neal W. Barker, Richard D. Kelly, Bobby Kelly, all of Augusta, and Don Sheffield of Martinez.
Mr. Roger Flakes
Mr. Roger “Ray” Flakes, 76, entered into rest Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Tony Key and Jerry Rockefeller officiating. Interment followed at Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery in Girard.
Mr. Flakes was a retired truck driver, Baptist by faith and lived for 20 years in Prattville, Ala. He is preceded in death by his parents, Estel Flakes and Ruth Flakes McClain, also a sister, Becky Purvis and a brother, Jake McClain. Survivors include two sons, Roger F. Flakes and Johnny A. Flakes, both of Prattville, Ala.; two daughters, Sybil Brown of Dearing, Darlene Godwin of Ark.; two sisters, Ellen Tapley of Alexander and Annie Ruth Mack of Missouri; three brothers, W.Z. McClain of Alexander, Howard McClain of Waynes-boro and Charles Elton Flakes of Springfield; a stepson, Larry Chavous; and 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Danny Flakes, Allen Smith, Frank Flakes, David Tapley, Randy Tapley and Pete McClain.

Mrs. Ruby Royal
Mrs. Ruby Alice Royal, 76, entered into rest Friday, May 16, 2003, at Athena Rehab of Clayton, Lake City, Ga. Funeral services were held Monday, May 19, at 2 p.m., at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gene Breed officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Royal was born in Burke County, but had resided in Clayton County for the past 40 years. She was the daughter of the late Frank Royal and Alice Tobias Royal. She had retired as a newspaper reporter having worked for The True Citizen, The Augusta Chronicle and The News Daily of Jonesboro. She also served Clayton County, Georgia as a justice of the peace for many years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and had volunteered faithfully for the March of Dimes. She was Baptist by faith and attended Grace Baptist Church in Jonesboro.
Survivors include a son, Bobby (Brenda) Quick of Riverdale; a daughter, Linda (Tim) Knier of Decatur; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Betty E. Blount
Mrs. Betty Eskew Blount, 69, of Briar Creek Estates, entered into rest Monday, May 19, 2003, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at Botsford Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment followed at Botsford Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Blount was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Waynesboro for the past 30 years. She was a member of Botsford Baptist Church. Mrs. Blount worked for 18 years at Seminole Mills in Clearwater, S.C. and she was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, George E. Blount. Survivors include two sons, Marion “Bubba” Boatright and Charles “Ray” Tanner, both of Waynesboro; three daughters, Tammy Boatright and Shirley Ann James, both of Waynesboro and Cynthia “Diane” Landers of Mississippi; five sisters, Shirley Brown of Wadley, Patricia Williford and Raydene Posey, both of Waynesboro, Sara Eskew of Hephzibah and Darlene Williams of Oak Park; two brothers, Richard Eskew of Harlem and Michael Eskew of Augusta; and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bobby Posey, Mike DeLaigle, Lonnie Baxley, Jimmy Posey, Greg Hawkins and Bill Lively.
