Mrs. Flora Mae Purvis
Mrs. Flora Mae Purvis, 89, of Adel, Ga., died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Purvis was born August 17, 1911, in Cook County, where she lived most of her life. She was a member of the Adel United Methodist Church, and the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, and was an honorary member of the Sunshine Circle. A graduate of Young Harris College, Mrs. Purvis taught in the Cook County School System for many years, and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Purvis, and her parents, William Moncrief and Angie Whitehurst Evarts. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Pauline Evarts and Mildred Best and brothers Albert and Harry Evarts.
A funeral will be held Monday, June 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Adel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Adel. The remains will lie in state the hour prior to the service.
Surviving are her son, Dwight Purvis and his wife, Linda, of Lakeworth, Fla., her daughter, Sue Livingston of Newnan; grandson Stan Livingston; and great grandchildren Rebecca Cecile Livingston and Caroline Mae Livingston.

Mr. Alfred Floyd Cranford, 70, of White Oak Drive, died Friday, June 15, 2001 at Portsbridge Hospice.
Born June 17, 1930 in Nashville, Tenn., Mr. Cranford was a retired truck driver.
Visitation will be Monday, June 18 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. Service will begin at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home with burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Robert McCurry will officiate.

Mr. John Westley (J.W.) Bridges Jr., 77, of Newnan died June 12, 2001.
Mr. Bridges was born to John Westley Bridges Sr. and Idella Strickland on August 18, 1923. He was the third grandson of Deacon Bud and Gussie Strickland, who raised him. He joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at an early age under the Rev. Bill Smith. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army and served his country.
A funeral will be Saturday, June 16 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Moreland. The Rev. Roger Hill will officiate, assisted by Minister Kendall, Minister Ray Anthony and other ministers. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cousins will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Annie Cloteal Brittain, 93, of St. Clair, Newnan, died Friday, June 15, 2001 at Franklin Healthcare.
Mrs. Brittain was born February 14, 1908 in Douglas County, Ga. She retired as a nurse's aid from Newnan Hospital and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, James William and Willie Florence Aderhold Brown and her husband James W. Brittain.

Mrs. Pat Windom Davis, 53, of Grantville, Ga., died Thursday, June 14, 2001 at Decatur Hospital.

Mrs. Davis was born January 2, 1948 in Newnan and was a lifelong resident of Grantville. She was a 1966 graduate of Hogansville High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grantville, where she served many years as treasurer and church secretary. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lulu Cranston Windom.

Mrs. Wood was born July 5, 1942 in Cairo, Ga., to the late Eural Thomas Sparks and Candace Sparks. She was an American Contract Bridge League certified director, star teacher and on the board of directors for the Charlotte Bridge Association. She was also a Sliver Life Master of Bridge. Mrs. Wood loved cooking, reading and she loved to sing. She will be deeply missed by all.
Surviving are her husband, Mr. Eldrid G. "Woody" Wood of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughters, Leigh Wood of Carrollton, Ga., and Jodi Reaves Wood Brinzey and husband Peter of Concord, N.C.; mother, Candace Sparks of Cairo, Ga.

Mr. Curtis Arnold, 56, of Walton Road, Newnan, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at his residence.
A funeral will be Saturday, June 16 at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Sharpsburg, Ga. The Rev. Crawford Smith, pastor, and Rev. Rufus Smith Sr. will officiate, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Davis, Rev. Billy B. Avery and Bro. John Keith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Flower ladies will be nieces. The cortege will assemble at 1017 Walton Road at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
Mr. Arnold was born January 1, 1945 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Seaborn Arnold. He married Ada Mae Stewart and they had four children.
He received his GED at the Adult Education Center in Newnan. He worked as a carpenter until he became disabled. He loved working with his hands, telling stories to whoever would listen. Everyone who listened came away with a smile, and he never met a stranger.
Mr. Arnold joined Ebenezer Baptist Church at an early age and worked faithfully as lead singer for the choir. He later moved to Chattanooga, Tenn. He became a member of the Alton Park Church of Christ. He then moved back to Newnan where he attended Westside Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lamar Arnold.
Surviving are his wife, Ada M. Arnold; four children, Angela L. Barner, Curtis Arnold Jr. (Betty), Mark Arnold and Trina Arnold; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Louise Darden, L. M. Mrs. Flora B. Wilks Hill, 74, of Newnan, died June 11, 2001.
Mrs. Hill was born March 27, 1927 in the Arnco community of western Coweta County. She received her early education at the Smith Chapel School and later graduated from Howard Warner High School and furthered her education in the field of cosmetology and served as a cosmetologist for more than 50 years.
She joined and served the Smith Chapel United Methodist Church at a very early age where she served faithfully in various capacities. She served as a class leader, organized the first youth bell choir, and was a faithful member of the United Methodist Women's Association. She later married Mr. H. C. Hill.
A funeral will be Friday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at Smith Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. C. Neal officiating, assisted by other ministers. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be United Methodist men.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Theodus Wilks and Mr. Frank Wilks.

