Mrs. Virginia Burton
Mrs. Virginia Burton, 92, entered into rest Friday, June 20, 2003 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, June 25), at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. G. Al Wright officiating. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the commital service at the cemetery. Mrs. Burton will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Burton was a native of Burke County and spent over 45 years in this area before moving to Atlanta five years ago. She was a homemaker and worked in administration at the McDuffie County Hospital for over 15 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ball Club of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Burton is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Clarence C. Burton (1962).
Survivors include three sons, Nat Burton of Norcross, Bob Burton of Big Canoe and Bill Burton of Millbrook, Ala.; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Nat Burton, Bob Burton, Bill Burton, Brad Burton, Jim Martin and Jerry Benton.

Mr. Christopher Hickman
Mr. Christopher Scott Hickman, 33, loving husband of Donna H. Hickman and father of Amanda Hickman and Kasey Hickman, entered into rest Monday, June 23, 2003 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Burke County.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 26, at 3 p.m. at the Waynesboro Church of God, with the Revs. Joey Grizzle and Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Hickman was a native of Jenkins County and had spent all of his adult life in Burke County. He attended the Waynesboro Church of God. Mr. Hickman worked with the City of Waynesboro as the Assistant Water Superintendent for the last 13 years. He is preceded in death by a son, Christopher Scott Hickman Jr. (1993). Survivors include his wife, Donna H. Hickman of Waynes-boro; a daughter, Amanda Hick-man of Waynesboro; a son, Kasey Hickman of Waynesboro; father, Herman Hickman and stepmother Barbara Hickman, both of Screven County; mo-ther, Ann Bradham and stepfather Herbert Bradham, both of Waynesboro; a brother, Craig Hickman of Waynesboro; and his grandmother, Thelma Parker of Statesboro. Pallbearers were Ashley Milton, Jessie Holmes, Josh Blackstone Jr., Bobby Braswell, Lindsey Parrish, Billy Milton and Troy Ramsey.
Mr. Johnny M. Overton
Mr. Johnny Mack Overton, 62, entered into rest Saturday, June 28, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were held Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at the Hephzibah Chapel of DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment followed at the Harlem City Cemetery. Mr. Overton was a native of Richmond County and had resided in Burke County for the last 15 years. He was a retired painter and a Baptist by faith. Survivors include his wife, Ida Huddleston Overton of Keysville; a daughter, Wanda Faye Overton of Hephzibah; four sons, Roy Overton of Augusta, John Overton of Keysville, Donald Overton of Martinez and Joseph Overton of Dearing; two sisters, Loretta Turner of Dearing and Zenna Mae Olive of Keysville; three brothers, Frank X. Overton of Harlem, Clarence Overton of Shell Bluff and Bo Overton of Appling; and 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers were Roy Overton, John Overton, Donald Overton, Joseph Overton, Ronnie Wheeler and Troy Huddleston.
Mrs. Esther W. Thompson
Mrs. Esther Williams Thompson, formerly of Vidette, entered into rest Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Augusta. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette, with Dr. Tip Carroll officiating. Mrs. Thompson was born in Florida, the daughter of Thomas and Mamie Walden Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Thompson Sr. and her son, Leonard Thompson Jr. She had retired as a medical lab technician, working in the New England states. Mrs. Thompson was a veteran of the Women’s Army Corp, U.S. Army, serving in World War II from 1944 to 1946. She was a Methodist and a member of Vidette United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Pamela Thompson of Alpharetta; two grandchildren, Kimberly Thompson Miklis and Kevin Thompson; two nieces locally, Hilda W. Musgrove and Ester W. Mr. Arthur G. Jackson entered into rest Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital, Augusta. Memorial services were held in the chapel of Hatcher Funeral Home on Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Joey Grizzle of the Waynesboro Church of God officiating. Mr. Jackson was a native of Shawnee, Okla., having made Waynesboro his home since 1984. He was an electrician and a member of the I.B.E.W. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict having fought with the 45th Infantry Division “Thunderbirds.” Mr. Jackson was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, 157272, being a descendant of William McMurray. His family said he loved people and nature. Survivors include his wife, Louise Jackson of Waynesboro; two sons, William “Bill” Leonard Jackson and Mark Thomas Jackson; four daughters, Gayle Louise Chaney, Teresa Kathleen Voss, Alice Marie Jolly and Mitzi Dawn Smith; a brother, Van Joseph Jackson; a sister, Lule Mae Robbins; and 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Geneva Bond. Mrs. Charlene D. Griffin
Mrs. Charlene DeLaigle Griffin, 70, of Pensacola, Fla., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003.
Graveside services were held Thursday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at Eastern Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Griffin was born March 20, 1933 to Louie DeLaigle and Nancy Quick DeLaigle in Toombs County, Ga. and was of the Methodist faith. She retired from Sacred Heart Hospital after many years of service. Survivors include her husband, George “G.H.” Griffin; three sons, Camp Wynn and wife Teresa, Billy Wynn and Eddie Wynn; two daughters, Elaine Tardie and husband Bob, and Terry West; stepson, George H. Griffin Jr.; stepdaughter, Laura Griffin; brother, Clayton DeLaigle and wife Betty; and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Barther L. Kelly Sr., 56, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2003.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, at Roy Mizell and Kurtz Funeral Home Chapel in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetary in Ft. Lauderdale.
Mr. Kelly was born in Jefferson County on Feb. 18, 1947 to the parents of Leroy Kelly and Alazade Flournoy (Jake) Kelly. He attended Jefferson County public schools. At an early age he confessed to know Christ and connected with Eden Baptist Church family