Mr. Stone was born November 15, 1941 in LaGrange, son of the late Joseph O. Stone and the late Willie Mae Crowell Stone. A former resident of Hogansville, he was a veteran of service in the U.S. Air Force and had lived in the Atlanta area for the past 37 years. He was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Hogansville and was a retired tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Arnold was the first born child to Peniston and Willene Arnold. He was born July 4, 1982, nicknamed "Micki." He was very active in sports and when it came to people he never met a stranger, he always had a smile on his face.
He received Christ at an early age, and later joined First Newnan Seventh Day Adventist Church. He attended Newnan High School and was most recently attending West Central Technical College.
Surviving are his mother, Willene; father, Peniston; sister, Amber Pekela; brothers, Eric and Ken; grandmother, Ms. Myrtice C. Mrs. Mildred Runnion Lewis, 76, died Saturday, June 9, 2001 at her daughter Carey's home in Peachtree City from complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Born in Mars Hill, North Carolina March 25, 1925, Mrs. Lewis was the daughter of Nathan and Thelma Runnion of Greenville, SC. She was a world-respected leader in fashion and modeling, one of South Carolina's foremost businesswomen. Mrs. Lewis has been a member of the New York Fashion Group, American Women in Radio and TV, has been published in Personalities of the South and Who's Who in Women of the World, and hosted three radio shows. The South's most famous model maker was selected as the 1991 inductee to the International Models Hall of Fame. Mrs. Lewis opened four award-winning modeling and finishing schools in Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, SC, and Savannah, GA. For more than 40 years she devoted herself to helping others make the most of themselves, and gave tirelessly to charity and civic events. She was renowned not only for her beauty, but also for her honesty and character.
Surviving are her brother, Jack Runnion of Greenville, SC; and her children, John Lewis, Bob Lewis, Carey Lewis Arban; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Willie C. Ingram
Mr. Willie C. Ingram, 57, of Newnan, Ga. died Thursday, June 7, 2001.
Mr. Ingram was a father, friend and retiree. He was born May 5, 1944 to the late Mr. and Mrs. John (Ida Prather) Ingram in Coweta County, Ga. He was best known as "Willie C." He was one of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Ingram, seven of whom preceded him in death.
Mr. Ingram was educated in the public school system of Coweta County, graduating in 1962 from Central High School. While at Central High, he was voted "Mr. Esquire" by his fellow classmates. During his high school years, he worked as a part-time employee for Newnan Hospital. Upon graduation, he became a full-time employee of James River (formerly American Can Company). After leaving James Rivers, he became an employee of Newnan Hospital for numerous years. He retired from Newnan Hospital. He was loved and respected by all who knew and loved him.
A funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 at Smith Chapel United Methodist Church. Rev. J. C. Neal officiated, assisted by Rev. Joe P. Geter and other ministers. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bradford Hill, Calvin Hill, Joe James, Eddie Leslie, R. C. McGinty, Willie Morris, John L. Williams and Leon Woods.

Mr. Ralph W. Palmer, 79, of Peachtree City, Ga., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at his home.
Mr. Palmer was born September 18, 1921 in Troy, New York. His home was in Lake Como, Florida until service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a corporate pilot for 17 years with Natural Gas Pipeline Company, followed by a 20-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration in the General Aviation Division. He and his wife of 55 years, Mary Louise, have lived in Peachtree City for the past seven years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Sherrill P. Siligar, Peachtree City; son, Stephen S. Palmer, Mt. Shasta, CA; sister, Jo Meyer, San Mateo, CA; grandchildren Scott and Kellie Siligar, Peachtree City; cousin, Gladys Axelrod, Valencia, CA.
A funeral will be held at a later date in Lake Como, Florida.

Mr. James Monroe Booth, 61, of Franklin, Ga., died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at his residence after several months of declining heatlh.
Mr. Booth was born March 15, 1940, in Jefferson County, Alabama to the late John Robert booth and Evelyn Lacey Booth. Until the onset of his illness he was a press operator for Franklin Aluminum Company. He was a Protestant by faith.
A funeral will be Tuesday, June 12 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home in Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. John L. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Red Oak Cemetery in Heard County.

Mr. Ragnar "Rags" Louis Freeburg Jr.
Mr. Ragnar "Rags" Louis Freeburg Jr. , 85, of Newnan died Sunday, June 10, 2001.
Mr. Freeburg was born May 24, 1916, in Duesquesne, PA. He was the son of Ragnar and Jennie Freeburg who were Swedish immigrants. He obtained a B.S. in engineering degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1938. He was in the U.S. Army, serving in N. Africa, Italy and Northern Ireland in World War II. He retired as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He began working at Carnegie Illinois Steel Company in Duesquesne, PA. In 1950 he joined the Marathon Corporation in Wisconsin and in 1958 moved to Newnan and served as plant manager of Marathon Corporation. In 1972 he transferred with Marathon and retired from American Can located in Newnan in 1978.
Mr. Freeburg is survivied by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis (Shafer) Freeburg of Newnan; sons, Eric W. Freeburg of Chester, IL, Ragnar "Bud" Freeburg and wife Becky of Newnan, and Philip Freeburg and wife Ann of Wassau, WI; grandchildren, Brian, Mary, Joanna, Jennie, Rachel, Anna and David.
Mr. Freeburg was a member of Newnan Presbyterian Church serving as deacon and elder, a director of Newnan Citizens and Southern Bank and was a member of Newnan Rotary Club. During his lifetime he dedicated himself to service to American Can, his family and always enjoyed his grandchildren and his pipe. In later years he followed the progress of his great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Wednesday, June 13 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Eldridge "Buddy" Hubbard, 74, of Hominy Creek Road, Carrollton, died suddenly Saturday, June 9, 2001, at his residence.
He was born May 6, 1927 in Coweta County, Ga., the son of the late Mr. Luther Leonard Hubbard and the late Mrs. Maynelle Wallace Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard was a member of the Midway Macedonia Baptist Church in Sand Hill where he had been a member for more than 40 years. He was owner of the Hubbard Trucking Company. He was also a member of the Sand Hill Masonic Lodge #350 F.&A.M. and a veteran having served in the United States Army. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Daniel Hubbard on February 5, 1973; and one sister, Lunnell Boswell.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Mildred Gilley Hubbard, to whom he was married March 5, 1949, of Carrollton; two sisters, Mary Ruth Cash of Coweta County and Evelyn Wright of Newnan and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Donald G. Fast
Mr. Donald George Fast, 68, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Fast was born May 1, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Elmer and Florence Fast. Fast moved 12 times during his 37 year careen with Marathon Corp., which became American Can and James River. His last move took him to Newnan. After a one month retirement, he went to work for Rock-Tenn in Tennessee. He retired again in 1996 and moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
A veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Fast enjoyed traveling in his R.V., fishing, hunting, and barbershop singing. He was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Lake Havasu City. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert.

Mrs. Peggy B. Wheelus, 51, of Hogansville, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Newnan Hospital.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 11, in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Reverends Randall Hodge and Lonnie Bennett will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday night.