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Williams Bragg, 57, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, at 11 a.m. at West Millen Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter Hall officiating. Burial followed at Millen Cemetery.
Mrs. Bragg was born in Jenkins County and a member of Long Branch Church of God.
Survivors include her two daughters, Penny Tanner of Millen and Suzanne Bragg of Thomson; a son, Jerry Bragg of Statesboro; a sister, Carolyn Rowe of Darien; five brothers, Robert Williams, Johnny Williams and W.C. William, all of Millen, J.C. Williams of Estill, S.C. and Jimmy Williams of Waynesboro; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Annie S. Price
Mrs. Annie Susie Price, 80, of Mike Padgett Highway, McBean, entered into rest Friday, July 25, 2003 at Burke Medical Center.Graveside services were held Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Marion Jay officiating. Mrs. Price is a lifelong resident of Richmond County. She was Baptist by faith and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. She worked for over 25 years as a school bus driver for the Richmond County Board of Education. She is preceded in death by her husband, Merritt Carl Price Sr. Survivors include a son, Merritt Carl Price Jr. of Hephzibah; a daughter, Martha Price Knight of Waynesboro; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Jeff DeLaney, Craig Foster, David Prescott, Gordon Prescott, Edward Prescott and Jacques DeLaney.

Mrs. Annie McNorrill Smith, 88, of Waynesboro entered into rest on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at West Lake Manor, Augusta. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, at 4 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Smith was a native of Burke County and a lifelong resident until moving to North Augusta, S.C., a few years ago. She was Methodist by faith and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Girard. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Smith Sr. and two sons, Kenneth Smith and Richard Smith Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Smith Howard of North Augusta; eight grandchildren, Vickie Smith Saxon of Perkins, Joy Smith Conner of Sardis, Patty Smith Scott of Waynesboro, Al Smith of Sardis, Ken Stapleton and Kim Stapleton, both of Atlanta, Katrea Howard of Trenton, S.C. and Brian Howard of Carlsbad, Calif.; and eight great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. James A. Clements, 62, entered into rest Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Brentwood Nursing and Rehab Center. Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro. Mr. Clements was a Christian by faith and worked in the trucking industry. Survivors include his spouse, Louise S. Clements of Waynesboro; and a sister, Inona Wilkes of Jacksonville, Ga. Memorials may be made to the Botsford Baptist Church Building Fund.