Mrs. Wheelus was born February 11, 1950 in Troup County. She is the daughter of the late Frank and Orene Byrd Brown. She was a lifelong resident of Hogansville and was a member of the Hogansville Church of God.
Survivors include four sons and two daughter-in-laws, Chris and Tonya Wheelus, Time Wheelus, Chad and Lisa Wheelus andSteve Wheelus; a sister, Sara Anne Burden; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Carol Brown; three grandchildren, Christen Wheelus, Carmen Wheelus and Brandon Wheelus; and special friends, Billy and Joyce Riley.

Ms. Frances Mary Daniel, 91, of Senoia, Ga., died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at her residence.
Ms. Daniel was born May 11, 1910 in Greenville, South Carolina. She worked as a bookkeeper.

Mr. Bonnie L. Ogletree
A funeral for Mr. Bonnie Lee Ogletree will be held on Sunday, June 10, at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with pastor the Rev. John Farmer and Rev. J. L. Hendrick officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Friends will serve as flower ladies and sons and grandsons as pallbearers.

Mr. Ogletree was born to the late Mrs. Annie Zackery and Mr. Frank Ogletree Jan. 5, 1936 in Triton, Ga., the oldest of three sons. In the early years he attended the school of Smith Chapel, and later attended Warner High School. At an early age he joined Shady Grove Baptist Church in Sargent, Ga. He attended college in Germany, majoring in psychology. He enlisted in the Army in 1952. Positions held during his 23 years of dedicated service ranged from: Medical Specialist, Medical Assistant, Asst. Ch. Social Worker Specialist and Caseworker. Awards included the Bronze Star, W/V Device, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service, Air Medal/2 Oak Leaves, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal/2 Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Reserves Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon/5 Presidential Unit Citations, Valorous Unit Award. Badges included the Aircraft Crewman Badge, Airborne Ranger Badge, Combat Medical Badge and CIB Badge.
After 23 years he retired from the Armed Forces. He attended Training School US Post Office, Atlanta Area Technical School Marketing, Accounting School for Auditing, and Club Management. His second career was at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, his position was Store Manager for the pharmacy.
He was a member of the Retired Enlisted Veterans Association, Member of the Reformed Universal Brotherhood and OES (Eligah Lodge #35), Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Posts 291 and 911 (Past Post Commander), and Tuskegee Airmen Association.
He married Lillian Bonner June 10, 1957 and they had three children.

Mr. Puttman Eugene Arnold of Westgate Parkway, Newnan, husband of Mrs. Cleesta Arnold, died Monday, June 4, 2001 at his home.
A funeral will be Friday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. J. C. Neal officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. L. Hendricks, the Rev. J. T. Coleman and the Rev. Mr. Puttman Eugene Arnold, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Puttman Arnold, was born October 8, 1926 in Newnan. He was surrounded by a loving family, and was the fourth of seven children. His early education was at Wesley Chapel Church School. He joined the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age. He married Cleesta McClendon August 28, 1946. He was employed at R. D. Cole manufacturing company in Newnan for many years. Later he worked at Playtex where he remained until he retired. He was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Men and was church treasurer.
Surviving are his wife, Cleesta Arnold; six children; Willie Frank Arnold, Ms. Charlie Arnold Perkins, Marion Arnold, Renee Arnold Atkinson, Annie Arnold, Vickie Arnold; ten grandchildren, Kesha, Willie, Makia and Kellie Arnold, Charles Chambers, Marecia Chambers West and Dana Perkins, Omar and Kevin Atkinson, Maryam Boseman; one great grandchild, Kiya Graham; three sisters-in-law, Jennie C. Mr. Freeman was born July 29, 1926 in Troup County, Ga. to Henry Madison Freeman and Nellie Boatner. He worked with Atlanta Baking Company as sales manager. He served in the Navy in World War II and was a member of First Baptist Church of Gay, Ga. where he was a deacon. He was a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #28 F.&A.M.

Mr. McCain was born April 5, 1924 in Cobb County, Ga. to Chester Delone McCain and Myrtice Velma Swann McCain. He was a retired mechanical engineer, having worked at the former Playtex plant; and with his wife co-founded Country Day Child Development Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Poseyville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald McCain as well as his parents.
